For most practitioners, the purpose of health promotion is to enhance the health of the people we touch, to help them strive for their vision of optimal health and to help them enjoy the best possible sense of quality of life.

For employers, health plans, communities and other funders, the purpose of health promotion is different . To be able to justify funding programs, the purpose must be to help achieve organization or community level goals . In some cases, these goals might be narrow and focused, like containing medical cost increases . Measurement of these types of goals would fit in the classic ROI (return on investment) bucket . In other cases, these goals might be broad and visionary, like having the healthiest and most productive workforce in the local community, the industry sector, or even in the world . Measurement of these goals would fit better in the more innovative ROAR (return on allocated resources) bucket . In reality, most organizations and communities will be somewhere in the middle, wanting to see both ROI and ROAR .

In this context, to be successful, practitioners need to be able to do at least three things well:

❶ Work with the organization’s or community’s leadership on three things: a) articulate its mission, long-term goals and short-term priorities b) clarify the contribution the program is expected to make to each of these and how that contribution will be measured, and c) develop programs that engage people and improve their health and quality of life, and also contribute to the organization’s or community’s goals .

❷ Implement and manage programs that engage people, and improve health and quality of life PLUS contribute to the organization’s or community’s goals, and do this in the most cost effective way .

❸ Measure the impact of the programs on these dual goals, share findings with leadership and adapt as necessary .

Most practitioners are skilled in developing and implementing programs to improve health and quality of life… so that is where they focus their attention . They focus less attention on engagement strategies, and achieving broader organization or community goals, and usually completely neglect working with leadership to clarify those goals, structure a program around them, or measure progress in meeting them .

This conference will focus on how to do all three well.

What is the Purpose of Health Promotion? Money, Health, or More?

Do we need to produce a huge ROI, or do we need to engage people, improve health and better serve the organization’s

or community’s broader goals?

aboutKeynote Speakers

An American Plate That is Palatable for Human and Planetary HealthWalter Willett, MD, DrPH, has focused much of his work over the last 35 years on the development of methods, using both questionnaire and biochemical approaches, to study the effects of diet on the occurrence of major diseases . He has applied these methods starting in 1980 in the Nurses’ Health Studies I and II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study .

Together, these cohorts that include nearly 300,000 men and women with repeated dietary assessments are providing the most detailed information on the long-term health consequences of food choices .

Dr . Willett has published over 1,500 articles, primarily on lifestyle risk factors for heart disease and cancer, and has written the textbook, Nutritional Epidemiology, published by Oxford University Press . He also has four books for the general public, Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating, which has appeared on most major bestseller lists, Eat, Drink, and Weigh Less, co-authored with Mollie Katzen, The Fertility Diet, co-authored with Jorge Chavarro and Pat Skerrett and most recently Thinfluence co-authored with Malissa Wood and Dan Childs .

Dr . Willett is the most cited nutritionist internationally, and is among the five most cited persons in all fields of clinical science . He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the recipient of many national and international awards for his research .

Why Good Things Happen to Good People: A Scientific and Real World Perspective on the Benefits of Helping OthersDoes helping others, either informally or through volunteering, really have the side-effect of contributing to the happiness, mental well-being, health and even longevity of the helper? In general yes, but specifically in what ways, to what extent and under what circumstances? How do these benefits manifest in specific subgroups (e .g ., adolescents, individuals with depression, older adults, individuals with substance or process addictions, individuals with hypertension, etc .)? Are we at a point where it makes sense to prescribe (Rx) or recommend helping others as a pathway to wellness? How can this be achieved effectively?

A transformative speaker, Stephen Post has inspired thousands with the best of medical knowledge, based on thirty years of research . Across North America, Australia, Europe, Japan and India his positive psychology message impacts happiness, health, success, creativity and even longevity .

STEPHEN G . POST, PhDDirector, Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics and Professor of Bioethics, Stony Brook University

WALTER C . WILLETT, MD, DrPHChair and Frederick J . Stare Professor, Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health

“ It was by far the best conference I ever attended. The learning effects were huge, the speakers were all very exciting and diverse and the general atmosphere was very pleasant. Thank you so much for a memorable week. ”

Evaluation of Workplace Health Promotion ProgramsRon Z. Goetzel, PhDSenior Scientist and Director, Institute for Health and Productivity Studies (IHPS), Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health; Vice President, Consulting and Applied Research, Truven Health Analytics

One of the greatest challenges facing health promotion professionals is documenting the performance and impact of their programs . To justify ongoing support for health promotion initiatives, program managers often declare that health promotion and

disease prevention are “the right thing to do .” However, program sponsors require proof that these programs are worth the investment, offer value, and produce a positive return-on-investment (ROI) . This intensive training seminar will provide the skills and insights for designing and implementing effective measurement and evaluation programs for workplace health promotion programs .

Designing Sustainable Behavior ChangeMichael Kim, MPP, MBA CEO and Founder, Habit Design®Maria Elena Lara, PhD Principal Scientist and Investigator, Habit Design®

While health promotion can motivate employees to make episodic, temporary changes, when it comes to creating lasting results, learning the skill of creating new habits is what is vital for long-term Behavior Change . Developed from eight years of clinical testing of evidence-based research from over 100 behavioral researchers - including Dr . Martin

Seligman (UPenn), Dr . Albert Bandura (Stanford), Dr . Ann Graybiel (MIT), Dr . BJ Fogg (Stanford), and many others - this two-day workshop covers best practices in the design of sustainable Behavior Change systems that have led to the successful training of unconscious, daily habits .

Leveraging the Fusion of Organizational Development and Employee Wellbeing to Create a Thriving Workplace Culture

Rosie Ward, PhD, MPH, MCHES, BCC, Certified Intrinsic Coach®, Certified Valuations Specialist – FRPrincipal and Co-Founder, Salveo Partners, LLC; Director of Health Coaching Education, Fairview Physician Associates

Research continues to emerge showing that organizations that intentionally create and nurture their workplace culture financially outperform their competitors and have highly engaged employees . This goes far beyond what our field frequently refers to as a “culture of health” or a “healthy culture” and includes addressing the underlying perceptions and

attitudes that frame the entire employee experience . This workshop will help participants to better position themselves to align with leadership development and employee engagement efforts to leverage the fusion of organizational and employee wellbeing to improve the workplace culture, the employee experience and the employment brand in the marketplace .

The WELCOA National Summit will bring an extraordinary group of voices together to discuss new wellness interventions that will reframe wellness and help employees truly thrive. Explore new

concepts like presence, purpose and creativity, and rediscover new approaches to increasing physical activity and promoting better nutrition and sleep.
