In 2017, two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey are reflected – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. Parent Interactions with Other Students on Site Just a reminder about the important role parents and caregivers have when interacting with children on school grounds, in particular not their own. As we all know, the school yard can be a place where children are interacting and can be playing with or alongside friends or students who they may not know at all. Generally this is a harmonious time; however at times problems or misunderstandings do occur. If you as a parent witness something that causes concern, please report it to the duty teacher or a staff member. Staff have the skills and background information and are able to manage student situations appropriately. So, please do not approach students in any way, Modbury School Preschool to Year 7 must be a place where all children feel safe. Having parents look to sort out issues or have their say does not build a sense of the collaborative and supportive community that we are. We look forward to seeing our parents and caregivers interact in a caring and constructive manner with all students.

Reconciliation in the North Morning Tea The Year 4—7 Aboriginal students each invited a peer to attend a morning tea organised by the TTG and Salisbury Councils. Frank Wanganeen was the Presenter and gave the Kaurna Welcome, parts spoken in the Kaurna language. Jack Buckskin talked about the importance of keeping languages alive. Robert Taylor played the didgerdoo and guitar and sang songs ranging from ballads, rap and opera. During the morning students were invited to serve themselves morning tea. It was interesting to note that the students commented on the great range of cake, fruit and slices there were to choose from. A good feed was had by all. On their return to school the students gathered and had a group conversation about what Reconciliation means to them. The following were some of the key points that the students were able to readily identify: Celebrating cultures Coming together Being treated fairly Acknowledging different languages

Cyber Safety On Monday 15 th May the students from Learning Community C had Andrew from SAPOL visit to talk about Cybersafety. He covered a variety of topics including social media use, appropriate websites and he also talked about the importance of password security. He talked with the students about Cyberbullying and answered questions they had about this. It was an informative session which was very relevant to the students, recognising their use of technology and the importance of being aware. As a follow on from this there was a parent presentation on Tuesday 16th May at 6.00 which provided information about parent responsibilities and addressed parent concerns. Parents had the opportunity to ask questions and there was a time for discussion provided. If parents would like to access information about Cybersafety the website link is https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/ Here is some feedback from the students about Cybersafety

Today I learned not to give out your address and password and not to say my name while playing or recording something. Tyronne

The things I learnt were, that it is more efficient to change your password more often and make your passwords more trickier so people can’t easily get into your account. My question is, is it recommended to use snapchat, instagram or facebook under age 13? Ryan

Today I learnt that Cybersafety is more important than bullying and that it’s recommended to be 13 to play Clash of Clans. What is the difference between Facebook and Instagram and why do we need two? How do you turn of the location on your I-pad, Samsung etc? Abigail

I learnt that cyberbullying someone can get you in serious trouble. Why do people cyberbully? Also if you cyberbully do you get arrested? Ashkan

Today I learned that there is a such thing as YouTube Kids instead of using YouTube which can cause problems. I also learned that cyberbullying can cause issues with yourself or other people. Question - Why do people cyberbully? Prashan

Today after the Cybersafety presentation I learned that there is something called Youtube kids instead of just normal Youtube. I also learned that only 17 and older kids are allowed to use Kik. Kenoli

Today I learnt that you need to be 17 to have Kik instead of 18 because last time I thought Andrew said 18 instead of 17. What shouldn't you put up on Youtube? Riley

Room 12 and 14 Art

In Art, we read the Dreaming “How The Kangaroo Got Her Pouch”. In small groups we created sculptures using clay to show the highlights of the story. In the story, after performing acts of kindness, Mother Kangaroo was gifted a dilly bag from the Spirit of the Creator. She tied it around her waist and it turned into a pouch for her to keep her joey warm and safe. Here are some of the stages of our art work.
