Athens County is home to Ohio University, Hocking College, OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital and Nelsonville Health Center, and Holzer Athens. The county features large employers such as Quidel, a bio-medicine company that is the world’s largest manufacturer of cell culture, and unique dining experiences with local favorites such as Casa Nueva and Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery. An entrepreneurial spirit abounds in Athens County and many small businesses flourish with the support of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio University Innovation Center, ACEnet, the Economic Development Council and many other organizations. Many specialty food producers, artists, researchers and consultants call

Nelsonville, a small town in the northern part of the county, was once the center of brick production and is enjoying a lively renewal. Upscale restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, craft shops and stores, and Stuart’s Opera House are all located in the “Arts District” in Nelsonville. These businesses are part of the entrepreneurial spirit that has become the new face of Nelsonville.
