Katie:Hi,I'mKatiefromwellnessmama.com.WelcometoepisodethreeoftheWellnessMamaPodcastwhereIprovidesimpleanswersforhealthierfamilies.Thisepisodeistheoralhealthepisode.Andourinterestingfacttodayisthattheaveragehumanproduces25,000quartsofsalivaduringtheirlifetime.That'senoughtofilltwoswimmingpools.Andsalivaisimportantforprotectingtoothenamel,whichisthehardestpartofthehumanbody.Today'sepisodeisactuallyaninterviewthatIdidseveralyearsago.ItwaspartoftheHealthyMouthWorldSummit,alongwithdentalexpertsfromaroundtheworld.I'minterviewedbyWillRevakoforawellness.com.Andthisisreplayedwithpermission.IfyouwannafindoutmoreabouttheHealthyMouthWorldSummit,gotowellnessmama.com/go/healthymouth.Andhere'stheinterview.Will:Solet'sjustjumprightintothis.Howdidyoubecomeinterestedinoralhealthtobeginwith?Katie:It'sbeenkindofagradualprocessforme,actually.AsIswitchedtoamorenaturaldietandlifestyleaspartofmywellnessjourney,itcamenaturally.ButIalsoresisteditforalongtime,sinceI'dalwaysbeenundertheimpressionthatoralhealthwassomewhatseparateofnutritionanditrevolvedmainlyaroundbrushing-and-flossingcare.SoasIstartedtoreadthisinformationandseeitinmyownmouth,Iwasfascinated,butalsoalittlehesitant.AndI'dhadalotofcavitiesasakid,andIknewIwantedtoavoidthisformychildren.AndIreadbookslike"CureToothDecay"and"NutritionandPhysicalDegeneration"byDr.WestonPrice.Andtheytalkedabouttheroleofnutritioninoralhealth,andthepossibilitythatyoucouldactuallyhealorreversetoothdecay,andimproveoveralloralhealthwithnutritionandlifestylechanges.Andthepiecesstartedtofallintoplaceinmyownlife.Anditjuststartedtomakealotofsensethatjustastherestofthebodyiscapableofregeneratingitselfthattheteethwouldbeabletodothisalsoifwegaveittherighttools.Will:Yeah.Exactly.Verywellput.Sowhatpersonalexperiencehaveyouhadwithimprovingyourfamily'soralhealth?Katie:It'sbeenprettydrastic.Togiveyoualittlebackstory,asakid,Ihadmyfairshareofdentalproblems.Startingwith,Ihadapieceoftoughtissuebetweenmyfrontteeththatletmehavealovelyembarrassinggapbetweenthemformostofthebeginningofmylife.Andadentisteventuallycutthatandpulledmyteethtogetherwithrubberbands,whichwaspainful.Andthenafterthat,Ihadreallyinflamedgumsthereforaverylongtimeandascarthatwasreallynoticeableinmygums,anditdidn'tseemtobehealing.Andlateron,Ihadtohavetwobabyteethpulledbecausetheywouldn'tfalloutontheirown.Ihadfourimpactedwisdomteethpulled.AndIhadbracesforalmostthreeyears,includingthegamutofheadgear,rubberbands,theplateonthetopofmymouth,thewholeshebang.Priortobraces,myteethwerehorriblyoutofalignment.IactuallyaskedmymomtotrytofindapictureofmyteethbeforebracessoIcouldshowyouguys.Andshecouldn'tfindonebecausejustIdidn'tsmile,basically.AndthewholetimeIhadbracesandformonthsafterwards,mygumswerealwaysreallyinflamedandpainful.AndIlaterpartiallytiedthistoalatexallergythatwasfromtherubberbandsandthebraces.ButIdid,Ibrushedandflossedreligiouslypriortohavingbraces,whileIhadbraces,anditdidn'teverseemtodoanythinggoodforthepuffygums.Andwhenmybraceswereremoved,thepiecesofthesurfaceofmyteethwereactuallypulledoffwiththebracketsthatthey'vebeengluedtotheteeth,andIgotseveralcavitiesinthemonthsthatfollowedthat.Andmyteethalsobecamereallysensitive,andIcouldn'teveneatcoldfoodor

drinksomethingcoldwithoutcringing.Andthethoughtofbitingintoapopsicle,justthinkingaboutit,mademeliterallyshiver.Soinhighschool,Icontinuedtobrushandflosstwiceaday,regularlyperdentist'sinstructions.Mydietwasdefinitelyveryfarfromoptimal,andIcontinuedgettingcavities,butIattributedthistothesugarsittingonmyteeth.Whichiswhatmydentisthadexplainedwasthecause,thatyouknowthesugarsittingonyourteeth,andtheplaqueopensthedoorfordentalproblems.Sofastforwardpastcollegeandgettingmarried,andmydiethadimprovedsome.ButIcontinuedtostillgettheoccasionalcavity.Andwiththepregnancywithourfirstchild,myteethbecameevenmoresensitiveandseveralcavitiescroppedup,andmydentistexplainedthatthiswasjustnormalduringpregnancy.Nowinhindsight,thatprobablyshouldhavebeenmyfirstcluethattherewassomeroleofnutritioninoralhealth.Because,obviously,there'sanincreasedneedinthebodyforminerals,andvitaminswhenyou'repregnant,sincethebabyneedsthose.Soimportantnutrientsfrommybody,orthefoodsIwaseatingweregettingpassedtothebaby.Andiftheyweren'tenoughforme,thenthingslikemyhealthormyteethwouldsuffer.Sothatshouldhavebeenaclue.Butoverthenextcoupleofyearsandthroughmynexttwopregnancies,IcontinuedtofindinformationthatcontradictedtheconventionaltrainingI'dhadinnutritionschool.Andalso,theycontradictedwithwhatthedentistwassaying.AndsoIslowlymovedawayfromlowfat,highfiberdietthatstillcontainedsugartoahighhealthy-fatdietwithmoderateproteinandmostofmycarbscamefromvegetables,orfruits,orstarcheslikesweetpotatoesinsteadofprocessedfoodsorsugar.AndIfocusedoneatingforhealthandforreplenishingnutrientsnotjustforfoodandforbeingfull.SoItriedtochoosefoodsatmealsthatwouldactuallyboostmynutrientslevels,notjustfillmeup.Andduringthistime,Ididn'tdevelopanynewcavitieseventhroughthesetwomorepregnancieswhich,atthetime,IjustthoughtwasbecauseIwasn'teatingsugarandstarchyfoods.AndIfiguredthat'swhythecavitieshadstopped.ButasIlearnedabouttraditionalfoodsandtheroleofguthealth,Ialsostartedeatingfermentedfoodsandhealthyfatslikecoconutoil,andghee,andtallow,andgrass-fedbutter,oilyfish.AndIalsostartedtakinghigh-qualityprobiotics.AndIsawimprovementinmanyareasofmylife,myskin,myhair,howwellIcouldtan,butmyteethwerethemostsurprisingpart.NotonlydidIcontinuenottogetcavities,butmytoothsensitivitywasslowlyvanishing.AndmyteethweregettingwhitereventhoughIwasn'tdoinganythingexternaltowhitenthem.AndI'dhadyellowishteethsinceantibioticuseasachild.Sothatwasshockingtome,becauseIhadbeentoldthatwasaprettypermanentthing.Soduringthistime,I'dalsostartedmakingandusingmyownhomemadedentalproducts,includingaremineralizingtoothpasteandatoothpowderthatImade.Ioccasionallybrushedwithbakingsoda,butitwasmostlytheremineralizingtoothpaste,andthisseemedtowhitenmyteethevenmore.AndwhenIaddedintheoralwellnessblendtothetoothpasteandstartedusingthatdaily,thelastofmytoothsensitivitywentaway,andmypuffygumswentaway.Andmyteethalsocontinuedtowhitenwithoutanycommercialproducts.SoIfoundthatfascinating.Butwhatreallycementedtheideaofnutritionandoralhealthforme,wasIhadastressfultimeinmylifewhenIwastravelingalotandnutritionwasn'tasoptimal,andmyregulardentalcheck-uprevealedthatIhadsomesoftspotsonmyteeth,andtheplaquehadcomeback.ButIalsohadone"officialcavity,"anditwasn'tverybad,buttheystillsuggestedgettingitfilledprettysoon.SoIwasn'tinahugerushbuttheyalsowarned

meIhadbeginningstagesofgingivitisinseveralplaceswhich,thanksto,like,Listerinecommercialsinthe'90s,reallyfreakedmeout.SoIhadeveryintentionofgettingthecavityfilled,andIwasgonnacontinuewithregulardentalappointments,but,ofcourse,lifehappenedasitusuallydoes.AndIdidn'tgetaroundtoschedulingtheappointmentforseveralmonths.AndbythetimeIfinallyhadtimetoscheduleit,Ihadreadmoreandmoreabouttheabilityofteethtoheal.SoIdecidedtoholdoffalittlelongerandtrysomeofthemorenaturalmethodssinceitwasn'tbotheringmeatall.AndIrereadthebook"CureToothDecay"byRamielNagel.Ireadaccountsofotherpeoplewhohadreverseddentaldamage,soIfigureditwouldn'thurttogiveitatryaslongasIwasn'thavinganyotherpainorproblems.AndsoIgavemyselfaspecificdietandsupplementregimenthatIwasjustgonnasticktoforafewmonthsandseeifithelps.AndInoticedthatmyteethdidseemstronger,andtherewasnoplaqueonmyteeth.TheroughspotsonfrontofmyteethfromwhereIhadhadbracesalsobecamewhiterandsmootheragain,whichwassurprising.ButIalsofoundoutduringthistimethatIwasalsoexpectingourfourthbaby.Soasidenote,thisdietalsopromotesfertility,justgonnaputthatoutthere.AndIdecidedtocontinueontheregimenforthepregnancysinceallofthethingsIwasdoingwerealsoverysupportiveofahealthypregnancy.Anditalsoendedupbeingmyeasiestpregnancybyfar,myeasiestdelivery.Idon'tthinkit'scoincidencebutI'mhappyabout.AnditwasnextfallbeforeIfinallygotaroundmakingitbacktothedentist.AndIknow,ifanydentistwerelistening,everysixmonths.Igotit.I'llsticktothatfromnowon.ButIdidn'tmentiontothedentistaboutthecavitiesorthesoftspots,andhedidn'tmentioniteither.Itonlytookthedentistabout,orthehygienist,aboutfiveminutestocleanandscrapemyteethinsteadofthe30minutesor40minutesitusedtotakethem.AndIthoughtshewasstilljustcheckingandshetoldmeshewasdone.ThehygienistactuallyaskedmeifI'dstartedusingfluorideorfluoridetoothpaste,andthat'swhathadmadethechangebecausemychartindicatedthatIdidn'twantthemtousethefluoridetreatmentonme.AndItoldher,"No,I'mnotusingfluoridebutI'vebeentryingtotakebettercareofmyteeth."Whichwastrue,butitwasfromtheinsidenottheoutside.Andwhenthedentistcheckedmyteeth,hedidn'tmentionanyoftheproblemareasorthecavitythathehadseenbefore.Andhedidremarkthatmygumslookedgreat.SoIwas...that'swhatcementeditformeisthatitactuallyhad...mybodyhadactuallybeenabletohealthatcavity.Andsincethen,Ihaven'thadanydentalproblemsandIcontinuetoget,youknow,goodcheckmarksonmygumhealth.Will:Soletmerecapthis.Youdidn'tgetthebestgenetictendencytowards,youknow,Imean,it'snotlikeyouhadthepristinegenetichealthanddidn'thaveyourshareofdentalissuesinthebeginning.It'sbeautifulexcellent,excellent.Ididn'tknowthatstory,that'ssocool.Katie:Yeah,sonowthatyouknowmydentalhistory...Will:Yeah,really,wow.So,obviously,youhaveexperienceofthis.Whatroledoesnutritionplay,fromyourunderstanding,inachievingoptimaloralhealth?Katie:Thisisthepartthatwassofascinatingtome.MybackgroundisinnutritionsoIamalittlebiasedtowardsit.ButwhatIfoundinmyresearchandmyexperienceisthatnutritionmadeahugedifferenceinmyoralhealthtransformation.Andwhat'sinteresting,sinceIpostedaboutthisonmyownblog,I'vegotten

dozensofemailsfromreaderswhohavehadsimilarresults.Andifyouthinkaboutit,itmakesalotofsensethatwhatyouputintoyourbodyandwhatgoesintoyourteethinternallywouldhaveanimpactasmuchasyouputonthemexternally.Inmyresearch,whatfascinatedmewastheworkofdentistslikeDr.Price,whodocumentedtheoralhealthofpeoplearoundtheworldandcomparedtheirnativediets.Andhefoundpopulationswhodidn'thaveanykindoforalcarelikebrushingorflossing,somewhoevenfiledtheirteethdowntoapoint,buttheyhadverylowratesoftoothdecay.Andalotofthemhadwonderfullyfacedwhiteteeth,andtheydidn'thaveaccesstomoderndentalcare.Andhefoundthisacrossseveraldifferentpopulationsacrosstheworldsoitwasn'tjustageneticthing.Andwhatwasaninterestingnote,healsofoundthatwhenthesepeoplewereremovedfromtheirnativeenvironmentandtheirnativediet,theywouldalsogettoothdecayattheratethattherestofuswould.Soontheoppositeendofthisspectrum,hefoundallthesemodernpopulationswhowerebrushingandflossing,andwhodidhaveaccesstomoderndentistry,buteventhechildrenwerebecomingwildlyaffectedbytoothdecay.Sohetheorizedandhelatertestedthatnutritionplayedareallybigroleinoralhealth.Andthatcertaintraditionalfoodscanmakeabigdifferenceinoralhealth.Andatthispoint,IalsoreadabouttheworkofDr.EdwardMellanbyandhiswife,Dr.MayMellanby.Dr.EdwardMellanbyactuallydiscoveredvitaminDanddiscoveredthatitwas...deficiencywaslinkedtorickets.Andtheydiscoveredthattoothstructureisdeterminedduringthechild'sgrowtheveninutero,andthatpoorlyformedteetharemorelikelytodecaywhichisprettylogical.Sothesedoctorsallreachedsimilarnutritionalconclusionsafteralltheiryearsofresearch.Mainlythattoothstructureandhealthislargelydeterminednotjustbytheexternalfactors,butbydietaswell.Andthethreemainfactorsthatseemedtobeprettycommonamongstbothofthose,Dr.PriceandtheDoctorsMellanby,wasthatthedietaryfactorsthataffectedoralhealthwerethepresenceofenoughmineralsinthediet,thepresenceofespeciallyfatssolublevitaminsinthediet.AndDr.PriceespeciallyfocusedonvitaminK2,whichhecalledactivatorX,andwhichwenowknowaspresent,especiallyinrawgrass-feddairyandgrass-fedmeats.Andalso,thethirdthingwashowbio-availablethesenutrientswereandhowwellthebodywasabsorbingthem.Whichtheyfoundwaspartiallylinkedtothepresenceofphyticacidintheacidinthedietwhichblockedmineralabsorption.So,forme,thismadealotofsense.Frommyowndietarychangesandtheresultingoralhealthchangesinmyswitchtomorenutrient-densefood,Ihadstartedconsumingalotmoremineralsfromfoodsmainlybonebrothsoup,seafood,whichhasalotofiodineandmagnesium.AndIhadaddedinawholelotofhealthyfats,likefermentedcodliveroil,grass-fedbutter,grass-fedmeat,andtallow,alotofpasturedeggsandorganmeats,whichallhavefatsolublevitamins.Sotheadditionalofprobioticrichfoodsandthegelatinfromthebonebrothalsohelpedthatthirdfactor,whichwashowwellmybodywasabsorbingthem.AndsinceIremovedtheprocessedfoods,Ihadgottenridofthebiggestsourcesofphyticacidfromgrains,andbeans,andnuts,andIhadalsogottenridofsugar.SoDr.PriceandevenmodernresearcherslikeRamielNagel,theyexplainthatthedietcanevenaffecttoothspacingandtheformation,andI'msocurioustowatchthiswithmyownchildren.MyhusbandandIbothhadcavitiesinourlife,andwebothhadbracesforalongtime.Andsofar,ourchildren,especiallytheyounger

ones,who'vehadthemostbenefittedfrommyswitchindiethaveverywell-formedteethandwiderjawlinesthaneitheroneofushad.SoI'mreallyfascinatedtowatchhowthatdevelopsthroughouttheirchildhood.Buttome,thisnutritionbasedmodelmakesalotmoresensethanthetheorythattoothdecayissimplyfrombacteriainthemouththatareeatingsimplesugarsthatproduceacidsthatruinourenamel.Certainly,Ithinktheexternalfactors,likesugarontheteethandthatacid,aredefinitelyapartofthestory.Butifyouthinkaboutitlogicallythatdoesn'tmakesensethatitcouldbethewholestory.Becauseliketherestofourbodies,ourmouthsarebreedinggroundforgoodandbadbacteria.Andtheyareanecosystem,inasense,inthemselves.Sodespiteourbestbrushingandflossingregimen,evenifweareswishingwithhydrogenperoxideevery10minutes,we'restillinhalingandexposedtothousandsofgermsperhour,sothere'sreallynowaytocompletelyeradicatethebacteria.But,perhaps,wecan,fromtheinside,strengthenourteethtoresistthat.AndtherearenumerousexamplesofpopulationsthatDr.Pricestudiedthatconsumedcarbohydratesinlargeamountsbuttheydidn'tevenbrushtheirteethatall.Buttheydidn'tsufferfromtoothdecay.AndtheotherthingthatI'vethoughtaboutlatelyiswe'vegotthemostrecentsurveysareshowingthatupwardsof90%oftheU.S.populationsuffersfromtoothdecayorgumissuesinsomecapacity.Sowecouldeithersurmisethatonly10%ofpeopleareactuallybrushingandflossingtheirteethandfollowingtheirdentist'sadvice.Orwecanconsiderthatotherfactorsareinvolved,andstartgoingbacktothetraditionalmethodsandlookingwhatcouldbetherootofthisnotjusttheexternalcause.AndfromtheresearchI'vedone,theseexternalfactors,theydon'tjustincludediet,butthebalanceofmineralsinourbody,ourbloodchemistry,ourhormonelevels,andthequalityofoursaliva,whichisalivingsubstance,it'sactuallynourishingoutteethfromtheoutsidebutit'screatedfromtheinside.Somytheoryisthatuntilwestopfocusingsolelyontheexternal,butalsoevaluatetheinternalthenwe'regonnacontinueseeingdeterioration.Will:Sofromyourperspective,whatwouldanoptimaldiet?Imean,you'vediscussedalotofthepointshere.Butlet'sreallygetdowntothebrasstackshere.Whatwouldanoptimaldietforhealingthemouthbefromyourangle?Katie:It'sagreatquestion.Andfortunately,Ithinkthedietthat'sbestfororalhealthisalsogonnapromotehealthinsomanyotherareaslikeweightcontrol,obviously,fertilityinmycase,brainhealth,guthealth,andeventhebody'sabilitytoabsorbandusevitaminD,whichisalsoimportantfororalhealth.AndIjustmentionedtherisingratesoftoothdecayamongthepopulationso,obviously,thestandarddietthatwe'reeatingisnotthemostsupportiveoforalhealth.WhatIfoundtobethemostbeneficialinmyownfamilyisthesimilardiettotheonesuggestedbyDr.Price,andRamielNagel,andalotofothernaturalhealthpractitionersthatarenowpromotingthis.AndIwassoexcitedtofindtheirscientificexplanationsbecauseitwasgivingmethebackingtowhatIhaddiscoveredinmyownlifeandhelpingmetounderstandwhyitwasworking.Wecanprobablyallagreethatahighsugardietisnotgoodforourteethorourbody,internallyorexternally.Butadietthatistrulysupportiveoforalhealth,itgoesdeeperthanjustgettingridofsugarandprocessedfoodsotheyarenotsittingonourteeth.Butthatisagreatfirststep.SomerecentstudiesI'veseenhavereportedthatmanyofusaredeficientinmineralslikecalcium,magnesium,andphosphorus.Andsugar-containingfoodsandprocessedfoodsthataredevoidofmineralsactuallydepletethesemineralsinourbody.Sothat'sanotherlogicalreasonwhythesefoodswouldbecausing

Granted,youcanusealittlemoreadultlanguage,ifyourkidsareolderthanfive.Butwetookthekidstothefarmersmarket,wetookthemtothelocalfarms,andtothegrocerystore,andweletthemseethedifferenceforthemselvesbetweenthehealthierfoodsandtheunhealthierfoods.Weevenletthemtry,like,real,organicrawcheeserightnexttopasteurized,processedcheese,andtheycouldtastethedifference.Iusuallyletthemhelpmepickmealstheylikeinmealplanning.AndifIcan,andit'snotjustboilingsoup,Iusuallyletthemtrytohelpmecookalso.Soforthemostpart,ourkidsareprettyadventurouseatersnow.Wedoactuallyhaveacoupleofrulesatthetable,allthathavegonealongwaytomakingthatadjustmenteasier.Andwithfourkidssoclosetogether,ifwehaveoneofthemthathasanegativeopinionoffoodthenvoicesitoutloud,ittendstogodownthelineprettyquickly.Soourrulesarethatweputasmallamountofeverythingwecookoneachchild'splate.Andtheyhavetotrythatonebiteofeverythingbeforetheycanrequestasecondsofanything.Andthiswaytheyknowtheyhavetotrythings,butit'snotmenacingbecausethere'snotahugepileofliverthatthey'regonnahavetoeatiftheydon'tloveit.Andthey'reneverrequiredtoeatiftheytrulyaren'thungrybecauseIdon'twannaforcefoodifthey'retrulylisteningtotheirbody.Butourfamilypolicyisthatallofuswillseatatthetableduringmealtimesothatwecanhaveachancetotalkasafamily.Andwhiletheydon'thavetolikeoreateverythingthat'sgiventothem,theyarenotallowedtocomplainaboutit,orspititout,ormakenegativecomments.AndtheexampleI'veusewiththemisthat,justlikeiftheydrewapictureormadeartwork,orbuiltathing,andtheywerereallyproudofitandtheybroughtittome,Iwouldneverbelike,"Oh,that'suglyIdon'tlikeit."FoodsthatIprepareforthemisthewaythatIcareforthemandshowthemIlovethem.Sowhenthey'relike,"Eww,Idon'tlikeit,"that'sarudethingandtheyhavetolearnnottosaythat.SoIdon'twannasoundlikewe'resticklersfortherulesthough.Mostofthetime,they'reaskingforextrabroccoli,ormorebutter,ormorefish,ormoresoup.Thefirstcoupleofweekswerealittleroughwiththeolderones,butnow,it'srarethattheydon'tlikeafood.Will:Wow,that'sawesome.That'sawesome.Sodoyouhaveanylast-minutesuggestionsortipsforourlistenersatthispoint?Katie:Yeah,myencouragementtoothermomsandfamiliesortoanyonelisteningwouldbetojusttryadoptingsomeofthesedietaryandlifestylechanges.Wedon'thavearampantincreaseinouroralhealthproblemsbecausewehavealackoffluorideinourdiets,orbecausewehavealackofdentalfillings,oralackofrootcanals.Butthere'sanunderlyingcausethat'smakingusmorelikelytosufferfromtheseproblemsinthefirstplace.Andforme,addressingtheinternalcausenotonlyhelpedmyoralhealth,butmyoverallhealth,andmychildren's'healthsomuch.Anditjustmakessensethatwhatweputintoourbodiesimpactsallaspectsofhealth,evenourteethandourgums.Themethodsaremagic.They'resupportingabodyandtheyareallowingittohealandrepairitself.So,attheleast,removingthechemicalsfromourlivesandimprovingournutritionisgonnahavepositivebenefitsinsomanyareas.Butit'salsogonnahaveoralhealthboostingandeffectsaswell.AndIalsojustencourageeveryonetodotheirownresearch,evenofthethingsthatI'vesaidbecausewe'reinanexcitingtimeandwe'reseeingthemeldingofnewresearchthat'semergingconstantly,butit'sfittinginwiththingsthattraditionalcultureshavesaidforyears.SoIthinkwe'reinareallyexcitingtime.
