Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,!
!
! Much is demanded of a disciple, but great are the rewards. Elisha’s benefactors furnish a room for the itinerant
prophet and he goes on to make them an extraordinary promise. Saint Paul tells the Romans that those baptized in Christ
are baptized into His death but they will also live with Him in eternal life. Jesus tells His apostles that each must take up
his cross, but they will be rewarded with everlasting life in the kingdom. Are we willing to be disciples too?!

!
Also Saturday, June 27, is Elaine’s final day to play for the Mass in Masontown. Please plan on attending!
her farewell reception in the school cafeteria following the Mass. Thanks, Elaine, for a job well done!!!
We welcome Eric to the Saturday evening Mass.!

Monday is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Peter , the rock, affirmed Jesus as “the Christ, the son!
of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). He later denied Christ to protect himself and then wept bitterly. After the
Resurrection, Peter affirmed his love for Christ, proclaiming him unto death. Saul persecuted the early!
Christians yet Jesus appeared to him and empowered him to preach the Christ until he was martyred.!
!
Tuesday is the Feast of the First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church. The Church commemorates!
these nameless martyrs whose sacrifice and steadfastness has inspired believers for two millennia.!
!
We welcome JULY on Wednesday with the Feast of Saint Junipero Serra. He walked 24,000 miles and founded!
a string of 21 missions from San Diego to Sonoma, California. Junipero Serra saw people of every race and origin!
as first and foremost sons and daughters of God, a conviction that drove his missionary work to the end of the earth.!
!
Friday is the Feast of Saint Thomas. Called “Didymus” or “the twin,” he was one of the twelve Apostles.!
He is remembered for doubting the Resurrection of Christ. According to tradition, Thomas is the only apostle!
who went outside the borders of the Roman Empire to evangelize. Although there is no Gospel account!
attributed to him, it is not accepted in the cannon of scripture and is in fact, of Gnostic Origin.!

Here is the Prayer of Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present!
in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot!
at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You!
were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.!

Question of the Week: Can I allow myself to attempt to see the world from!
God’s perspective? What sacrifice can I make to carry out the Lord’s Mission?!
!
Our Psalm Response this week: “For ever I will sing the Goodness of the Lord,”!

CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY!
! Day in and day out, we are required to make
judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable
Christian love. We do what we can do and God takes
notice. God is in charge of rewards and a glass of water
will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad
and open heart.!
! Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary
work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He re-
minds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in con-
cert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death
and life. In any given moment both life and death are
there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s
difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins.
God will take care of that, too.!
!
Whoever gives but a cup of cold water!
to another will surely be rewarded.!
 Matthew 10:3742!
!
INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK!
! “Are you unaware that we who were baptized
into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” What do
you understand these words to mean? Many see these
words as an indication of what may come in eternal life.
In actuality, they have more to do with our lives here and
now. We are called to die to ourselves and offer our lives
as gifts given generously to others. It is not about us.
We are asked to serve God and not continue in our ser-
vice of sin. Life is about learning to do what we really do
not want to do because it brings us deeper into the mys-
tery of God, ourselves and others. Learning how to ac-
cept and live with the “small deaths” and sacrifices we
encounter teaches us how to live with and approach our
final death. We can do so with a heart that has been
touched by and is open to mercy or one that is self
focused and closed.!
!
PRACTICE OF CHARITY!
! The practice of hospitality is affirmed throughout
Scripture. In today’s First Reading, extraordinary bless-
ing is promised for the hospitality extended to Elisha.
Jesus’ words in the Gospel continue this theme, promis-
ing eternal reward to those who extend even the smallest
act of hospitality to even the least ones. Through hospi-
tality, we express our baptismal call and put faith into
action. Our practice of hospitality should not be limited
to strangers and guests but should also be extended to
family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. Take care to
extend hospitality to those you encounter each day. Take
time to write in a journal reflecting on acts of hospitality
you’ve extended and received throughout this week.
Give thanks to God for the opportunity to serve Christ in
others.!
First Reading 2 Kings 4:816a!
Elisha promised, “This time next year!
you will be fondling a baby son.”!
We hear how the prophet Elisha and his servant repaid
the Shunammite woman for her generous hospitality.
When have you shown excessive generosity to another?!
!
Second Reading Romans 6:311!
Consequently, you too must think of yourselves!
as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.!
Paul taught the Roman Christians that through Baptism,
believers fully participate in the death, burial, and!
resurrection of Christ. How should this reality!
impact one’s daytoday living?!
!
Gospel Matthew 10:3742!
“Whoever does not take up his cross and follow!
after me is not worthy of me.”!
Jesus continues to teach his followers the challenges!
of discipleship. What do you find most!
challenging in following Christ?!
Stewardship
! Both the first reading and the Gospel today speak
of hospitality and welcome. Our ministers of hospitality
are a most visible example of using one’s time and tal-
ents to welcome the people of God but the Gospel as-
sures us that all who give even just “a cup of cold water”
to one of His lowliest ones will be rewarded.!

Happy Birthday America!
This Saturday we celebrate our nation’s freedom. On
July 4
th
, 244 years ago, one of America’s most historic
documents was signed marking the birth of this nation.!
! The Declaration of Independence was basically a
list of the reasons that the thirteen colonies had broken
ties with their mother country, Great Britain. Written by
a committee headed by Thomas Jefferson, it stated that
all people had a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness. By the time The Declaration of Independence
was produced, the Revolutionary War had been going on
for some months. It would take eight years for the colo-
nists to win the independence they prized so greatly.!
! While declaring independence from an earthly
power, our forefathers made a forthright declaration of
dependence on God. Let us thank God for His gifts of
life and liberty, for a beautiful country and for a system
of government that is admired all over the world.!
On Monday, June 29, we celebrate the!
Feast of Saints Peter and Paul!
In the name of Jesus, Peter is called to tend the Lord’s
flock and Paul to preach among the Gentiles.!
!
Peter and Paul are amazingly different figures: the rough
and ready fisherman and the intellectual, tireless founder
of small Christian communities springing up wherever!
he paused on his journeys. Peter was the companion of
Jesus in his ministry and Paul was transformed by the
Risen Christ. Even though they labored separately,!
all Christians today trace their roots to their ministry.!
Fourth of July: A Time for Gentle Celebrations!
“You have to love a nation that celebrates its!
independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns,
tanks and soldiers who file by the White House in a show
of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where
kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy and!
the flies die from happiness. You may think you have
overeaten, but it is patriotism.” Erma Bombeck!
!
A safe and blessed weekend to all!!
!
During the month of July, please pray with Pope
Francis for our families. That today’s families may be
accompanied with love, respect, and guidance.!
