The Need for Vision

I love the story about a little boy named Billy. Billy and his dad were planning

on going fishing on Saturday. It would be a whole day of fishing fun. They got eve-

rything packed up and read to go on Friday night. But when they woke up early

Saturday morning the clouds were dark, the wind was blowing and it was raining

cats and dogs...not exactly fishing weather.

Little Billy didn’t take this unexpected turn of events very well. He griped, com-

plained and cried. He kicked the couch, the dog and the cat. In his eyes, nothing

was right. He continually asked, “Why did it have to rain today???” His dad tried to

comfort him by reminding him that farmers need rainy days for crops to grow and

the trees, flowers and grass needed watering, but nothing seemed to matter to Billy

other than he couldn’t go fishing.

But about mid-day it stopped raining, the clouds broke and the sun came out.

His dad said, “We are packed up and ready to go so why don’t we go fishing for the

rest of the day?” That afternoon Billy and his dad had the lake to themselves and

they caught more fish than they could have ever imagined.

That evening they sat down to fresh fish for supper and Billy was asked to say

the blessing. So little Billy prayed, “Dear God, thank you for these fish AND if I

sounded a little grumpy earlier today, it was because I couldn’t see far enough

ahead.”

May we all learn a lesson from little Billy. When life takes an unexpected turn,

Christians need to remember to look ahead and know that we serve a God who

holds the future in his hand and he has promised it can work together for good to

those who love him (Rom. 8:28).

Christian Ethics – The Problem of Drinking – Part Six

One of the reasons why I’m opposed to drink-ing is because of the harm that it does to the body. The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian brethren telling them, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; there-fore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's” (1 Cor. 6:19, 20). My body be-longs to God. It serves as the dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. I am supposed to use my body to glorify God. Therefore, I must refrain from anything that will cause harm to my body. To say the least, alcohol presents a health hazard. Dr. Howard Kelly who had been a surgeon at John Hopkins University stated that “There is no disease in the world for which alco-hol is a cure…On the other hand it does undeniably cause thousands of cases of disease…Its use is ru-inous to the kidneys, liver, heart and smaller blood vessels, and gives rise to that most common fatality, high blood pressure.” The greatest damage done by alcohol is to the brain. Dr. Melvin Knisley, head of the Depart-ment of Anatomy at the Medical College of South Carolina noted that “So called social drinking does a great deal of damage to the brain. When you feel good, you have probably destroyed some brain cells.” Alcohol is a depressant. “Alcohol diminishes the acuteness of sensory perception. It delays or weakens motor performance and physical coordina-tion…It is well known that alcohol, through its dulling effect on the higher brain centers, may set free un-derlying emotional drives, with usually, disastrous consequences.” Alcohol decreases the ability of the brain to function at its best. Unfortunately the drinker is often unaware of it. The drinking of alcoholic beverages gives the driver false confidence in himself. Yet the results of this false confidence are often disastrous. As Solomon said, “Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise” (Proverbs 20:1). The alcohol in any bev-erage makes a person believe that he is capable of doing certain things that he cannot do. Alcohol destroys the ability to make moral judgments. Paul commanded the brethren at Phi-lippi, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praise-worthy--meditate on these things” (Phil. 4:8). Al-cohol prevents one from thinking on good things and generally leads to thinking on those things that are wrong.
