GAbout LERIG 2011…..
Marking the beginning of the“Leather Week” celebrations at Chennai,India, the stakeholders of the Indian leather sector organize theLeather Research Industry Get-together (LERIG) with the CentralLeather Research Institute (CLRI) taking the lead. Since �965, LERIGhas provided a platform for formal and informal discussions amongstthe researchers, academicians and industrial leaders, thus pavingway for concerted actions towards overall development of the sector.Inrecentyears,thematicdiscussionsincludedBiologicaloptionsforleatherprocessing,Challengesandopportunitiesforleathersector,DevelopmentInitiatives, Augmentation Measures, Opportunities and New Directionsetc.LERIGisawellattendedeventwithindustrialleaders,technicalandR&Dpersonnel,researchersandyoungresearchersparticipating.
Concertedeffortsarerequiredfromresearchersinacademicorganizationssuch as CLRI and in chemical houses, the practicing young technicalforceandthedecisionbodiessuchasthestakeholderorganizationsforachievingahighermarketshareforIndianleather.�5thLERIGprovidesaplatformforsuchaneffort,whereinunderthecentralthemeofChemicals,discussionscanbeheldonmajortechnological issues impactingworldtradeonleather.Thesessionswouldhavepanelistsfromindustry,whowillhighlightthedrawbacksofexistingtechnologies,andR&DexpertsfromleadingchemicalmanufacturinghousesandCLRIwhowouldhighlighthowtheyhaveaddressedthesedrawbacksandalsotheextenttowhichtheirchemicalswouldmeetthegreenchemistryprinciplesandbansoncertainchemicalsundertheREACHprotocol.Sessionshavebeendividedinto four to discuss green technologies, requirements by customers,valueadditionandcompliancenormsandqualityconsistencyneeds.Onbothdays,productdemonstrationswouldbeheldbychemicalhousestoexplainfeaturesofnewproducts.

About Prof. Bi Shi
Born in �958, professor Bi Shi has been engagedas the doctoral supervisor of Light Textile andFood College, and he is the Director of NationalEngineering Laboratory for Clean Technology ofLeatherManufactureandKeyLaboratoryofMinistryof Education, Sichuan University, China. Presidentof International Union of Leather TechnologistsandChemists(IULTCS),heisawell-knownexpertincleanleathertechnologyandreclamationofleatherwastes.Hehastotalof�68researchpapersandhascultured several post doctorates, doctorates andmastersstudents.

I am writing this note informing you about the�5th edition of LERIG. LERIG �0�� will focus onconnectingleatherresearchandindustrythroughthe backbone of leather, namely, chemicals. Wehave planned four technical sessions and fourproduct demonstration sessions through whichwewilltrytobridgethegapbetweentheneedandthe availability of chemicals to achieve greener,naturalproducts,enhancedpropertiessoughtbycustomers,valueadditiontoIndianmaterialsandalsocompliancetostatutorynorms.
LERIG would be followed by the �6th IILF slatedfor��Januaryto�February�0��attheChennaiTradeCentre.

Green Mark is the figure of“agreenleaftowrapupacleanandunpollutedearth”.GreenMarkmeansthe product has been verified through certain certification to show thatit is qualified of recyclable, low pollution, and resource saving therebycontributingtotheenvironmentalprotection.GreenMarkopensanarrayof opportunities to encourage and step forward on the exciting path ofsuccess.Itisintendedtopromotesustainabilityintheprocessenvironmentandraiseenvironmentalawarenessamongthestakeholders.
Toreachsuchanobjectiveinleatherindustryoneneedtotargetontheuseofgreenerand/ornaturalleatherchemicalsforthegreenmarkinleathers.Single approach of using natural chemicals alone may not be adequateto obtain desired properties in leathers and hence there is also need forthedevelopmentofhighexhaustionmethodologytoattainzero leatherchemicalandpossiblyzeroliquiddischarge.

TripleHelixAuditorium,CLRIBackgroundCompliance calls for making leather chemicals andleathers in accordance with established guidelines,specifications,orlegislation.REACHnormsareevolvingand sceptism in the minds of the tanner needs tobe resolved by the chemical manufacturer and theresearchers.Testingnormsrelatingtofinishes,presenceof hazardous metal ions etc need to be explained in amanner in which the technical workforce can easilyidentifythepotentialsourcesforsuchbannedchemicalsand avoid them in leather processing. Alternatives forsuchbannedchemicalswillalsoneedtobediscussed.
Consistencyofqualityisyetanotherareaofparamountimportance.Thissessionwouldprovideinsightonhowqualityconsistencyandcompliancecangohandinhandintanneries.
Thesessiononcompliancehopestoevolveastrategicconcertedactionplaninvolvingalltheleadplayers,namely,tanner,chemicalhousesandresearcherstomeetthepresentandfuturisticcompliancenormseasily.Theevolvedactionplan is expected to make the tanners realize more value from their leatherthrough compliance, rather than compliance becoming a hindrance to theirbusiness.
