Wakefield couple Jackie and Nick Costley won $100,000 in Saturday night’s Winning Wheel in Auckland after win-ning a spin of the wheel with their Powerball tick-et in August. The prize was initially unclaimed after Jackie threw it in

the bin without check-ing the Winning Wheel numbers, prompting a Wakefield-wide search for the ticket. Lotto and the Wakefield Four Square, where the ticket was pur-chased, traced it back to Jackie through a security camera recording.

Football clubrooms smashed over weekendRichmond Athletic Football Club had the ranchslider of its clubrooms smashed on Saturday night.Police were alerted to the smash, but club president Stu Reid says nothing was taken and they are insured.“From what I understand, it looked like it had been kicked in or something.”Club manager, Debra Waddington, says a neighbour saw the damage on Sunday and alerted police. “There was a bit of a mess to clean up but no one actually got in. The hole was too small for that.”

Richmond man and former Waimea Old Boys player, Ivan Tava, will step in the ring next April for the Fight 4 Victory char-ity boxing event.Ivan went to Richmond School, Waimea College and played senior rugby at Waimea Old Boys. He will take on former Marist player and Victory man James Hemi for the big fight night at Saxton Stadium.Ivan, who is a current Victory School trustee, says he was keen to get involved because he’s seen first-hand the effect the boxing gym has on the children who attend it. “One boy I saw started off [at the gym] as quite a shy boy, now he’s confident and assured. It does great things for the kids so why wouldn’t I sup-

port a programme like that?” The fight is the seventh confirmed bout for the fundraiser, which rais-es money for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. The heavyweight clash will be the first fight for both men, but James, a father of five, says his children are heavily involved in boxing and have been keeping him on his toes at home. “They’ve been giving me a quick shot in the ribs as they walk past me, saying ‘keep your hands up, Dad’. So I’ve been getting some training,” he joked.James says he’s also keen to get one over his Waimea Old Boys oppo-nent. “Come April, it will be whack a Wobba day,” he joked.

Nelson Grey Power president Neville Male is putting his leadership to the ultimate test this month, holding a special general meeting where mem-bers can vote to oust him. Neville has been in the job since 2012, but last week he faced a vote of no confidence from his executive. He decided not to stand down at the time but has instead called a special general meeting where mem-

bers can vote whether to keep him in the job or remove him.Nelson Grey Power has around 9500 members and Neville says he has been trying to modern-ize the organization. Through that process he has upset many of the organisation’s volun-teers, who have lead the charge to remove him.Neville says he is confident that he has the support from the broader membership. “The unethical tactics being used by those who are opposed includ-

ing writing anonymous letters and releasing confidential ma-terial to the media, and public-ly criticizing my leadership can no longer be tolerated. I, there-fore, am now going through the procedure to requisition a special general meeting of the membership to seek a re-en-dorsement of the mandate for change.”The date for the meeting hasn’t been announced yet but Nev-ille says it will likely be held early next year.

News WEDNESDAY 3 December 2014 5

Air pollution in Richmond last winter was the lowest since monitoring started in 2001, indicating that the Tasman District Council is on track to meet new national environmental standards that will be en-forced in 2016 and 2020.A council report released this month showed that the national standard [50 mi-crograms of particles less than 10 microns across per cubic metre of air] was only ex-ceeded twice last winter. That’s a big im-provement on last year, when the standard was exceeded nine times and, considerably lower than in 2003 when it was exceeded 40 times - the maximum 24-hour concen-

tration recorded last winter was 58 mi-crograms which is also the lowest annual maximum on record.Environment and planning manager, Den-nis Bush-King, says the improvement in air quality is pleasing and shows that the steps council is taking to reduce air pollution are working. Although last winter’s unusually warm temperatures and windy conditions contributed to the extra low levels of air pollution, Dennis says the most significant result is that the number of high pollution nights is continuing to trend downwards. And that makes Dennis optimistic that council can meet the new national air

quality standards. The new standards will allow the limit be exceeded only three times a year by 2016 and just once a year by 2020. Dennis says one of the main reasons air quality is improving is that the council has introduced regulations that limit the num-ber and type of solid fuel burners permit-ted in homes in and around Richmond. Solid fuel burners are the main cause of air

pollution in Richmond and they cannot be installed in new homes, while existing burners must be upgraded when a house is sold. “It was an unusually warm July, but the advice I have from our staff is that we should claim some of the success because of the changes we have made around the use of solid fuel burners,” Dennis says. “There have been some ups and downs but the overall trend is going in the right direc-tion, and now that we are at two bad nights we hope we can meet the deadline.”Air pollution in Nelson is also improving with just two bad air nights this year, down from 68 in 2003.

Air quality best since records began

CHRISTMAS DINNER: Tickets are now on sale for the Mayors’ Christ-mas Dinner to be held at the Nelson College Dining Hall, starting at 11am on Christmas Day. The celebrations will start with live enter-tainment, drinks and a sing-along, followed by a delicious traditional Christmas feast. Tickets cost $15 and are available at the Council office in Trafalgar Street, the Stoke Library and Tas-man District Council in Queen Street, Rich-mond, until December 19.

HOSPITAL AFTER EQUIPMENT: Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is asking people to do a pre-Christmas clear-out and bring back loan equipment like toilet frames and shower stools. Nelson Hospital Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy has advised that equipment like bed loops that help people rise from a lying position, and toi-let frames and shower stools are in extremely short supply just now and any returns would be gratefully received. Equipment can be dropped off at the Rehabili-tation Equipment Stores in Nelson on Braemar Campus, Motueka Street.

WATER SHORTAGE: Monday’s rain has not eased the water shortage on the Waimea Plains with stage one water re-strictions, a 20 per cent cut in the allocated take, remaining in place. All water zones within the Waimea Plains, Upper Catchments, Reservoir, Waimea West, Golden Hills, Delta and Upper Confined Aquifer are subject to rationing. Wa-tering restrictions have also been introduced for urban water users in Richmond, Mapua, Ruby Bay, Brightwater, Hope and Wakefield, and their rural extensions. The restrictions mean only handheld hosing is permitted, and on odd and even days corre-sponding with street numbers.

Sam Harrison will be attending the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli in April, after winning a nation-wide competition. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Garin College student, Sam Harri-son, will be travelling to Turkey next April to provide social media cover-age of the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli, after winning a nation-wide competition. In September, Sam, 16, was short-listed for the competition run by the Ministry of Youth Development and New Zealand Defence Force to select three youth ambassadors to attend the World War 100 commemora-tions. The applicants had to run a week-long social media campaign about the ANZAC landings and last month Sam was selected as one of the three winners who will travel to Gal-lipoli to cover the event.Sam created a Facebook page and used Instagram for his social media campaign, which was judged on its creativity and originality and ability to engage the audience. The Face-book page contained posters, video clips and photos about Gallipoli and received 897 likes.“I designed all the posters myself and did all the filming and editing. I prob-ably spent around two or three hours a day creating things for the page and then I had to respond to all the com-ments as well. That was the best part - seeing all the people get engaged with the campaign. I also enjoyed finding

out about my ancestors.” Sam says one of the most viewed vid-eos was entitled the ANZAC Chal-lenge and shows him replicating a soldier’s dash across no-man’s land-ing carrying a rifle and 20kg pack.“I filled my pack up with weights and attached a Gopro to my body and went for it,” Sam says. “It was really hard - it gave me an appreciation of what those soldiers did every day.” Sam says he entered the competition because he has a passion for family history and he wanted to honour his ancestors who fought at Gallipoli. It helped him understand the great sacrifice they made at Gallipoli and “how indebted we are to those who fought all those years ago”. In a video on Sam’s Facebook page he says “most of all I’d like to remember the sacrifices of my forebears”, Eus-tace, Robert and Arthur Turner, Huia Wyatt, Walter Wyatt and Dudley Harrison. Although Sam has attended Anzac Day services around Nelson and Tas-man “for as long as I can remember”, he says “it will be amazing to be part of such an historical occasion” when he joins 10,500 guests, including 2000 New Zealanders and 8000 Aus-tralians, at the commemoration in Gallipoli on April 25.

The newly-formed Tasman Music Trust Band will feature three of the country’s most talent-ed young brass musicians, when it plays a free concert at the Waimea College Hall this Friday.Waimea College’s Liam Golding, Garin’s Lo-gan Ford and Annabella Thomas of Nayland College, have already played for the National Secondary Schools Brass Band of New Zea-land, after it was selected at the end of the third term. Logan, 15, has also been named in the National Youth Brass Band of New Zealand and on Friday the trio will display their talents along with about 30 musicians, aged from 12 to 18, in the Tasman Music Trust Band.Liam will play the tuber with Logan and An-nabella on cornets, in the band that was formed when the Tasman Music Trust was launched earlier this year. It made its debut at the Nelson Mask Parade and will open for the National Youth Brass Band’s concert in Nelson, at the Theatre Royal on January 30 - the trust was formed to raise money to buy instruments for primary school children to hire at affordable rates. Interestingly, Liam, Logan and Annabella were all inspired to switch to brass instruments by Waimea College music teacher, Nick Sharpe, when they were at primary school. Friday’s concert at Waimea College Hall will be held from 7pm to 7.45pm.

Tahunanui School won’t be the same after three of its longest serving teach-ers, with a total of 72 years service at the school and 104 in education, an-nounced their retirements this year.Principal Paul Drummond, of Rich-mond, will leave at the end of term one next year after 38 years in teaching and 16 of those in charge of Tahunanui, while teachers Carol Climo and Sue Curnow leave at the end of this year. Carol has been teaching at Tahunanui for 30 years, after starting in 1975 and taking maternity leave from 1980 to 1990, while Sue has 26 years at Tahu-nanui - Sue has also taught at Nelson Central, Henley, Richmond and Mapua.Paul says he’s decided to leave to “look at new opportunities” and spend more time with his family. He says it is a good time to leave because the school is in “good hands”. “I made a promise to myself that I would leave and try something else, and I couldn’t break that promise. I haven’t got anything lined up yet, but I’ll leave this stage of my career feeling very posi-tive about the contribution I have made to the community I’ve been part of.”Although Carol says she will miss the children and their parents, as well as all the staff at Tahunanui, she is looking forward to spending more time “going fishing” and seeing her six grandchil-dren. Sue is also planning to keep busy with a

“truckload’ of things on her to-do-list, including travelling and seeing more of her six grandchildren who live in Nel-son. She is also a keen genealogist and hopes to find her husband’s long-lost half-sis-ter who was born in Austria, and plans to take up astronomy. However, Sue admits she will also miss the school’s children and families who she says are part of a “great community”. “I’ve really enjoyed teaching at Tahuna and all the schools in Nelson. There’s no such thing as a bad school in Nelson

and all the children here are lovely.” Board of Trustees chair, Lee Corlett, says all three have been a big part of the school and “will be missed”.“Carol is the face of our school and is probably the best new entrant teacher in Nelson, and Sue has been the driv-ing force behind our senior science pro-gramme. And Paul’s vision has seen our school become more successful across the whole range of academic, sporting and cultural achievements.“It’s a sad time but it’s also exciting. We are going into the future for our school.”

The final stage of the design process for the Saxton Velodrome is about to be completed, marking the start of the business end of the $1.6 mil-lion project that is scheduled for completion in 18 months.Representatives of the Saxton Vel-odrome Trust, Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council, met with the velodrome’s design-ers, engineering consultants Opus, in Nelson last Thursday. Once the design has been fine-tuned the con-struction stage of the velodrome can begin, with initial earthworks expected to start in March.Trustee Paul Jennings says Opus has designed velodromes in the North Island and already has a tem-plate for venue at Saxton Field, but the design “just needs fine tuning”. Tasman District Council’s project manager for the velodrome, Glen Thorn, says they are working hard with Opus and their technical team to finalise the design. Glen says

they need to ensure there are “no surprises” during the construction, so that they can hopefully “come in under budget.”Paul says one of the key elements of the design is the training and rec-reational area inside the track.“It’s not going to be an elite velo-drome just for track riders,” he says. “It’s a community facility that will be used by a wider range of groups.”Paul says the project has a tight timeframe, with the earthworks that will form the foundation of the banked 330 metre track starting in March. Then there will be a six-month wait while the earthworks settle and compacts before the sur-face of the track is sealed with as-phalt.However, Paul says the trust will have to get busy fundraising as soon as the design is finalised. It needs to raise about $400,000 as its share of the project, which is also being funded by the two councils.

Design stage for $1.6m velodrome begins

The Moutere Hills Community Fitness Centre is proving to be a popular addi-tion to the eight-year-old community centre, with over 100 members already signed up for the state-of-the-art gym.The fitness centre was constructed after consultation with the community had shown there was a need for a gym at the Tasman District Council-owned facility. It was opened in February this year and centre manager Vanessa Mairs says they have been overwhelmed by the support from the community.“The consultation process showed there was a need for a fitness centre and judg-

ing by the number of members we have already it was exactly right,” Vanessa says. The $100,000 gym is being run on a com-mercial basis with key-holding members. Vanessa says the majority of members have signed-on for personal training programmes, which are run through Contours Gym in Richmond that she su-pervises. “We get a wide cross-section of people coming in, although most of them are from around the district. The biggest group is the over 60s. But we get all ages - the youngest member is 14 and they are restricted to cardio workouts.”

Vanessa says they are receiving excellent feedback from their members who “re-ally like the equipment”. “We invested a lot of time and money in making sure we got the right equip-ment. That was always going to be really important, but we also have to make sure that our clients have a good time here as well - we try really hard to meet all their needs.”In addition to Contours programmes, Vanessa says they run circuit training classes, while members can also “do their own thing”. The gym is open from 4am to 11pm seven days a week.

Grey Power battle:Nelson Grey Power president Nev-ille Male has been subject to the

most vicious smear campaign I have ever seen, for trying to move Nelson Grey Power forward and promote the elderly. The strife is in response to replacing an out-dated, contracted, financially-ori-entated role with a manager, who would attract membership, es-tablish relationships with like or-ganisations, seek sponsorship and advance the society more widely in keeping with what the 2000s require. The committee unani-mously voted for this change, but behind the scenes another agenda was in play to retain the status quo at all costs. Even our loyal volun-

teers were made pawns in this saga. Nev-ille has absorbed some shocking things such as a committee member attempting to override his authority, being falsely ac-cused of unauthorized spending, a major sponsor’s prize presentation held without him knowing, locks changed to deny him and executive members access to records. There are many more serious omissions. It is vital that the members get the facts. A special meeting to support a vote of con-fidence in him and the decisions to move forward is being requisitioned. The members must decide what is right. Please contact me if you wish to sign the special meeting requisition. Errol Millar, Nelson.

Public art:Re your article on spending $100,000 of our money on more

art for Nelson. I would sooner see it spent on loan reduction, and maybe to save an-other rate rise, BUT, if they are hell bent

on spending it on art, then: surely a bronze statue of Lord Nelson would be more ap-propriate. I suggested also, some time ago, that the Trafalgar St bridge could have six bronze statues of the men/women of Nel-son and International fame put along the sides of the bridge, three on each side. This would be a crowd puller especially for tourists, and is part of Nelson’s heritage, surely. We have Lord Rutherford, Caw-thron, Tyree brothers, William and Fred, Wakefields, Cptn Arthur and Col. William, plus the Maori who saved the shipwrecked at Cable Bay, Huria Matenga. This could be similar to the Charles Bridge in Prague. Lord Nelson could replace the Asparagus woman at the end of Trafalgar St which is a waste of ratepayers money. At least the early settlers statue around the Port and Abel Tasman at the beach remind us of our heritage, and are not some way-out, made-up, weird concoction. S.Marris.

Nelson embalmer Lyndsay Pyers, was recently presented with the Top Practi-cal Noel McNee Memorial Award and Top Overall Supreme Student Award on completion of her National Diploma in Embalming.Lyndsay has been in the funeral indus-try for eight years and decided to study embalming at the Wellington Institute of Technology as the next step in her career. Eight students from around New Zealand completed the 15 month course which included embalming the-ory and practice, anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology and chem-istry. “I was very surprised and happy to receive the awards, I was the oldest in the class and it was hard to get used to study but all the hard work was cer-tainly worth it,” Lyndsay says.Lyndsay is now qualified to carry out embalming and restorative procedures on dead human bodies for a wide vari-ety of cases within the funeral service. She became very passionate about the funeral industry when she had a nega-tive experience with a funeral repre-sentative during a family involvement in her early 20’s. “The funeral director came around and had no feeling for the family, I’ve always thought, there has got to be a better way

to do this,” says Lyndsay. She is very proud of her chosen career and openly tells people what she does for a living and says everybody is inter-ested to hear about it. “My job is about preserving the dig-nity of the deceased and providing the family with a pleasant memory picture. For me it is a privilege to be able to help families at an extremely difficult time. You build a relationship with them and

now that I am a qualified embalmer I can be there for them throughout the entire funeral process,” Lyndsay says. Although she gets satisfaction from her work, she adds the hardest part of the job is working with children and young people. “In my profession, you only have one shot and it has got to be perfect, there is no dress rehearsal, for me it is not just a job, it is an absolute passion,” Lyndsay says.

Organically grown produce is gaining popularity as people look for a more sustainable and healthy approach to life, and Agribusiness Training is of-fering enthusiastic gardeners the opportunity to take part in their upcoming organics based course. Beginning on February 18, the 10 month course takes place fortnightly on a Wednesday from 6pm – 9pm and looks at a number of im-portant elements for organic gardening, includ-ing plant botany, organic principals, soils and fertilisers and identifying and controlling weeds and pests. At the end of the course, students will have gained an industry recognised, National Certificate in Horticulture, making it a great course for those looking to join the industry, as well as gardeners with a desire to improve their

skills and knowledge. Local tutor Kirsty Tough will be taking the lessons which are based at Sax-ton Stadium. To grab a spot call the Agribusiness office on 0508 247 428 ext 4 to receive an infor-mation pack.

Dancers of all ages and talents took the stage for the annual Glenna Armstrong School of Tap end-of-year show, titled A Celebration of Tap Dance, at the Richmond Town Hall on Saturday. The two performances got off to an in-triguing start when six parents joined Glenna for the opening act. Then it was the turn of the 24 students, aged eight to 15, and one of the school’s former stars, Ezra Bush, to perform. “The parents were really nervous - it was a big occasion for them,” Glenna says. “It was the first time most of them had performed on stage or at least their first time since school so they did very well.”Glenna says Ezra, 24, has been danc-ing professionally in Australia and is returning to Nelson to teach dance in schools. About 210 people attended the two shows.

The annual Ulysses Toy Run is expect-ing a big turn-out this year – as long as the weather holds off.Wet conditions were blamed for the small turnout last year, as the event tra-ditionally attracts hundreds of motor-cyclists from Nelson, Blenheim, West Coast and even Canterbury. The 29 edition of the run will be this Saturday, December 13. The toy run sees riders and their pillions decorate themselves and their machines to enter into the spirit of this time of the year. The Toy Run features motorbikes and

scooters of various engine sizes, all adorned with various gifts for distribu-tion to the region’s children by the local branch of the Salvation Army.Nelsons Ulysses Branch Coordinator John Macdonald, says the run is a fa-vourite ride for Ulyssians across the top of the south. “The aim is to give gifts to the needy, and the Salvation Army fol-lows our convoy to collect toys from people on the roadside. There is always a huge turn-out of bikes and spectators alike, who line the streets to watch and support the appeal. It really brings out a

wonderful community spirit,” says John. The public can come to the assembly point in Richmond to donate their gifts to the Salvation Army and to see the ex-tensive range of scooters and motorcy-cles dressed for the occasion.Riders will assemble at the Papps Car Park in Cambridge St, at 10am, with the convoy leaving an hour later. The mo-torcycles will make their way into Nel-son, through Richmond’s town centre and Stoke, before travelling down Tra-falgar St to finish at the car park of the Trafalgar Centre.

Business Update. Adv.

The team at Rowan Dron Electrical are passion-ate about harnessing energy from the sun and using it to power households. They have com-pleted numerous solar installations throughout the region and their customers now enjoy dra-matically reduced power bills. With a PV Solar System, PV solar panels con-vert sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity, which is then passed through an inverter creating viable AC electricity. This AC elec-tricity is used to power the household, while any excess electricity you generate can then be sold back to the elec-tricity companies. Because they use light from the sun (and not heat) they will con-tinue to generate electricity even in light cloud. The cost of PV solar panels has fallen dramati-cally in the last few years while, at the same time, electricity costs just keep on rising. A typical 2kW system can now give you a 6.9% return on investment! That is more than your bank will pay and it means that your system will definitely pay for itself. The bigger the sys-tem, the bigger the return. The cost of installing a PV Solar System will vary depending on the number of panels you need and the complexity of the installation. An average family home will need a 2kW system which, fully-installed with panels and inverter,

costs around $8,000, excl gst. How long it takes for a system to pay for itself varies depending on the size, but an average system takes around 6-8 years to pay for itself completely. While it is possible to sell electricity back to the grid, not all power companies will pay you for your excess electricity and the prices they offer can

vary. Rowan Dron Electrical can explain how to get the best price for your surplus generation. Their entire team are quali-fied solar installers, as well as being Certified Electri-cians with additional man-ufacturers training. They use the best quality gear, all manufactured in New Zea-land and Europe, and their

PV panels carry a 25 year production warranty, while your inverter is warranted for between 5 and 10 years.Rowan Dron Electrical are happy to provide a no-obligation, free, onsite assessment. Once they are confident that a PV system will work for you, they will put together a free quota-tion based on the correct system for your site and your power needs. Because they are elec-tricians, they can advise you on ways you can maximise the savings from your system. Con-tact them for more information or to arrange your free household PV assessment.

Today as I write this article, on the fourth Thursday of No-vember, America is celebrating ‘Thanksgiving Day’ which is one of the most celebrated days in their calendar, and it prompt-ed me to express my thoughts about the benefits of a national day of thanksgiving and even of greater value, living a lifestyle of every day and in everything giv-ing thanks. Thank and think both come from the same Anglo-Saxon root word, which is very inter-esting because it reminds us to always have an attitude of grati-tude, to show appreciation, to count our blessings and ‘think thankful’!Some of the most inspiring peo-ple are those who have suffered

pain or hardship and yet they have never become bitter or un-grateful and have even been able to give thanks for their handicap or hardship. Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf for most of her life, said: “I thank God for my handicaps, for through them I have found myself, my work and my God.” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the in-ternationally acclaimed Soviet author and Nobel Prize winner who spent years in a Siberian prison, said: “Bless you prison, bless you for being in my life. For there, lying upon the rotting prison straw, I came to realize that the object of life is not pros-perity as we are made to believe, but the maturity of the soul.” A close friend who went through a long battle with cancer said that the illness had been a jour-ney that had brought him closer

to God, to his family and some of the best years of his marriage. One of the keys was that he nev-er lost his sense of humour. One day he told his family he had invested in some real estate, but didn’t tell them it was a plot in the local cemetery! No matter what your spiritual or religious beliefs, being thankful can mean the difference between living in misery or joy, and it is, in fact a medically proven path to achieving greater health and happiness. The Apostle Paul, who suffered more than most, having been beaten with rods, stoned, ship-wrecked, falsely imprisoned and faced many dangers, taught the importance of thanksgiving. “Always and in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” I Thess. 5: 18Now that is more than a good thought, that is a ‘God-thought’!

Just a thought...

This image is believed to be of Godfrey John Hammond, as he was the only man listed on the Cenotaph Data-base under the name ‘Hammond,’ who was a sergeant in the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. It matches closely images held by the Harkness fam-ily. The man depicted in the negative can be identified as a ser-geant and a member of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion from the badges and shoulder flashes he is wearing. Hammond was born on 30 June, 1889, in Appleby. On the Cenotaph data-base his next of kin is listed as Alexander G. Hammond (father), Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand. Before World War One, Hammond was working as a farmer for his father in Rich-mond, Nelson. He

joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion during World War One and embarked on 16 October, 1914, from Wellington for Egypt.

He was invalided back to New Zealand on 25 September, 1915, and finally discharged on 18 February, 1916. Hammond died on 13 November, 1934.

Gail Collingwood stepped down after 18 years as a Nelson City councillor last year ,but says there is no such word as “retire” with plenty of things out in the community to do.When Alzheimers Nelson phoned to see whether she would be interested in becom-ing their new patron, she ac-cepted, as it was a subject close to her heart.Gail has experienced dementia within her own family, most recently with her sister, who is in her 80s, diagnosed with de-mentia. Her grandmother was also diagnosed in the 1950s when there were no care facilities available and patients were put into psychiatric care. She remembers as a young child visiting her grandmoth-er at Sunnyside Hospital in Christchurch and the stigma that was associated with it back then. She says there is still a stigma attached to people with de-mentia and mental illness to-day, with some people from the older generation believing they will be institutionalized.

“The reality is, it’s not like that at all now, I would like to hope that I am able to talk to people about the changes in support, and encourage others to be more acceptable and change their perception of people di-agnosed with dementia. The more that people are open and transparent about these types of illnesses, the more it will be-come the norm,” Gail says.Alzheimers Nelson supports over 450 people diagnosed with dementia and over 500 carers, within the Nelson-Tas-man region. Heather Lackner, Alzheimers Nelson manager, says that care is provided in the home and there are different ways of

working to support families. “The issue is around diagnosis. A 2012 report states that only 60 per cent of cases are diag-nosed, this means, potentially, there are a further 40 per cent of people living with dementia in New Zealand that have not yet been diagnosed. Feedback from the people that have used our Nelson service is that the education and information they have received, along with the support and friendship, is what has got them through the journey,” Heather says. For further information on Alzheimers Nelson visit their website at www.alzheimers.org.nz/nelson or phone 546 7702.

Waimea College will need to “think out-side the box” as well as trek, run and kayak at high speed, to be competitive in the Get-2Go final at the Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre on Great Barrier Island, starting on Monday.Waimea has established an impressive re-cord in the last four Get2Go finals record-ing a second in 2011 and third in 2012, before finishing fourth last year. The event, for year 9 and 10 students, is a cross be-tween the Amazing Race and adventure

racing and includes rock climbing, ori-enteering, kayaking, trekking and group problem-solving.Although Waimea’s eight-person team has been training hard for the five-day event, team member Jaimie Prestidge says their mental agility will be just as important as their physical fitness and outdoor skills.“The kayaking and rafting will be hard and the multi-sport race on the last day is tough, but it’s the group challenges that are really difficult,” Jaimie says. “It’s critical that we work together as a team and think outside the square to solve the problems.”

The teams will complete group initiatives and problem-solving on the first two days of the event before setting out on a two-day, 60 kilometre expedition on days three and four. On the final day, the teams will complete a multisport race featuring trek-king and kayaking. Team coach and teacher, Jane Orbell, says the team has improved considerably since winning the regional finals in September and is ready to make the big step-up to the finals. The students have spent countless hours running around the Richmond Hills and practising their rope and water skills.

“The raft-making and water skills are very important, so they have been learning to sail with the Nelson Yacht Club and do thing like kayak backwards and standing up,” Jane says. “They have also got a lot fit-ter, but the big thing will be working as a team and thinking laterally in the group initiatives - if they don’t do that they will spend the rest of the week trying to catch-up.”The Waimea College team is: Brooke Rob-ertson, Maggie McLean, Jaimie Prestidge, Mikayla Lowrey, Harry Talbot, Cameron Jones, Mac Karalus and Theo Smith.

The Anderson family from Richmond says it is easy keep-ing in touch, all you have to do is play touch. All three sons have been cho-sen to represent Nelson Bays at the Junior South Island Inter-provincial Touch Series which will be held in Christchurch later this month. Henry, 13, is in the under 15 boys team and both Simon, 15, and Ben, 16, are in the under 17 boys team. The boys’ father Wayne, a for-mer New Zealand touch player, is coach of the Nelson Bays un-der 17 side and mum, Megan, a former Canterbury representa-

tive player, will be assisting the team as manager.Eldest son Ben is following in his father’s footsteps and has recently been selected to repre-sent New Zealand in the men’s under 21 touch team. At only 16, he will play three games against Australia in Sydney, January 2015. Touch has always been a part of family life for the Ander-sons, with the boys having watched their parents play and being involved in family teams

when younger.“We’ve learnt heaps off dad, and mum has always been there to support us and is our taxi,” says Ben.“It is good having dad as a coach because we can always talk about the game over din-ner and go out in the backyard and run a few plays.”The family will be on the road together again when Ben and Simon play for the Nelson Col-lege senior touch team, under the guidance of Wayne as the team’s coach, at the Second-ary Schools Touch Nationals, which are to be held in Auck-land later this month.

It’s the gift that keeps on giving and Begg’s Music-works is fully stocked with musical instruments, and ready for a big Christmas rush.Instruments are always a popular Christmas gift and Begg’s owner Tim Babbage has just released his Christmas specials which have everything from drum kits to guitars and ukuleles to keyboards and pianos. “Musical instruments are a fantastic Christmas pre-sent,” says Tim. “They do say music is the gift that lasts a lifetime.”Begg’s Christmas cata-logue has everything from a $30 ukulele to a $100 guitar and an $800 drum kit, and Tim says his ex-pert staff are on hand to help parents pick the best instrument for their child.“We’ll give them the low-down and tell them the fact from the fiction and what to look for in a good quality instrument. A good quality instrument doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, but there are some really poorly-made instruments out there. It’s just a matter of getting what will work best for their situation.”Among the bargains this year, Tim says a Tama

drum kit for just $800 is one of the highlights. “Tama is the best drum brand in the world and we have one for $800, that’s ridiculously cheap. This company also makes drum kits for $10,000, so they know their stuff.”

Begg’s has over 100 different guitars in stock, ranging from $90 to $4000 and all the deals can be found in the Begg’s catalogue which can be picked up from Begg’s Musicworks on Hardy St.

Run Mahana is more than a running race, it’s a “gala with sweat”.Co-organiser Greg Dykzeul coined the phrase after another hugely successful Run Mahana at Woollaston Estate, with 700 people lining up for either the half marathon, 10 kilometre or five kilometre run or walk, and the Mahana Mile for the kids.“We wanted to create a festival atmosphere so there was something for everyone, an event that families could do together,” says Greg.

“By having the food and drink vendors it makes it more like a festival. People can have some-thing to eat or drink after the event and just re-lax. It’s like a gala, a gala with sweat.”On the course, Commonwealth Games repre-sentative Julian Matthews was pipped in the 10km race by Hayden McLaren.Hayden set an impressive new course record with a time of 32.03. Paula Canning won the women’s 10km race with a time of 39.32.Full results at nelsonevents.co.nz

GreypowerNelson Grey Power Inc

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING Sunday 21 December at 2pm

Nelson Suburban Club, Tahunanui Drive

Linda O’DeaActing SecretaryNelson Grey Power Association (Inc)

Business of the Meeting:

1/ To remove Neville Male from his position of Association President, the committee having lost confidence in him as President.

Reason: To action and confirm the 2 Votes of No Confidence in the President Neville Male as received by the management committee, as we believe this to be in the best Interests of the Association.

Constitution Rule 10.5 states “The management committee may, by a motion decided by 2/3rds majority of the votes, terminate a person’s position as a Management Committee member, if it believes that such action is in the best interests of the Society.

You will have all read much adverse publicity in the local media over the past 2 months most of which has been part of an orchestrated campaign to stop the progress that is being made by me and the Management Committee, to bring the organisation into a more modern era. I was given the mandate to do this when elected President in October 2012.

This publicity has suggested that there is wide spread opposition within the membership to what the Committee and myself are trying to achieve in making Nelson Grey Power a highly respected and valuable community organisation. To put it on the record out of a membership of over 9000 ONLY 17 PERSONS have publicly voiced opposition to what we are trying to do. Many more have contacted me to state their strong support for the change.

It is my opinion that unethical tactics are being used by those who are opposed including writing anonymous letters and releasing confidential material to the media and publicly criticizing my leadership can no longer be tolerated. I therefore am now going through the procedure to requisition a SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING of the membership to seek a re-endorsement of the mandate for change. The date for this meeting will be notified to you in due course. It will be very important for a many members as possible to attend that meeting.

Neville Male President, Nelson Grey Power Assn.

Trends can project manage your entire project. We’ll organise

the complete refurbishment, dealing with all of the plumbers,

electricians, gib stoppers and painters. And we’ll do it at a

known fixed cost... so you can just sit back and let it all happen.
