Keira D'Amato was a very special college athlete, running 5Ks in the low 16s and 10Ks in the low 34s for American

University. Perhaps her best races were sub 5:00 pace 3Ks. After college, she left racing for a number of years. After the birth of her second child, she returned to racing. Her times were always open class when she reentered in 2017. Still, looking at the history of the last five years, it took her a little time to move up to the very top. In 2019, she blossomed as much as anyone could possibly imagine. That is until 2020. She went from Regional class, to National class, and then exploded to World class with no apparent limit at age 35.

There have been but a few regional runners who had PRs late in their careers. Cindy Conant’s narrow loss to Joan Samuelson at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 1:03:55 to 1:04:00 at age 55. Patrick Griffith, 55, had a lifetime PR at the Pike’s Peek 10K in 35:51. Perry Shoemaker, 48, had an excellent PR at the Eugene Marathon in 2:43:33 as the second eldest qualifier. However, D’Amato who turned 36 in October is on pace to fulfill her dream of an Olympic medal in either the 5K or the 10K. Anyone watching the video of either the Sugar Run 5K or the record setting Up Dawg 10M can see how seemingly without effort she surged away from the elite competitors fading in her rear-view mirror.

2015-2020 History

Susanna Sullivan was riding high after being the Open champion of the year for three straight years 2015-2017. In 2015, she ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom that was shortened to 15.1K and had her best race in 51:44. She also boasted a 33:56 at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K. The next year Sullivan was dominant, running the HCA 8K in 25:57. Bethany Sachtleben finished the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K as third overall in 34:45 to take sixth place.

For the 2017 rankings, Sullivan had another fine Alexandria 5M in 27:29 to best second ranked Sachtleben (27:52). Sachtleben won it all in a fabulous 2:39:00 at

the Anthem Richmond Marathon, besting seventh ranked Keira D’Amato (2:47:00). Sullivan defeated D’Amato at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 56:12 to 1:04:54. Sachtleben beat D’Amato at the Leesburg 20K, 1:12:48 to 1:17:03.

In 2018, Sullivan was away most of the year and Sachtleben took over. It started when Sachtleben ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 54:59. Sullivan finished 59:09. Sachtleben added an excellent American Family Fitness Half Marathon in 1:13:35. But now, D’Amato was starting to really heat up and she moved into third with an excellent Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:16:32 for an overall victory.

In 2019 Sachtleben, like Sullivan, was not racing enough locally to be ranked. Sachtleben did boast an even better Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 53:40 (the course was 80 meters short). D’Amato finished third at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 33:37, a minute behind Sachtleben who won it all in 32:38. D’Amato ended the year as the champion for 2019, winning the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 33:53.

For the winter 2020 ranking season, D’Amato was gearing up to be unstoppable. On the first day, she won the First Day 5K for the fourth time in a row, the last three were overall wins. In 2017 she ran 19:37, then in 2018 it was 17:16, in 2019 it was 16:45 and then leaped skyward with 16:09 in 2020. All three of these runners raced three times. Second ranked Sachtleben ran the Martel Half Marathon to victory in 1:12:34 as well as another victory at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M (26:52). Fifth ranked Sullivan ran another excellent 2:43:31 at the VCU Health Richmond Marathon, fourth overall. For the trifecta that day in Richmond, D’Amato bolted to a second overall at the HCA 8K in 25:59. The next month, she began to ease away from her challengers with an excellent Jingle All the Way 15K in 49:50.

During this time period, these three champions racked up 44 overall victories. D’Amato won 19 of 28, Sachtleben won 15 of 20, and Sullivan won 10 of 14. D'Amato did break out at the 2019 Berlin Marathon in 2:34:55.

In January, D’Amato lowered her PR at the Houston Half Marathon in 1:10:01. She placed 15th overall at the USATF Olympic Marathon Trials with a new PR in 2:34:24. Three places behind her, Bethany Sachtleben arrived at the finish line in 2:36:34. Sullivan ran a very credible 2:46:39. Then came Covid 19 to close down every competitive race of any size in the region. D’Amato was undeterred and in June was paced through a break through 15:04 5K time trial on the track.

In July, she returned to the track to win the 10,000 meters in 32:33 at a COVID-adjusted meet in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she set a personal best. Next in October, she lowered her half marathon PR 1:08:57 at the Michigan Pro Half. Two weeks later on November 14, she won it all at the Sugar Run 5K, a rolling

course, in 15:08. She is the owner of two of the top ten fastest 5Ks run by an American woman.

Ten days later, five elite women, including these three (D’Amato, Sachtleben, and Sullivan) lined up here in Washington, DC for the Up Dawg 10M. D’Amato was a heavy favorite who had been planning for the assault on the women’s American 10-mile record. The race was billed as an official record attempt, with the runners chasing the women-only American 10-mile record. Molly Huddle owns the mixed American record, which she set at the Houston Half-Marathon in 2018 when she ran a 50:52 (on route to the national half-marathon record of 1:07:25). Indeed, this would be a three-fold attempt as there is the 51:47 run by Cathy O'Brien in August 1989 at the Bobby Crim 10M. It was the world record for two years. Some organizations such as ARRS (Association of Road Racing Statisticians) do not recognize any distance part of a longer event. Janet Bawcom ran 52:12 at the 2014 Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run ahead of Sullivan’s 54:31 which was a women’s only event.

Also in the race was Emily Durgin with a road 10K of 33:38 and Molly Seidel with a 1:09:35 half marathon PR and a 2:27:31 runner-up spot at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. As the race began. D’Amato moved out smoothly to the lead. The others hung on for a while but by the halfway point it was just a question of how many of the three “records” she would break. She crushed the first of 52:12 and by the ninth mile it was certain she would pass the second (51:48). Those watching the race have to believe the third is within her grasp, perhaps as soon as the next time. Her intermediate 10M split in Houston had been 53:23 and she was close a full minute faster in Michigan for the half marathon with an intermediate 10M split of 52:38.

All four finishers had PRs and with Seidel’s PR in the marathon at 2:25:13, D’Amato’s next race was less of an awesome, incredible, unbelievable, magnificent accomplishment because we at least had a hint from her earlier triumphs. On 12/20 at the Marathon Project, she ran the eighth fastest American woman’s marathon in an astonishing 12-minute PR 2:22:56. Only Sara Hall, who ran the second fastest time ever in 2:20:32, could vanquish her… for now. Most people are probably thinking she should go for the Olympics in the marathon. Others are waiting to see her in the 5K or even the 10K. Think Emil Zátopek.

Anyone watching this dynamo at the beginning of a race can feel the energy and power ready to go. When the gun sounds, there is nothing holding her back and like a thoroughbred hearing the starting gate open, she is off like a jet.

Below are D’Amato’s best race efforts starting with the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in April 2019 and ongoing with her spectacular Marathon Project race in December 2020.

What does this mean for future? I predict a 2:20:00 marathon, an American record in the half marathon, and a full record (sub-50:52) 10 Mile. Certainly, she will break 15 for the 5K and I would expect a sub-31:00 10K as well. At both of these distances, she is the favorite for American road records.

2020 Spring through Autumn (Pandemic I) Regional Runner Rankings

Three Periods Combined During the Pandemic

(March 14, 2020– November 08, 2020)

Pandemic I is like no other in the history of racing. To get any kind of meaningful rankings we needed to combine three periods, spring, summer, and fall and that was still much smaller than the winter. With this in mind and only two ranking

Page 8: 2t9pvj7kfhg2g4tc55ausblh-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com · Web view2020 Spring through Autumn (Pandemic I) Regional Runner Rankings. Three Periods Combined During the Pandemic (March 14,

periods for 2020, there will not be any Best of the Year Rankings for 2020. With no races at all between mid-March and mid-June the totals for races during Pandemic I came to a mere 168 races. That is one third of spring 2019 and about 1/8 as many races as usually occurs between March and November. There were no major races.

Only about ¼ of the races featured more than 100 finishers with just five having more than 200, led by the Patrick Henry Half Marathon with 325. It can be no surprise that the percentage of ranked times was more than twice what it has ever been, standing at ten percent. Still, only fifteen races showcased more than 20 ranked runners and twelve of those were 5Ks.

101 of the races were 5Ks, 25 were 10Ks, 13 were half marathons, 11 were 8Ks, and 5 were marathons. Ten milers suffered the most with just 2.

Below are the top dozen most competitive events, with the most ranked times listed:

Virtual races are, of course not races any more than dreams are reality. Unfortunately, you cannot extend a racing streak with a virtual time reported. By all means, continue to train and to run hard. Through most of my running years, I have been accused of racing my training runs. I have even accumulated PRs (personal records) on these runs but they are not races, not even virtually. The precursor to virtual racing is of course net timing. Neither are legitimate except for your own personal recording. Train hard as if it were a race and you will be leading the way when we do return to real racing.

As all road racing is on different courses and conditions, the human touch is definitely more accurate than a pure numbers content from a fully computerized model. Computers do not account for incorrect race distances, or weather differences, or even different difficulty levels of terrain. The goal of any objective rankings system is to have the fewest surprises. A runner generally knows his or

Page 9: 2t9pvj7kfhg2g4tc55ausblh-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com · Web view2020 Spring through Autumn (Pandemic I) Regional Runner Rankings. Three Periods Combined During the Pandemic (March 14,

her own pecking order and can exalt the rewards when they have a special race that catapults them above their normal place.

Racing, unlike many other sports, is fully age and sex-based. Though many times older runners can excel in the open section of an event, mostly runners are competing against runners of the same sex and in a narrow (usually five year) age grouping. Often when races do not know the runner’s age, they use 99 or 0. For some reason they continue having the age group 70-99 or 0-19, instead of 70-98 or 1-19, causing silly division errors. It seems unlikely that too many 99-year-olds or pre-anniversary babies are being gipped out of awards. However, often elder runners and teens have been. More and more, the model for race results is ad-based with bells and whistles. Runners are urged, and many times forced, to click on separate pages to get necessary information such as their age and sex even as they are bombarded by more frivolous information. If a runner’s age is listed, anyone can ascertain which age group they are in. If only their age group is listed, one cannot tell their age and cannot be sure which of the standard age groups that they belong in. It seems obvious that a runner already knows his or her own time and is really looking at results for comparison with others runners.

*** New for the Runner Rankings we are posting in Blue all the runners with National Class times (80%) of the top-rated time for each division based on their best time in 10K equivalence. The times are based on the youngest in each division except for the 19 and younger which is 19 for the strongest time. There will be some runners who are up to the 80% level by being on the older side of the 5-year division that get missed. However, in this manner, everyone in Blue will be at least 80%. ***

For Pandemic I, the best racing season, just five women’s divisions had at least one National Class racer ranked, a total of 6. In the Open division, there were 2. The men were more impressive with 26 National Class racers, though no one 70 and older made it. In the Open division, there were 9, though 5 double dipped from other groups.

The top age graded runners that qualified (all above 85%) were led by Stephen Chantry, 65, at 87.71%, followed closely by Mark Neff, 58, at 87.58%. Then came Langston Gash, 23, at 86.85%, Robert Whitaker, 61, at 85.26%, and Adam Otstot, 38, at 85.08%. The lone woman was Suzanne Porter, 59, at 85.48%

In the “you got to play to win” category, i.e., you only ran one event an additional 38 men and 11 women ran a National Class race. Just six men but no women had better than 85%.

No runners made World Class status: 90% Age Grade:

Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only earn an asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone, cited at the start of each division, is the fastest qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. Otherwise, we have added the name of the runner who had the fastest time but only one qualifier.

Now let’s see who made the top.

Open Men

Bullseye Track 5K 14:46, 10K = 30:47 Eldad Mulugeta

More than half of the runners come from other divisions. As always, it was the larger, more competitive races that determined the rankings. The six largest events, all 5Ks, decided almost all of the placements. Easily the largest, the Bullseye Track 5K led the way with our champion Langston Gash finishing third there in 14:57. Fifth place Shannon Dooley edges sixth place Kevin Baranoski, 15:41 to 15:44, though both just cracked the top twenty at the event. At the fourth

most competitive race, the Bel Air Town Run 5K, Gash proffered a dominating win in 15:06, ahead of Dooley (15:48) and Baranoski (16:11).

The third most competitive race was run by runner-up Cedric Drennen at the race with the second most runners, the FAB 5K, in 15:24. Ninth ranked Andrew Parkins was there (16:26). But his best race of five age group wins was the second overall at the Health Focus of SW Virginia Salem 5K in 16:08. Drennen helped his cause with an overall win at the Jackson River Trail 5K in 16:10 early in the season.

Third ranked Zane Chalker was the outlier as more than 75 percent of the races were 5Ks. He ran two longer races. His marvelous Greg Shank Half Marathon in 1:11:11 was one of three races 10K or longer. Next up in fourth place, Roger Hopper snared more than his share of races. His eight races were more than 25 percent of the entire field of division qualifiers. He also boasted six overall wins and two second place overall races. He recorded matching 15:45 wins at the second largest race (Queen's Lake 5K) and the fifth largest (Run the D.O.G. 5K). Seventh ranked William Thompson edged eighth ranked Adam Otstot, 15:50 to 15:54 as they filed in right behind Hopper at the Queen's Lake 5K. The Powhatan Creek Trail 5K was tied with the D.O.G. for the fifth most competitive field with Hopper winning in 16:05 and Thompson close behind in 16:10.

Bullseye Track 5K 14:46, 10K = 30:47 Eldad Mulugeta

As a sign of the times, the teen divisions are double the number of the next most populist division. Two of the three largest races by far by ranked runners, comprising more than 130 qualifiers, were the Bullseye Track 5K and the FAB 5K. That being noted, only nine runners availed themselves to a second race after dueling in one of those two events. Also note that with age grading the 5K scores higher than other distances. In the teen division, in contrast to all the other

divisions, the younger runners score higher with similar times than the older runners. Thus, sixth ranked Nathan Atchue, 15, had the highest age grading. He was the only male qualifiers that ran in the FAB 5K (15:52).

Our champion Zane Chalker took the longer route with an impressive overall win at the Greg Shank Half Marathon in 1:11:11 ahead of seventh ranked Henry Schmidt (1:13:48) who was third overall. That was a continuation of their duel at the Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler that Chalker won 27:00 to 27:31. Battling for the runner-up spot stayed in house with the Wedding twins, Zachary and Jeffrey. Zachary was the overall winner in four races to Jeffrey’s four second overall. In their fifth and best race, to show how tough the competition was at the Bullseye Track 5K, Zachary was ninth overall in 15:29, while Jeffrey was 14 th in 15:35.

Talking third and fourth place was also razor close. Shannon Dooley finished five places back of Jeffrey Wedding but only six seconds to take fourth place. Kevin Baranoski was on his heels in 15:44. The Bel Air Two run 5K was delayed until August third year. Dooley ran a fine 15:48 to once again hold off Baranoski who ran 16:11. Last of the 80 per centers, Tyler Flateau came in with an Elite division time of 16:20, 38th place in the Bullseye 5K. Ninth ranked Cian Bell won it all at the Harvest Moon 5K in 16:29. Tenth ranked Cooper Hurst scooted homer at the Gummy Bear 5K in 16:30 for second overall.

This usually smallest of divisions shrank to mere trio. Adam Otstot steamed though October with a couple of sub 16:00 5Ks, first the overall at the Fire Chiefs 5K in 15:58. Next, he pinched off four seconds at the Queen's Lake 5K, finishing third to two other Elite division racers. Runner-up Andrew Parkins finished in the top three in four of his five races. His 16:08 at the Health Focus of SW Virginia Salem 5K, finishing only behind the fastest master of the period, overall winner David Angell (15:53), was his best event. Jared Jenkins takes the third spot, racing the Run 4 Fredericksburg 4M in 22:52.

In July, he bested Neibauer at the Run 4 Fredericksburg 4M as the overall winner, 22:07 to 23:29, for his second-best age grading and fourth best event. Jenkins finished in 22:52 while still a sub master. In August, he produced his worst age grading, and with second overall, his only loss at the Devil's Den 10M in 57:31.

Runner-up Mark Tompkins is older (44) so his Run the D.O.G. 5K in 16:49 was the best age graded race among qualifiers. At the Halloween 5K, Pirch won it all in 16:37 for his best age grade, though his third fastest event. Behind him there were: Jenkins (17:06), Neibauer (17:50), and Haymer (17:59).

Fifth ranked Benn Thomas is the master of the Bishop Events racing. He was the overall winner in seven of the eight races where he qualified. His best race was the victory at the Fort Hunt 10K in 36:14. Gregg Dean slips ahead of him to fourth with his best of three top two overall or better finishes, the Harvest Moon 5K in 17:22.

With just three players and interaction among the three, it would seem easy to parse their placement. Greg Lynn with seven wins jumps out with seven victories and the fastest race. That looks really good. Then we notice that runner-up Randy Shelton achieved the second fastest event as second master at the Dismal Swamp 5M in 30:30. That was ahead of Lynn and another qualifier with just one event. Now we seeing Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) ties at 35. Next in line though at the third fastest event, Lynn returns the favor and lights up Shelton at the Powhatan Creek Trail 5K, 18:35 to 19:02. He also secured two other races defeating qualifiers and pulls away in the MRF, 42 to 31. One of the victories was

Seventh ranked Paul Titus won his first half marathon out right at the Jackson River Trail Half Marathon in 1:29:02. Fourth ranked Jeff Harrington would be top master at the Percival’s Island Five Miler in 30:58. With much surprise, it was the only 5-miler among qualifiers. Then on a mid-October Saturday, the two met at the Danville Half Marathon. Harrington prevailed as top master in 1:23:55. Titus followed him home in 1:27:34. The next day our champion, Matt Boyd powered home exactly two minutes ahead of sixth ranked Craig Chasse at the 10K Run Through History in 36:53. He also topped eleventh ranked Brad Rippey at the Devil's Den 10M, 1:03:45 to 1:09:05.

Already in December (Pandemic II) Boyd briefly owned the Best of 2020 half marathon, running the Blue and Gray Holiday Half Marathon in 1:22:07. Minutes later the results for the Holiday Half Marathon appeared with Alexander Hetherington snatching the lead away with an overall win in 1:22:06.

In a close battle for the runner-up spot, the lean goes to Dennis Billings with an overall win and a second overall placement in his three races. His best event was the Run 4 Fredericksburg 4M in 23:40. Harmon was fast, racing the Lorton Station Veterans 5K in 18:06, However, he was third as the two fastest times from 55-59 runners topped him in the race with 10-year age groups. Fifth ranked Tom Yinger ran both of his 5Ks on the seventh of a month. This year’s Terry Burk 5K is the fifth different course in the last ten years and perhaps the flattest. That is not to say the fastest as in past years the course started atop a hill and was a bit net downhill, albeit with some pace-changing hills. Yinger triumphed in 18:31 as the second overall finisher.

With no Jeff Duyn this year, maybe Mark Neff would not have to be looking over his shoulder to defend another crown. He paced himself for a win with a solid Fall Burke Lake 5K in 18:18. Still, runner-up Edward Dickerson was mighty close, winning at the Health Focus of SW Virginia Salem 5K in 18:22. Third ranked Steven Kast presented his best of two sub-19-minute 5Ks at the Queen's Lake 5K in 18:29, well ahead of seventh ranked Jon Leiding (19:29). Neff had already beaten compatriot, fourth ranked Paul Jacobson at the Germantown 5M, 30:54 to 34:10. He was going to need more to solidify the title. On the first week of November, while Dickenson was finishing second overall at the Apple Valley 5K in 19:27, Neff put away Jacobson’s best effort at the Lorton Station Veterans 5K, 17:53 to 19:37. His race was about catching Pete Wergin’s début into the division and he fell just short of Wergin’s 17:46. Watch this division tighten up in 2021.

Timothy Coady squeezed into sixth place with his last race in the division, the St. Patrick's Day 5K in 19:56. Fifth ranked Paul Pelletier bolted home with a fine 19:46 at the Powhatan Creek Trail 5K. Eighth ranked John Way racked up seven wins and rejoined the rankings upon entering the new division. His best effort thus far was the Terry Burk 5K in 20:14, though for Pandemic II he has already produce a sub 20:00 5K.

Virginia Regional Ballet 5K 18:53, 10K = 39:23

Just as with last spring, the Virginia Regional Ballet 5K decided the division crown. This year it was Robert Whitaker in a brilliant 18:53 ahead of runner-up Rick Samaha (19:43). On our nation’s birthday Whitaker again had his measure at the 5K for Mental Health, 19:15 to 20:09. Still, it would not be prudent to count Samaha out as he took down Whitaker (20:04) and last spring’s champion Stephen Chantry (20:15) at the Queen's Lake 5K with his best of nine wins in 19:29. Fourth ranked John Chall was the overall winner at the tiny Barlowe Bolt 5K in 20:19. Timothy Coady slips in front of him with a nifty Love thy Neighbor 5K in 20:15. Coady confirms his third place with a Great Goblin Gallop 5K in 20:28 while Chall added another win at the Bel Air Town Run 5K in 20:50.

Terry McLaughlin was an elite racer early in his career. However, injuries kept him from serious racing for much of his fifties. Now sixty, it is as if he were never away. Perhaps it is the hundreds of middle-distance track races he ran this year. He earns fifth place racing the FARC Fall Track 5K in 20:23. He also added the Halloween 5K in 20:40 just ahead of sixth place Preston Evans who boasted a 20:42 at a different holiday earlier in the season, the St. Patrick's Day 5K. Seventh place Mark Drosky came out twice for the cult Bishop Tuesday Night 5K, doing best on his second try with 20:55. Ninth ranked Bill Stahr somehow found more than a hundred races to run, many of them Bishop events. He earns his spot with his fastest of twenty-seven 10Ks for the year, the Lorton Station Veterans 10K in 46:37. Will Murray purloins eighth place from Stahr with his 22:16 at the Queen's Lake 5K.

Then Labor Day weekend he laid down the hammer at the Run the D.O.G. 5K in a brilliant 18:59, brushing aside a solid 21:16 performance by runner-up Richard Grant. He ended October, easing back to a solid 20:15 victory at the Queen's Lake 5K, ahead of fourth ranked Jim Duffy (22:07). Grant would prevail over Duffy at the Logy Bear 8K, 36:49 to 38:34. There was even more disparity when Grant prevailed at the Dismal Swamp 5M, 35:00 to 41:14.

Fifth ranked Eugene Myers did well at the Germantown 5M (37:24) but his second qualifier at the Highlands School 5K, though a win, was 23:02. Vic Barthelemy started slower at the Devil’s Den 10M in 1:20:19. Then in October he bolted forward at the 10K Run Through History in 45:42. Rick Hower tuned into a couple Bishop Tuesday Night 5Ks, he best was besting eighth ranked Neal Riemenschneider, 23:35 to 24:57 to take sixth place. More than half of the races run were raced by a runner hailing from Williamsburg or who at least was racing there. Dale Abrahamson (23:33) led a quintet of qualifiers at the rescheduled Queen's Lake 5K to end October. But he never got in a second event. Runner-up Rick Platt, who took ownership of five of the top eight races, crossed the finish line second in 24:47. Even sixth place Jimmy Blount (26:36) edged out our eventual champion John DiCarlo (26:37). Seventh place Ed Irish was not far back in 27:03. DiCarlo got things underway first winning the Virginia Regional Ballet 5K in 25:06. The following month he took the title defeating fifth ranked Joseph Verdirame at the Mel Williams Memorial Scholarship 5K, 24:34 to 26:18.

Bobby Woodfin slips into third, racing the TCRR Race for the Cause 5K in 25:29, ahead of fourth ranked Ronald Thompson (28:29). Five months earlier of the first weekend of Pandemic I, Thompson ran a credible 43:25 at the White Bank Classic 5 Miler. Masters racer Jana Fridrichova, though she did not win her own division is the only runner from another division to crash the Elite division. She won the Greg Shank Marathon in 3:09:15. Back to the third place, one of Sophia King’s two overall wins was the TCRR Race for the Cause 5K in 18:56.

Thirty-two other racers had a single qualifier, while three more had two qualifiers in their division but only ran one fast enough to make the Elite division.

Perhaps not a surprise, the teen division is by far the largest. There were a ton of fast times at the FAB 5K as always. Runner-up Addison Shorter was third overall there in 19:29 ahead of third ranked Jessica Palisca (20:38) and ninth ranked Priscilla Keller (21:46). Our champion Carly Wilkes won that race decisively in an open class 18:40. Palisca would add an overall win at the Apple Valley 5K in 20:48 just ahead of the 20:52 run by Wilkes at the Camp Bethel Pep 5K. Shorter was second overall at the Eagle Strut 5K in 21:13, ahead of seventh ranked Caitlyn Roach (22:52). A month later, Roach earned her placement by knocking off more than a minute and winning it all at the Health Focus of SW Virginia Salem 5K in 22:23.

Fourth ranked Soreena Jean squeezes in front of fifth ranked Eleanor McNichols with her second overall at the 5K for Mental Health in 20:42. McNichols was second overall at the Fort Hunt 5K in 20:45, one place ahead of sixth ranked Bowie Gentry who ran 21:08. Gentry was a little better winning it all at the Vets on Track 5K in 20:52. Eighth ranked Ellie Bowman was best winning it all at the Moonlight 5K in 21:27.

Julia Roman-Duval may have missed out on her last chance for another division crown. She only ran one event on the last weekend of the extended Pandemic I season. It was a marvelous overall win at the difficult Run through the Grapevine 8K in 33:39. That time was only the sixth best race among the one race runners. But the storm of Keira D’Amato, 36, is more than on the horizon. All D’Amato needs to clinch the open title (as well) is a second qualifier to bookend her world class 51:23 at the Up Dawg 10M. D’Amato ran two Olympic-class 5Ks in a phenomenal sub 15:10 earlier in the year were out of area and in a track time trial!

Of the two qualifiers, Megan Shultz wins easily with the four best races. She ran for two overall wins, including the Virginia Regional Ballet 5K in 19:41. Runner-up Cat Leonard is the one you have to beat at the Bishop Events races if you want to win. That does not happen often as she was first in five of her six races. The Fort Hunt 10K in 43:33 was her best of five 10Ks.

Labor Day Rogue 5K 19:13, 10K = 40:01

Sherry Stick is usually very active racing but most of her usual races turned virtual. So, after having a division leading overall victory in 19:13 at the Labor Day Rogue 5K, the question became would she find another live race to compete in. On the last weekend, the arduous Run through the Grapevine 8K fulfilled that need. The race is always special and a lot of fun but it is not a fast race. Cross-country is nearly always slower than the roads and Grapevine is one of the more challenging of that genre. She did finish a very respectable 35:58 for second overall, the slowest race among qualifiers. By comparison, Rachel Wheeler Northup won her only race out right, the White Bank Classic 5 Miler in 31:59.

Runner-up Jana Fridrichova was second overall at the Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler in 32:34. While the canal has less than ideal traction, it is

virtually flat. Fridrichova also won the Greg Shank Marathon outright in an open class 3:09:15. That adds a little reminder that Stick will not be able to rest on her laurels in the coming season. Third ranked Jenny Moran also ran the 5M at the Dismal Swamp in 33:03. Even on a flat course, it shows she has the goods to challenge. She never finishes worse than masters winner, adding three very nice 5Ks. She was best at the Run the D.O.G. 5K as second overall in 19:55.

Fourth ranked Tracy Dzibela was best at the 10K, finishing the 10K Run Through History as overall victor in 44:04, exactly a minute faster than Stick’s second-best race, also an overall win, the Run 4 Kids 10K.

Stacey Esposito moved up from the sixth fastest race in July at the Moonlight 5K (21:36) to win it all at the Cats and Bats 5K in 20:30. Her best half was an overall win at the Carderock Charge Half Marathon in 1:41:45. Runner-up Carol David took the long road as well, finishing second overall at the 10K Run Through History in 45:37 in October. Two months earlier, she ran the Devil's Den 10M in 1:17:40. Their races were often very close and Byerley who recorded the fastest race among qualifiers at the Lorton Station Veterans 5K in 25:22, also produced four of the top seven times overall. Both ladies collected overall wins and combined for more than fifty races. Mayhugh was best at the Summer Strides 5K in 25:29, ahead of sixth ranked Liza Recto (27:38). Her best win against Byerley came at the Columbia Island 5K, 25:33 to 25:52.

Worthington poured it on besting Travis 29:10) and Gullo (30:45) at the Queen's Lake 5K as October waned. The always prolific Travis won all ten of her other events. That was just enough juice to break the tie with fourth ranked Christie Wamsley who ran the TCRR Race for the Cause 5K in 29:10. Wamsley won her only other event the Delightfully Different 3.5M in 35:18.

For nearly the whole season it looked as if the relentless Jeannette Novak would go it entirely alone. After booking 200 races in 2019, she was not going to let anything stand in her way to racing. Even after halting form mid-march to near the end of June, she still found forty-five events to test out. She was tops in her age group in 28 of them. Last spring’s champion, Karen Kautz, waited until the last weekend to get a single qualifier, her Run through the Grapevine 8K on the decidedly hilly cross-country event in 1:12:16. Novak had three races faster than that, earning her first crown with the Spooky 5K in 43:13. During the impaired year of racing, she is still on pace to complete more than sixty 5K races.

Rankings Explained - What It Is, Who Does It, How We Do It, and Where We are Going

The goal of the runner rankings is to rank the best runners of Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, in five-year age groups, for the purpose of stimulating competition in the Washington region. Runners are ranked only according to performances in rated races. To be rated, a race must meet the following criteria:

* Take place in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia* Full results listed on the Web Site* Must list age (and preferably also city and state of residence) of all runners* Standard distance--5K, 4M, 8K, 5M, 10K, 12K, 15K, 10M, 20K, 1/2 Marathon, 25K, 30K, 20M, or Marathon* Road race or cross-country * Gun Time

To be included, a race must meet all of the above criteria. There will be no exceptions. If you place well in a race and want it included in the rankings, be sure to ask the race director to e-mail the complete results to us at [email protected] so that the race can be counted in the runner rankings.

Sometimes runners are confused by the race tracking terms. Chip time simply means that it was electronically timed, not manually. Gun time is the official time. Net time, which is confused with chip time, is merely a feel good time which is tracked by when the runner’s chip first crosses the starting line. Net time will always be faster than the official gun time. Runners are welcome to note net time for their personal use but it has no place in the rankings. In large races, where it is impossible for runners to get to the start for many minutes after the official gun start, we do allow a net time to count as one of the necessary two qualifiers to get a runner to be evaluated. However, that time and any net based age award placement in that race does NOT count towards their placement in the rankings.

Runners will be ranked by age divisions for both men and women, with the divisions being open, 19 & younger, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, and 90 & older.

The rankings are established using a nearly completely objective rating procedure. A preliminary sort, followed by an intensive analysis of competitive results, forms the rankings. The preliminary sort is based on the number of qualifying marks and best times. The final ranking is based on head-to-head competitive results against the other top placers (fifty percent), with time playing a major but secondary role (forty percent). Our general philosophy is that competition is about beating other runners and we intend to place an increased emphasis on competitive results.

To qualify for the end-of-year rankings, runner must run two qualifying races each in each of at least two of the four ranking periods. A runner can qualify for two different age groups in a year. As with the individual seasons, a runner can use a qualifying race from the elder division if it is fast enough to help qualify them for the younger division. Thus, the minimum number of races two double dip and qualify for two divisions would be six races. For example, a 60-64 runner run a qualifying race twice in the winter or spring and then turns sixty-five after the winter and/or the two 60-64 qualifying races in the spring and qualifies for two of the next three seasons with times fast enough for qualification in the 60-64 division. A preliminary sort, followed by a more involved analysis of competitive results, also forms these rankings. The preliminary sort is based on seasonal rankings and best times. The final ranking is again based on head-to-head competitive results, with time playing a secondary role, though at times a deciding role. One special race can at times put a runner over the top, though consistency is a valued asset. I have devised the Moreland Racing Factor to help in deciding close contests.

Qualifying times are set in each age division for the 10K, and then adjusted for other distances. I believe in a constant time so that, while a runner may not make the top ten, he or she may consider himself or herself a ranked runner. My primary concern is that of believability. There should be few surprises. Competitiveness will always find a few disputes. Most runners know who they can best and who remains unbeatable. The rankings should fairly reflect that. If you have comments and questions or would like to receive a more complete explanation of individual rankings contact me at [email protected].
