Why Petroleum Geology and Geophysics?
Understanding the structure and physical properties of the subsurface is key to the efcient discovery and use
of earth resources as well as sequestration or storage of waste products of energy production.
The MSc in Petroleum Geology and Geophysics provides training in all aspects of applied structural geology
and geophysics preparing students for working life as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Lectures and seminars
are supplemented by lab/computer-based practicals and eldwork. Assessment includes reports and results of
group projects as well as exams. All these activities are supported by a dedicated computer suite with variousindustry standard software packages and the chance to use a wide range of geophysical survey equipment.
For the taught compenent of the course, students have a choice of modules including:
Time Series Analysis and Inversion Theory
Near-Surface Geophysics
Gravity and Magnetic Methods
Generic Geophysics Skills and Seismic
Fundamentals
Seismic Reection Acquisition and Processing
Application of structural models to seismic
interpretation
Structural geology/basin analysis eldwork
Geomechanics and reservoir geophysics and
structural geology
Hydrogeology and Contaminant Processes
Structure and hydrocarbon prospectivity of
basins
Sequence stratigraphy
2D and 3D seismic reection methods and
interpretation
Petrophysics and Geophysical Reservoir
Evaluation
Structure and Hydrocarbon Prospectivity of
Basins
Seismic Reection Interpretation
Borehole Logging
Reservoir simulation
Petroleum reservoir engineering
The most challenging and exciting part of the course
for most students is the Individual Project, which startsat the end of the 1st year of study. This project tests
students skills in applying the experiences acquired
during the course to a specic problem.
Most projects have an association with an exploration
company or other external organisation and students
have the opportunity to work alongside geoscience
professionals in the ofces of industrial partners.

FacilitiesA wide range of computing facilities are available. We
run 2D and 3D seismic interpretationon PCs using
the Kingdom Suite software. Geocellular modelling is
delivered on the Petrel platform. Structural modelling
and restoration is taught with Midland Valleys 2DMove
software.
The students have access to a suite of laboratories
including a dedicated computer cluster which in
addition to the packages above, run an array of structural
modelling, GIS and 3D visualisation programmes.
