Born a child and yet a King.

Born to reign in us forever,

Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.

By Thine own eternal Spirit

Rule in all our hearts alone.

By Thine all sufficient merit

Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

Last Sunday we lit the first candle in our Advent Wreath, the candle of HOPE. We light it again as we remember that Christ will come again to fulfill all of God's promises to us. LIGHT THE FIRST CANDLE

The second candle of Advent is the Candle of Peace. It is sometimes called the Bethlehem Candle to remind us of the humble place where the Christ child was born.

Peace is a gift that we must be prepared for. God gives us the gift of peace when we turn to him in faith. The prophet Isaiah calls Christ "the Prince of Peace." Through the prophets, God asks us to prepare our hearts so that he may come in.

Our hope is in God, and in his son Jesus Christ. Our peace is only found in him. We light this candle today to remind us that he brings peace to all who trust in him.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of Might,

Who to Thy tribes on Sinai’s height

In ancient times didst give the law

In cloud and majesty and awe.

O come, Thou Branch of Jesse’s tree,

Free them from satan's tyranny

That trust Thy mighty power to save,

And give them vict’ry o’er the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Blessed Lord, who has caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which Your Son, Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when He shall come again in His glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through Him who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen.

Romans 15:1-13 4 For whatever was written in former days was written

for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name." 10 And again it is said, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people." 11 And again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him." 12 And again Isaiah says, "The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope." 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Reader:

The Deacon’s Mass is also called the “Liturgy of the Word and Holy Communion.” This mass is performed by an ordained deacon, with reserve sacrament previously blessed by a priest. This service became popular during the later part of the twentieth century after the Deacon’s Mass was published in the 1979 BCP. In Emmanuel’s case, this liturgy is useful as an interim measure for our congregation in the absence of a priest, or until Deacon Daniel is ordained to the priesthood in the coming year.

On Jordan’s bank, the Baptist’s cry

Announces that the Lord is nigh;

Awake and hearken for he brings

Glad tidings of the King of kings.

Then cleansed be every breast from sin;

Make straight the way for God within,

And let each heart prepare a home

Where such a mighty guest may come.

For Thou art our salvation, Lord,

Our refuge, and our great reward;

Without Thy grace we waste away

Like flowers that wither and decay.

To heal the sick stretch out Thine hand,

And bid the fallen sinner stand;

Shine forth, and let Thy light restore

Earth’s own true loveliness once more.

And Holy Spirit evermore.

NOTES:

ADVENT, AS WELL AS LENT, IS A PENITENTIAL SEASON, SO WE FOREGO THE HALLELUJAH & THE GLORIA PATRI (after the Psalm)

Traditionally, the Collect for the first week of Advent is repeated after collect for the second week is read, and so forth.

ALSO – in Lent the Collect for Ash Wednesday is repeated in the same manner as is the Collect for Advent.
