Where is the Humongous Fungus?
The most frequently asked question about the Humongous Fungus is WHERE IS IT?? Well, we have the answer and a helpful map! The Humongous Fungus is a subterranean fungus spread out over 187 acres south of downtown Crystal Falls and East of Alpha in Mastodon Township. It produces honey mushrooms in the fall that are indeed edible! Below are photos showing the tendrils of the fungus, the honey mush-rooms, and a map of fungus area. To learn more about the discovery of the fungus and it’s remeasurement in 2017, visit iron.org/fungusfest!

2019 Humongous Fungus
Festival Sponsors & Supporters The largest, contiguous life-form on Earth lives right here in Iron County! It’s a massive Armillaria Gallica fungus (also known as a “honey mushroom” or “shoestring mushroom”) that lives under-ground spread out between Crystal Falls and Alpha.
What is the Humongous Fungus?
The benevolent fungus was discovered by accident in the late 1980’s living underneath Crystal Falls. At the time it was determined to be the largest life-form on earth, and gained national attention in the 1990’s. It even got it’s own wacky list on David Letterman (see below!). The original team of scientists that discovered the fungus returned in 2017 to remeasure it, finding that it is in fact more than double the size of the original measurement. The mushroom is now confirmed to spread across 187 acres, weigh about 882,000 pounds and be approximately 2,500 years old! Top “Facts” about the giant 100-ton fungus found in
Michigan according to David Letterman:
1. Bill Clinton once tried to smoke some of it.
2. It has a vanity plate: "FUNGUS-1”
3. Elvis once tried to make it into 40-acre pizza.
4. It was used to make William Shatner's hairpiece.
5. It might be an old Y-M-C-A they forgot to disinfect.
6. It’s nicknamed "Debbie".
7. It tastes like chicken.

CHICKEN MARSALA
This recipe makes 2-4 portions.
Ingredients:
• 3 skinless chicken breasts
• 1/2 C flour
• 8 oz white button or crimini mushrooms, thinly sliced
• 2 T shallots, finely chopped
• 1/2 C heavy cream
• 1 3/4 C chicken broth or stock
• 2 t fresh sage, finely chopped
• 1 t lemon juice
• 4 T butter
• 1 T EVOO
• 1/2 C Marsala wine (plus about 2 T extra)
• Salt and pepper
Take your chicken stock and put it into a saucepan on medium-high heat
and reduce it down to about 3/4 of a cup.
Chicken Marsala uses thin chicken breasts – shoot for getting the breasts
about 3/8″ thick. Pat the filets dry and season with salt and set aside.
You’ll need two 10″ non-stick frying pans for this recipe. Put the first
one on medium high heat and melt 3 T of butter. Add the shallots and sau-
té for a minute or two. Next, add the mushroom slices and 1 t of fresh
sage. Season with salt and pepper. Stir to get the butter coated all over
the mushrooms and then leave alone for a few minutes. Brown, then remove
from the heat.
Put the flour into a shallow bowl or plate and season with salt and pep-
per (you can also add in a dash of cayenne). Dredge the chicken fillets
in the flour and shake off the extra and set aside.
Heat the second frying pan over high heat and add 1 T of butter and 1 T
of EVOO. Get it nice and hot and add the chicken (it should sizzle when
it hits the fat). Depending on the size of your fillets (and pan), you
may need to do this in several batches. Cook for 4-5 minutes total, flip-
ping once – you should get a nice golden color. Place the cooked fillets
on a plate and keep warm (foil, in a warming drawer or in your oven
turned down low).
Add the Marsala wine to the pan you cooked the chicken in and deglaze the
pan, stirring up all the brown bits on the bottom. Keeping it at high
heat, add in the reduced chicken stock, heavy cream and the mushroom mix-
ture. Let cook and bubble, stirring continuously, until it starts to
thicken. When the sauce is a good consistency, reduce the heat to low and
add in about 2 T more of Marsala, the lemon juice and the remaining 1 t
of sage. Stir and taste and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Place the fillets on your serving plates and top with the Marsala mush-
room sauce and be prepared for some amazing, rich flavors!
A perfect pairing is to service on a bed of fresh-made (or dried) pap-
pardelle pasta tossed with butter and chopped parsley, finished with a
little fresh cracked pepper.

MUSHROOM RECIPES
MIXED MUSHROOM BRUSCHETTA
Ingredients:
• 2 T EVOO
• 8-10 ounces mixed wild mushrooms (such as Shiitake, Oyster and Chan-
terelle)
• 2 cloves of garlic, 1 peeled and finely chopped, the other halved
• 2 t fresh thyme, chopped
• 2 t fresh parsley, chopped
• 1 dried red de arbol chili, crumbled
• 1 T butter
• 1 t lemon juice
• Salt and pepper
Sliced crusty bread (French baguette or sourdough work great)
Put a large heavy frying pan, big enough to hold all the mushrooms in
one layer, over medium heat and add 2 T of EVOO. Depending on the size
of your mushrooms, leave any small ones whole but tear, break or slice
the larger ones up. Add them all to the pan and give it a shake to toss
the mushrooms in the oil.
Add the chopped garlic and fresh herbs and shake the pan again. Add a
pinch of salt and pepper and the crumbled chili and leave to fry gently
for a few minutes. If the mixture becomes dry, pour in a little more
oil.
Once the mushrooms have got some color, add the butter and lemon juice
and toss again. To finish this off and make it into a lovely, creamy
sauce, spoon it 2-3 T of water into the pan. Simmer for a little longer,
until you have a lovely simple sauce that just loosely coats the mush-
rooms.
Toast your bread - if using large slices, use a toaster otherwise toast
for 5-6 minutes on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350. Once toasted, rub
the bread with the cut side of the remaining clove of garlic. Place each
slice on a serving plate, pile the mushrooms and the creamy juices from
the pan on top and dig in!
