27 th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) 3 rd October 2021 Readings: Genesis 2:18-24 Hebrews 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-16 St Peter’s Youth at Ignite Conference Last week, a delegation of young adults from the St Peter’s Youth Group attended Ignite Conference, one of Australia’s most powerful Catholic youth conferences. It draws together a network of high schoolers, young adults, ministry leaders, families, teachers, priests, nuns and religious from around the country, sending them out with a passion for mission and authentic faith in Jesus. This year, here are our experiences: Joara: “Amazing. There was a lot of great fellowship and you got to connect with your inner self and God with a lot of clarity. Rob Falzon’s keynote speech “How shall I be free?” was about connecting with God in your life in the long run, not as just a one hit wonder. You can experience numerous conversions in your life.” Ryan: “More informative than expected, especially about how to be more Godly and get to know other young Catholics. However, the music wasn’t what I expected, and the Emmanuel Worship band was more energetic than I prefer. “Work, Wilderness and Worship” Men’s talk about masculinity and Christianity was my favourite workshop.” Carlo: “It was good and really brilliant! I had fun at the night rally (especially trying flips!). “The Unplugged” with Emmanuel Worship was amazing.” Taisy: “Uplifting. It was an amazing experience and I learnt a lot, f elt very encouraged and had so much fun. Met so many lovely people and there many moments of feeling really close to God and I cried my weight in tears (and sweat. The dancing got really intense!). All the keynotes and workshops I chose were relevant - there were a lot of ‘Aha’ moments. Especially, during “sisterhood”, the women only workshop where we learnt about courageous women in the bible and where we distilled the lessons God was teaching us in our lives. An important lesson I took home with me was, There is strength in suffering and purpose in pain.’” Jada: “I went into it pretty numb and in autopilot. Ignite, especially as a teenager recuperates you and reminds you that there is something bigger out there. “Dignity and Consent” touched on a lot of hard to talk about topics openly and honesty. How to align them with your life and faith. The morning rallies were loud and intense, especially when you’re not a morning person (like ‘moi’) but I still had heaps of fun.Megan: “I enjoyed the talks with Archbishop Mark (amazing speaker!). I got the most out of a session called “building personal prayer into busy lives”, which emphasizes making prayer and speaking to God a priority on par with visiting family, medical appointments, etc. The biggest thing that happened to me at the conference was during prayer teams when I encountered the Holy Spirit when praying for focus and clarity during personal prayer. It was wonderful.” Shayna: “Good! I enjoyed the rallies and the music and atmosphere. The Dance workshop was very fun.” Gerard: “I liked prayer teams and being able to lean into prayer, surrender and not rely on your own strength. One of my favourite parts was the couch sessions, where people spoke about overcoming adversity which gives us hope that we can too. It was very inspiring in the different ways they found God. Later, the Sisters of Mary Morning Star talked about Art and Work and how it is our human nature to make things and how we like beauty because it reflects God.” Olivia: “I loved it! I’ve been to Ignite 7 times and I keep going because it revives me and reminds me how blessed we are to be a part of something values community and encounter. This year I was a volunteer and got to journey with the grade 7 & 8s and it was incredible watching them embrace faith.” (cont)

St Peter’s Youth at Ignite Conference

Last week, a delegation of young adults from the St Peter’s Youth Group attended Ignite Conference, one of Australia’s most powerful Catholic youth conferences. It draws together a network of high schoolers, young adults, ministry leaders, families, teachers, priests, nuns and religious from around the country, sending them out with a passion for mission and authentic faith in Jesus. This year, here are our experiences:

Joara: “Amazing. There was a lot of great fellowship and you got to connect with your inner self and God with a lot of clarity. Rob Falzon’s keynote speech “How shall I be free?” was about connecting with God in your life in the long run, not as just a one hit wonder. You can experience numerous conversions in your life.”

Faith Matters: St Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

Matthew’s gospel 19: 16-22 tells of a rich young man going away disappointed when Jesus suggests, “Go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Francesco Bernadone could well have been like the young man in Matthew’s gospel. However, he left behind the privileged life of a merchant and soldier to live in response to the ‘cry of the poor’. His peace prayer reveals the struggles and humility of his life. Stripped of all except the healing, hopefulness, forgiveness, consolation and joy in God’s created world, St Francis lived the life of Christ.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
