Emilys Slowing Isolation
Towards the end of the play, we see how Emilys large family slowly crumbles.
Show how Emily slowly becomes isolated from her family, starting from Richards
death.
Events which contribute to the gradual isolation of Emily from her family
Event Effect on Emily / Evidence to
show
Where possible, what
does it tell you about
Emily?
Richards suicide Shocked that her first son p 13
has committed suicide. It was
the worst shock of my whole life.
Bitter: We know that it affects her
deeply because she hated the
smell of frangipani given by Mr
G.P. Chee at the funeral.
Dazed and disoriented: Talks to
Richard as though he is still alive
and a young boy.
Clearly loves her son a lot.
Even though she may be
seen as a cold, manipulative
person, these evidences do
support that she truly loves
Richard but may not be
aware of how her actions
have caused him to take his
own life.
Kheongs infidelity
and eventually his
death
Infidelity and moving into his mistress
home
1. At a loss
She says that if she grumblesand complains, he is not going to
change his ways. If she keeps
quiet, it means that her husband
will say that she consents to his
infidelity. If she throws a tantrum,
she is just giving him a way to be
justified in his infidelity. P 40
2. Determined (to end his
infidelity)
Puts her foot down by asking
Kheong a lot of questions that he
asks her to shut up p40-41.
3. Became cunning/tactical by
setting up a ploy to entrap
Kheong
Emily organises the annual dinner
1. All this tells us that
Emily is a cunning
woman who would do
anything to save her
marriage or family. It
also tells us that Emily
is an insecure person,
and does not spare a
thought for Kheongs
feelings. Clearly,
Kheong refuses to be
with her yet Emily still
plods on with the
marriage, even
though it is a farce.
She is superficial and
cares too much about
reputation (not so
much physical but
rather, her public
reputation and image
of the Gan family).

to celebrate the end of
Occupation by asking Kheong to
send out invitations. Because it is
such a big public event (it was
even reported in the Singapore
Free Press), Kheong had no
choice but to move back to the
home two days before the
dinner.
2. Refusing to see Emily at his
deathbed
1. Confused: Whats wrong?
Why wont they let me see
him? p43
2. Delusional: I dont
believe he said that. Hemust be ill and out of his
mind. P44
2. Emily has complete lack of
self-awareness of herself.
She has no idea that Kheong
still has ill feelings and
refuses to admit that it is her
which is the cause of his
bitterness. She is delusional
and seems to be living in her
own fantasy (thinking that
she has done everything
well), unable to see reality.
Molly and Mabelmoving out with
their children to
new flats
1. Lonely : Molly and Mabelhave gone to live with their
children in new modern
flats.
Soon, there wont be so
many people in Emerald
Hill, so I have told Doris
that after shes married she
and her husband must
move continue to live herewith me.
This tells us that she isafraid of being alone,
a possible effect of
being abandoned by
her own mother and
living in so many
different relatives
homes before her
marriage.
Event Effect on Emily Where possible, what
does it tell you about
Emily?
Doris visiting an
aunt in America
1. Doris met a boy there, and
Emily feels fearful of losing
her again like she did with
Richard. Here, we see that
This tells us that Emily
has somewhat
mellowed, afraid of
making the same

the effect on Emily when
Doris told her of meeting a
man and not wanting to go
home, is more cautious.
She told Doris that she
does not forbid Doris
from getting married but
begs her to wait before
getting married. She is
feeling scared here, and is
thinking of ways on how to
stall Doris decision. We see
a mellower Emily when she
says Live your own life.
Make your own decisions.
But dont rush into
marriage just because you

somebody else and did not

mistake she did with
Richard. She is more
careful and afraid of
losing anymore family
members.
Charlie and Edward
getting married
and moving to new
flats
When Charlie said, Mum,
actually I dont want to live in
Emerald Hill, Emily said that
and in the end, true enough,
all of them moved away.
When the children moved out
and had their own families,
Emily said Otherwise I dont
go out very much
nowadays
We see the effect it has
on Emily is that she
becomes even more
alone, eventually selling
off most of the land
(partly also because she
was quite short of
money).
