    C altech invites studentsfrom a select group of liberal arts

    colleges to transfer to Caltech upon

    completion of their junior year. After two

    years in residence at Caltech, and the

    successful completion of its require-

    ments, 3/2 Program students will be

    granted a Bachelor of Science degreefrom Caltech and a second bachelors

    degree from their liberal arts college.

    Students may transfer into any Caltech

    option (major) with thesupport of their home institution.

    It is expected that the 3/2 Programcolleges will determine which of theoptions offered by Caltech are appropri-ate for their students. Some schools maychoose to limit the degree choice to anengineering major to fit the traditional3/2 Program. Others may select majors,such as Geology or Planetary Science,

    not often available at liberal artscolleges.

    ADMISSIONS

    Students from the following institutionsare eligible to apply to the 3/2 Program:

    o Bowdoin College (ME)o Bryn Mawr College (PA)o Grinnell College (IA)o Haverford College (PA)o Mt. Holyoke College (MA)

    o Oberlin College (OH)o Occidental College (CA)o Ohio Wesleyan University (OH)o Pomona College (CA)o Reed College (OR)o Spelman College (GA)o Wesleyan University (CT)o Whitman College (WA)

    Applications are available from the 3/2Program liaison at each of the liberalarts college partners. The postmarkdeadline for submission of 3/2 Programapplications and support materials isApril 1, 2009.

    Admission to the 3/2 Program isnot guaranteed and is determined by

    the Caltech Upperclass AdmissionsCommittee. Students applying shouldhave a record of superior academicachievement at their home institutions,and strong letters of recommendationfrom their 3/2 Program liaison and anadditional science, mathematics, orengineering faculty member. Applicantsmust have completed, at their homecollege, a minimum of one year of phys-ics, one year of mathematics (includingmultivariable calculus and differentialequations), and one year of chemistry.Two years of mathematics and physics

    are recommended.

    FINANCIAL AID

    Caltech meets the demonstratedfinancial need of each eligible admitteddomestic student (U.S. citizens andpermanent residents). Financial assis-tance is not available for international3/2 candidates. All international 3/2candidates must submit the Inter-national Student Supplemental Formto the Caltech Financial Aid Office

    indicating that they are able to providefor their Caltech education and that theyunderstand they will not be eligible forfinancial aid in future years at Caltech.

    ABOUT CALTECH

    The California Institute of Technologyis an independent university locatedin Pasadena, a city of 136,000, approxi-mately 10 miles from downtown LosAngeles. The Institute provides aresearch-oriented environmentcentered on math, science, and engi-neering. Caltech has an enrollmentof about 900 undergraduate studentsand 1,200 graduate students, and offersundergraduates the advantages of athree-to-one student-faculty ratio.

    Caltech scientists have receivedwide recognition for their distinguishedachievements. Thirty-two Nobel Prizeshave been awarded to alumni andfaculty and 47 alumni and faculty mem-bers have received the National Medalof Science for outstanding contributions

    to the development of science andengineering. Nine alumni (two of whomare also trustees, and one of whom isalso a faculty member), two additionaltrustees, and one additional facultymember have received the NationalMedal of Technology.

    The Honor System is a code of behav-ior that applies to all aspects of campuslife. It is an agreement among membersof the Caltech community (students,faculty, and staff), and is based on themutual trust expressed in a single state-ment: No member of the Caltech com-

    munity shall take unfair advantage ofany other member of the Caltech com-munity. The Honor System at Caltech ishighly valued.

    Courses are scheduled duringthe three terms of the academic year,which lasts from late Septemberuntil mid-June. Fall term ends in mid-December, winter term lasts from earlyJanuary to mid-March, and spring termfrom early April until mid-June. Thereare no summer sessions, althoughregularly enrolled students often pursueresearch on campus at this time.

    3/2 Admission ChecklistThe following is a checklist of all the documents that are required as part of the 3/2

    admissions process. The postmark deadline for each item, with the exception of completed

    transfer entrance examinations, is April 1, 2009.
