Cinema land secureit was a long shot with a tight deadline
— more than $250,000 in 4 weeks — but it’sdone! Directors of the Merritt communitycinema Society were able to raise about$100,000, and the balance has been pro-vided by a very generous patron. The loanwill need to be repaid, with 0% interest, butit means the group was able to meet thedeadline for the land deal to close.
And so the fundraising continues fora grassroots project that has the potentialto uplift this community, so get involved!You can monitor the progress on thegiant thermometer at the corner of cout-lee & Garcia, site of the future Merrittmovie theatre.
Coquihalla fatalitywednesday afternoon, the coquihalla
was closed between Merritt & Hope aftera couple of vehicle incidents.
About 5km north of Mine creek Roadan 81-year-old man lost control of his ve-hicle and it left the road. He was ejectedafter it crossed the centre median andnorthbound lanes before rolling down anembankment.He was pronounced deadat the scene. Roads in the area were icyand covered with snow.
RcMP said it appeared that speed rel-ative to conditions and failure to wear aseatbelt were factors to the incident.

i attended the committee of thewhole [an info session with Peter Bros. rep-resentatives regarding their proposed asphaltplant] last night, and have come to theconclusion that if you want to evadequestions, you baffle with bs.
i have several questions for themayor, first one being: after listening tothe concerns of the residents of Merrittand the overwhelming resistance to thisproject, are you trying to push itthrough? Do you have some vested inter-est in either the sale or satisfying somepromise made to someone?
Since when does moving crusharound not create dust, and ‘rocks havewater?’ Maybe you have been listeningwith different ears than the folks you aresupposed to be concerned about.
There comes a time, in certain situa-tions, when the populace must rise up andinstead of complaining, come out and fightfor our rights. it may take a demonstrationto make folks aware of the actions of someof our elected officials. Being muzzleddoesn't cut it with me. Millie Mitchell
