For Immediate Release 25 January 2012 FREUD’S REDISCOVERED DRAWING BRITISH POST-WAR HIGHLIGHTS  AT AUCTION AT CHRISTIE’S LONDON THIS FEBRUARY  POST-WAR & CONTEMPOR ARY ART EVENING AUCTION Christie’s London, King Street 14 February 2012 at 7pm Francis Outred, Christie's Head of Post-War & Contemporary Art, Europe :  '2012, the year of the Olympics, is a big year for major British artists in London, with David Hockney at the Royal Academy, Lucian Freud opening at the  National Portrait Gallery in February and Damien Hirst at the Tate through the summer. We are delighted to be further celebrating this in our February auctions. Alongside the outstanding Bacon of Henrietta Moraes, we are presenting an exquisite canvas from a key period by Freud and two drawings which span his career, an incredible discovery from 1948 which fills in some  previously missing biographical detail and a stunning study of Bruce Bernard from 1985. Also in the auction is a very unusual study of Henry Geldzahler, Hockney's great friend and champion, from the same period  . Boat, Connemara is a meticulous and emotional drawing executed in 1948 by Lucian Freud, while the young artist was on holiday in the Irish countryside (estimate: £200,000-300,000; illustrated above). Rediscovered recently, the drawing was originally purchased directly from the artist’s studio by accomplished architect, collector and patron W. G. Howell. The present work is a significant piece in the late artist’s oeuvre, showcasing his fine draughtsman-ship skills with just a pen and tempera, and reflecting his style of the late 1940s before the focus of his work switched to oil portraiture. Freud travelled to Ireland for three weeks in August 1948 and produced only two works during his stay on the Irish coast, one of which is Boat, Connemara,  where he sketched his picturesque surroundings and the lonely vision of this large vessel resting upon the empty shore.  The young artist employed a masterly technique of calligraphic patterns, hatching and cross-hatching, reminiscent of old masters’ etchings, with just a hint of colour which contributes to highlight the main subject of his attention. Fresh to the market and unseen for 50 years, this exceptional rediscovery will a ttract the interest of discerning collectors.

Christie's is also pleased to present several other important works by LucianFreud this February. Each coming from a different private collection, they span Freud’s oeuvre.

Executed in 1985, Head of Bruce Bernard  is a masterful drawing by  LucianFreud capturing one of the key figures in his life: the journalist, author andphotographer Bruce Bernard. It is an affectionate portrait that prefigures twoof Freud’s major paintings including  Bruce Bernard  (1992) and Bruce Bernard  (Seated) (1996) and records the emotional rapport that existed between theartist and his friend(estimate: £120,000-180,000; illustrated top right).

Painted between 1983-1984, Small Figure  is an exquisitely rendered portrait of a woman, dating from a pivotal moment inthe artist’s career (estimate: £1.5-2 million; illustrated centreleft). It was during this period in the early 1980s that Freudcarried out some of his greatest works, culminating in his widely acknowledged masterpiece Large Interior W11 (After Watteau) (1981-1983). Small Figure  is perhaps best understood as acounterpoint to this large- scale depiction of close family and

friends. In these contemporary works, Freud perfected hismarriage of impasto and observation, translating the expressionand almost tangible physicality of his sitters to canvas.

Executed circa  1960,  Annie  is one of  Freud’s earliest paintings of one of hischildren (estimate: £300,000-500,000; illustrated right). It depicts his eldest child

Annie by his first wife Kitty Garman, daughter of sculptor Jacob Epstein. In thepainting, Annie who is now an award-winning poet appears as a youthful, teenage

Agrigente (illustrated left) is an extraordinary

abstract landscape which forms part of the

renowned series of „Agrigente‟ paintings by Nicolas

de Staël, regarded as the most important everproduced by the Russian-born artist. This

particular work, which was realised in Provence in

August 1953, on his return from a visit to

Agrigento, Sicily, is one of the largest paintings

from the series and is indeed a masterwork. The

thick impasto is applied with a palette knife in atechnique honed down by the artist, fully

emphasising the large juxtaposed strips of vivid

colour. De Staël unusually signed, titled and dated the piece on its reverse, revealing its particular

importance. This work is estimated to realise £3.5 million to £5 million, in line with the current record price

for the artist at auction (€7,033,418 / US$9,423,121).

Darren Leak, Head of the Sale: ‘’A Way of Thinking’ is a distinctive private collection which show s an out of the

ordinary eye for contemporary art. Throughout the years its owner selected a number of great pieces by artists

such as Gonzalez-Torres and Jeff Wall, Richter and Struth. It is interesting to note that the majority of the works

we are offering for sale at Christie's London on 15 February were purchased when their creators were still part

of the  ‘ avant-garde ’  and not yet the superstars they have now become, demonstrating the very strong and

discerning eye of the collectors ’.

Perfectly exemplifying the vision which inspired ‘A Way

of Thinking’, is “Untitled” (Ross in L.A.) , an early

and iconic installation work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres (illustrated right). Executed in 1991 it

was acquired by the current owner in the same

year. Constituting a hieratic stack of paper

printed with a single silvered square, it was

conceived as a perennially renewable and ever-changing totem. As the title suggests, it stands as a tribute to

the artist’s long-term love Ross Laycock, who died prematurely in 1991 from AIDS. Gonzalez-Torres first began

his stacked paper installations in 1989, recalling the industrially manufactured objects and serialised sculptures

carried out by Minimalists such as Donald Judd. With its elementary geometry, the stack simultaneously invites

and deters the audience from defiling its clean, structured aesthetic (estimate: £300,000-400,000).

Another major highlight from this collection is The Jewish Cemetery , an important work executed by Jeff Wall in

1985 and acquired in 1989 (estimate: £300 000 500 000; illustrated on the previous page top) Considered to
