PROTECTING OUR YOUTH

Parents who want to raise their children to have a healthy view of sexuality and to respect their own and others’ bodies and minds must prepare them to confront negative images, videos and messages which they will encounter on their smartphones, computers, tablets and other electronic devices. There was a time not so long ago when parents could protect their children from exposure to shows or movies which were inappropriate for their age level by changing the channel on the television or turning it off after a certain hour. No more. Their smartphone or I-pad gives them 24-7 easy access to a virtual cesspool of content. Worse, it gives pornographers and others who do not have their best interests in mind easy ac-cess to them.

The statistics are horrifying. In 2007 Family Safe Media reported that the average age of a child’s

first exposure to pornography is 11 and 83% of 15 – 17 years old had multiple exposures to hard core por-nography. More recent studies reveal even worse results. Just like adults, sometimes minors intentionally seek out the images, and sometimes they come across them by accident. Even innocent searches can lead to pornographic websites whose link is intentionally misleading by their webmasters. Remember, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Pet 5:8). Pornog-raphers have a vested interest in recruiting young people to their product because they will become future customers. With their new freedom from parental supervision, many college males quickly fall into a habit and even addiction to pornography. Unfortunately, its use by females has been increasing in the last dec-ade. Therapists tell us that porn is no longer just a male obsession. We need to prepare all of our young people to confront this challenge.

It is difficult and perhaps scary to think about what I am addressing, but it is something that respon-

sible parents and other caretakers of minors must deal with. All the experts who study this issue agree that your child will see pornographic and/or graphically violent content, even if you install filters, monitor their cell phones and other devices, limit their time on social media, and take every step to protect them (which, of course, is an absolute must). You are not sitting next to them when they ride the bus to school or hang out with friends, some of whom do not have parents that monitor their messages and internet searches. The issue is not - will your children see these things? But rather, when will they see them, and how will they deal with it when they do? Here is where your prior preparation and formation of your chil-dren can help them to deal with the challenge to their personal integrity and wellness.

The fact that someone, adult or child, is curious about sex or is attracted to a titillating picture of

someone of the opposite sex, or even of their own sex, does not mean that he or she is dirty, immoral, weird or perverted. It means they are like other human beings. If you find that your son or daughter has looked at things they should not have seen, do not freak out! Talk about it in a calm manner. Help them to process what they saw and understand why it is not appropriate to view. Our parish wants to help you to speak to your children in an age-appropriate way. It has always been difficult for parents to speak with their children about the birds and the bees, and this subject is so much more challenging. Parents need to support each other in this matter and remind each other to be vigilant. Be proactive! You can help your child avoid a lot of hurt and confusion if you prepare them beforehand. Please consider coming to the nextTalk presentation in the Parish Center (gym) next Saturday morning, January 25th at 10 am. You will be given practical advice and tools to help you guide your children and prepare them for the chal-lenges to their personal integrity and safety which they will encounter in the cybersphere. You will find more information on this two-hour event elsewhere in this bulletin.

An additional resource: For more information and a Catholic approach to the issue of internet por-nography and addiction, I highly recommend Dr. Peter C. Kleponis, Ph.D. who can be reached at www.integrityrestored.com. There you will find help for married couples, individuals, and parents.

Live the Liturgy Inspiration for the Week

Our relationships ground and define us. Understanding

where we come from, who matters to us, and to whom

we have an allegiance all frame and direct our lives.

One unchangeable about who we are is that God

formed us in our mother’s womb. Unless

understanding of ourselves begins with this solid fact

about ourselves, our knowledge will always be

incomplete. John the Baptist and Jesus knew who they

were and where they came from. This allowed them to

understand their purpose and express their identity. To

whom do you matter? If your primary answer is God

then you are on your way to knowing who you are.

Each of us has a purpose and mission to fulfill. See

God as your strength and get about the business of

meeting life’s challenges.

Our 2019-2020 fiscal year budget has been adjusted to reflect recent historical income numbers. This fiscal year our income goal is $722,000 for the Offertory collection. Through January 12, 2020, our income is 3.4% greater than that antici-pated in the budget. Keep up the good work. Some parishioners have increased their donation. If you are able, please consider joining them. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is eighteen years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and operating costs need to be addressed. You have demon-strated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

The Appeal is support-ing continuing operations of the Parish. The first $150,000 will go to balance the parish budget; the remainder will go to-ward the emergency fund for unbudget-ed, major expenses for the church; e.g., the ultimate replacement of the church roof. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collec-tion basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office. You may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation.

Saints this week

January 20th: Saint Sebastian was a military officer in Rome under Diocletian. He died as a martyr in 288 by being pierced by arrows, and later clubbed to death. He was buried on the Appian Way, close to the catacombs that bear his name. He is the patron of archers, soldiers, and police associations.

January 21st: Saint Agnes was martyred in the beginning of the 4th century under Emperor Diocletian at the age of 12. She is the patroness of Christian virtue confronted by political and social vio-lence. She is frequently represented with a martyr’s palm and a lamb.

January 23rd: Saint Marianne Cope, a religious of the Sisters of St. Francis, was known for her charitable works and virtuous deeds. For 35 years she cared for the lepers on the Hawaiian island of Moloka’i. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012.

January 24th: Saint Francis de Sales, Bishop of Geneva, sought to bring many back to the Church through his personal life and writings, especially Controversies and Introduction to the Devout Life. He is the co-founder with St. Jane Frances de Chantal of the Visitation Order. Saint Francis de Sales is the patron of writers, journalists and the deaf.

January 25th: The Conversion of Saint Paul, the Apostle. Saint Paul is one of the most important and influential of all the saints. This feast day celebrates his conversion and powerful vision of Jesus Christ that caused him to convert to Christianity while on the road to Damascus. Paul then becomes the apostle sent to proclaim the Gospel to all nations.
