My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

During this month of October, of RESPECT LIFE, we also celebrate WORLD MISSION SUNDAY. All of these calls are not disconnected. On the contrary, there are profound connections, because the very Mission of Jesus and His Church is to promote and foster and nourish and nurture LIFE, in all its beautiful and different forms!

Four years ago, Pope Francis initiated a way of connecting with one another and our mission. The Catholic Church, through the Pontifical Mission Societies, supports a global network of people working on the frontline of service for the world’s most vulnerable communities. Every year, though, the need outstrips our ability to help. Through MISSIO, projects that might otherwise remain un- or under-funded, can now be showcased via a digital platform, thereby expanding the network of potential supporters beyond the doors of a church, school or parish.

Pope Francis launched the first version of the Pontifical Mission Societies’ MISSIO as a mobile app in 2013, which offered news from the Mission Church. In 2015, during the Pope’s visit to the United States, the Pontifical Mission Societies updated this app to allow users to connect directly with mission project leaders overseas. Then last year, a web version of MISSIO – MISSIO.org – was launched on World Mission Sunday 2016. MISSIO.org is a crowdfunding platform, expanding the ability to fund a project or venture by raising small amounts of money from a large number of people, via the Internet/social media. All MISSIO projects are affiliated with the local Church or with a local Religious institution (seminary, convent, school) in the Missions, and these projects are vetted by the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States and reviewed by the Ordinaries of those (arch)dioceses in which the projects are located. 100% of the funds donated to MISSIO go directly to projects/project leaders. MISSIO is a transparent, trusted and effective means of supporting mission projects overseas.

In addition, MISSIO USA created MissioBot, a FACEBOOK MESSENGER CHATBOT. MissioBot – aka the “Pope Bot” – is part of a new generation of digital technology called ChatBots, which are creative computer programs designed to simulate conversation with users in text message platforms. Inspired by what the Pope has written and said about his missions, MissioBot was created to provide a one-to-one experience of information, engagement, and accompaniment that guides the user through a conversation about the life-saving work of Catholic missionaries around the world. MissioBot provides a way for those digitally connected, especially younger Catholics, to learn from and encounter Pope Francis, specifically about mission, the heart of our faith. Through a conversation on Facebook Messenger, MissioBot introduces real missionaries and the communities they serve, and motivates participants to act on behalf of our brothers and sisters in need. Available in both English and Spanish, this MissioBot is the newest entry point into a place of encounter for anyone and everyone seeking to support Catholic missionaries.

This year, Pope Francis has a beautiful reflection for our motivation to become the missionary disciples we are called to be by Jesus and His Church (see https://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/missions/documents/papa-francesco_20170604_giornata-missionaria2017.html). He writes, “World Mission Day gathers us around the person of Jesus, ‘the very first and greatest evangelizer’ (Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi, 7), who continually sends us forth to proclaim the Gospel of the love of God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. This Day invites us to reflect anew on the mission at the heart of the Christian faith. The Church is missionary by nature; otherwise, she would no longer be the Church of Christ, but one group among many others that soon end up serving their purpose and passing away…. What is the heart of our mission?” He answers by quoting Pope Paul VI, Jesus’ “resurrection is not an event of the past; it contains a vital power which has permeated this world. Where all seems to be dead, signs of the resurrection suddenly spring up. It is an irresistible force” (Evangelii Gaudium, 276). Pope Francis adds, “ ...Young people are the hope of mission.”

Let us all, young and old, share the Good News with joy and hope! Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!!!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Although the rainy and cold day drove us to pray in church, nevertheless a beautiful group of people led by our own Deacon Jesse in prayer came on Saturday, October 14th, at noon to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fatima by offering a rosary for the intentions of our Holy Mother Mary and for any personal intentions we brought to Her Immaculate Heart. Our Lady of Fatima, our Mother Mary, pray for us all, your beloved children!

Through the hard work of the CCW organization at St. Andrews Parish this past year, we were able to do many good works for our church, school, and community. Through our raffles and bake sales we were able to give a monetary donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation which is a childhood Cancer Research Foundation. We also purchased and accepted donations of Christmas Cards, which we write out with words of encouragement and send to soldiers overseas to let them know they are not forgotten. The following monetary donations were also made: St. Andrews Blood Drive for carafes for juice and food for the blood donors St. Andrews School for repair of school alarms and other needed repairs St. Andrew School Athletic Department to purchase a volleyball net and football jerseys Our Harvest Saturday Food Drive Through your continued support we can do many wonderful things for our parish, school, and community. To all the women of the parish, please feel free to join us at our next meeting on November 15th at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall. If you would like to join sooner, we will welcome help at the Fall Bake Sale and Raffle which is being held November 11th and 12th.

Our sincere appreciation is sent to all. Without your help this worthwhile service organization could not exist.

Please call Sheryl Meyer 815-735-1535 or Lisa Heil 815-886-1396 for more information.

For many years, Priests for Life has collaborated with Heartbeat International, Good Counsel Homes, and other similar service organizations to promote awareness of alternatives to abortion and healing after abortion. Sometimes these alternatives simply consist in a listening ear and encouraging word; or else they meet wider needs like counseling, a place to stay, medical services, legal advice, adoption services, parenting classes, guidance in seeking employment and more. Counseling for those suffering from a past abortion is also provided by many pregnancy centers and other ministries.

Ever wonder why we Pray the Rosary before Family Catechesis? In various apparitions, Mary has appeared holding a rosary and has asked that we continue to pray this prayer. She always leads us to her Son, and presents our needs before Him. Prayer is about developing our relationship with God, and loving Him more, so it makes sense to get to know Him through the events of the life of Christ that we meditate on during the rosary. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: ‘Medita on engages thought, imagina on, emo on, and desire.

This mobiliza on of facul es is necessary in order to deepen our convic ons of faith, prompt the conver-sion of our heart, and strengthen our will to follow Christ. Chris an prayer tries above all to meditate on the mysteries of Christ, as in lec o divina or the rosary. This form of prayerful reflec on is of great value, but Chris an prayer should go further to the knowledge of the love of the Lord Jesus, to union with him’ (CCC 2708).

Rosaries are not just decorations. Battles have been won because people prayed the rosary! There have been hearts converted, and impossible intentions answered too.

Legion of Mary News

The month of October is the month of the Most Holy Rosary. What better way to honor our Blessed Mother than by praying the rosary on a daily basis. Our Legion of Mary is encouraging everyone to join the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary which has several benefits as well as Rosary Indulgences. What is this confraternity? The Rosary Confraternity of the Catholic Church is a spiritual association. The members of which strive to pray the entire Rosary during the course of each week. They form a union of countless hundreds of thousands of the faithful throughout the world who, along with their own intentions, include the intentions and needs of all other members of the Rosary Confraternity both living and dead. For more information, please pick up a flyer at the back of the church or you can visit their website at www.rosary-center.org. You can join on-line or by sending in your application, which is included in the flyer, via mail.

ALL SOULS DAY

All Souls Day is Thursday, November 2nd. At 7:00 PM a Mass will be celebrated to remember and pray for all the faithful departed. A Litany of names of those who have been buried from St. Andrew the Apostle will be sung as a candle is lit for each soul. This is always a beautiful Mass and everyone is invited to attend. At the back of church is The Book of the Dead. Write the name of your deceased loved ones in the book. This book will be placed on the altar during the All Souls Mass and all through the month of November and we will pray for them all. Beginning October 22nd, you may bring in a small picture of your deceased loved ones and place it on the table set up in church to the left of the altar.

Jesus, remember me, when you

come into Your Kingdom.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 x301 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, (815) 886-4165 ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
