ELDER HOLLAND“The wounds in his hands, feet, and

side are signs that in mortality painful things happen even to the pure and the perfect, signs that tribulation is not evidence that God does not love us.

It is a significant and hopeful fact that it is the wounded Christ who comes to our rescue. He who bears the scars of sacrifice, the lesions of love, the emblems of humility and forgiveness is the Captain of our Soul.

That evidence of pain in mortality is undoubtedly intended to give courage to others who are also hurt and wounded by life, perhaps even in the house of their friends.

“In spite of the size of the great multitude, Christ nevertheless took time for each one to have that personal experience.” (Christ And The New Covenant, p. 259)

3 Nephi 12: 2 Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words…

…and come down into the depths of humility…

… and be baptized…

I watched on television the summary trial given one who had been a merciless despot. Now in the moment of his extremity he wished for mercy on the part of his accusers. I know nothing of the court system under which he and his wife were tried. I know only that the hearing was short, the judgment death, and the execution quick and final. There had been no mercy shown through long years of oppression, harsh and unrelenting; and now in this hour of bitter culmination none was extended.

Mercy is of the very essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The degree to which each of us is able to extend it becomes an expression of the reality of our discipleship under Him who is our Lord and Master.
