A new tower-type heavy lifting system

from Hydrospex makes its debut early

in 2009. A typical application will be

erecting large vessels on replacement

projects in refineries. ALEX DAHM talked

to Tjerko Jurgens, Hydrospex managing

director, at the company’s headquarters

in the Netherlands

Introducing the H-SETThe new Hydrospex H SET self erecting tower type heavy lifting system will lift 1,500 tonnes to a height of 60 m, without guy ropes, or 1,800 tonnes to 35 m

The Hydrospex Self

Erecting Tower, H-SET, is

a new tower type lift and

set system with a 1,800 tonne

capacity.

Tjerko Jurgens, Hydrospex

managing director, gets

straight to the point, “It

requires a 3.45 million euro

[US$4.3 million] investment

and you can compete with

– and beat – a 25 million dollar

crane.”

It is a modular

containerised system that

uses hydraulic strand jacks

mounted atop a set of

girders spanning two pairs

of hydraulically self-erecting

lattice towers. The whole

thing ships in 16 standard

20 foot containers, Jurgens

says. In those containers will

be the mast sections, the main

girders, small components and

the strand jacks. “Everything

is in the containers, the skid

tracks, even the lifting strands

and hooks,” Jurgens continues.

“This thing can lift

their own qualified personnel,

whereas, with our system

you send a supervisor with

the machine and hire local

labour, just for that job, to put

it together and to take it apart,”

says Jurgens.

Continuing with the

assembly, the lattice bracings

for the towers are pinned in

as the towers rise. The whole

thing is built at ground level.

There is no sky-work in its

assembly or operation. A

100 tonne mobile crane is

the only other external lifting

equipment needed. This assist

crane is used to put the main

girders and strand jacks into

position before the tower is

raised.

Commissioning started on

10 November and the first

H SET system, sold to

Burkhalter in the US (and

designated B SET for

Burkhalter), will be built to

the full height for a test lift

at the Hydrospex factory in

Hengelo, the Netherlands,

before shipping to the US on

1 December.

Burkhalter has a local

refinery where the job is to

erect two 1,000 tonne 50 m

tall vessels. “This is the typical

thing that my idea will be

good for. And I had a little bit

of luck in that there were no

cranes available, in the time

window that was given. It was

an existing live refinery so they

had no room or time to build

a crane. So, both the customer

and my client were forced to

look for an alternative. That

was the moment we presented

them with the H SET, Jurgens

explains.

Jurgens sees a bright future

for the H SET, “Our forecast

is to build four systems. We

can build a system like that in

about three months. I know

they will sell.”

SL60, Super Lift

(The 60 Ton Hydraulic Gantry)

With the SL60, Hydrospex launches a new generation Hydraulic Gantry into the market. The SL60 is the smallest gantry from the SL range, purely developed to work in confined spaces. With a capacity of 60 tons (600 kN) and a lifting height exceeding 16 feet (4946 mm) the SL60 is probably the most compact Hydraulic gantry in its class.

A closer look at the SL60 The main features of the SL60 can be defined as follows:

- Two stage full powered hydraulic cylinders.

- Self propelled wheels.. - Intellilift control system (optional). - Hydraulic Power pack is contained in the

unit. The dual-stage double acting hydraulic cylinder is an in-house development and fabrication. High grade steel material is used to obtain a lower weight and state of the art seals are used to eliminate any leakage.

The bases are made from high yield grade steel, again to reduce weight and maintain the maximum possible strength. Hydraulically powered wheels give a relatively high torque and propel the SL60 units almost effortlessly. A real feature is the self-contained design, meaning the hydraulics is integrated in each leg. This applies for pumps, valves and electric components. By placing all the hydraulics into the unit we have avoided Hydraulic hosing on the work area and only the electrical power source has to be connected to the unit. The Intellilift Control system (optional) is already used on most Hydrospex Hydraulic Gantries, and is a remote controlled operating system with features to obtain automatic synchronization between the units and overload detection. The Intellilift Control system works with a bi-directional data transmitting protocol and is therefore free of radio interference from other sources. All of the above features make the SL60 one of a kind, and it is exceptionally priced to compete with any other gantry manufacturer and comparable models.

SBL500, Super Beam Lift

(The 500 Ton Hydraulic Gantry)

With the SBL500, Hydrospex launches a new generation Hydraulic Gantry into the market. This development features specific properties and control systems to ensure optimum stability during operation. The SBL500 is the smallest and youngest gantry in the Hydrospex SBL range but with a capacity of 500 tons (5000 kN) and a lifting height reaching almost 30 feet (9 meters), the SBL500 is one of the most versatile and competitive gantries in its class. With respect to stability, it beats all existing systems in this capacity range.

A closer look at the SBL500 The main features of the SBL500 can be defined as follows:

- Three stage full powered hydraulic cylinders.

- Octagonal beam design. - Self propelled wheels. - Mechanical locking system. - Intellilift control system. - Hydraulic Powerpack is contained in the

unit. The three-stage double acting hydraulic cylinder is an in-house development and fabrication. High grade steel material is used to obtain a lower weight and state of the art seals are used to eliminate any leakage. Octagonal beams are made from T1, 100KSI steel, again to reduce weight and maintain the maximum possible strength. Maintenance free bearings are used with minimal clearances. To keep the SBL500 design as light as possible, the gantry is equipped with self propelled wheels.

The mechanical locking comes from the Hydrospex Gripper Jack design which can be applied on demand in any position. The Intellilift Control system is already used on all Hydrospex Hydraulic Gantries, and is a remote controlled operating system with features to obtain automatic synchronization and overload detection. By placing all the hydraulics into the unit we have avoided Hydraulic hosing on the work area and only the electrical power source has to be connected to the unit. SBL1000, Super Beam Lift

(The 1000 Ton Hydraulic Gantry)

With the SBL1000, Hydrospex launches a new generation Hydraulic Gantry into the market. This development features specific properties and control systems to ensure optimum stability during operation. The SBL1000 is the middle size gantry in the Hydrospex SBL series but with a capacity of 1000 tons (9100 kN) and a lifting height reaching almost 30 feet (9 meters), the SBL1000 is one of the most versatile and competitive gantries in its class. With respect to stability, it beats all existing systems in this capacity range.

A closer look at the SBL1000 The main features of the SBL1000 can be defined as follows:

- Three stage full powered hydraulic cylinders.

- Octagonal beam design. - Self propelled tank rollers.

The tank rollers are a proven design, but self propulsions and the use on a Hydraulic Gantry is new. The roller design is made to apply to most existing tracks and because of the large number of contact points, the track load and ground load is up to 70% lower than conventional designs. And a relief to the operator—wheel spin is history.

The mechanical locking comes from the Hydrospex Gripper Jack design which can be applied on demand in any position. SBL1100, Super Beam Lift

(The 1100 Ton Hydraulic Gantry)

With the SBL1100, Hydrospex launches a new generation Hydraulic Gantry into the market. This development features specific properties and control systems to ensure optimum stability during operation. With a capacity of 1100 tons (10000kN) and a lifting height reaching over 40 feet (12.3 meters), the SBL1100 is one of the most versatile and competitive gantries in its class.

A closer look at the SBL1100 The main features of the SBL1100 can be defined as follows:

- Three stage full powered hydraulic cylinders.

- Octagonal beam design. - Tank rollers. - Mechanical locking system. - Foldable beam system. - Intellilift control system. - Hydraulic Powerpack is contained in the

unit. The three-stage double acting hydraulic cylinder is an in-house development and fabrication. High grade steel material is used to obtain a lower weight and state of the art seals are used to eliminate any leakage. And a relief to the operator—wheel spin is history. The mechanical locking comes from the Hydrospex Gripper Jack design which can be applied on demand in any position. The foldable design of the beam makes the SBL1100 not only easy to transport (2 units can fit in a 20 ft. container or on one legal truckload) but also easily accessible into confined spaces. The erection of the beam is executed with two hydraulic cylinders and the process takes only one minute. Strand Jacks

(The complete Hydrospex range)

Strand Jacks were developed in the early seventies. Nowadays they are recognized as the most sophisticated lifting devices world wide. When Hydrospex first entered the heavy lifting market Strand Jack technology was at the very beginning of its development. Hydrospex immediately recognized the shortcomings of the existing technology and knew it could be done so much better and safer. Hydrospex re-designed Strand Jacks to her own standards thus improving reliability, durability, versatility and safety and made Hydrospex to what it’s world wide known as: the number one manufacturer of Strand Jacks. Not only the jacks themselves were improved, the market also needed a sophisticated, reliable and safe control system. Through the years Hydrospex developed an answer and presented the world with Smart Cylinder Control, or shortly known as SCC. This piece of software is capable of controlling up to 60 Strand Jacks simultaneously and is suitable for all types of strand jacks. A pre-installed computer is part of the standard delivery of Hydrospex Strand Jacks.

A closer look at Hydrospex Strand Jacks Strand Jacks basically exist of three different hydraulically operated jacks, being the Main Jack, the Top Mini Jack and the Bottom Mini Jack:

The Mini Jacks are responsible for opening and closing the top and bottom anchors. However, in case of an unexpected pressure-loss the anchors are mechanically closed, keeping the load fixed and giving maximum safety at all times.

One of the major improvements to Strand Jacks are the telescopic pipes in the very heart of the Strand Jacks. These pipes give full guidance to the strands at the most critical point: between the top anchor and the bottom anchor. Since all Hydrospex Strand Jacks are equipped with these pipes jamming of the strands, known as a Birdcage, is history.

Keeping your load under perfect control Hydrospex offers a computer with the SCC software as a standard part of the delivery.

SCC does not monitor the operation, it controls it. The operator can fill in several parameters which are often demanded by the customer, such as maximum allowable load at a certain point, maximum allowable difference between the jacks, etc. These values can be changed easily and modified at all times. Once the parameters are set SCC does the rest.

Powering your Strand Jacks Besides the Strand Jacks and the control system Hydrospex also offers a wide range of Power Packs to supply the jacks with the required power. Here various options are possible. A Power Pack can supply more than one jack with oil, dependant on your preferences. Of course each Strand Jack can also be supplied with its own Power Pack. Hydrospex Power Packs can either be electrically driven or by diesel fuel. The Hydrospex Power Pack range starts with a 3 kW (4 hp) electrical Power Pack and goes up to a 120 kW (161 hp) diesel Power Pack.

Different options are possible, so please consult Hydrospex to discuss your requirements and the possibilities.

Additional equipment Hydrospex offers also additional, but often required tools to make a strand jack-operation more convenient, for example the Recoiler – Strand Guide combination. As the Strand Jacks jack up the load the top end of the strands becomes longer and longer. The Hydrospex Recoiler system automatically winds up the loose strands and, of course, unwinds them when lowering a load. This is an unpropelled system that is driven by the stiffness of the strands itself.

The Hydrospex Strand Jack range Hydrospex offers a wide range of Strand Jacks varying from 300 kN up to 8500 kN. HSL300 - 30 metr. tonnes (33 Sh. Te) HSL450 - 45 metr. tonnes (49 Sh. Hydrospex, The Heavylift Company: Without any doubt, most of the worlds leading clients in the heavy transportation industry are choosing Hydrospex to be their partner when they are in need of specialized Heavy Lift Equipment. Our wide experience in development and fabrication has brought Hydrospex to become the marked leader in this industry. Innovative and creative engineering is our minimum standard when we start out with developments of our products, this philosophy brought Hydrospex on edge when we turned existing products like Strand jacks and Hydraulic gantries into day to day heavylift tools. Adjacent to lifting is horizontal movement by means of skidding systems or trailers. SPMT trailers are commonly known on the market. Nonetheless Hydrospex sensed a market demand for innovative trailers. This was the starting point for a new product that can be considered as “the missing link in our product range”. Introducing The HSPMT 750.

Where our Skidding systems only provide load movement in straight lines, the new HSPMT system gives you freedom to move any load up to 900 ton in any direction. The HSPMT750 has similar functionality as any other SPMT on the market, except it’s slim design and lower access height make it more user friendly and provides better accessibility in confined spaces. It is a three-axle modular system that comes in two executions. HSPMT750 with all axles propelled, and the un-propelled HMT750. HSPMT and HMT trailers can be combined into a six axle trailer using one power pack. The combined trailer will give you 150 ton payload capabilities.

If you need more, it’s possible. In total the standard control system can operate 6 modules (18 lines) with adjacently another 6 modules, creating a transportation platform of approximately 20 x 5 meters with a payload capability of 900 metric tons! Functionality Dare to be different! This starts by having a closer look to the standard dimensions. We have managed to create a design that is accessible into seaworthy containers. Because of the ultra-light design you can stack 4 modules (12 lines) in a 20 feet container.

In descent we offer an access height of 650mm, lower than any self propelled trailer on the market today. Fully extended it will reach 1000mm. Having an overall width of 2300mm it will give you optimum maneuverability.

Intellidrive Controlling heavy objects requires complete survey and control of the entire operation. This is where we take distance to the existing systems. For this application Hydrospex developed a system called “Intellidrive”, a plug and play control system that recognizes the trailer configuration and automatically adopts all steering requirements to your specific trailer combination. “Intellidrive” is a wireless control system that uses the same technology as our well known “Intellilift” system, Hydrospex has developed for Hydraulic Gantries. In every configuration, the whole system can be operated by just one person. No difficult software configurations; just connect, select and drive!

Powering Driving the HSPMT configurations requires a diesel operated power pack. We have managed to design a power pack with only 600mm height. Depending on the configurations of the trailers, you can connect up to 4 power packs. Two types of power packs are available:

• 33 kW Diesel: max. cap. 3 (un)propelled trailers • 7,5 kW Diesel: max. cap. 3 un-propelled trailers

(for use in towing mode) These power packs fit on both front and rear side of a unit. To avoid collision with curbs or other obstructions, the power pack can be tilted under an angle of max. 10° Modular design of the units allow easy through-linking of the power pack’s hydraulic-hoses. Technical Data Payload: 750 kN per trailer Self Weight: 6000 kg Speed: 5 km/h (unloaded) Speed: 2 km/h (loaded) Steering range: -45° to +45° Lifting range: 638 – 1000 mm (362 mm stroke) Max. no. of trailers: 2 rows of 6 trailers Power pack: 33 kW per Power Pack (propelled) Power pack: 7,5 kW per Power Pack (un-propelled)

Skidding Systems

Take a closer look at Hydrospex Compensated Skidding Systems Background information: Skidding is an ancient transportation technology. The Egyptians built their pyramids by the use of a skidding technique to move stones of impressive dimensions and weight. Over the years a variety of skids were used to move heavy structures, mostly by using skid-tracks and lubricated skid materials.

Technical basics With the ’PC Controlled Hydraulic Compensated Skidding technology’ we have added a major innovation to the skidding method: Hydrospex has introduced the use of a skidshoe that is pushed over a skidtrack by a hydraulic push-pull cylinder.

Special PTFE coated blocks are placed on the skidtracks to reduce friction. The PTFE coating guarantees a friction of less than 5%’. To compensate for uneven foundation surfaces a hydraulic lifting cylinder has been installed. This cylinder lifts the object from its support and it compensates the load during travelling. This results in a constant spread of the level and the load. Operation and control Our SCC control system is applied to control and correct the motion of the push-pull system and the levelling. Pressure sensors and stroke encoders are connected to the skidshoes and to the push-pull cylinder. Both are connected to the PC-system. The SCC skidding software can control a maximum of 12 skidshoes synchronously. Hydrospex Compensated Skidding Systems are available in two versions. A system constructed to move a 1250kN load per skidshoe and one that will move a 6000kN load per skidshoe.

Applications

Compensated Skidding Systems are applied for load-outs in general, to move oilrigs and they are widely used in machine moving industries.

Introduction:

With our HLC weighing system Hydrospex introduces a

sophisticated yet affordable weighing system into the market.

The HLC weighing systems are based on a scale and a SCC

wireless transmitter system. Scales of different capacities can

work with the same transmitter.

The receiver, that is a rugged notebook computer, can read the

load of 8 scales at the same time.

Program capabilities are not limited to provide information about

scale load and total-load, but by input of scale coordinates into

the software, the system can tell you exactly where the

centre-point-of-gravity (or COG) is located.

Since our scales are engineered around the principle of a

Belly-construction, these scales will outperform any hydraulic

fluid weighing system with respect of accuracy.

Hydrospex, The Heavylift Company: All around the world customers in transport, offshore and civil industry, that are in need of special solutions for their projects, turn to Hydrospex. We explore the limits of possibilities of our engineering know-how and production facilities. Today at Hydrospex over 75 skilled professionals in the field of engineering, manufacturing and operating are seeking for new challenges, everyday Our motto:

Nothing is impossible! Jack and Pack: Although the conventional Climbing jack is around for mankind in the heavy lift industry, still today every respectable rigging company is relying on this type of equipment on daily bases. It is always been a Hydrospex objective to bring innovation to existing products and in all honesty on a relative simple product like a climbing jack this is not easy.

However, looking closely at this product it was quit clear that there were still problem areas in the existing designs to be made. Hydrospex has added some completely new features which gives the application totally new dimensions. Principle: The Jack and Pack principle is based on a Hydraulic Jack with the rod pointing down. The structure has two areas under which timbers can be stacked. In general the jacks are positioned under the object and by extending the rod the object can be lifted about 170 mm. After the jack-up timbers can be placed crosswise and by repeating this cycle a jack-up operation can be performed. Pro and contra: The operation is simple and efficient. It requires a skilled hand of the operator and man hands around the jack to stack the timbers. Potential hazards can be detected in the field of synchronization between the stroke of the jacks. De-synchronization can lead to side loads that makes the object and jacks instable. With respect to the “power-tools” on the marked this it the immediate drawback. Most existing climbing jacks cannot resist side loads. Although in most brochures a maximum side load figure is specified, in reality it is an undetectable or readable load.

The HCL series: The Hydrospex HCL climbing jacks are available in capacities of 50 Te, 125Te, 150 Te, 200 Te, 300 Te and 500 Te. On demand we can produce special products. The major improvements we have achieved are:

- Working pressure 400 bar. - Double acting Jacks. - Removable housings. - Side loads up to 10%

Hydrospex Climbing jacks are sold in combination with Hydraulic powerpacks, specially designed for jacking purposes. Meaning multiple outlet flows to obtain synchronization between the jacks, not relative to equal jack loading. The CLS jacks are designed to work with timber sizes:

- 100 x 100 x 1000mm. - 150 x 150 x 1000mm.

.

Jack and Pack Automation: For special project we have designed a special control system that makes it possible to synchronize and correct a larger number of jacks. This control system is based on our reliable SCC Control software.

Introducing The B-SET Towerlift systems

The B-Set series, is basically a self-erecting-tower-lift system, that enables you to build a free standing gantry from ground level, that can be erected up to a height of 80 meters and with a lifting capacity up to 2400m ton. Lifting and Skidding is executed by using standard Hydrospex Strandjacks,. The B-set can be supplied in various capacities and heights, but they are all build with standard components, this enables you to upgrade your system into a larger system in the future.

Fields of operation: The B-Set is a versatile lift-system that can be used in a wide variety of operations, like erecting of reactor vessels on petrochemical plants or lifting of shipyard cranes. If compared to big ringer-cranes, the B-set can outperform them on mobilization-time and transportation costs. The B-SET1260 (1200ton capacity on 60 meters height) can be shipped in 28 container loads anywhere in the world. Technical design Features: Self Erection: One of the unique features on the design is the patented design of the self-erecting-mast system. At ground level there are 2 lift-containers per mast. On the inside of each container there is a hydraulic mechanism, which lift the mast barrels in steps of 300mm per stroke. The mast barrels have an octagon shape. They are made from S690Q steel and welded with robot technology to obtain perfect quality to strength and dimensions. Bracing System: To obtain stability in the mast, we make use of a

sophisticated bracing system. Once the barrels are extracted above the lift container level, adjustable bracings are installed by hand. To reduce weight the bracings are made from high-grade steel.

Skidding System: The gantry is commissioned on skidtracks that also reduces the foot-print-load. Strandjacks are used to pull the gantry system in the desired direction.

Lifting: To lift the load, the B-Set makes use of Hydrospex Strandjacks with a capacity of 650m Ton each. Depending on the B-set configuration, 2 or 4 Strandjacks are used. Side-shifting the load can be achieved by a skid-system that is operated from the Strandjack powerpacks.

Operating system: To have the B-Set under control, we make use of two advanced PC-Control systems. The primary system is used to lift all individual mast corners within an accuracy of 3mm between all corners. It automatically lifts the towers with an average speed of 3 meters per hour. The secondary system is our proven SCC control system to operate all strandjacks. All powerpacks and control-systems are powered form a 100kW generator

B-Set configurations: B-Sets can be delivered in 4 specific variations. B-Set1060/2: A 1000 ton 4 mast system with 2 main girders and strandjacks, 60 meter lifting height. Lifting capacity: 1000mTon.
