Executive!Summary!
!
The!first!MATCH!seminar!for!Sector!Technical!Groups!(STGs)!was!held!on!15!February!2017!in!Leuven,!Belgium,!where!around!50!experts!exchanged!knowledge!and!networking! took!place.!Speakers! from! the!European!Commission,! industry,! European! technology! platforms,! research!centers!and!universities!presented!modern!or!advanced!materials,!which!are!particularly!important!in! the! future! technologies! for! industries! such! as! energy,! transport,! health,! construction! and!infrastructure!and!creative!industries.!The!presentations!underlined!the!variety!of!materials!such!as!e.g.!composites!in!the!form!of!films,!layers,!fibers,!their!combinations!with!communication!and!sensor!technology,!and!their!impact!on!the!latest!innovations!in!energy,!transport!and!healthcare.!The!impact!of!materials!on!the!creation!of!new!technologies!and!products!and!the!creation!of!new!jobs!was!especially!highlighted.!Future!technologies!will!react!even!more!to!societal!challenges!if!fossil!energies!are!to!become!scarcer,!demands!for!environmental!protection!are!increasing!and!the!health!sector!needs!better!solutions!for!an!older!population.!Materials!and!their!technologies!become!more!complex!and!the!need!for!significant!savings!in!critical!materials!through!new!design!techniques!and!novel!processing!technologies!that!take!account!of!recycling!and!reuse!has!been!an!important!aspect!of!future!research!and!development.!!
!
It!is!time!to!make!material!research!and!development!fit!for!future!product!innovations!"made!in!Europe".! It! requires! a! holistic! approach! that! encompasses! the! entire! value! chain.! The!Sector!Technical!Groups!support!this!basic!objective!in!order!to!create!a!reliable!framework!for!the!core!areas! of! material! research! and! development! in! Europe! and! to! avoid! "silo! thinking"! and!fragmentation.!37!committed!professionals!with!many!years!of!business!and!academic!experience!and!proven!success!stories!have!decided!to!get!involved!in!one!or!more!of!the!five!STGs.!A!next!meeting!is!scheduled!for!early!June!2017.!

The!aim!of!MATCH!to!exchange!knowledge!with!the!STGs,!to!meet!new!challenges!and!to!make!proposals!regarding!new!research!programs!is!described!in!the!different!chapters.!The!lectures!(pages!11^21),!the!discussion!(pages!21^23)!and!the!results!of!the!survey!(pages!33!^!45)!led!to!some!ideas!for! the!topics!of! the!next!FP9!program!(pages!25!and!26)!and!on!the!next!actions!(page!45!and!46).!! !

MatVal,!an!FP7!coordination!and!support!action,!started!in!2012!and!was!initiated!by!A4M.!The!project!targets!materials!innovation!implementation!through!value!chain!collaboration!and!sharing!ideas/visions!from!the!European!materials!community.!
MATCH!–!Materials!for!a!Common!House!MATCH!is!a!coordination!and!support!action!(H2020)!to!promote!the!creation!of!strong,!sustainable,!inclusive!network!where!any!European!Materials!players!such!as!Industry,!Research!and!Academia!feels!comfortable!and!gains!real!value!for!its!interest,!and! the! integration!of!concerted!and!strategic!actions!responding! to! regional,!national!and!European!challenges!in!the!Materials!field.!It!was!initiated!by!A4M.!
A4M!–!Alliance! for!Materials! is! is!a!network!of!European!Technology!Platforms! like!EuMaT,!Suschem,! Manufuture,! Textile! ETP,! ESTEP,! SMR! (sustainable! resources),! the! European!Materials!Research!Society!(E^MRS)!and!the!Federation!of!European!Materials!Societies!(FEMS),!and!Energy!Materials!Industry!Research!Initiative!(EMIRI).!
STG! –! Sector! Technical! Groups,! Expert! groups! containing! people! from! industry,! ETPs,!Research!Organisations,!Universities!and!if!possible!from!NGOs!and!retail!companies.!
ETP!H!European!Technology!Platform!
•! EuMaT!–!European!Technology!Platform!for!Advanced!Engineering!Materials!and!Technologies!has!been!launched!in!order!to!assure!optimal!involvement!of!industry!and!other!important!stakeholders!in!the!process!of!establishing!of!R&D!priorities!in!the!area!of!advanced!engineering!materials!and!technologies.!EuMaT!should!improve!coherence!in!existing!and!forthcoming!EU!projects,!in!the!field!of!materials!R&D.!It!covers!all!elements!of!the!life!cycle!of!an!industrial!product,!despite!it!is!a!component,!a!system!or!a!final!goods.!
•! ESTEP! U! The! European! Steel! Technology! Platform,! brings! together! all! the! major!stakeholders! in! the! European! steel! industry.! Our! membership! includes! major! steel!manufacturersi!universities!and!research!institutions!active!in!steel!researchi!major!users!of!steel!such!as!car!manufacturersi!and!public!bodies!like!the!European!Commission!and!national!governments!

The!project!MATCH!which!is!funded!under!Grant!agreement!no:!646031!and!its!action!full!title:!"The!Alliance!for!Materials!way!to!the!creation!of!the!MATerials!Common!House!^!MATCH"!!was!launched!by!a!qualified!and!assorted!representative!group!of!the!European!Materials!community,!which!intends!to!further!boost!and!reinforce!a!concept!launched!by!Alliance!for!Materials!(A4M):!the!creation!of!a!strong,!sustainable,! inclusive!network!where!any!European!Materials!players!(from!Industry,!Research,!University)!could!feel!comfortable!and!can!gain!real!value!for!her/his!own!interest!and!expectations!as!far!as!Materials!R&D&I!is!concerned.!This!partnership!promotes!the!integration!of!concerted!and!strategic!challenges!of!national,!regional!and!European!needs!in!the! field! to! achieve! sustainable! development! and! innovation! actions,! as! anticipated! by! future!challenges!to:!

Work!package!2!task!2.1!
The! work! package! 2! (WP2)! relates! to! one! of! the! important! activities! to! reach! the! goal! of!“Networking! of! European! and! national! activities! on! Materials”! and! the! partners! have! already!prepared! a! guideline! document! in! Task! 2.1! to! “consolidate! the! industrial! sector! oriented!A4M!groups”.!(Task!leader:!KMM^VIN).!The!next!step!to!establish,!launch!and!animate!the!“A4M!Sector!Technical!Groups”2!(STG),!in!certain!industrial!sectors!with!a!minimum!of!five!areas!like!Energy,!Transport,!Infrastructure/Construction,!Health!and!Creative!Industry!was!made!by!organising!the!MATCH! At!the!end!of!the!seminar!about!75%!of!the!participants!agreed!to!join!the!STGs!and!to!support!them!with!their!expertise!in!the!industrial!sectors!which!were!discussed.!!

Work!package!2!task!2.2!
In!the!meantime,!also!Task!2.2!“Definition!of!a!sustainable!model!for!the!creation!of!a!long!lasting!organisation! implementing! the!A4M!common!house!concepts”!was!discussed.!With! the!aim!of!maintaining!the!Materials!Common!House!actively!well!beyond!the!project!lifetime,!partners!FEMS!and! A4M! (especially! with! APRE,! KMM^VIN,! EURATEX! and! E^MRS)! were! looking! of! ways! of!assuring!the!Materials!Common!House!aspects!after!the!end!of!the!MATCH!project.!!
At!the!request!of!M.!Hofmann!(FEMS)!and!M.!Basista!(KMM^VIN),!an!A4M!stakeholder!meeting!was!organised!on!December!21,!2016!in!Brussels!by!APRE!to!discuss!possible!ways!to!assure!the!future!existence!of!the!A4M!Materials!Common!House.!It!was!decided!to!leave!A4M!as!an!open! network! of! organisations! related! to! materials! R&D&I! like! FEMS! and! E^MRS! as!representative! of! the! materials! science,! research! &! engineering! community,! the! European!Technology!Platforms!and!EMIRI!as!representatives!of!the!industry!dealing!with!specific!materials!or!active!in!specific!industrial!sectors.!The!members!of!A4M!agreed!that!a!materials!network!as!the! “A4M! Materials! Common! House”! is! necessary! for! the! exchange! of! information,! for! a!harmonized!communication!with!the!European!Commission!and!for!better!understanding!between!the!various!materials!sectors!and!industrial!sectors.!The!A4M!organisation!has!no!legal!status!and!this!was!agreed.!This!situation!however!implicates!that!the!network!will!be!based!mainly!on!the!voluntary!work!of!the!A4M!partners!to!move!toward!the!“A4M!Materials!Common!House”.!!
Therefore,! FEMS! proposed! to! discuss! with! the! European! Science! Foundation,! ESF,! which!managed! the! ESF! Temporary! Expert! Committee! in! Materials! Science! and!Engineering!!(MatSEEC)!between!2009!and!2015.!MatSEEC!had!a!task!to!deliver!independent!science!strategy!and!policy!advice!to!European!national!agencies!and!ministries,! institutions!of!the!European!Commission,!the!European!Strategic!Forum!on!Research!Infrastructures!(ESFRI)!

as!well!as!to!the!related!scientific!communities.!FEMS!and!EMRS!were!paying!members!of!total!23! mostly! national! organisations.! In! accordance! with! its! Terms! of! Reference,! MatSEEC! was!subject! to!a! full! review! (Chaired!by!Professor!Sir! John!Pethica,!FRS),! implemented!under! the!supervision!of! the!ESF!Chief!Executive,!and!covering! the!period! from!2009! to!2013.!The! final!review!report!was!provided!to!the!ESF!Governing!Council!and!to!Members!in!September!2014!(all!the! information!are!extracted!from!a! letter!of!ESF,!Dr.!Martin!Hynes!from!17!November,!2015,!which! is! attached!as!Annex!5).! !Based!on! this! letter,! in!which!he! formally! closed! the!work! of!MatSEEC! but! mentioned! that! “The! Steering! Committee! strongly! encourages! the! European!Science!Foundation!and!the!member!organisations!willing!to!support!to!explore!the!collaboration!
and!joint:activities!available!as!partner!to!A4M!and!EMIRI.!Several!former!MatSEEC!Committee!
members!have!indicated!their!willingness!to!join!efforts!and!support!the!ESF!in!this!process”,!M.!Hofmann!tried!to!bring!together!ESF!and!A4M!to!discuss!if!a!collaboration!in!view!of!STGs!could!be!possible,!as!from!the!MatSEEC!a!certain!budget!is!left!and!a!management!like!for!MatSEEC!could! be! also! of! interest! for! the! STGs.! A! first!meeting! took! place! on! February! 14,! 2017!with!members! from! A4M! (Marco! Falzetti,! Michal! Basista,! Gabriel! Crean! EMRS! and! M.! Hofmann,!FEMS)!and! from!ESF! (Martin!Hynes,!who!also! joined! the!MATCH!meeting!on!15.2.2017,!and!Jean!Claude!Worms,!ESF!Chief!Executive).!It!was!a!first!step!towards!a!possible!collaboration!and!to!bring!both!organisations!closer!together!to!finally!manage!the!STGs.!However,!at!this!first!meeting! no! agreement! could! be! reached! and! further! effort! is! necessary! to! find! a! common!understanding!on!which!the!collaboration!can!be!based.!!

Until!now!networks!or!platforms!like!e.g.!A4M!or!EuMaT!are!working!only!on!voluntary!basis!(in!FEMS!all!Executive!Committee!members!are!working!on!this!basis!for!the!society!tasks)!and!even!in!many!cases!travel!and!accommodation!must!be!paid!by!the!organisations!that!are!serving!with!experts.!If!such!a!model!could!work!with!STGs!this!has!to!be!discussed!further.!!
In!the!forefront!of!the!STGs!meeting!M.!Hofmann!exchanged!also!with!representatives!of!ETPs!and!the!answer!was!pretty!clear!and!were!highlighted!again!at!the!A4M!Meeting!on!21.12.2016:!!
“Potential!activities!which!constitute!either!duplication!(or!close!to)!of!work!already!done!within!
ETPs!should!be!avoided.!ETPs!are!mostly!financed!by!interested!organizations!from!industry!
and!research!which!benefits! from!their!exchange! in!a!more!or! less!closed!circle!and!with!a!
certain!confidentiality.!It!would!be!not!fair!to!ETP!experts!and!a!waste!of!time!and!money!to!
carry!out!this!kind!of!task!again!by!experts!of!the!STGs.!!

In! this! current! situation! it! was! necessary! to! evaluate! if! experts! of! industry,! ETPs,! research!organisations,!and!universities!are! interested! in!engaging! in!STGs!under! these!objectives!and!certain!restrictions.!Therefore,!FEMS!organised!with!help!from!the!MATCH!partners,!especially!and!with!great!engagement!of!KMM^VIN,!then!also!IOM3!and!EURATEX,!the!Steel!Platform!and!NanoFuture!and!with!funds!from!the!budgets!of!KMM^VIN,!EURATEX!and!CSM,!the!STG!Seminar!and!Workshop!on!15.2.!2017!in!Leuven.!About!50!experts!attended!the!meeting!from!which!16!were!directly! involved!as!speakers!or!chairpersons.!The!overall!aim!of! the!participants!was! to!discuss!and!to!organise!the!implementation!of!the!STGs!in!a!sustainable!way.!!

The!Importance!of!Materials!
Materials!are!an!important!research!activity!as!Brett!Suddell,!FEMS!President!mentioned!when!giving! an! overview! on! the! Federation! of! European! Materials! Societies! which! is! active! in! the!materials!R&D!by!its!28!national!member!societies.!Materials!are!an!important!economic!factor!in!products!and!systems,!and!as!explained!by!Fabrice!Stassin,!EMIRI,!during!a!discussion,!up!to!60%!of! the!costs! in!a!product!are!caused!by!materials.! I!would!add! that!modern!or!advanced!materials!are!particularly!important!when!we!think!about!future!technologies.!States!will!have!to!save!energy!and!water!and!reduce!global!CO2!and!NOx!emissions,!which!is!not!feasible!without!modern!materials!technology.!Industry!and!society!need!rapid!communication!and!new!strategies!in! transport! and!urban!planning,!material! combinations!of!more! than!a!hundred!elements!and!process! technologies! currently! being! developed.! Bringing!material! science,! nanotechnologies,!biotechnologies,!medicine!and!communications!science!together!enabled!a!joint!improvement!of!the!value!of!life!especially!for!chronically!diseased!and!elder!people.!Today!we!have!the!insight!that!we!do!not!have! to!save! these!many! raw!materials,!which!we!need! for!a!modern!material!system,! however! we! need! to! save! resources! ^! the! idea! of! the! "circular! economy"! thus! the!increased! backflow! of! used!materials! into! the! production! circuit! –! for! many! industries! a! new!business.!!

The!speakers!of!the!various!sessions!highlighted!the!materials,!their!processes!and!applications!in!the!five!industrial! fields! (energy,! transport,! construction,! health! and! creative! industries)! but! also! indicated! the!consequences!of!the!new!materials!and!their!technologies.!"Europe!has!a!strong!position!in!science!and!patenting,"! said!Hélène!Chraye! from! the!European!Commission,!Advanced!Materials!and!Nanotechnologies,!Belgium!in!her!presentation,!stating!that!although!Europe!has!a!strong!position!in! science! and! in! patenting! activity! and! is! in! a! very! good! position! regarding! advanced!manufacturing,! bio^! and! nanotechnology,! its! position! could! still! be! improved! in! advanced!materials7.!She!also!underlined!that!there!is!still!a!gap!between!technology!based!research!and!manufacturing.!Although!Hélène!Chraye!showed!that!for!the!last!period!of!HORIZON!2020!there!is! still! 1,65Bn€*! for! 3! years! in!NMBP! from!which!44%!of! that! are! foreseen! for! “materials! and!nanotechnology”,! including! e.g.! materials! for! energy,! material! upscaling! hubs! Silvia!Pascale!working!in!LivaNova!(a!global! leader! in!the!cardiovascular!and!neuromodulation!fields)!mentioned!that!Cardiovascular!and!Age!related!pathologies!are!increasing!at!world!level!due!to!ageing!of!population,!changing!in!lifestyle!and!life!expectancies.!The!Biomedical!Industries!have! to! choose! materials! for! new/innovative! products! considering! several! factors! such! as!qualification,!regulation,!cost!and!biocompatibility.!The!request!from!the!clinics!and!the!society!to!find!solutions!for!reducing!the!number!of!Cardiovascular!and!age!related!pathologies!has!pushed!the! development! of! new! biomaterials! for! Advanced! Therapy! Medicinal! Products! The!transport!sector!is!also!driven!by!safety,!however!the!regulation!is!far!from!the!requirements!of!the!pharmaceutical!industry.!“We!should!not!forget!how!much!more!safety!today's!advanced!materials!solutions!can!provide”!̂ !as!Winfried!Keiper,!Bosch!GmbH!Germany!and!Geoff!Scamans,!Innoval,!United!Kingdom!have!mentioned!in!the!transport!session!^!with!new!integrated!solutions!for!lightweight!and!multifunctional!materials!like!for!frames,!complex!compounds!or!sensors!that!help!us!make!our! traffic! safer! today.!Geoff!Scamans!presented! the!project!REALCAR,!a!Low!Carbon!Vehicle,!which!was!evaluated!on!a!range!of!aluminium!recycled!sources!and!alloys!and!delivered!a!high!recycled!tolerant!grade!(RC5754)!to!support!closed^loop!recycling!of!press!shop!scrap.!Universities!and!car!companies!are!working!together!to!innovate!the!materials,!the!process!technology,!the!press!shop!and!the!suppliers!strategy.!This!is!a!whole!value!chain!approach!in!one! project! and! may! help! to! overcome! the! gap! between! the! technology! base! and! the!manufacturing!base!that!Hélène!Chraye!mentioned.!

New! materials! and! their! system! solutions! in! the! field! of! energy! should! enable! reduction! of!emissions!and!environmental!footprint,!but!also!create!jobs!in!EU!and!providec!competitiveness!to!EU!manufacturing!industry!through!low!cost!electricity,!as!Maxim!Konter,!GE!Switzerland!and!Thomas!Unhold,!Helmholtz!Center!for!Materials!and!Energy,!Germany!have!shown.!Maxim!Konter!showed!first!of!all!the!various!applications!for!advanced!materials!e.g.!for!the!various!generations!of! energy! generation! like! renewable! and! fossil! or! still! nuclear,! the! storage! and! conversion! of!energy!and!the!smart!grids,!the!control!systems!to!facilitate!the!connection!of!sources!as!well.!He!stressed,!that!the!forecast!for!the!energy!sector!depends!on!the!policy,!not!only!in!Europe!but!also!in! the! other! economies! like!USA,!China! and! India.! In! his! presentation! author! refers! to! public!sources!for!energy!forecasts!and!requirements!to!materials!for!power!generation.!Beyond!steady!growth!of!the!share!of!“new”!renewables!like!solar!and!wind,!nuclear,!hydro!and!even!coal!remain!the!basis!for!world!energy!production!even!in!2040.!“As!of!November!2016,!30!countries!worldwide!are!operating!450!nuclear!reactors!for!electricity!generation!and!60!new!nuclear!plants!are!under!construction!in!15!countries.“!was!mentioned!in!the!World!Statistics!of!NEI,!the!Nuclear!Energy!Institute!in!Washington!DC.8!„Nuclear!power!plants!provided!10.9!percent!of!the!world's!electricity!production!in!2012.!In!2015,!13!countries!relied!on!nuclear!energy!to!supply!at!least!one^quarter!of! their! total! electricity“4! host!three!quarters!in!2050.!To!cope!with!this!continued!urban!growth!we!will!need!to!invent!new!

Therefore,! we! should! not! only! assign! the! findings! from! industrial! and! scientific! research! and!developments!to!the!respective!industrial!sectors,!but!we!should!recognize!similarities!between!industrial! requirements! and! research^relevant! possibilities.! Bertrand! Fillon,! Centre! technique!Innovation!Plasturgie!Composites!(IPC),!France!depicted!that!very!nicely!in!his!presentation!about!the!innovative!plastic!industry!which!gave!also!an!impression!about!the!enormous!value!which!is!behind! such! industrial! activities! and! the! opportunities! for! people! to! get! employment! in!manufacturing! and! not! only! service! industries! which! in! many! countries! in! Paula!Vilarinho!from!the!Portuguese!Materials!Society!made!a!survey!in!Portugal!on!the!impact!of!materials!on!the!economy!could!show!the!hotspots!of!some!of!the!important!materials!activities!in! her! country! and!Jérôme!Gavillet! from!CEA!Liten,! The! addressed! fields! „Nanotechnologies,! Advanced! Materials,! and! Advanced! Manufacturing! and!Processing“!cover!most!of!the!European!industry!sectors!and!their!markets.!If!one!counts!the!time!from!the!creation!of!a!research!project!at!fundamental!level!to!the!hopefully!successful!conversion!into!a!product,!one!comes!to!approx.!15!to!20!years,!so!that!the!impact!from!a!research!programme!which!starts!in!2020!becomes!visible!earliest!in!2035!or!even!2040.!This!means!it!is!necessary!to!start!to!think!about!an!overall!materials!strategy!which!supports!a!broad!field!of!European!industry!as!early!as!possible,!to!accelerate!the!development!process!and!to!achieve!added!values!for!the!society.!
The!ex^post!evaluation!of!FP7!in!201613,!having!had!a!budget!of!55’806!Mio!€!for!7!years!and!funded!25’000!projects!(18.3%!of!all!eligible!proposals)!,!has!shown!that!170’000!papers!have!been!produced,!more!than!1,700!patent!applications!and!more!than!7,400!commercial!exploitations!have!resulted!from!the!projects.!The! Public^Private! Partnerships! (PPP)! boosted! industry! participation,! in! areas! as! diverse! as!pharmaceuticals,!aeronautics!and!fuel!cells!and!hydrogen,! it! is!estimated!that!FP7!will! increase!GDP!by!€500!billion!in!total!(over!the!next!25!years)!through!its!indirect!economic!effects!and!create!over!130’000!research! jobs!per!year.!FP7!addressed!transnational!societal!challenges!e.g.! in!the!area!of!energy,!ICT,!environment,!health,!food!safety,!climate!change,!security,!employment,!poverty!and!exclusion.!In!total!38%!of! the!workforce!of!FP7!were!women.!NMP! received!3’183!Mio!€! (5.7%),!however!materials!were!also!present!in!other!programmes,!e.g!health,!ITC,!transport!or!energy.14!!So!that!we!roughly!estimate!the!volume!of!materials!related!R&D!in!FP!7!of!about!10%.!This!shows!the!important!impact!of!materials!R&D!on!the!development!in!all!important!fields.!HORIZON!2020!programme!is!too!early!to!evaluate,!!
The!challenges!of!Europe!are!described!by!the!European!Commission!as!following:!
„Europe!is!a!global!leader!in!the!development!of!Key!Enabling!Technologies.!However,!our!record!in!translating!this!knowledge!advantage!into!marketable!products!and!services!doesn't!match!this.!
KETs:related!manufacturing!is!decreasing!in!the!EU!and!patents!are!increasingly!being!exploited!
outside! the! EU…..! KETs! is! its! difficulty! converting! knowledge! into! marketable! KETs:based!
products! and! services.! This! innovation! gap! has! been! identified! as! the! European! 'Valley! of!

and!are!still!not!solved!but!will!continue!in!HORIZON!2020.!In!addition!further!societal!challenges!occur!due!to!the!elder!population,!the!climate!change!and!geopolitical!changes.!
While!the!workprogramme!of!HORIZON!2020!in!the!years!2014/15!showed!nearly!24!NMP!themes!around!nanomaterials! and! advanced! materials! covering! all! kinds! of! production! technologies,! biomaterials! for!various!health!problems,!materials!for!energy!technologies,!batteries!and!materials!for!creative!industries!etc.!the!next!part!of!the!programme!(2016/17)!proposed!!“leadership!in!enabling!and!industrial!technologies”,!addressing! advanced! materials! and! nanotechnologies! for! (i)! high! added! value! products! and! process!industries,! for! (ii)! for! healthcare! and! for! (iii)! for! energy! applications! and! (iv)! computational! materials!modelling!for!the!development!of!nanotechnologies!and!advanced!materials.!
Materials!infiltrating!all!industrial!sectors!and!many!of!the!materials!research!and!development!outcomes!were!crucial!in!having!a!high!impact!on!our!technologies!and!will!also!allow!in!future!to!get!to!the!forefront!

It! is!suggested!that! the!end!user!would!be!more! involved! in! the!research!strategies,!e.g.!by!involving!consumer!or!patient!associations,! retailers!and!non^governmental!organizations,!depending!on!the!importance!of!an!industrial!sector,!either!in!the!evaluation!of!the!project!proposals,!participating!in!the!projects!in!a!workpackage!or!participating!in!project!evaluations!during!the!funding!period.!In!this!way,!the!project! initiators! would! be! directly! concerned! with! the! social! challenges,! but! they! would! also! be! more!concerned!with!the!implementation!of!their!project!ideas!in!a!user^friendly!application.!

The!activity!of!the!expert!groups!(STGs)!from!the!viewpoint!of!the!requirements!for!the!
materials! and! the! processes! necessary! for! a! costHeffective,! timeHsaving! and!
environmentally! friendly!production!of!products/systems! in!Europe,!may!go!beyond!the!
tasks!of! the!experts!of! the! individual!ETPs!or!of!Scientific!expert!groups.!Experts! from!
STGs!should!be!able!to!present!an!assessment!of!material!research!that!does!not!stop!at!
the!current!technological,!political,!economic!or!ecological!boundaries.!The!service!that!
STGs!can!provide!will!not!be!comparable!to!the!normal!materials!road!map!as!e.g.!created!
by!the!ETPs,!which!need!records!of!defined!steps!in!defined!times!to!achieve!their!goals.!!
On!the!contrary,!the!STGs!could!act!like!a!“Council!of!Experts”!for!the!various!industrial!
sectors,!which,!in!addition!to!a!macroeconomic!and!technological!aspects,!also!shows!the!
influence! of!materials! developments! on! the! society.! In! addition! to! the! question! of! the!
growth!of!Europe!through!materialHbased!technologies,!the!question!could!be:!!

and! question! those! solutions! that! come! only! by! small! steps! and! not! by! new!ways! of!
thinking.!This!would!influence!research!programs,!since!the!objectives!of!a!project!are!not!
only! to! develop! a! new! material,! achieve! better! properties! or! involve! more! favorable!
processes,! but! would! be! based! on! a! technological,! socioHeconomic! and! ecological!
