APRE News – Mr Brendan Schostakowski

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION - YEAR 5 GREEN This Friday 6 June Year 5 Green will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation with Fr Tom. ROSIES WINTER APPEAL With winter fast approaching and the nights getting colder, spare a thought for those in our city who are most at risk. These are “Homeless” in our midst. Their bed could well be a park bench tonight. For them the nights will be particularly cold. The Sts Peter and Paul’s Student Care and Concern Group is asking for your help. WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY THURSDAY 5 JUNE Thanks to our bodies, God has joined us so closely to the world around us that we can feel the desertification of the soil almost as a physical ailment, and the extinction of a species as a painful disfigurement. Let us not leave in our wake a swath of destruction and death which will affect our own lives and those of future generations (215). Like Saint Francis of Assisi, we are called to watch over and protect the fragile world in which we all live (216).

Pope Francis, “Joy of the Gospel”. The way we treat our planet today will determine how future generations of people and other living creatures enjoy this fragile planet as their home. Nature requires a very delicate balance for its survival. Let us maintain the balance by leaving a light footprint upon our earth. Let us protect our many species, our one planet and our one future!

God of Creation, You bless us with the gifts of this wonderful world you have created.

Help us to remember that our earth is fragile and needs our care. Make us people who respect and treasure

the preciousness of our natural environment so that all can enjoy it today and into the future.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 1 – 8 June. The theme for the week of prayer in 2014 is "Has Christ been divided?" (1 Cor 1:1-17). Paul wrote to the divided community at Corinth with this challenging question: Is Christ divided? During this week we reflect on what Paul is saying. Christian communities share the Scriptures and the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. Christians strive to show the love of Christ to those in need. However, there are differences in culture, tradition and doctrine. As Christians we need to find ways to build bridges through mutual understanding and the recognition of mutual gifts. FEAST OF PENTECOST SUNDAY 8 JUNE The Coming of the Holy Spirit Acts 2:1-11 and John 20:19-23 The Christian feast of Pentecost (meaning ‘fifty’ in Greek) marks the end of the Easter Season and is the name given to the Jewish feast of ‘Shavouth’ (meaning ‘weeks’) which was celebrated seven weeks (or fifty days) after the Passover. This Jewish feast, a harvest festival, also commemorated the giving of the Law to Moses on Mt Sinai. The gospel account from John (John 20:19-23) tells a story of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. It is a transformative power, unlocking doors, windows, hearts and minds. The Christians saw Pentecost as the beginning of a great God-inspired sharing of the fruits of the Spirit with a very needy world. They saw it as the beginning of the church’s mission, as we still do. That mission continues to this day because God has not ceased to breathe the Holy Spirit into the Church. The party may be over but the work must now begin.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge: A Pentecost Letter to Young People (2013)

Jesus, Treasure of Hope, we pray for faith and courage to continue your mission, with the power and persuasion of the Holy Spirit. Amen

from Treasures of Hope: Year A

Wishing you God’s blessings for the coming week. Brendan

Being safe after school This is a little reminder for all families that the school grounds are not a place for playing after school. Most afternoons after school there are groups of students and toddlers who are using the undercroft and the adventure playground for playing while waiting for parents. We also ask students and their and brothers and sisters to stay away from the oval playground outside of school hours. Using the grounds for playing without teacher supervision is not permitted and we ask that after school students promptly make their way home. Lost Property With Brisbane’s winter days often warming up considerably by lunchtime it is understandable that students will sometimes want to take their jumpers off during play. It won’t take long before we have a pile of school jumpers without names marked on them. We urge parents to please ensure names are clearly marked on jumpers and hats and to discuss with their children the importance of being responsible for uniform items that they may take off during the school day. Students and/or parents should check the lost property box in the undercroft if something has been misplaced. When we have large numbers of school jumpers and hats in the lost property box it can take volunteer parents and office staff hours to sort through and return lost items to students. Keep us up-to-date Don’t forget if you change any of your contact details ie. address, work/home/mobile phone numbers, emergency contacts, email addresses YOU NEED TO LET THE SCHOOL OFFICE KNOW immediately. We love to be kept up-to-date too!

Safe and Considerate Parking To help with traffic flow around the school, it is particularly important that parents refrain from parking too close to intersections around the school. In most cases yellow lines clearly mark these as no stopping areas. Parking too close to corners makes it dangerous for our school families trying to cross the road and makes things difficult for drivers turning at the surrounding intersections. We also ask drivers to please be considerate of our neighbours. At no point should cars stop to load/ unload children or park in the driveways of our school neighbours. Local police check the parking around schools on a regular basis to help keep it safe. Playground Champions Congratulations to Georgia (4R), Coco (2B), Will (2B), and Tom (3B) who were drawn out of the box as Playground Champions at our last assembly. They have been helping our school to be a happy and safe place for students. All the best for the week ahead. Have a great week, Damien Sullivan

We have the following lost property which is located in the Admin Block: 1. 2 x Mobile Phones;

2. A pair of ladies sunglasses;

3. A pair of prescription glasses; and

4. Containers left over from the cake stall donations to the fete.

‘Rosies – Friends on the Street’ Winter Collection

Rosies is a group of volunteers helping those less fortunate than us who live on the streets. Through using street vans, volunteers give food to the less fortunate in the community. These street vans operate five nights in a week in different places throughout Brisbane city and other parts of Queensland. This year, we are asking the Sts Peter and Paul’s community, to donate the following items for those less fortunate:

milo

tins of coffee

boxes of cup- a- soup sachets – No cans

sugar

cordial

toothbrushes

toothpaste

second hand blankets and sleeping bags in good condition These foods and other items will be collected on the 25

th of June.

Every week 1500 people visit the Rosies street vans across Queensland. Most feel like they have no one left to rely on and others feel abandoned in the community. Your donations of these items above will make a big difference in the lives of these less fortunate people. Written by Julia Martinelli (6 Green) on behalf of the Year6/7 Care and Concern Committee
