Executive Order Concerning Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility

Guantanamo Bay, houses one of US Naval bases in Cuba and Guantanamo Bay

Detention camp is located within the base. The camp is often referred to as Guantanamo or

Gitmo and was bein operated by the !oint Tas" #orce which responsible for detainin and

interroatin enemy combatants in a bid to supply military intellience for the US forces in

its war aainst terrorism. The camp held detainees that have been classified as $enemy

combatants% who were initially deemed as not bein entitled for any of the protection of the

Geneva Convention. &owever subse'uent rulin by the US Supreme Court held that these

detainees were entitles to the protections listed under Common (rticle of Geneva

Convention. The facility is "nown to have used inhumane interroation tactics includin

 physical and mental torture includin se)ual abuse, sleep deprivation, etc, and some of the

detainees have been "nown to have committed suicide. The facility*s inhumane treatment of

the detainees have raised international petitions for closure and the US overnment has been

critici+ed for sanctionin such inhumane treatment of detainees even thouh Bush

administration remained steadfast aainst these outcries by ustifyin it as action aainst

terrorism.

-n one of his three recent e)ecutive orders issued on the /st of !an 001, 2resident

Barac" 3bama ordered the review and disposition of the detainees at the Guantanamo Bay

camp and prompt closure of this detention facility within the year. (s per this e)ecutive order

any individuals who remain in detention at Guant4namo by the time of closure of the facility,

they will have to be $returned to their home country, released, transferred to a third country,

or transferred to another United States detention facility in a manner consistent with law and

the national security and forein policy interests of the United States%. The e)ecutive order

also prompts the udiciary to e)pedite the process for those detainees that needs to be

 prosecuted under current chares.

- am in total areement with Barac" 3bama*s decision to close down the facility as it

is a couraeous step towards reestablishin the upholdin of human rihts by (merica. -n its

 bid to fiht aainst terrorism, US overnment can not and should not stoop the same level of

the terrorists by inflictin inhumane torture on detainees. Some of them have not even been

 proven to be enemy combatants but arrested on suspicion only. -f an innocent man is

subected to this inhumane treatment over many years, it is a complete violation of human

rihts. 5ost of the detainees in Gitmore have been detained over four years. The decision to

suspend these activities and deport these individuals to their home countries will earn US( a

semblance of lost credibility in terms of the country*s maor focus in upholdin humanity.
