New rrxx300 sets a new direction in the luxury SUV market

• The new generation of the world’s best selling luxury SUV,Lexus rx300, makes its debut in Geneva.

• Lexus takes leadership by introducing hybrid technology tothe luxury car market. The new Lexus rx will change the luxury

SUV scene within two years. The vehicle is currently shown atGeneva Motor Show as the SU-HV concept car.

• In line with the manufacturer’s successful record of customersatisfaction awards in the U.S., J.D. Power Germany and U.K.surveys confirm Lexus as the best ownership experience amongall luxury car brands.

The continuing development of the Lexus family into its secondgeneration in Europe is marked at Geneva by the unveiling of the all-new Lexus rx300 luxury sport-utility vehicle. The new generation rx300 has made a quantum leap in driving dynamics, safety and refinement to move it even further ahead of othervehicles in the luxury sport utility segment.

“At first sight, it is obvious that the new rx300 changes everything. This car is another example of the innovation which makes Lexusone of the most exciting brands in Europe” says Stuart McCullough,Director of Lexus Europe “The entire Lexus range is beingcontinually refined, with typical Lexus attention to fine details. As with the development of the original is, with the is300 andSportCross derivatives, the gs and ls saloons, and the furtherrefinement of our sc430, each new generation adds anotherdimension to the Lexus brand.”

The new rx300 is distinguished from its predecessor by a newlook, with a radical combination of advanced SUV styling and a sporting and dynamic image. This unique shape is set toestablish a new trend in SUV design. The new rx300, which willbe on sale in May, is specifically designed to meet Europeanneeds by retaining a three-litre engine displacement for thetransversely-mounted high-performance V6 engine.

The rx300 provides a host of high technology, safety and comfortfeatures. The new air suspension achieves a quantum leap indriving dynamics. As a world-first in the SUV segment, theIntelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) helps illuminate acurve or a turn as the driver steers into it. The available LexusParking Assist Monitor anounces visibility when reversing, as the high-performance Mark Levinson® audio system upholds theLexus tradition of delivering premium quality sound.

After creating the luxury SUV segment with the original rx300,Lexus will once again radically change this segment with its all-new Lexus rx equipped with an advanced hybrid powertain. While the strengths of current hybrid vehicles include lowemissions and high fuel economy, this new hybrid technologyadds the benefit of outstanding performance. The car will beavailable on the market within two years.

After setting the standards in customer satisfaction for morethan a decade in the American market, recent J.D. Power surveysconducted in Germany and UK prove that Lexus is also strivingfor a unique ownership experience in Europe throughunparalleled levels of quality.

J.D. Power customer satisfaction study in UK proclaims Lexus asthe top brand for the second year running. After questioning carowner’s about their vehicles’ quality/reliability, appeal, cost ofownership and service satisfaction, Lexus scored 860 points, a staggering advantage to other luxury car brands.

For the first time, J.D. Power & Associates conducted a similarsurvey in Germany in 2002. However, the final results were consistent with other markets’. A Lexus vehicle, is200, onceagain appears at the top of the ranking as the most praised automobile by German drivers.

“We’re very proud that the recent J. D. Power surveys show that Lexus owners on both sides of the Atlantic are stronglyenthusiastic, both with their new cars and at the stage when

many customers traditionally consider replacing their vehicles”says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus Europe.

“This perception of long-term dependability translates into bothhigher resale values and repeat sales. In an increasingly competitive market, Lexus sales in 2002 remained strong at21,000 units, close to our 2001 record of 22,199.”

“This strong base of loyal customers and our new models giveus a stable basis for further growth. In terms of volume andacceptance, many more people are now aware of Lexus. Now, in addition to our traditional values of world-leading refinement, performance and quality, we have a range of dynamic vehicleswhich also bring passion and innovation to the Lexus brand. This will create even more satisfied Lexus customers.”

The extensive list of J.D. Power awards won by Lexus since itsinception is available on the next page.

The Geneva Motor Show marks the European première of the newLexus rx300. The new generation improves on every aspect of theoutgoing model, of which more than half a million units were sold. The new rx300 has additionally made a quantum leap in safety, driving dynamics and refinement to move it even further ahead ofother vehicles in the luxury sport utility segment.

In contrast to the rx330, unveiled for the North American marketat the 2003 Detroit Auto Show, the new rx300 meets the differentrequirements for Europe by retaining a 3-litre engine capacity, with attendant benefits in fuel efficiency and emissions. The powerof the transversely-mounted high-performance V6 engine of theoriginal model is increased to 150kW (204 DIN hp) by refinementof the intake and exhaust systems.

To complement the new engine refinements, modifications werealso introduced to the transmission: a new five-speed automatictransmission with a sequential gearchange and a new driveline inwhich the torque distribution between the front and rear wheels is controlled electronically by the Traction Control (TRC). A moreaerodynamic body and higher-performance tyres increases the topspeed from 180 to 200km/h, while improving combined fuelconsumption from 13.0l/100km for the original rx, to 12.2l/100km,a best in class figure for luxury SUVs equipped with 6-cylinderpetrol engines. In addition, this powerplant already complies withthe 2005 EURO IV emission standards.

Mr. Yukihiro Okane, Chief engineer of the next generation rx300says: “We concentrated on making the new Lexus rx300 a vehiclewhich has excellent dynamic performance, especially in handlingand ride comfort, NVH and braking. We determined at the outsetthat the new rx300 must have advanced styling, an unsurpassedlevel of safety equipment and a host of innovative features.”

Styled for a ‘dynamic & high performance image’

The new Lexus rx300 is set to change all preconceptions of how aSUV should look. It is distinguished from its predecessor by boldnew looks, which combine the most advanced elements of SUVstyling with a sporting and dynamic image. The rx300 sharesstyling cues with other Lexus models such as the is SportCross, in particular in its distinctive ‘c-post’ rear pillar design. The frontgrille and headlights reinforce this family feel and prolong theidentity of the current model.

The combination of intelligent packaging with a modern and distinctive shape gives a passenger compartment that is bigger and roomier than most of its segment rivals. At 4740mm in length, the new Lexus rx300 is 160mm longer than its predecessor and35mm wider, with refined packaging giving an extra 100mm ofwheelbase for additional luggage room length. Despite the greaterlength, the turning circle remains at a compact 5.7m.

The familiar Lexus grille is combined with further Lexus stylingcues, including modern, clear glass lamps front and rear, strongwheel arches and a rising window line. Large 18-inch five-spokealloy wheels give the car visual weight while the raked A-pillar andforward slant to the C-pillar create a sense of urgency, matching

the rx300’s dynamic performance. The front end of the new generation rx300 is marked with a powerful bulging bonnet linedipping in a wing-shape around the grille to the combined frontbumper and aerodynamic fairing.

The rear end styling is enhanced by a distinctive hexagonal rearwindow shape, combined with an integral rear spoiler and rearlamps which use the latest LED (light emitting diode) technologyrather than traditional filament bulbs. These are both more energyefficient - adding 1 percent to fuel economy – and a significantactive safety item. The LED elements light up ten times faster thana conventional lamp, 2 to 15 milliseconds as opposed to 150 to 200ms. This equates to 6 metres of reaction time at 100km/h.

Original, attractive interior design

“The new interior design must have originality and attractions suitable for the new breed of SUV buyer” says Mr. Okane. “The interior concept reflects the dynamic style of the exterior.”

As well as the customary standards of Lexus comfort, ambience, practicality and luxury, the rx300 combines the latest contemporarydesign with the highest quality materials. The interior design issporty but spacious, solid but luxurious, in a light and roomy cabintrimmed with a choice of three colours which match the ivory, black or light grey leather seats.

The main instrument cluster in front of the driver is housed in adistinctive three pod design with a central speedometer, flanked by tachometer and a multi-function display showing fuel contents, engine temperature and gear selection.

The dashboard features a distinctive brushed ‘cool metal’ surroundon each side of the centre console, containing the climate andaudio controls and a 7-inch screen for vehicles equipped withsatellite navigation system and reverse guidance display. For those who wish to specify, an 11-speaker premium audio systemis offered based on Lexus’ unique collaboration with the world’smost exclusive maker of home audio systems, Mark Levinson®.

Page 6: 3 New rx300 sets a new direction in the luxury SUV market€¦ · The new Lexus rx will change the luxury SUV scene within two years. The vehicle is currently shown at Geneva Motor

Lexus 1312

On selected equipment packages, a premium illumination schemecovers door handles, centre console, footwell and scuff plates, conveying a sophistication flavour to the interior.

The central ‘cool metal’ trim is complemented by curved lightwood in the lower console containing the selector lever for thesequential automatic transmission, and as highlights on the steering wheel, door trims and on the centre console box betweenthe front seats. The adjustable console box can either slide forwardto give a feeling of continuity with the centre console, or backwardsto allow a ‘walkthrough’ between the front seats.

A new approach to convenience

The rear seats match those in the front, being designed as separateentities with a padded central area, to highlight an ‘independentfour seat’ approach (on selected models). Each rear seat isadjustable fore and aft by 120mm and can be reclined, to allow all passengers to travel luxury class, whatever the road conditions. The padded central area additionally folds down to create a combined armrest and storage box, with two ‘XL’ size cupholderscomplementing the three for front-seat passengers. The centrearmrest also accesses a ‘ski hatch’ allowing longer objects to becarried between the rear seats, while both rear seats fold forwardto add practicality to rx300’s style.

In order to set a difference to other luxury SUVs, the rear tailgate ispower operated, automatically opening and closing at the touch ofa button. It can also be activated at distance by the vehicle’s key.To ensure a safe operation, the system features a warning buzzerand touch sensors stop the door when there is any obstruction toits closing movement.

To further aid convenience, the tonneau-type luggage bay cover isautomatically retracted as the tailgate opens. Hidden underfloorstorage compartments are also accessible in the luggage bay, bysimply clicking down on their pop-up lids.

Revolutionising safety in the SUV segment

The new Lexus rx300 will also have a positive impact to thesafety level of the SUVs to come by setting an integral approachthrough a vast range of innovative technologies in both activeand passive safety. Uppermost are the excellent driving dynamics, aided still further by Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control andBrake Assist technology, but additionally the new rx300 carriesmore safety equipment than any other vehicle in its segment.

Intelligent AFS, Adaptive Front-lighting System is one of theseveral safety features available in the new Lexus rx and radicallyimproves night-driving visibility when cornering. For the first timein an SUV, Intelligent AFS uses an electronic controller to calculatefrom the vehicle speed and steering angle, the optimum swivel of the lighting area for better visibility while cornering. Unlikeearlier systems which were merely linked to a car’s steering, the Intelligent AFS controller controls the lighting directionindependently and is combined with Xenon headlights with anautomatic leveling system for optimum night-time vision. Vehiclesequipped with Xenon headlights also feature headlamp cleaners.

An automatic rain sensing windscreen wiper system and a timedspray windscreen wash system ensure the best possible visibility in poor weather. This is further aided by the use of water-repellentglass, which is specially coated to maintain clear vision throughthe front side windows.

A further aid to active safety is the use of a Lexus Parking AssistMonitor, effectively a TV camera mounted in the rear, a uniquefeature among luxury SUVs. When reverse gear is selected, animage appears on the navigation display screen on the rx300dashboard, allow accurate manoeuvring and minimising the risk of collision with low-level objects.

The original rx300 remains one of the best-performing sport-utilityvehicles in terms of passive safety performance, as confirmed bycrash-tests conducted by independent organisations in the UnitedStates, like IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).

Lexus 1514

Lexus engineers have ensured that the new model protects itsoccupants even more thoroughly. Standard equipment includesmulti-stage driver and front passenger SRS airbags. Inflationpressure will vary according to information gathered from the seatposition sensor, crash severity sensor and seatbelt buckle switch.Standard side curtain shield airbags offer supplemental head protection for occupants in side impacts.

The side protection is further enhanced by the large-sized Thorax-Abdomen-Pelvis side airbags. This airbag features a capacity of 13litres, compared with 10 litres for the conventional side airbags. For this reason, it can reduce the risk of chest and abdomeninjuries by spreading the forces over a wider area.

Injuries to the legs, common in major frontal impacts are likely tobe significantly reduced by the rx300’s provision of a SRS kneeairbag for the driver, for the first time in the segment. The purposeof SRS knee airbag adoption is to reduce injury from contact withsteering column and lower dashboard structures, but they havealso been found to reduce head and chest injuries by reducing thepelvis displacement and rotation of the torso in a major impact.

The overall structural strength of the new rx300 also plays a significant part in protecting its occupants. Over 80 cars werecrash tested, achieving optimal results in impacts far greaterthan the mandatory crash test requirements.

Dynamic performance in all conditions

The new rx300 has added engaging dynamics to the expectedLexus refinement in any circumstance. This is aided by the exceptional rigidity of the new body structure while an improvedfront McPherson Strut suspension system includes a new coilspring geometry, which gives greater lateral force control, allowingbetter control and a smoother ride. Revised suspension bushescomplement an upgraded power steering system, to create a linearvehicle movement during initial steering input, resulting inimproved cornering and steering response.

At the rear, a dual-link strut suspension system is used in combination with a new, more rigid rear axle design. Parallel tothis, coils and shock absorbers feature a new layout, engineered to achieve a flatter ride. Both front and rear suspension systemsare further complemented by ‘high reaction’ shock absorber developments to achieve high response and high damping force at small amplitudes.

In addition, a new 4-wheel air suspension offers a still higher levelof performance and refinement. This optional feature providesgreater ride control together with an auto-leveling function, plusfour additional modes to alter ride height through a range of 55mm.

The ‘Lo’ mode lowers vehicle height by 15mm for better handling, while ‘High’ mode raises vehicle height by 30mm for off-roadcapability in case of emergencies. Above 100km/h the air suspension automatically lowers the vehicle by 7.5mm to providesuperior high-speed stability. When the ignition is turned off, thenew rx300 can assume ‘Access’ mode by pressing a button, lowering vehicle height by 25mm, to aid easier access or exit by the driver and passengers.

235/55R18 high performance tyres are standard on most models, carried on stylish 18-inch diameter five-spoke alloy wheels. In addition to enhancing driver feedback and cornering performance, these larger wheels enable the increase of front brake disc size to319mm, while an increase in front brake piston size and reductionof brake pedal stroke ensures more linear and powerful brakingperformance.

This is further enhanced by the use of Brake Assist. A key featureof this particular system is that the timing and degree of brakingassistance is designed to maximise emergency stopping performance, yet ensure that the driver does not discern anythingunusual about the braking operation. It is combined with VSC(vehicle stability control), which monitors the vehicle's behaviourduring cornering and maintains vehicle stability by correcting oversteer or understeer.

Dynamism with refinement

The new rx300 uses a development of the transversely-mountedhigh-performance 3-litre V6 engine of the original model. Poweris increased from 148kW (201 DIN hp) to 150kW (204 DIN hp) byrefinement of the intake and exhaust systems. This figure is class-leading among competitors with 6-cylinder, 3-litre petrol engines.A combination of these engine refinements with a more aerodynamic body and higher-performance tyres increases thetop speed from 180 to 200km/h.

A new five-speed automatic transmission is used for the first time.In addition to offering additional driver appeal with a sequentialgearchange, motorway fuel economy is also improved as a result;from 13.0l/100km for the original rx, to 12.2l/100km for the newmodel. Thanks to this, the new Lexus rx300 also complies withEURO IV emission regulations.

The new 5-speed automatic gearbox is combined with an all-newdriveline in which the torque distribution between the front andrear wheels is controlled electronically by the Traction Control(TRC), rather than the previous mechanical control by viscous limited-slip differential. The new TRC system provides more precise control, providing smooth traction even when the throttlepedal is used roughly.

The improved engine and drivetrain set new standards in refinement, even beyond the class leading standards set by the origina rx300.One key to this is the straightening of both the exhaust system andthe driveline routes under the car, to minimise resonance andvibration. As a principle source of vibration is under hardacceleration, the front section of the driveline is actually cantedforward by 2 degrees to allow it to assume the optimum straightline under load.

This attention to detail is matched by similar refinements in structure and sound deadening to ensure that – as you’d expect of a Lexus - wind and road noise levels are the lowest in the class, establishing a change to the typical levels of noise and vibrationattributed to SUVs.

The new generation rx300 has been developed with the use of the Maibara wind tunnel, which was also used for the development of the Shinkansen Bullet Train and is capable ofgenerating wind speeds up to 400km/h. The wind tunnel’s verylow background noise allows Lexus to concentrate on the reduction of wind noise to all-time low levels. ComputationalFluid Dynamics research was also used, with areas such as thepositioning of the parked windscreen wipers and the shaping ofthe A-pillars being refined to reduce wind noise by an average of5dB in all frequencies.

“The development team strived in improving the new rx300’s performance in the areas of high frequency noise, idling boomingnoise, vibration and wind noise. As a result, passengers can enjoya relaxed drive at cruise speeds and an absence of noise and vibration at idling stop. However, the excellent NV performance of the Lexus rx300 will not deter its driver from enjoying superiordriving pleasure.” said Chief Engineer Okane. “The new rx combinesthis with Advanced Styling, Dynamic Performance, SafetyEquipment and some outstanding features – that is how it shouldbe for the new Lexus rx300.”

Building on a heritage of success

Almost a decade after Lexus first moved into thelargest car market in the world; in 1999, Lexusfirst offered in the USA a distinct sport utilityvehicle (SUV). Typically, it redefined themarketplace.

The rx300, which offered the commanding rideheight and off-road functionality of a sport-utilityvehicle without sacrificing the comfortable ride, handling and conveniences of a luxury car, became a runaway success establishing an all-new segment in the market on both sides ofthe Atlantic. The rx300 is the best-selling luxurySUV in America, beating both established

domestic and imported brands. This created increased awarenessof the brand to a wider audience, driving sales of the full range ofmodels. Lexus became the Number One-selling luxury brand inthe United States, outpacing Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lincoln,Cadillac and all other luxury competitors.

With over half a million of the original rx300 model sold, the newmodel known as the rx330 in the USA, has already received ravereviews following its unveiling at the North American InternationalAuto Show in January 2003. The new rx300, which will go on sale inEurope from May is confidently expected to meet similar acclaim.

“The new rx300 is another example of the innovation whichmakes Lexus one of the most exciting brands in Europe” saysStuart McCullough, Director of Lexus Europe. “The original rx300has not only been one of the best selling Lexus models, it redefinedthe luxury SUV market sector. The entire Lexus range is being continually refined, with typical Lexus attention to fine detail. Eachnew generation adds another new dimension to the Lexus brand. We are sure that the dynamic new rx300 will gain many more satisfied Lexus customers.”

Hybrid version to revolutionise SUV segment

For the first time in the world of luxury cars, Lexus will include ahybrid vehicle in its model offer, which will mark a totally newapproach in this market. A special version of the Lexus rx will beequipped with a new hybrid system and will be available to ourcustomers within two years.

Featuring a ultra-efficient V6 petrol engine at the front and twoelectric motors to power front and rear wheels, the new systemwill set the difference to current hybrid systems by providingthrilling performance with an outstanding fuel efficiency.

This system will give the V6 engine the power and torque of a V8,but returning emissions levels and fuel efficiency which are muchcloser to a compact car than a conventional SUV.

The system is highly modular and different size motors andengines can be combined to favour either fuel economy or poweror both.

fuel consumption at speed and also actively utilise the airflow tocontribute both to straightline stability and during high-speed cornering.

A key to this is careful control both of underbody and underbonnetaerodynamics. Several underfloor parts are now used, carefullyshaped to allow the cleanest possible underbody airflow, assistedby tyre fairings fitted just ahead of the front and rear wheels, whichcontrol airflow around the tyres.

Further airflow enhancements include the rounding of the frontbumper bottom and engine cover lip, which result in bothsmoother airflow and reduced drag. The new grille design also features a dramatically reduced aperture to further controlunderbonnet airflow. While the grille itself remains the same size,80% of its openings are now sealed to reduce turbulence and drag.

Lexus iiss – the sportiest approach to a prestige sedan or wagon

From its introduction, the Lexus is200 successfully challenged the best compact sedans in Europe, to create a new standard inthe D-segment, one of the most competitive market places in theindustry. Over the past four years approximately 35,000 customersacross Europe have enjoyed the unique and exciting driving experience that is delivered by the is range. The model continuesto redefine both value and quality in the segment, in 2002 theis200 became the top-ranked model in the first-ever CustomerSatisfaction Index study carried out in Germany by J. D. Power and Associates.

The range was further enhanced in 2001 by the introduction of the larger capacity is300 and the revolutionary is300SportCross. Extending the engine capacity from two litres tothree for the is300, boosted power from 155 DIN hp to 213 DINhp and maximum torque from 195 to 288Nm. Matched to thelegendary is chassis, the Lexus is300 emphatically regains forenthusiastic drivers, the feeling that the driver, not theelectronics system, is in control.

0-100km/h acceleration is achieved in approximately 8seconds, compared with 9.5 for the 2-litre car, yet thecombined fuel consumption remains at a highly reasonable10.8l/100km.

Individual design with a strong personality

A careful glance at the is exterior design highlights adjectives like dynamic, solid and muscular. A prime reason for this is theshort body overhang, which also contributes to better handling by reducing the yaw moment of inertia.

The SportCross shares the same floorpan and dimensions as the is200 and is300 four-door sedans, but with an overall lengthof 4505mm and a wheelbase of 2670mm. The sharply wedged silhouette commences with a powerful bulging bonnet line dipping sharply down towards the grille, emphasising thedynamic overall shape and significantly improving air flow overthe body. The familiar Lexus grille is combined with angled headlamps with double-independent beams, low slung air-damand built-in fog lamps to add to the sports effect and createaerodynamic efficiency.

Strong wheel arches, a low body line and the modern, clear glasslamps front and rear contain further Lexus styling cues. While themain body panels are identical as far back as the rear doors, fromthe C-post back, the SportCross features a unique coupe-like outline enhanced by the use of fully-integrated rear combinationlamps which carry the characteristic Lexus circular structural motif.

Sporty handling and comfortable ride in the same package

A series of detail structural and chassis enhancements furtherimprove on the goals attained at the beginning of the Lexus isdevelopment project. The is has to provide excellent handling fordriver enjoyment, but should also display a comfortable ride, evenon the worst surfaces, without displaying the harshness which iscommon to many performance cars.

Page 13: 3 New rx300 sets a new direction in the luxury SUV market€¦ · The new Lexus rx will change the luxury SUV scene within two years. The vehicle is currently shown at Geneva Motor

Lexus 2928

The key to this is class-leading structural integrity and torsionalrigidity of the bodyshell, further enhanced in the latest is modelsby the computer-aided redesign and stiffening of critical areas of the structure such as front suspension cross-beams, rear suspension towers and body pillars. One third of the body structure is now built of high-tensile steel, further enhancing rigidity and reducing weight.

The double wishbone suspension both at front and rear isdesigned to suppress front diving during hard braking and the rearsuspension fine-tuned to optimise the vehicle’s centre of gravityduring cornering. The Lexus is uses the brake discs from the bigger Lexus gs300 to achieve a braking performance suited to themost demanding driver. The braking performance is enhancedthrough the use of a larger master cylinder diameter to furtherimprove brake pedal feel and the addition of a latest-generationABS, working together with EBD (Electronic BrakeforceDistribution) and Brake Assist.

A final touch of style on the latest is models are newly-styled 16-inch and 17-inch aluminium wheels (according to the equipmentpackage) with large-dimension tyres. A Torsen limited-slipdifferential and a Traction Control (TRC) system prevent wheelspin, making sure all the power is properly converted into performance.

Besides the advanced suspension and braking system, the Lexusis features also Vehicle Stability Control (VSC, on is300 as standardequipment). The system will help the driver regain control of thevehicle after heavy oversteer or understeer, making it safer toexplore the car’s limits.

Chassis and powertrain in perfect harmony

The driver appeal of both is200 and is300 models is ensured bytheir powertrains. Both engines feature 4-valve per cylinder and areequipped with VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent). This system provides better torque through low and mid engine speedrange and also better fuel efficiency. The engines also use ETCS-i

(Electronic Throttle Control System – intelligent) and ACIS(Acoustic Control Induction System). The first is a by-wire acceleratorwhich can provide a quicker engine response or better smoothness, according to the driver’s intentions. ACIS can vary the intake manifold length in order to improve torque on low and mid range, improving also engine smoothness.

Driver control on the Lexus is300 is further enhanced with thestandard use of a 5-speed automatic transmission with an ‘E-shift’push-button, sequential gear-change system. With the floor shiftlever engaged in the ‘M’ position, buttons mounted on the steeringwheel allow drivers to manually change gear, without moving theirhands from the steering wheel.

is200 is offered with a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission. This gearbox can extract the most out of the straight six engine, or alternatively buyers can choose the 4-speed automatic ECTgearbox. This transmission has a flex-lockup system for better fuelefficiency and two different programs: SNOW and POWER. Thefirst provides extra-smooth acceleration for a quicker progressionon slippery surfaces; the second provides a sportier feeling bymaking gear changes on the engine speed redline.

Interior form and function combined

The Lexus is interior styling reflects the distinctive style of the exterior. It is sporty but spacious and has been subtly upgradedwith the use of ‘soft-touch’ materials on the dashboard surface. The aim was to ensure the fun-to-drive feel, but driver and passengers alike will equally appreciate the seats’ comfort and the light and roomy cabin.

Figure hugging sports seats; a 3-spoke, leather steering wheel andan excellent driving position come as standard. The seats aredesigned to offer maximum driver and passenger comfort for long distance touring yet also provide plenty of support duringperformance driving.

Page 14: 3 New rx300 sets a new direction in the luxury SUV market€¦ · The new Lexus rx will change the luxury SUV scene within two years. The vehicle is currently shown at Geneva Motor

Dominating the instrument panel is theinnovative chronograph style speedometer andtachometer cluster, the graphics of which havebeen subtly altered to further enhance their styleand ease of reading. Minor gauges within thecombined cluster include an instantaneous fuelconsumption reading, engine temperature, battery indicator, fuel gauge and a gear-shiftindicator.

A full climate control air conditioning system isstandard equipment on all models. As is remotecontrol central double locking, electric powerwindows all round, with one-touch control and jam-protection for the driver’s side arestandard equipment. So are heated, electrically

folding exterior mirrors, front fog lamps, illuminated vanity mirrorsand a passenger seat belt warning. The 6-speaker audio system isfully integrated into the sweeping centre console for easy accessand includes an in-dash 6-disc CD changer.

The Lexus is SportCross interior features rear seats designed tofold in a 60/40% split to further enhance load carrying capacity. This allows up to three people to be carried while extending thelength of the available load space to 1670mm. The front passengerseat back can also be folded forward, allowing it to be used as atable when parked and extending the available load length to anastonishing 2600mm.

To allow three passengers to be safely carried in the back of theSportCross, full lap and diagonal harness are provided for all passengers, with the centre seat belt retractor built into the roof to allow for optimum convenience. When two rear seat passengersare being carried, a central armrest, similar to the Sedan, can bedeployed. Both the left and right side rear seats, like the Sedan, comply with ISOFIX child seat requirements.

“The is series is in terms of volume the most important car in our European range” says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus

Europe. “From its launch, the Lexus is200 brought passion andexcitement, and has made many more people aware of Lexus.Across Europe close to 35,000 people have bought an is modeland for the majority it was their first taste of the Lexus ownershipexperience. By its success, the is has increased the number ofsales per dealer, increasing their viability, their numbers and ourdevelopment of an even better geographical dealer coverage. Thatallows Lexus to offer better than ever, the standards of accessibilityand service that our customers require.”

Lexus 4140

The same ECT 5-speed automatic transmission is used in bothgs300 and gs430, but changes were made to suit each engine’scharacteristics. The Lexus gs300 features the advanced E-Shiftsystem, which enables the driver to change gears through buttonslocated in the steering wheel, when the gearlever is in the Mposition. To better suit the powerful 4.3-litre V8, the automatictransmission features AI-SHIFT. AI stands for Artificial Intelligenceand it can analyse road conditions and learn the driver’s drivingstyle to successfully predict the best shift strategy.

Safety and driving pleasure as a whole

Complementing the classical front-engine rear-wheel driveconfiguration, the carefully tuned double wishbone suspensionsystem features anti-dive and anti-squat geometry to ensure thebest balance of comfort and control, matched to speed-sensitive,rack and pinion power steering. Controllability is further enhancedby traction control, a multi-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS)for the car’s four-wheel ventilated disc brakes and Vehicle StabilityControl (VSC) system all aid the driving experience.

Smoothly sculpted, sporting exterior with interior innovation and elegance

A key feature of the Lexus gs range is its distinctive externalstyling. The profile is based on a simple geometric ellipse which isthen given a functional aerodynamic treatment to create what thedesigners referred to as an “aero-ellipse” shape. This profile, evolved as the result of an extensive programme of aerodynamicdevelopment, makes the Lexus gs one of the most efficientshapes of any sporting saloon. The low air resistance not onlycontributes to performance and fuel economy, it also producesgreater stability and driver control at speed.

The interior of the gs range remains a perfect blend of eleganceand practicality, with high-quality upholstery, walnut trim andinnovative design features. It is also a true Lexus, in offering oneof the most peaceful and comfortable environments on the road.Standard equipment includes cruise control, trip computer and

Lexus llss443300 -- the definition of automotive perfection

• ls430 improves on every area of legendary Lexus perfectionwith some of the most sophisticated automotive technologyavailable.

• 4.3-litre, 32-valve, V8 engine with intelligent Variable ValveTiming (VVT-i) offers increased performance and ultra lowemissions with similar fuel consumption.

• A coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.25, the lowest of any currentpassenger car.

A decade ago, the first generation Lexus established newbenchmarks for performance, quality, quiet ride and luxury content - and the model remained a world-leader. With theintroduction to Europe in 2000 of the third-generation Lexus ls,Lexus again redefined the automobile market's expectation ofluxury cars.

The ls430 combines a more dynamic exterior profile withincreased efficiency. A wheelbase lengthened 75mm, increasesinterior space, but overall length remains the same at 4995mm.The overall height was also raised to gain interior space, yet thels430 achieves a coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.25, the lowest of anycurrent passenger car.

This unprecedented aerodynamic efficiency virtually eliminateswind noise, making the ls430 even quieter inside than itsbenchmark predecessor. In addition, the ultra-low Cd helps keepfuel consumption at similar levels - even with the increased enginedisplacement and performance.

The quad-cam, 32-valve, 4.3-litre V8 in the ls430 develops 281 DINhp at 5,600 rpm and 417Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. Mated to acomputer-controlled five-speed automatic transmission, it powersthe Lexus flagship from 0-100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds. Lexusengine management systems are among the most sophisticatedavailable, controlling fuel injection and ignition timing tothousands of a second. Combined with intelligent Variable Valve

Lexus 4948

Timing (VVT-i), the 4.3-litre V8 gives remarkable efficiency, lowexhaust emissions and low fuel consumption. It also ensuresunrivalled tractability and smoothness.

The Lexus ls430 also introduced the industry's first “torque-activated” powertrain control, which governs the throttle basednot just on pedal position, but also on vehicle speed and enginerpm. A Super ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission) fivespeed, intelligent automatic gearbox which can adapt its gear shiftpattern to suit driving style and road conditions is also linked tothe computerised engine management system, to momentarilyreduce torque for even smoother gear changes.

The latest chassis developments give the driver of the ls430 thehighest levels of confidence and stability in all road conditions. Atthe same time the new Lexus ls430 achieves a serenely quiet andcomfortable ride. Improved packaging of the overall design gives awell-balanced front/rear weight distribution of 51/49% and atighter turning radius of 5.2m for easier manoeuvring, while thelower unsprung weight of aluminium alloy suspensioncomponents additionally aids ride and handling.

Electronically modulated air suspension, is available as an optionon the Lexus ls430. The system was the first in the world to utilisethe non-linear H∞ control method, to control the damping of theair suspension and realise world-leading stability and ride quality. The system is also automatically lowered at high speeds toimprove stability and aerodynamic properties. This generates areduction in the coefficient of drag (Cd) from 0.26 to 0.25, thelowest of any passenger car.

In building the new ls430, Lexus used a supercomputer to digitalisethe precise surface design of the body. The unit of measure usedis 1/1000 of a millimetre, ten times more precise than the typicalunits used then by other car companies. The result is more-precisely stamped sheet metal for better fit and assembly quality.

The large and comfortable interior space of the new Lexus ls430 isdesigned for greater space, comfort and luxury, taking maximum

advantage of the newly-developed packaging. High-quality wood-grain panelling, featuring walnut and birds-eye grain, is extensivelyused on panel trims and door cappings, with the choice ofgenuinely fine materials and the precise fit and finish emphasisingLexus craftsmanship.

The interior cabin of the Lexus ls430 is much more than one ofthe most luxurious environments on four wheels. It is also one ofthe safest. The ls430 features a rigid passenger cell protected byfront and rear crumple zone structures, further enhanced by thelatest generation Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)technology.

Extensive use is made of high-tensile steel in the body structure toreduce weight and further enhance efficiency. The body was alsocarefully designed to maximise the size of impact-absorbingcrumple zones in the front and rear as well as incorporatingsubstantial side impact protection bars in the doors.

“The Lexus ls430 stands for ‘Probably the Best Car in the World’.The one thing that probably defines it best is its technology, combined with a more dynamic driving capability and luxury” says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus Europe. “ls430 hasstandard equipment that no other competitor model can offer. It demonstrates engineering excellence in every component”.

sscc443300’s commercial success highlights Lexus design icon

• The design icon of the Lexus range, upgraded with typicalLexus attention to fine detail.

• European sales for 2002 more than double the previous year’sfigures.

• Improvements to suspension benefit driving pleasure.

• Continuously variable anti-glare rear-view mirrors typical ofLexus attention to detail.

• Wiper blades use graphite-coated rubber for smoother, quieteroperation and longer life.

The new Lexus sc430, the first-ever cabriolet model from themarque, continues to add ‘must have’ passion to the pursuit ofperfection for which Lexus is noted. Sales in 2002 more thandoubled from 717 in 2001, to over 1600 – yet nonetheless themodel is receiving a series of detail improvements as a part of the ‘relentless pursuit of perfection’ which is Lexus.

The most desireable car of the Lexus range was designed from theoutset to be the world’s finest all-round luxury cabriolet, with anintegrated all-metal retractable roof offering the ‘best of bothworlds’, combining open-air driving pleasure with Lexus standardsof comfort and refinement. sc430 also combines the highest levelsof performance and world-leading refinement and efficiency fromits 286 DIN hp, 4.3-litre V8 engine and five-speed automatictransmission.

To achieve optimum levels of refinement, performance andeconomy, aluminium components, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing –intelligent), ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System –intelligent), TAPC (Torque Activated Powertrain Control) and ACIS(Acoustic Control Induction System) were incorporated into thisengine. An exceptional torque figure of 419Nm at just 3500 rpm, results in a 0-100km/h acceleration of only 6.4 seconds.

Ensuring Involving performance in every way

Driving pleasure and performance are key attributes of a propercoupe or cabriolet and the Lexus sc430 was developed to be aconvincing car in those areas, with a purpose-built high-performance platform featuring double wishbone independentsuspension and a structure optimised to provide excellent rigiditywhether the retractable hardtop is up or down.

Refinements to seat design are also intended to enhance drivingpleasure as well as the Lexus sense of luxury and of passive safety. The front seats are comfortable, enhanced by the use of ultra-softleather. The rear seats also offer form-fitting comfort and softleather trim creating a relaxing, stylish and opulent interior.

The design of the upper seat back is set deeper, to better absorbthe upper back of the occupant, while the headrest is positioned toreduce the backward movement of the head and reduce loads tothe neck. The optimum seating position is further ensured by amicrocomputer-controlled memory function for the 8-wayadjustment of the driver’s and front passenger seats, while powerlumbar supports are fitted as standard equipment and optionalseat heaters can be fitted to maintain seat temperature at between30 and 40 degrees Celsius.

These features enhance the sc430’s stylish interior which offers amultitude of convenience features. Easy-to-read analogue gauges,an optional navigation system, a premium audio system whichcan be upgraded to a genuine Mark Levinson® unit. The MarkLevinson® audio system features a 440W low distortion poweramplifier and nine custom-designed Mark Levinson® speakers, linked to an LW/MW/FM radio system, cassette and CD playerwith 6-CD auto changer mounted in the head unit.

An optional Lexus navigation system features a DVD which iscapable of storing map information for the whole western Europeand which allows for faster access and route calculation.

Design detail, a key feature for a unique car

From day one of the design of sc430, Lexus designers fromEurope and Japan worked together to create a unique design, inspired by products such as high-performance luxury yachts, reflected in both the avant-garde exterior and the sophisticatedinterior styling of the sc430.

A common characteristic in all of these products is a painstakingattention to detail. On the move with the roof down, the sc430continues to maintain the customary standards of Lexusrefinement and comfort, thanks to the use of computer generated“wind-wrap” analysis to carefully control the airflow around thepassenger compartment. An air deflector placed between the rearseat headrests assists this and further ensures comfort duringhigh-speed, roof-down cruising.

The sc430 also features one of the world’s most advancedclimate control systems that allows occupants to enjoy moretop-down driving time, even with cold weather. When the roofis up, it constantly monitors outside temperature, cabintemperature and sunlight intensity. With this information it isable to calculate the optimum heater outlet temperature, airflowspeed and outlet mode necessary to achieve the pre-selectedcabin temperature. When the top is down, the circulation ofwarm air is directly increased in line with driving speed, keepinga comfortable temperature around the cabin area. A unique Lap-jet heater outlet is also featured. This functions only whenthe roof is lowered and prevents cold air from building up in the lap area.

A further sign of the painstaking Lexus attention to detail are therear view mirrors which respond to the amount of ambient light toprevent glare as necessary. Both inside and outside mirrors havecontinuously variable electronic anti-glare controls, as opposed toother electronic mirrors which merely adjust through a limitedrange of adjustments in fixed steps.

Page 25: 3 New rx300 sets a new direction in the luxury SUV market€¦ · The new Lexus rx will change the luxury SUV scene within two years. The vehicle is currently shown at Geneva Motor

Lexus 5958

The mirrors work from two sensors mounted on the interiormirror. In daytime, the mirrors operate on ‘day’ mode just likeconventional mirrors with 70% reflection ratios. As ambient lightlevels fall, one sensor detects ambient light and distinguishesbetween day and night. At the same time the sensors detect thedifference between ambient light and a brighter light coming fromthe rear. In response the interior mirror adjusts the reflection ratiofrom 7% to 70%, while the outer mirrors adjust their reflectionratios between 12% and 50%.

A final convenience feature of the mirrors, day or night, is thatwhenever the gearshift lever is moved into reverse, the doormirrors automatically tilt down to give a better view of the roadbehind. It is a feature typical of Lexus attention to detail.

While the mirrors ensure a clear view behind, the maintenanceof a clear view ahead in all weathers is maintained with equally

typical efficiency. To ensure the optimum performance, the rubberwiper blades are coated with graphite. This ensures smootheroperation and longer life. Wet-weather visibility is furtherenhanced by three-hole windshield washer nozzles with washerliquid volume and spray pattern refined to maximise wiperperformance.

At the front of the sc430, the unique headlamp design offers asstandard, projector-style Xenon lamps with low beams. Carefuldevelopment has allowed a 5 lux beam projection distance ontothe road surface of over 100m.

Since safety is paramount at Lexus, the new sc430 takesadvantage of several advanced technologies. The cabriolet uses abraking system featuring a four-channel ABS, Electronic BrakeforceDistribution (EBD), Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control(VSC), Brake Assist and a low Tyre Pressure Warning System(TPWS). EBD monitors all four wheels during braking and variesbrake pressure according to the load on each wheel.

Passive safety is as comprehensively addressed as on every Lexusmodel. A combination of driver’s airbag, a dual stage passenger

seat airbag that selects the opening speed in function of the levelof impact, front side airbags, front seat belt pretensioner andforce limiters ensure the highest possible standards of occupantprotection.

“We have traditionally made some of the best-built, most refinedcars in the world. The Lexus sc430 is without doubt one of thegreatest, most desirable, driving experiences too” says StuartMcCullough, Director of Lexus Europe. “The sc430 is an icon ofour brand. It therefore has to be the best and offer the finestexperience. Our recent upgrades show that we are committed asalways to the relentless pursuit of perfection.”
