50th ANNIVERSARY CARNIVAL EDITION
This year, Europe’s largest street festival, Notting Hill Carnival, will be attracting
more than 1.5 million visitors to celebrate 50
years of Caribbean heritage and culture.
A truly magnificent and special 3 day event which will bring together diverse communities from across
the UK to showcase, explore and develop a range of
creative skills and talents.
The 2016 Notting Hill Carnival is brought to you by the London Notting Hill Carnival Enterprises Trust,
(LNHCET).
The London Notting Hill Carnival offers a
diverse range of branding opportunities for
organisations to promote their values, products and services to various groups,
cultures and ages.
Effectively, this milestone offers you the opportunity to put your brand in the hearts and minds of over 1.5 million people, which no other event/platform in
London can offer.
The London Notting Hill Carnival comprises of the
following main events held on the August Bank Holiday weekend from
Saturday 29th to Monday 31st 2016. As well as various
celebratory events held throughout the year.

Notting Hill Carnival is located in the Royal
Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, spanning over eight tube stations around
the Notting Hill area.

HISTORY& BACKGROUND
The roots of Notting Hill Carnival can be traced back to similar annual events/festivals held across the Caribbean. Many of its customs and origins come from the annual
carnival held in Trinidad.
The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual outdoor event held in London every August Bank Holiday weekend since 1966. It is the largest of its kind in Europe, with its capacity, reputation and the unique vibe separating it from every other outdoor event held.
Notting Hill takes place in an area within West London and is a part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Key attractions of The Notting Hill Carnival include; music, costumes, food, free spirit community environment, culture and tradition (see Appendix 2 for breakdown of
what this entails).
There are over 50,000 performers at The Notting Hill Carnival.

WHAT IS A SOUND SYSTEM?The 38 different Sound Systems placed around the Carnival footprint provide the diverse range of music. With regular attendees holding strong allegiances for their favourite Sound Systems. These are the heart and soul of the modern day Carnival
and provide an immersive way to get your brand seen and heard.

MASQUERADEPARADE
WHAT IS THE MASQUERADE PARADE?The Masquerade Parade offers your brand visibility among one of the most standout
and visually captivating elements of The Notting Hill Carnival.
Part of the main Parade using music and dance performances to capture the attention of Carnival-goers, as they cover key locations on the footprint. The colourful and
engaging nature of the Masquerade Parade draws in crowds of both those attending the event and the number of people that watch the Carnival on TV and online.

STEEL BANDFLOATSWHAT ARE STEEL BAND FLOATS?
Steel Pans are a musical instrument originating from Trinidad and Tobago. These bands follow the procession of Carnival bringing the musical energy and buzzing
atmosphere to the streets of Notting Hill.
The Steel Bands kick things off with Panorama on the Saturday evening. This is then followed by the fun and colourful J’Ouvert and Children’s Parade on the Sunday, culminating on Monday with the Street Festival Grand Finale. These parades are
viewed by over a million revellers who line the route.
WHAT ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES?• Branding of the Floats such as the main banner

WORLD MUSIC STAGE
WHAT IS THE WORLD MUSIC STAGE?The World Music stage is a powerhouse of live music and other performances that
take place in a family friendly environment by Powis Square. Offering the chance to create a visually striking brand presence across the entire stage, combined with a bar site for consumer engagement (providing monetary gains) and direct access to one of
the outdoor viewing screens.
Throughout the 2 days there is a fabulous display of vocals, featuring performances from national and International Calypso and Soca artists, including the Association of
British Calypsonians, emerging artists of other genres and other performances.

JUDGINGZONEWHAT IS THE JUDGING ZONE?
The Judging Zone is where each band and performing unit must pass through during the Carnival Procession. Lined with tens of thousands of attendees across the 2 days of Carnival, they offer exposure to both general Carnival-goers and a
host of VIP guests.

Hill Carnival each year, we have partnered with security firm McKenzie Arnold, who deploy over 900 stewards throughout the Carnival footprint.

BRANDED LAMP POSTS
Create a striking brand presence throughout Notting Hill Carnival that will be seen by over a million people. As one of the key locations and entry points to Carnival, the
branding of 120 lamp posts in Ladbroke Grove captures the attention of both local residents and Carnival-goers.

BROADCAST SCREENS
There are four large LED screens, which broadcast all aspects of Carnival as it unfolds, while simultaneously providing public information, brand publicity and highlights of
key moments.
Additionally there are sweeping high shots to provide a complete overview of the event, with a team of presenters providing a live, on site flavour to the worldwide
viewers of the excitement and party atmosphere.

LIVE DISPLAYS
The costumes worn by the dancers at Carnival are an important element of the event, as they provide a large amount of cultural context and are central to its roots and
traditions. A parade of floats follows a designated route around the carnival footprint where the dancers, bands and other performers will wear these traditional carnival
outfits leading them around Notting Hill.

COMMUNITYENVIRONMENT& ATMOSPHERE
The Notting Hill Carnival creates a unique cultural atmosphere that over the years has adopted traditions from the various different groups that take part in the event. This atmosphere is a big pulling factor for many attendees as well as the relaxed
‘free spirit’ nature that it is associated with.

FOOD & DRINKThroughout the carnival footprint are numerous food and drink vendors. They
are each allocated a space by the borough, with some being placed within Sound System areas and other in different locations throughout the footprint.
These vendors typically sell Caribbean dishes and are typically the primary source for people to buy food.
