22 @ Barcelona History
FROM 1700 TO 1860: BACKGROUNDS San MarLn de Provenzales was a stand-‐alone municipality of Barcelona unRl 1897, when it was added to the Barcelonés town council, together with Sans, Gracia, las Corts, San Gervasio and San Andrés, which also took their jurisdicRonal autonomy.
FROM 1860 TO 1960: THE CATALAN MANCHESTER The passing of the first Spanish railway through San MarLn, from 1848, was one of the main causes for the industrial increase of the area. Between 1855 and 1888, the register of factories recorded an increase from 57 to 243. On the borderline between the 19th and 20th Century, San MarLn is nicknamed the "Catalan Manchester" due to its important industrializaRon and poliRcally acRve mentality of its populaRon.
FROM 1960 TO 1986: INDUSTRIAL DESERTION The central years of the 1960's can be considered as the beginning of the de-‐industrializaRon of Poblenou. The emergence of the Zona Franca as a new centre of industrial acRvity, with a new locaRon of the industrial acRvity in Barcelona, involved a significant blow to Poblenou. It is important to menRon that, between 1963 and 1990, Poblenou lost more than 1.300 factories.

22 @ Barcelona History
FROM 1986 TO 1999: PROGRESSIVE REFURBISHMENT The recovery of Poblenou started off with the intervenRons carried out around the Olympic Games. Due to this celebraRon, the ring roads of Barcelona were built, providing Poblenou with an excellent link to the metropolitan area, the port and airport; the beaches were turned into urban ground and the Vila Olímpica was built up, consRtuRng the first residenRal neighbourhood of Barcelona coastline.
FROM 2000: 22@BARCELONA PROJECT 22@Barcelona Project reinterprets the funcRon of the old industrial fabric of Poblenou and creates a new model of urban space that subsRtutes the old 22a urban classificaRon, that established an exclusively industrial use for these areas of the centre of the city, by a new 22@, that enables the coexistence of all non-‐disturbing or non-‐pollu;ng produc;ve ac;vi;es and normalizes the presence of the social housing affected since 1953, facilitaRng its restoraRon. Thus 22@ Project is permit to recover the producRve vocaRon of the old economic hub of the city of Barcelona in order to create a new model of urban space according to the needs of the current knowledge-‐based society.

“District 22@”. It is worth menRoning that the 22nd is the code that signifies urban areas engaged in heavy industry in the Metropolitan General Plan. 22@ expresses new avenues of acRvity responsible for the transformaRon of the area.
22@ is now—and as a result of its history—a blend of zones and structures arranged to meet a mulRplicity of uses. Through a broad paleme of materials and fluid architecture, we come to realize the idea of an urban landscape on which we can propose the integraRon of new buildings and a new way of being present in the city.
