Past Simple ,Past Continuous & Present
Perfect
– He left at three o’clock.
– They arrived three weeks ago.
Examples
Use • a finished action in the past
– We met in 2007.• An action that follows anotherin a
story – Mary walked into the room and stopped.
• a Past situation or habit
– When I was a child, we lived in a small house by the sea.
• Most regular verbs add –ed to the base form of the verb ( worked, wanted, helped .....)
• There are many common irregular verbs ( ex. Go-went, Meet-met, See-saw,.....)
Time expressions• Last{night, year,week , month,
summer , Sunday etc.• Ago{ a year ago, a week ago,a month
ago etc.• Yesterday• In a past year ex. In 2003 , in 1878
Form• Affirmative Sentence:• Subject + verbin simple past +
complement.• Examples :v Katty went to Viña last summer.vMy parents used to go to the disco.v My Friends were at home today.
Negative statementsSubject +did+not +verb (base form)+ complement
Ex. I didn´t go to school today.• My Friends didn´t study yesterday• Sandra wasn´t at home last week .She was on
vacations.

Wh-How questions
Wh + did + subject + verb(base form)+ Complement?

Past continuous
Affirmative Sentences• Subject +was / were + verb + -ing+
complement.• Examples:• They were driving to Paris.• We were waiting for a long time.
Negative Sentences• Subject+ wasn´t/weren´t + -ing.• Examples :• I wasn´t playing .I was doing my
homework.• My friends weren´t reading.They
were watching TV.
QUESTIONSWas/Were + subject + verb-ing ?Examples:• Was your sister listening to music in

Wh- How questions• Wh-+ was/were+ subject+verb-ing ?• How • Example:• What were you doing last night at

Use • To express activities in progress
before, and probably after, a particular time in the past.
– At 7 0’clock this morning I was having my breakfast.
• For descriptions.– Jan looked beautiful.She was wearing a green
dress.• To express an interrupted past activity.
– When the phone rang, I was having a shower.• To express an incomplete activity.
– I was reading a book during the flight.
Past simple or continuous?
• Sometimes both tenses are possible. The Past Simple focuses on past actions as complete facts.
• The Past Continuous focuses on the duration of past activities
Compare :• 1.A: I didn’t see you at the party last
night.• B: No. I stayed at home and watched the
football.• 2A: I didn’t see you at the party last
night.• B: No, I was watching the football at
home.
Present Perfect
When do we use Present Perfect?
When we talk about GENERAL EXPERIENCE without giving specific information (we don’t have to know WHEN you did something, we want to know IF you did it or not).
Tarantino has directed lots of blockbusters.
BUT: Tarantino directed “Kill Bill” in 2003.
2) Actions that are finished in the past but connected with present (actions in the past affected the present – you can see the result).
XPast Present
I’ve eaten a banana.
A plane has landed
When we want to express an unfinished period of time (that started in the past but continues now).
I have taken three tests this semester (this semester is not finished, it’s still going on).Helen has been to London once in her life (her life is not finished, it’s still going on).
