First published in 1934’s Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book, this American blended whiskey cocktail may date to the 1890s. Named after the Suburban Handicap, a horserace at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, that began in 1884, the drink itself is a dark horse—rare, slightly exotic, and a winner.
