The definition of ATV is self explainer thatwhy suspension is an undisputed part of it.All Terrain Vehicle means the need of a

strong, dependable and intelligentsuspension system. As the automotiveworld is advancing in the technology, moreand more new designs and options arenow available to meet the requirements ofa perfectly stable on road ATV.

It is a Multi Link Suspension type systemwhich uses 5 links or arms.

These arms do not have to be of equallength and may be angled away from theirobvious direction.

Typically each arm has a spherical joint

(ball joint) or rubber bushing at each end.

Consequently they react to loads along

their own length, in tension andcompression, but not in bending.

Some multi-links do use a trailing arm or

wishbone, which has two bushings at oneend.

On a front suspension one of the lateral

arms is replaced by the tie-rod, whichconnects the rack or steering box to thewheel hub.

All the leading car manufactures today areusing this suspension in their off roaders and

SUVs because of there advantages over

conventional suspension system. The reasons for the worldwide acceptance of

5-arm trailing suspension system areA superior independent suspension system

Uses several short links to attach hub carrierto body

    Provides consistent handling and traction

This kind of suspension allows the

auto designer the ability toincorporate both good ride and

good handling in the same vehicle. The arms react to traction and

braking loads, usually accomplishedvia a longitudinal link which give the

rider a better grip on the surface athigh acceleration without any slip

    Every vehicle when experience

any jump, its camber angle shifts. So while landing if the camber

angle is distorted, can causeproblems such as uneven tyrewear or even the breakage of

    axle in some conditions.

The arms control camber, particularly the way that the

camber changes as the wheelmoves up (into jounce, or bump)and down into rebound or droop. In 5-Link trailing arm suspension

system this problem is solved upto a limit as they are self

adjustable because of theirorthogonal design pattern.

    This suspension system offers

better traction which is one of theindispensable part of the ATV.

On sharp turns and highaccelerations it offers good stability

and road grip to the vehicle.Making it easy to drive even at the

most harsh terrains and throughsharp corners.

This type of suspension allows the

vehicle to flex more; this meanssimply that the suspension is able tomove more easily to conform to the

varying angles of off-road driving.Consequently this type of

suspension react to loads along the

length of their own arms, in tensionand compression, but not in bending.

Means independent of the loadwhich the vehicle is carrying, it will

still provide better handling andstability during turns, jumps and

    droops.

Quite hard to believe that this kind of thingcan really have some disadvantages butthere are some

Multilink suspension is complex in design. It is also difficult to tune the geometry without

a full 3D computer aided design analysis.Compliance under load can have an

important effect and must be checked using

a multibody simulation software. The parts employed are quite heavy which is

a drawback when employed in an ATV.
