Extreme Engineering

INTRODUCTION

Engineering projects around the globe are getting more and more ambitious as major cities jostle to be known for signaturelandmark buildings and overcomingimpossible engineering feats. Today, structures compete to dwarf anything that has come before. Records are broken, design and technical boundaries arechallenged; and new concepts onliveability and sustainability have also emerged in the race for space. Plans beyond imagination are on the drawing board for projects so huge – not only in scale but in their implications for society. Some examples include 'Tunnelling under the Alps', 'Bridging the Bering Strait', 'Widening the Panama Canal', ‘Hong Kong- Zhuhai-Macao Bridge’, the 'Burj Khalifa’ and the “Shanghai Tower”. Soon, we will be constructing beyond heights of 1000m,very long span bridges, very deepunderground tunnels under the sea and structures in previously inhabitable spaces. We welcome research and case studies on these and many more exciting Extreme Engineering projects.
