Rotary Club of Marina City - 2011-2012 3

MESSAGEPresident of Rotary Club of Marina City 2010/2011

As we come into the Rotary Year 2011/12, I honestly look with trepidation to the year ahead. Our Past Presidents have set the bar high for all future Presidents, having made a huge impact both in our club, as well as to the communities that we serve at large. From beach clean-up projects to sponsoring children’s education in Thailand, from hosting wonderful fellowship evenings to building homes in the Philippines and in Cambodia, from collaborating with other Rotary Clubs and NGOs like Food From the Heart and SANA on worthy projects to organizing conferences and fund-raising events, the list goes on. I salute them. So, on to 2011/12. 2011/12 will be a year of continuity and fellowship. On continuity, we plan to carry on with some of the good work that our Past Presidents have initiated. I would like the club to make a lasting impact on the communities that we serve. Towards this end, some of our major projects would involve continuing to serve the Cambodian community with regard to the provision of safe drinking water to a village community of 150 families, the improvement of a school in Thailand, and to our regular community work involving the elderly and the youth, both in Singapore as well as in Thailand. We will also be launching our school bursary fund in the coming year, with generous past and present support from some of our outstanding club members. On the theme of fellowship, as a club we have grown by leaps and bounds over the last several years. We have had the pleasure of inducting dynamic new members, as well as the honour of having members of long-standing, who continue to serve and guide the club through thick and through thin. All work and no play makes for a dull Rotarian. In the coming year, we will be organizing more opportunities for fellowship in the form of dinners, activities and outings. I would also like to look to our Past Presidents to provide their experience and guidance to the club, guiding our “younger members” in the tenets that make up our wonderful organization, Rotary International. Reach within to embrace humanity. Yours in the service of Rotary,Jude TanPresidentRotary Club of Marina City

Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends

Leadership in rotary is Loaned for a yearno day can be wasted, if the mission of rotary is to be achieved

- P.P. Clifford doChterman

Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

The Rotary Year 2010-2011 has been an exciting and eventful year for me. With the guide of RI’s Club Leadership Plan (CLP), Rotary Club of Marina City (RCMC) has planned various programmes through the committees of Club Administration, Membership, Public relations, Service projects and The Rotary Foundation.

I can still recall that when I took over the Presidency last year, some of these committees were rather new to me. I would have to understand more in detail in order to carry out the projects planned for the year. I am glad that I have completed most of the activities as planned, together with my committee members. The success of these projects is not just me but I am also blessed with a team of dedicated committee members who have taken their precious time to help me execute the programme as planned. Dear Committee Chairs, “Thank you, we make it!”

As you know, the Rotary Year 2010-2011 is also our member, Dr K.A. Abraham’s appointment as the District Governor for District 3310. I am fortunate that I could work alongside our DG and many experienced Rotarians in the District. This has further help me to understand Rotary better. While working on the projects over the last one year, I had also met many good friends within our rotary family, locally and internationally.

As I may be ending my term as a President, there are still many unfortunate people within the country and around other parts of the world that need help any time. Let us continue to help in whatever way we could to make them live better in this world.

Finally, I would like to thank all my working committee and those who had helped me accomplished the club goals for the rotary year. Let us continue to serve the communities and bridge continents in whatever way we could in order to foster world understanding, peace and harmony.

God blessed.

13 Feb 2011- Chinese New Year outing for the elderlys. About 30 elderlys from the Swami Home participated in this outing. We visited the Marina Bay Sky Park follow by a lunch at a Chinese restaurant at the Marina Barrage in Marina South.

14-21 Mar 2011 - H.E.L.P. Nepal 2011. 75 participants comprising Rotarians, volunteers, doctors and dentists went on a Health, Education, Livelihood Project (H.E.L.P) to Nepal, Bandipur. About 1200kg of donated items of clothings, toys and stationeries were brought across to Nepal for the less fortunate in the villages in Bandipur.

Besides the health and education project, RCMC, together with rotary clubs from Garden City, Bugis Junction, Pontian and Banda Sri Begawan jointly worked on a matching grant project with the host club, Rotary club of Patan West in Nepal to construct a water irrigation system to help irrigate the land. This project (total USD 30,000), once completed, would be able to provide water to about 3,000 village people to irrigate their land throughout the year.

Thai Scholarship Event organised by our sister club Rotary Club of Dusit.

RCMC Rotary Education Achievers Fund (REACH) - 5 students from Duman Secondary School has been identified in this pilot project. Each student would be given $500 on a yearly basis to help finance some of their school activities like textbooks, uniforms, transport, etc.

The target group of students are those who are ineligible for the MOE Financial Assistance Scheme but are not well off financially. These students ideally are all rounders, that is, they fare well in the studies but most importantly, actively participate and lead in some community service works.

Service Above Self - paul harrIs

rotary clubs in singaPore about rotary

Rotary International is the world’s first service club organization. Its more than 1.2 million members volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, Service Above Self

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

There are over 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

Most Clubs meet on a weekly basis for fellowship and engaging programs dealing with topics of local and global importance. Every Rotarian has a right to attend any Club meeting anywhere in the world, so there is always somewhere to go, and people to meet, wherever business or leisure travel may take you.

Member ship is by invitation and reflects a wide cross section of community representation and job classifications

object of rotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthi-ness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an oppor-tunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

service is one of the timeless principles upon which rotary is built.

no one experiences the magic of rotary without direct participation in service

10 reasons for joining rotaryguiding PrinciPles1.The Opportunity to Serve. Rotarians provide service at both the community and international levels. Service programs address health-care needs, hunger and poverty, illiteracy, disaster relief, and environmental cleanups, to name a few. Members experience the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.

2.Professional Networking A founding principle of Rotary was to provide a forum for professional and business leaders. Members are leaders in business, industry, the professions, the arts, government, sports, the military, and religion. They make decisions and influence policy. Rotary is the oldest, most prestigious service-club organization in the world.

3.Personal Growth and Development Membership in Rotary ensures continuing personal and professional development. Leadership, public speaking and communication, organization and planning, team-building, fundraising, and teaching are just a sampling of the skills that can be exercised and enhanced

4.Friendship Fellowship was a primary reason Rotary was started in 1905, and it remains a major attraction. Today, with more than 30,000 Rotary clubs in over 160 countries, Rotarians have friends wherever they go. Rotary helps to build community as well as enduring friendships.

5.Cultural Diversity Rotary International is an association of local clubs in many countries. Clubs are open to members of every ethnic group, political persuasion, language, and religious belief. Rotary clubs contain a cross-section of the world’s leaders. They practice and promote tolerance.

6.Good Citizenship Membership in Rotary makes one a better citizen. Weekly Rotary club programs keep members informed about what is taking place in the community, nation, and world. Rotary’s expansive network of clubs and programs provides opportunities for service and interchange.

7.World Understanding Rotary members gain an understanding of humanitarian issues and have a significant impact on them through international service projects and exchange programs of RI and its Foundation. The promotion of peace is one of Rotary’s highest objectives.

8.Entertainment Every Rotary club and district hosts parties and activities that offer diversion from one’s personal and business life. Conferences, conventions, assemblies, and social events provide entertainment as well as Rotary information, education, and service.

9.Family Foundations Rotary sponsors some of the world’s largest youth exchange and educational exchange and scholarship programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training opportunities and mentoring for future leaders. They involve family members in a wide range of social and service activities.

10.Ethical Environment Rotarians practice a 4-Way Test that measures words and actions by their truthfulness, fairness, goodwill, and benefit to all. Encouraging high ethical standards in one’s profession and respect for all worthy vocations has been a hallmark of Rotary from its earliest days.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or doIs it the TRUTH?Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The Guide to Daily Living• Adopted for use by D3310 Conferences 1999 & 2001• Promoted for use in all clubs by D3310 Conference 2005• Submitted for consideration of the COL 2007, endorsed by D3310 Conference 2005

Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the Guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them:

FIRST HAVE I SPENT SOME TIME IN SELF-EXAMINATION? SECOND HAVE I SPENT QUALITY TIME WITH MY FAMILY? THIRD HAVE I GIVEN THE BEST TO MY WORK? FOURTH HAVE I GIVEN SOME TIME TO SOMEONE NEAR AND FAR?

The first question prompts us to evaluate ourselves and our ability to serve.

The second question reinforces our commitment to the family – our “intimate community of Life and Love”

The third question requests us to commit ourselves to work excellence and the practice of high ethical standards.

The fourth question reminds us of our duty to Lend A Hand, rendering compassionate service and working for world peace.

The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object Of Rotary.

the rotary foundationThe Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation.

The Foundation was created in 1917 by RI’s sixth president, Arch Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary “ to do good in the world “. It has grown from an initial contribution of US$25.50 to more than US$ 466 million in net assets at 30th June 2002.

The Rotary Foundation is structured as a not-for-profit corporation under US tax laws. A Board of Trustees who is appointed by the President of RI runs it. The programs of The Rotary Foundation are:

Humanitarian. Educational. Polio Plus.Foundation Alumni (eg, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship)

the rotary foundation ProgramsThrough Foundation grants and programs, Rotarians and other contributors can help change the world. They can finance a well for a village that lacks clean water, improve the environment, or provide scholarships to educate the next generation. The grants and programs available to Rotarians allow them to realize Rotary’s humanitarian mission throughout the world, including its number-one goal of eradicating polio.

PolioPlusSince the PolioPlus program’s inception in 1985, more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. The PolioPlus Grants is primarily applied for by National PolioPlus Committee chairs or a major partner agency, such as the World Health Organization or UNICEF. Support is available for eradication efforts in polio-endemic, recently endemic, and high-risk countries, including National Immunization Days, poliovirus transmission monitoring, and other activities.

Humanitarian Grants ProgramDisaster Recovery – Allows Rotarians to donate money in response to specific disasters.

District Simplified Grants – Support the service activities of districts locally and abroad.

Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants – Fund large-scale, two- to four-year projects that improve health, alleviate hunger, or promote human development.

Matching Grants – Provide matching funds for the international service projects of Rotary clubs and districts.

Volunteer Service Grants – Support the international travel of qualified Rotarians and their spouses to provide a needed service or plan a necessary project in a community.

Educational ProgramsAmbassadorial Scholarships – The Foundation sponsors one of the largest international scholarship programs in the world. Scholars study in a different country, where they serve as unofficial ambassadors of goodwill.

Group Study Exchange (GSE) – Annual awards are made to paired Rotary districts to cover travel expenses for a team of non-Rotarians from a variety of professions. Rotarian hosts organize a four- to six-week itinerary of vocational, educational, and cultural points of interest.

foundation of rotary clubs (singaPore)The Foundation of Rotary Clubs (Singapore) Limited was incorporated on 12 February 1993 as a public company limited by guarantee and not having a share capital

The Foundation shall partner the Singapore Government (Via MCYS & NCSS) in identifying needs to enhance the welfare of society and in providing appropriate community services to reduce gaps in services. The Rotary Family Service Centre (1997), Rotary Ayer-Rajah Student Care Centre (1999) and Rotary Counselling Centre (2002) are results of this partnership. www.rotaryfoundationsing.org

rotary family service centre, singaPoreEstablished in 1997 with support from Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd and Ministry of Community Development & Sports, Rotary Family Service Centre offers support to families and individuals through a range of comprehensive programmes and services.

We provide Counselling for various issues like marriage, parenting, grief, family violence, divorce, depression, mental illness and intergenerational problems. In addition to these we are one of the centres designated by MCYS to provide counselling to Youth on probation (13-18yrs old). We also help couples involved in Family Violence and mandated to go for counselling by the Family Court.

Case Managers at Rotary Family Service Centre provide financial advice to families in need of help. We liaise with HDB, Singapore Power, CDC and other agencies to assist families in need of financial assistance. We are one of the administering agencies for School Pocket Money Fund, Job Matching, Self Reliance programme, Food Rations and Meals from the Heart programme of Rotary Clubs. On an average, 80 families benefit every month from such services of Rotary Family Service Centre.

We regularly conduct workshops on issues such as Marriage Enrichment, Budgeting, Parenting, and Health. Special workshops are also conducted for individuals on parole, probation and victims of family violence.

At Rotary Family Service Centre we have a very active Senior Citizens’ group! Currently we provide free tuition for children belonging to low-income families and with poor academic performance.

In order to provide the abovementioned services to the needy, we need to incur the following expenses. Although we are subsidized by MCYS, we need to raise funds to cover the deficit. We would truly appreciate your kind contribution to help us help others. With IRAS granting IPC Status to the Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd, outright cash donations to Rotary Family Service Centre are entitled to double tax-deduction.

hoW to join usmembershiP requirementsResponsibilities of club membership

What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it. Mmembership requirements are designed to help members to participate & enjoy their Rotary experience. The ideal composition of a Rotary club reflects the community’s demographics, including professions, gender, age, and ethnicity. Such diversity enriches every aspect of the club’s fellowship and service.

AttendanceAttending weekly club meetings allows members to enjoy their club’s fellowship, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.

If members miss their own club’s meeting, they’re encouraged to expand their Rotary horizons by attending make-up meetings at any Rotary club in the world — a practice that guarantees Rotarians a warm welcome in communities around the globe. Find meeting places and times in the Official Directory or through the Club Locator (www.rotary.org)

You can now make-up anytime, during the 2 weeks before after your scheduled club meetingAttendance at District Conferences and Assemblies, is considered as 2 make-upsAttendance at own club’s committee BOD meeting is considered a make up.Make-ups can be done at any Rotary club in the world or with Interact/Rotaract meetings. You can even make-up online, from the comfort of your home in e-club
