29. Small things make a big difference
Introduce to the pupils by . . .
• Discussing how the items on display might make a difference, e.g., one candle gives a small light but when the light is passed to more candles there is a difference in what we can see, etc.
• Talking about Mother Teresa’s work in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta).
Background information for teachers
Pupils will reflect on the difference they can make by taking actions, however small, for the good of those around them and those far away. Mother Teresa, when speaking about her work in India, said, “What we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But if that drop was not in the ocean, I think the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.’”
Resources
• A collection of small things that potentially make a big difference, e.g., acorn or other seed, perfume in a small bottle, screw, nail, safety pin, needle, collecting box for charity, selection of candles, salt, yeast, spices, egg, tea-bags, batteries, fridge-magnet, pencil or pen, etc.
• A large piece of blotting paper, blue paint/ink and a means to apply single drops such as a straw or dropper (alternatively give each child their own piece of blotting paper and use a variety of colours)
• Photo of Mother Teresa, and her words as above
What will the pupils do? • Bring items to add to the display. • Each child adds a few drops of colouring to the
blotting paper, spreading it by drops of water (the teacher may wish to supervise this as a class activity).
Summarise • Talk about the change that has occurred on the
blotting paper. • Talk about new items that have been added to
the display. • Talk about how small actions have made a
difference within the pupils’ experience, e.g., giving to charity, recycling.
• Discuss the ways in which they feel they can make a difference, at home, school and in the wider community.
• Read the story that Jesus told about the widow who gave to God the very few coins that she had. (Luke 21 – The Lion Storyteller Bible, page 134) and/or the rhyme, ‘For want of a nail, the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe, the horse was lost; for want of a horse, the rider was lost; for want of a rider, the battle was lost; for want of a battle, the kingdom was lost; and all for the want of a horseshoe nail.’
