The following statistical survey of metropolitan city libraries throughout the world contains an analysis of the replies to a questionnaire issued on behalf of INTAMEL. The questionnaire was comprehensive and was devised to isolate the factors necessary for an evaluation of the perform- ance of metropolitan city libraries. Population was the first factor, followed by book stock, which included total book stock; number of books per head of population; total issues; issues per head of population; total expenditure; expenditure on books per head of population; cost per issue; percentage of total expenditure spent on books; etc.
Factors affecting staff were: total staff, total professional staff, per- centage of total expenditure spent on staff; issues per head of staff, etc.
Statistics relating to branches include the total number; the number with book stocks exceeding 20,000; average hours of opening; and shortest hours of opening.
All the statistics are set out in tabular form on the four pages follow- ing. In columns 21, 22, 23, 29 and 30, the figures are in Swiss francs.
Some of the statistics are clearly either errors or due to different bases of calculation. They can, therefore, only serve as points de dipart for further investigations.
