2-Objectives
General
Maximise the efficiency of the extant organizational effort by promoting synergies among research teams within EDIT and beyond, :
• by exploring prospective areas for future collaborative efforts
and• by identifying end users and their needs from the field of taxonomy.

2-Objectives
For the 5 Years: Maximise the efficiency and scientific excellence of the extant
organizational effort by promoting synergies among research teams within EDIT and beyond.
Link taxonomic research with societal requirements (end user communities).
“Scientific alertness”: Explore prospecting areas for future collaborative projects. This will include emerging research topics and new tools and technologies.
Develop a durable integrated research agenda for the EDIT roadmap.
Organize competitive calls for tender and follow up projects

28/06/06 Kickoff Meeting
4-Activities
4.1 Integrating research projects within and beyond EDIT
4.2 Design and establish mechanism for call for tenders and follow-up of projects
4.3 Liason research / End-users
4.4 Scientific alertness: prospecting new and emerging opportunities
4.5 Progress towards an Integrated Research Agenda
28/06/06 Kickoff Meeting
2-Objectives
First 18 months
• Set up blueprint for coordination of research projects within EDIT
• Link taxonomy with societal requirements (end users).
• Prospect for new research topics and new tools and technologies for taxonomic identification, and for implementation of corresponding collaborative projects.
28/06/06 Kickoff Meeting
2-Objectives
4.1 Integrating research projects within and beyond EDIT
Deliverables Report on the state-of-the-art taxonomic research within EDIT
(month 18) (collaboration with NHMD)
Agenda for thematic EDIT meetings (month 10 - 18+)
Draft and agreed guidelines for selecting pilot projects (month 12-18)
Preliminary database of potential evaluators of projects (month 18+) (NHMD)
Specific goal: Promote collaboration and complementarity among research teams within EDIT and establish mechanisms for integration of non-EDIT experts
28/06/06 Kickoff Meeting
4-Activities
Proposal
Explore within EDIT institutions and through a bibliometrical analysis in collaboration with the Centro de Información y Documentación (CINDOC) of the CSIC:
Who?, With whom?, Where?, Which group? Geographical areas? Methodologies?……..
4.1 Integrating research projects within and beyond EDIT
28/06/06 Kickoff Meeting
2-Objectives
4.2 Liaison research / End-users
Deliverables: Web platform for e-conferences (month 4) (WP1)
Report on brainsturming e-conference to identify potential end user groups and decide on how to assess their taxonomic needs (month 12)
Draft report on research – end user liaison (month 12) (probably postponed)
Structure and terms of reference for liaison group (month 18) (INRA)
Specific goals: Identification and categorization of end users groups.
Assess end users’ needs for taxonomy by sectors of end users

4.2 Liaison research / End-users
Many activities postponed until hiring
28/06/06 Kickoff Meeting
2-Objectives
4.3 Scientific alertness: prospecting new and emerging opportunities
Specific goals:
Prospect new areas for integrated research in EDIT, e.g., as identified from SAC, liaison groups, NSC and BD
Prospect new tools and technologies for improving rapid taxonomic identification
28/06/06 Kickoff Meeting
2-Objectives
4.3 Scientific alertnesss: prospecting new and emerging opportunities
Description of work:
Setting up an “alertness group” to prospect emerging opportunities (methods, tools, etc.).
Organising workshops on already identified topics, including DNA Bar-coding (in collaboration with WP3), Morphometrics-Image Recognition and Sounds (for acoustic animals)
Establishing a taskforce for organizing further workshops on themes suggested by alertness group, NSC, SAC, liaison groups or by CETAF, or emerging from the WP2 information on ongoing research.

4-Activities
4.3 Scientific alertness: prospecting new and emerging opportunities
Proposal:
“Alertness Group” should cover at least:
Conceptual advances in Taxonomy
Technological innovation for potential taxonomic application (Image analysis -XR, CTScan, ESEM, Communication, Robotics, Molecular biology, Proteomics, etc)
Information accessibility through Internet (databases, cartography, PDF-bibliography, etc)
Others to be identified
