The Nelson City Council is to be commended for admitting it real-ises we are living in tough economic times but one wonders if these are re-ally weasel words when we see in the draft annual plan a proposal to spend almost $60 million on Arts and Con-ference Centres, both of which are destined to be financial nightmares. For starters, no arts centre in NZ makes a profit, and Nelson is not on the major conference circuit and will never be until Air NZ stops ripping us off with its excessive “no competi-tion” fares. There are accommodation shortages. The Berl and Shand reports both show the limitations Nelson has but our council is hell bent on bankrupt-ing the city to build its monuments to stupidity.Andrew Talley gave us some disturb-ing statistics, three percent of NZ conferences seat over 500 persons, a further seven percent have 250-500,

average NZ Conference 180-250 per-sons, and our knowledgeable Coun-cil wants to build a facility to cater for up to 700 persons. Talk about ‘pie in the sky’ stuff.I challenge the NCC to provide the facts (all of them) and conduct a poll, as mayor Miccio promised at election time. That’s true democracy.Errol Millar,Nelson.

I’d like to congratulate the Nelson Weekly on the eye-catching photo and lively piece on Nelson College Prep’s victory in the recent Kids’ Lit Quiz, which promotes and celebrates the sport of reading. opportunity, the question now is what is the right public amenity that we would want to put in the area.”Whether or not those amenities include a con-ference centre will largely be down to the Tal-ley-owned Rutherford Holdings. Aldo says if council gets certainty that a private centre will go ahead, and it meets criteria council would

like to see in a facility of its type, it is likely to not “get involved in that game” and scratch plans for its own conference centre. The draft annual plan is available on the Nelson City Council website. It is up for discussion this Saturday from 9am to 1pm at the Nelson Mar-ket, from 9am to 12pm at Strawbridge Square in Stoke and from 9am to 12pm at the Night-ingale Memorial Library. Keith Cranness is a little embarrassed that we are talking to him about the Nelson Parachute Club reunion this weekend – “I only did 300 jumps,” he says. “It’s bugger all mate.”But the former club president, who lives in Stoke, was one of the many keen souls that kept the club alive and made it notoriously fun. In fact the club attracted “social club” members that didn’t even skydive, but were a part of the club for its social scene. Keith says he always wanted to skydive and was also a motorbike racer in England before im-migrating to New Zealand, “I loved the adrena-line, I knew I would be a skydiver since I was a kid.” His last jump was in 1978 and he says he is going to the reunion this weekend but refuses to jump, even for old time sake, “I’ll get hooked on it again, I know it and I can’t afford to get hooked on it, it’s too expensive for me now,” he jokes. The Nelson Parachute Club was founded in 1964 and operated out of its clubrooms at Nelson Air-port until it folded in 2002.With the death of former members Chris McDon-ald and Rod Miller in Fiordland last year former club member Chrissie Small says it was decided to have a reunion before any other past members passed away. “We said to each other ‘we shouldn’t be meeting at funerals and decided to have a reun-ion before we lost anyone else.”The reunion is being held this weekend in Mapua and Motueka, and involves dinner, dancing and, of course, skydiving.Keith says it will nice to see former club members again. “I’ll go and I’ll enjoy it, we used to have the best time, people would come to skydive in Nel-son and not want to leave because they had so much fun.”The parachute club was “like one big family”

says Keith and the thrill of what they were doing bound them together. “You could go all over the world and have a special bond with other jump-ers. It’s a great community to be involved in.”He still remembers his first jump as “bloody scary, man” and although he clocked up another 299 in his skydiving career says every time was a buzz no matter how used to it you got.

For past members who want to register Chrissie says it is best to give her an email at [email protected]. “We’ve got jumpers, friends, pilots, all sorts of people coming. Anyone associated with the club is welcome to register,” she says.On display during the weekend will also be old trophies and memorabilia.

Women’s lifestyle expo back in NelsonOne of Nelson’s most popular events, the Women’s Lifestyle Expo returns next weekend. Renee Mur-ray of Peacocks Promotions, organ-isers of the expo, says with many other expos coming and going over the years, the Women’s Lifestyle Expo has flourished. “There are not many events in the region that see over 110 exhibits in one venue. One reason for the Expo’s continued success is the way we try and keep it fresh for visitors, so year after year they can see new companies and new entertainment” This year there is lots on offer for the local “foodies”. Local Chef, Stu-art Cliffin, from Relish Waterfront Dining will feature at this years Expo with cooking demonstra-tions held each day. There are also a range of gourmet goods to tempt your taste buds, such as wine, truf-fles, confectionary, organic coffee, natural lemonade, vodka and much more. Local brewery McCashin’s will feature on site with their vari-ety of spirits, beer and cider. One lucky Expo visitor could win a trip for two to beautiful Vanuatu with New Idea Magazine who will also feature at the Expo, handing out free copies of their latest issue while stocks last. The Women’s Lifestyle Expo is on at the Trafalgar Centre, April 9 and 10, for more information see www.expos.co.nz or find us on facebook.

The house warming of Nelson’s Jefferies family included a rather large gift – and it wasn’t just the keys to the new house. The Jefferies family is the newest proud owners of a Habitat for Humanity home in Nelson, the 14th built in just 15 years. But Nelson MP Nick Smith announced that two more Nelson homes would be able to be built in the city via Habitat for Humanity, thanks to a $240,000 grant by the Housing Innovation Fund. The announcement drew spontaneous applause amongst an already excited crowd, thrilled to see another worthy family take up residence in an-other Habitat home.Nelson president of Habitat for Humanity Julian Shields, says he was “overjoyed” to see the Jeffer-

ies take the keys do their new home. “It’s won-derful and the best home we’ve built so far.”The building started last November and was aid-ed by several American volunteers who helped get things started. It was then up to local builder Rob Silcock and his team to finish it off.Paul Jefferies says the family was so excited to move in that their boxes were all packed the morning of the dedication and he was “eternally grateful” for the support he and his family had received. “This is a very humbling experience and the start of a new exciting chapter for us.”Nick was at the dedication to the first Habitat for Humanity home in Nelson in 1999 and says the latest is the greatest. “This is such a wonderful

moment, the Nelson community is right behind you.”The home at St Law-rence St was dedicat-ed on Sunday.Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organi-sation that gives peo-ple in need a hand up. Supporting families like the Jefferies build their own home adds to the sense of accom-plishment and helps build the culture of home ownership.Nelson city council-lors Rachel Reese and Ian Barker also at-tended the dedication ceremony.

The entire school roll of Auckland Point School visited Nelson’s iconic Boulder Bank last week, including students Caleb Orr, 9, Mac Russell, 10, Imogen Scholfield, 9, and Eden Rutherfurd, 8, above.Principal Sonia Hockley says the trip was taken after a school study into the Boulder Bank, Marine reserve and Port by the school’s students. Once on the Boulder Bank, students explored it and visited the lighthouse. Sonia says the students “loved” the visit. “The boat trip over there was exciting for many of them because we had to fundraise for a while to pay for it.”The 46 pupils also looked into the bird life and other creatures that call Nelson Haven home. - Andrew Board.

Kate Bryant believes her pumpkin the size of “two little heavy mums” will take out the giant pumpkin growing competition at the Tahunanui School gala this weekend, but her biggest chal-lenge is getting it there. The six year-old has been taking good care of her pumpkin every single day since she planted it and could not believe how much it has grown.Kate’s mum, Ange, is hopeful their pumpkin will be one of the biggest at the gala. “There could be some sneaky pumpkins around Tahunanui that we don’t know about. It might be one of the bigger ones, but it may not be the biggest,” says Ange.Good compost, regular watering and a bit of luck is their secret to success and they estimate their pumpkin to be more than 120kg.Kate would like to make a jack-o-lantern out of the pumpkin once the competition is completed. “But we might need a chainsaw to do that.”A trailer and some strong blokes will help get the pumpkin to the school, says Ange. The pumpkin growing competition, along with a mammoth swimathon, headline the 2011 edi-tion of one of the region’s most successful annual school galas. The school gala is one last push towards fund-raising for the school’s new pool so the swima-thon gives children a first hand chance to help.Current and past students, teacher and parents will be swimming 26 kilometers or 1421 lengths of the pool, the distance of the Cook Strait. They have been seeking local sponsorship and there are plenty of prizes for those who can swim the most lengths on the day.Other fun activities include a downhill water-slide, a Sport Tasman bike course, international food stalls, chocolate wheel, produce, the white elephant and much more. The gala kicks off this Sunday at 11am. The giant pumpkin competition commences at 11:15am.

• One car carrier, the Santa Regina visiting on her regular service, a super yacht in for repairs, four large container ships, the reg-ular daily ferry to the National Park, a log ship, barge shifts, seven large fishing ves-sel movements and several smaller ones, a rig tender for survey, all kept the port and staff busy this week.• The large spring tides, (which is an anomaly going into autumn) have uncov-ered many new features of the beaches and the port. The strength of the tidal currents

have surprised a few this week. With the large tides and current surges we have ob-served an abundance of new debris and trees out in the bay. Please ensure you keep a proper lookout as some of the debris is very big and dangerous.• I am aware that the mornings are now quite dark and wish to point out that if you operate a kayak or skiff you need to ensure it is easily visible. This is best, and legally, achieved by an all round white light. If you wear a light on your helmet that faces for-ward be aware that the Collision Regula-tions state that “it must be exhibited in suf-ficient time to prevent a collision”. Beware of the vessels coming from behind you as

you are very difficult to see.• Finally, I was fortunate to attend a Coast-guard meeting recently and be invited to join. Should any of you wish to assist the lo-cal volunteer coastguard please do not hes-itate to contact Phil Pollero on 0274778193 or [email protected] and Phil will direct you to the local unit.

If in doubt- don’t go out.

Talking turkey to get to TurkeySteph Trengrove found it embarrassing carrying a giant-sized cheque around Nelson College for Girls last week. But this week the 17 year-old hopes to be handling a boarding pass to Gallipoli as she looks to scoop the top prize at the National Bank RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition.Steph won $1000, from National Bank, and the regional final of prestigious new secondary school speech compe-tition last week and has now qualified for the national final in Wellington.Nelson College for Girls also received $1000 and a military book. The winner of the national competition, though, wins a trip to Gallipoli for Anzac day along with a brand new laptop and camera to record their experience. The theme of her speech identifies national pride, that kiwis are differ-ent. “Kiwi soldiers aren’t just soldiers, they’re Kiwis,” says Steph. “They’re our people and they come from our coun-try.”“I can’t relate to war, I can’t relate to be-

ing a soldier, but I can relate to being a Kiwi and what it feels like to be patri-otic about my country.”Steph’s father is a brigadier in the mili-tary while her mother is a former solid-er. So who does she take to Gallipoli if she wins? “Mum’s already bagsed it. Dad was away so he didn’t even get a look in.”Steph competed in the regional compe-tition last year, she only received highly recommended in 2010 but got to per-form the speech at the dawn service. All of the $1000 will go towards she university fees where she intends to study international law at Victoria Uni-versity. “It’s so upsetting. But I have to pay for it somehow.”Some heavy research, novel reading and asking her dad, was enough infor-mation needed for the speech which has put her in the top nine nationally.Steph says winning the trip to Gallipoli would be a once in a life time opportu-nity. “I’m pretty patriotic so It’d be the most moving experience.”

Long-time youth worker leaving Nelson

Chrissie Tamihana.

For more than eight years local woman Chrissie Tamihana has been helping the youth of the city find employment and study. But next week the New Hub youth transitions worker will be tak-ing on a new step in her life and is relocating to Hamilton to closer the ties with her whanau, and her husband Gordon’s iwi.In 2003 the New Hub received a grant to do youth transitions work in Nelson and since then a number of teenagers aged 15-18 years-old have been given a helping hand to find work once they have finished secondary school. “We’ve worked really hard with some of the most vulnerable youth in Nelson. If you can help youth find a job and get on a course then they’re not going to be out there doing the mischief they were before,” says Chrissie.Youth can be without homes, have trouble with the law or trouble with their family and sometimes employment is the last thing on their mind. But Chrissie says the job is about tackling the first is-sue and then making sure they find employment. Her highlight comes from the satisfaction of helping youth find work. Chrissie says parents have sent her cards and chocolates thanking her for finding their child work within Nelson. Another highlight was receiving a human rights award for a multi cultural youth group that was set up at the New Hub. Chrissie says the employment situation in Nel-son has become much tougher for youth to find work and is hoping that local businesses would

consider employing teenagers. “The government still has the $5000 subsidy, so if they looked at taking on a youth it would be great if they got hold of the New Hub.”The New Hub has had plenty of changes within the past eight years, including a physically dif-

ferent building, changing staff, changing contracts and a younger target age due to the “changing times.” But she says youth will al-ways be in safe hands with the staff at the New Hub as it continues to serve local people. After school time has become popular for stu-dents with basketball, computer games, internet, pool, cooking and homework space all available. But after 35 years of working with youth, Chrissie admits she finds it hard to skip the youth work sec-tion on employment websites. “I keep looking at jobs and thinking maybe I should look at something

else. It’s hard to keep away from it actually. It’s been a long time we’ve been in Nelson, so I’m looking forward to it but I’m scared and hope-ful.”

The spine of Port Nelson is Vickerman St and along it is a surprising array of businesses from eatery’s to marine engineers and retail stores. Vickerman St was named after Captain Frank Vickerman, an officer and master of the Anchor Company for 55 years. He retired in 1924 and had the street named after him when the big reclamation was in full swing in the 1960’s. Today Vickerman St honours its namesake with a large amount of marine businesses, but it is much more than that. In this feature are some of the vibrant businesses that help make the Port what it is.

Challenger Finfisheries Management Company Ltd is one of a number of CSOs (commercial stakeholder organisations) representing the property rights of quota owners in the New Zealand seafood industry. Quota owners can be fishermen or investors or companies who employ fishermen. The company represents 55 inshore fishstocks in fisheries management areas 7 & 8 which encompass the regions of Marlborough Sounds, Tasman and Golden Bays, west coast South Island and up into the Taranaki region. The predominant fish species caught by our inshore fin-fishermen are Snapper, Blue Cod, Red Cod, Bluenose, Monkfish, Tarakihi,

Warehou, Gurnard, Trevally, Rig, Blue Moki, Flounder, Groper, Turbot, School Shark and John Dory. The regions support a number of local fishermen who contribute to their local community and economy, and provide stewardship towards sustainable fisheries. Take the Marlborough Sounds for example you can count the number of fishermen targeting Blue Cod on one hand. They use the very selective fishing method of cod potting and are governed by the quota management system for the amount of fish they can catch. As a quota owner they also contribute to science and research through the Ministry of Fisheries cost recovery regime.

The blue cod fishery in the Marlborough Sounds is one of the iconic recreational fisheries in New Zealand and offers important benefit to amateur fishers. However, there have been long-standing concerns about the sustainability of blue cod within the Sounds given the high levels of recreational fishing pressure in the area. In 2008, the then Minister of Fisheries closed an area of the Marlborough Sounds to amateur fishing

for blue cod. The intention behind the closure was to stop any decline of blue cod numbers in the closed areas and provide an opportunity for recreational stakeholders to work together towards developing a new management approach. This opportunity has now been provided and a set of management rules have been developed. The Minister has announced that the fishery will reopen on 1 April 2011 with

the new management rules in place. The new rules aim not only to manage the level of recreational catch, but also to make sure that the blue cod can successfully reproduce to sustainable levels. This is necessary to ensure the Marlborough blue cod fishery remains healthy for future generations. For more information visit www.fish.govt.nz (go to HOT TOPICS then Marlborough Sounds Blue Cod).

The Dempster family now has two rea-sons to snap up their season passes to this year’s Giants’ season.Aaron Dempster has joined older broth-er Sam in the Fico Finance Nelson Gi-ants 14-man roster as the Nayland Col-lege basketball factory continues to take giant strides. The two brothers follow the path of Chris Daniel as the latest former Nay-land College students to make an NBL roster. And they could be followed by even more representation with Zeb Lovell, 17, and New Zealand under-18 player Scott Cameron, 17, filling the de-velopment spots.Aaron, 18, captained Nayland College to fourth place at the New Zealand Sec-ondary School Basketball Champion-ship last year - the highest finish in the school’s history - and says it was a proud moment for his family when he was in-cluded in the Giants’ squad.Sam enters the fray in his third cam-paign and is hoping to follow on from last season were he took the court in 11 matches as a small forward averaging 3.9 minutes a game.Aaron, who plays point-guard, says the transition in to the NBL will be easier training alongside his brother. “It’s quite good because he can help you out with anything and we’re close so if there’s any troubles then he helps me. And some-times I can give him some help with moves and stuff,” he says. Both boys admit the sibling rivalry end-ed years ago and they are more focussed on learning off each other and their ex-

perienced team-mates. “The Giants is a good environment to improve your game. Players like Phil Jones and Mika [Vukona] will help you get better. So I just want to get stronger as a player.”Nelson College has been a breeding ground for developing Giants in previ-ous years but Sam hopes the number of Nayland College students coming through the ranks, shows that Nayland

has now emerged as the top basketball college in Nelson. Sam is also co-coach-ing the Nayland senior A boys basket-ball team. The Giants’ first pre-season assignment is a two-day tournament in Palmerston North on April 2-3. Nelson will play Taranaki, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay in shortened games on the Saturday, be-fore meeting Manawatu on Sunday.

Proud to supply accounting services to Brads Smash Repairs

It’s not many Panel beaters or spray painters that go green but here in Nelson we have one that has - Brads Smash Repairs based in the Wakatu Industrial Estate. Since 1996 most major vehicle manufacturers have been using water based paint to colour the cars you own. Non toxic, containing no harmful solvents or chemicals and environmentally friendly. That also includes no harmful emissions and there is no risk of explosions or fire. Trouble is, New Zealand is one of the

last countries in the world to follow suit and change to the water borne paint systems and most of our car and truck repair industry is still using the toxic, solvent based systems. However, as from 10 January this year, Brad and Marney Kelling, owners of Brads Smash Repairs invested in the areas first exclusive PPG water borne paint system and it’s now up and running!

Brad Kelling is passionate about cars and while his working day is spent predominantly on insurance work, he manages to find a little bit of spare time to work on his own projects

tough, if not tougher than the old solvent based. In many cases we are using the exact same paint as the vehicle manufacturer” he says. PPG Industries NZ has worked with Brads and been instrumental in introducing the new eco friendly paint system. Brad and Marney admit that while the customer will have little to do with this system their insurance companies do, and as they point out the individual customers can now nominate which repairer should fix their car after an accident. “At the end of the day our high quality workmanship has been up graded, and our paint system is not only better and tougher it’s got that very real eco friendly angle. As parents of two young children we are actually very happy with what we have done as a company to ensure their future” says Marney. “It was a big move and commitment for us and I know we have made the right decision. After all, water based paint on vehicles isn’t a new thing. It has been around for twenty years, but most of us never knew”. Brads Smash Repairs are available for any questions the public or the insurance industry may have and welcome any enquiry.

This new system comes with a lifetime warranty on all paints applied but that will never be a problem on modern vehicles according to Brad Kelling. “It has been getting more and more difficult to get colours and matchings right as we were using solvent products against factory water based paint and that always effected colours and textures. Now the matching is perfect and the paint is as

The Stoke Eagles soared to twin titles over the weekend, with both its men’s and women’s teams winning the Intercity softball finals in Marlbor-ough.The women’s side dispatched of Royals Xtreme 4-1 in a high-quality, tight final. Both sides played a big hitting game, providing plenty of catching opportunities, which Eagles outfielder Abbie Grant enjoyed, taking three catches. The Eagles scored in the first, fourth and sixth inning to comfortably take the title in the seven inning contest. Michelle Simpson was a standout

with the bat, striking at 1000 and hitting both left and right handed. The title adds to the Nelson Club final champion-ship that the Stoke Eagles also won over Royals Xtreme on March 19. In the men’s competition the Stoke Eagles over-came the Waimea Eagles in the final, winning 8-2. The game was tightly fought with the teams tied coming into the seventh and final inning, until Stoke unleashed its big hitters and battered in six runs to kill off the Waimea attack and re-tain its Intercity title.

Nelson teams struggle against champions

Nelson football clubs know the benchmark now after they all failed to overturn de-fending champions Richmond Athletic in the pre-season tourna-ment at Jubilee Park on Sunday.FC Nelson United, playing under that-banner for the first time, did impress throughout the tour-nament and even picked up a 2-2 draw against the very youthful Nelson Sub-urbs 1st XI side. The draw meant Nel-son Suburbs' final round clash verus Richmond became the decider. Both sides continued their typical rivarly spirit with a whopping seven yellow cards being dished out and one red card to John Slotemaker, one of only two players in the team over the age of 20 years-old.Gagame Feni scored twice for the visitors

before a fierce come-back led by imports Sam Mason-Smith and Jorge Donoso stole the game at the death. The Nelson Pine In-dustries first division kicks off this Saturday.

Middle: Abbie Grant, Michelle Simpson, Kelly Hahn, Jodi Hikuroa, Karina Miller and Shenee Riley. Front: Pip Lee and Rachel Knowles. Abbie Cook was also a part of the team but managed to leave in time to miss the photo.

Stoke refocus ahead of first home gameStoke’s team huddle at the conclusion of last week’s hefty loss against Waimea Old Boys would not have been a happy place, but head coach Jason Hulina says he is confi-dent the turnaround from his troopers will be swift.Accessman Stoke heads into its first home match of the year this Saturday against a Huia side that narrowly lost to Nelson over the weekend.

But Jason says the players are determined to get their season back on track following the sides first up win over Riwaka and Sat-urday’s loss at Jubilee Park.“We have a mountain of areas to work on which will only make us more focused and dominant as the season progresses. We were humbled by a Waimea side that was definitely there to play a hard confronta-tional game,” he says.

“We never found our natu-ral rhythm and were forced into rash errors and unchar-acteristic lapses of judge-ment.”The news is not all bad for Stoke though, the kicking display of Waimea’s Andrew Leatham was outstanding and it was that which killed the game for the visitors. Stoke knows how to win and Jason says it is deter-mined to do so in front of its home fans this Saturday.Chris Little scored Stoke’s only try in the 35-13 loss with Shaun Begg kicking a conversion and two penalty goals. This Saturday’s match kicks off at Greenmedows at 3pm with the division 2 side, which was thrashed by Waimea 73-6 last weekend, playing the curtain raiser against Huia at 1.15pm.
