What a jam-packed second quarter this has been!

On top of running two parenting workshops, our Chairman has also been making regular guest appearances on radio stations to educate parents and provide advice on effective parenting methods.

For youths, CampusImpact ran a family-bonding workshop, Coding with Your Kid, in partnership with Cognizant, during which two exceptional young people caught our eye. Look out for their story and how the coding workshop brought out the confidence and curiosity of our students.

We have also been mentoring students from Nan Chiau High School, Hwa Chong Institution and Anderson Junior College under the Citibank-YMCA Youth for Causes Project, and it is such a joy to see the passion and creativity of these young people who are championing the cause of less-privileged youths.

But what has made our work most meaningful is helping the young people from families which have been struck by challenging circumstances. In just the last few months, two families approached CampusImpact for help after their breadwinners suffered strokes. We immediately lent them a helping hand, so that the students would still have access to a conducive environment and receive academic and moral support from our volunteer tutors during this tough time.

Helping youths to brave through the challenges of growing up has always been our purpose. Thank you for being our partner in this meaningful work of preparing the next generation.

If you know of any youths or parents who need help, or if you would like to help them in any way, please feel free to contact us.

Cheng Yi radiates positivity, joy and excitement to learn. It is no wonder he is one of the top scorers that CampusImpact has

produced in 2017. In April, Cheng Yi started pursuing his diploma in Media and Production Design, offered by Republic Polytechnic. He entered the course under Direct School Admission, with a O level score of 14 points. In our “Just Little Stories”, Cheng Yi shares about his three-year journey with CampusImpact, and how he gained the qualities for success under the guidance of his tutors.

“The small tuition classes allowed me the chance of having better concentration in my studies. I found the environment to be beneficial for those who need a quiet environment in order to study. CampusImpact is also full of helpful teachers who helped me by providing supportive feedback and recommendations on study methods and they also helped me by guiding me through the difficulties I had in my work. Teachers such as Mr Shu Hearn, Mr Raymond Koh, Mr Solomon, Mr Welson and many others are dedicated to help all youths to reach their potential and they have always given me the encouragement to work harder for my exams, and eventually this helped me to do well in my national exams.

The staff in CampusImpact are really friendly too, and they also allowed me to borrow books in the centre to study and read while I waited for my classes to start or when I came over to do some self-revision in the classrooms.”

IS YOUR

CHILD HAPPY ?In our fast-paced urban life, we face pressures from work, from our competitive society and our high costs of living. These often cause us to vent our frustrations on our children, causing them to get caught up in this negativity. This will affect their studies and development.

Most parents believe that good grades and good careers bring happiness. Yet, it is actually happiness that helps our children achieve success. As parents, our job is to ensure an ideal atmosphere at home to help our children experience happiness in a positive and healthy environment.

Consider the following suggestions:

1. Loving parents give children a sense of security and happiness

2. Playing together outdoors not only helps children relieve stress, it also provides children with new opportunities to learn and exercise creativity 3. Studies have shown that eating together and communicating as a family help children become emotionally stable, optimistic and positive

4. Seek to understand and ask probing questions to guide your child’s development

These are simple steps we can take to help our children experience the simple pleasures of life.

Madam Anisuzan, 40, used to worry for her son’s future. The first thing he would do after coming home from school was to lie down and sleep. He was unmotivated to go to school, because he did not like writing

and taking exams, and, consequently, did not do well academically.

But on March 24, Madam Anisuzan was pleasantly surprised to realise that her son, 14-year-old Muhammad Syazwan, was the best student in the Coding With Your Kid workshop, as he finished each of the tasks way ahead of the other participants.

Beaming with pride, Madam Anisuzan said: “I saw a new side to my son today.”

He had breezed through the various tasks, displaying creativity, flexibility, and clarity in thinking as he exercised his problem-solving skills. Syazwan, who is a Secondary Two student in the Normal Academic Stream in Yishun Secondary School, said: “My trainer made me feel important to him. I enjoyed bonding with my trainer and interacting with him. Maybe I will try a career in coding. Or, maybe one day, I will become an inventor.”

Together with Syazwan’s family, there were eight other families participating in the two-hour workshop, during which participants learned to code with Microbits. Trainers were attached to each family, so that every participant would have the attention and support they needed.

Another participant in the workshop, Chua Hui Qin, 16, a Secondary Four Express Stream student, signed up for the workshop because she was reading a book about someone who had hacked into a system, and was curious to see what coding was all about. Her mother, Ms Monica Loh, 45, said: “I was glad to see how she has grown up. I used to think I need to spoon-feed her, cook for her, and do household chores for her, but from this workshop, I have seen how independent she is.

“Although we already spend time regularly having meals together as a family, the workshop gave me the chance to enter my daughter’s world, as she taught me things I didn’t know.”

Youth for CausesCTITI-YMCA

If I must use two words to describe my Youth For Causes (YFC) journey with CampusImpact, they would be “unforgettable” and “irreplaceable”! Although I have served in other volunteerism programmes, I’d never been part of one that allowed me to learn and love, both at the same time. I wouldn’t deny that I had doubts as to why I had even embarked on the YFC programme because I was already drowning in the academic rigour of school work. Nevertheless, these doubts were cleared a few weeks into this service learning programme.

Learn: Initially, I joined YFC in hopes that I would be able to make an indelible imprint on others. I have, however, since come to realise that the person who went through the transformative process was none other than myself. During one of the workshops, I was slapped hard with the challenge of having to mitigate a conflict between two children.

The negative feeling of the conflict spread to other children, which made continuing the workshop hard as there was obvious tension in the air. I was

at my wit’s end as neither I nor my team mates had prior experience in working with children. Fortunately, things got better as we managed to placate the children by talking to them individually. This challenge taught me that sometimes life needs to kick us to the ground before we can learn how to stand up even stronger. Through this journey, I have learnt so much more than just how to raise funds for the VWO, I also picked up soft skills like conflict management, leadership and teamwork and hard skills like writing and pitching proposals.

Love: Another lesson I have kept dear to me is a simple one, yet I often experience difficulty putting it into practice. Through the children at CampusImpact, I was reminded of our innate ability to love one another without inhibition when Yi Jie’s asked: “Will you come again?”. He loved us and let us into his heart so quickly, so freely. I also learnt that love is an accumulation of the smallest actions of giving: Isaac helping us with the glue guns when we were having trouble, Yu Jing sacrificing her toy for a girl who wanted a cuter one, and so many other memories which I will never forget. Their ready acceptance towards me made me feel at ease and so empowered to spread love to others.

Of course, the lessons come with a price. Serving as a volunteer is tiring, time-consuming, and stressful. This YFC journey has taught me that working with children is more than just fun and games. But, at the end of the day, the

You are experiencing stress because your child has passed on his/her stress to you.

1. Deal with your own stress first

Did you know that stress is “contagious”? Try to relax first, or you may end up passing on even more stress to your child.

2. Discover the source of your child’s stress

Is your child stressed out because of the amount of homework, because he/she cannot understand what the teacher is saying during class, cannot focus, or because he/she does not know how to do homework?

Or is the stress coming from a poor relationship with classmates, or because he/she does not have friends in school?

3. Seek solutions

Understanding the problem helps you effectively help your child.

Looking at the situation through your child’s eyes will make it easier for him/her to accept your suggestions and solutions.
