Today's Focus: Our faithfulness as Christians is a response to the faithfulness God has shown
toward us.

INVOCATION
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: And also with you.
CONFESSION OF SINS
P: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I
have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to
be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

First Lesson .......................................................................................................................... Ruth 1: 1-19
1 In the days when the judges ruled,[a] there was a famine in the land. So a man from
Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the
country of Moab. 2 The man’s name was Elimelek, his wife’s name was Naomi, and the
names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from
Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there. 3 Now Elimelek, Naomi’s
husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite women, one
named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both
Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her
husband. 6 When Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had come to the aid of his
people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return
home from there. 7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had
been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah. 8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s
home. May the LORD show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead
husbands and to me. 9 May the LORD grant that each of you will find rest in the home of
another husband.” Then she kissed them goodbye and they wept aloud 10 and said to
her, “We will go back with you to your people.” 11 But Naomi said, “Return home, my
daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who
5
could become your husbands? 12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have
another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me—even if I had a husband
tonight and then gave birth to sons— 13 would you wait until they grew up? Would you
remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you,
because the LORD’s hand has turned against me!” 14 At this they wept aloud again. Then
Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her. 15 “Look,” said Naomi,
“your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.” 16 But
Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will
go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my
God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me,
be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” 18 When Naomi realized
that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her. 19 So the two women
went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole
town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”
Psalm 111 ..............................................................................................................................................p. 106 in CW
Great are the works of the LORD;*
they are pondered by all who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic are his deeds,*
6
and his righteousness endures forever.
He has caused his wonders to be remembered;* the LORD is gracious and compassionate.
Refrain
The works of his hands are faithful and just;*
all his precepts are trustworthy.
He provided redemption for his people;* he ordained his covenant forever.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;* all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Refrain
Second Lesson .......................................................................................................... 2 Timothy 2: 8-13 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my
gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But
God’s word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the
elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we
endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we
are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
Verse of the Day
P: Alleluia. This is the Lord, we trust in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation. Alleluia. (Isaiah 25:9b cf. NIV)

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and
Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[a] met him. They
stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went,
they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising
God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a
Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?18 Has
no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?”19 Then he said to
him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
8
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

WORDS OF INSTITUTION
P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
