This week our Year 12 students will be a ending their annual three day Retreat.  This is an important opportunity for them to spend me in reflec on, prayer and companionship.  We hold them especially in our prayers and give thanks for the staff who will guide,

Two weeks ago we welcomed three visi ng exchange students from Japan and this week we warmly welcome our visi ng French         students from Bordeaux who arrived in Brisbane on Sunday and who will be with us for the next two weeks.  Another group of               exchange students from Japan, arrive next week.  It will be wonderful to have them in our school enriching our experiences and our cultural understandings. 

Today we enjoyed the company of many visi ng parents who joined us for our parent “Welcome Day”.  It was a delight to see so many of you here enjoying the daily Loreto experience with the girls and their teachers. 

 

We pray for the fragile ecology of the heart and mind.   

The sense of meaning.  So finely assembled and balanced  

and so easily overturned.  The careful ongoing construc on  

of love.  As painful and exhaus ng as the struggle for truth  

and as easily abandoned.  

Hard fought and won are the shi ing sounds of this sacred  

ground, this ecology.  Easy to desecrate and difficult to defend, 

this vulnerable joy, this exposed faith, this precious order.  This sanity.  

We shall be careful.  With others and with ourselves.

Next week we look forward to welcoming our special visitors, as part of “Mary Ward Connect”, from Loreto Ballarat and Loreto                   Marryatville in Adelaide. 

“Mary Ward Connect” is an exchange program for Year 10’s where we send groups of six Year 10 girls with one staff member, each to one of two other Loreto schools and similarly we welcome to Loreto visitors from these schools to Loreto Coorparoo. 

I wish to thank all of the students, staff and families involved for your generosity and support.

TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà Year 8 White, Green and Blue were asked to create a design for the front page of their Visual Diaries. The design had to reflect their ideas about Art. The challenge was to create a symbolic work that did not rely on predictable images such as paint brushes and pallets. To encourage thinking flexibly the students worked with thumbnail sketches to explore at least four ideas as they developed a creative and imaginative solution to the task. The Art Department is looking for ice-cream containers, large plastic containers with screw lids (plain flour, fruit containers etc.) and any lace, ribbon, material, or junk we can use in our Animal Sculpture Unit using mixed media. Wxutà|Çz axãá Last Friday our Year 8 debaters were given the afternoon lessons to attend a workshop here at Loreto. After a pizza lunch, they learned much about the basics of debating from Ms Nolan, Mrs McKeown and myself. We were most impressed with the girls’ enthusiasm and participation. The QDU has published the draw for this season. All debaters are encouraged to visit the QDU website and to ensure that they attend the meetings called by the coaches. Good luck to you all! `âá|v axãá Brass Ensemble Information Application forms to join the Year 8 Beginner Brass Ensemble were due to the Music Department today (Tuesday 26 February). If you are interested but have not yet returned your application, please do so tomorrow! At the start of each year, all Year Eights are offered the chance to apply for a position in the Beginner Brass Ensemble. This group is designed to give students an opportunity to try ensemble music making for as low a cost as possible to parents. For students accepted into the group, all instruments are supplied by the school free of charge. Additionally, students offered places on Trombone, French Horn, Tuba or Euphonium will have Music Tuition Fees substantially subsidized. Last week, Mr Langford spoke to all Year 8 classes about this ensemble, and offered students the chance to apply to play Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba or Euphonium.

Classroom Music Excursion Next Wednesday 6 March, all students studying classroom Music from Years 9 - 12 will travel to QPAC to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in their annual Secondary Showcase Concert. This year’s concert is entitled “Musical Revolutionaries” and will include works about “significant uprisings or a revolutionary heroes, including Beethoven’s military tribute to the Duke of Wellington and Shostakovich’s sinister Tenth Symphony’s which is a portrait of the cruel Russian dictator Joseph Stalin”. The concert will also feature a performance by the winner of the 2013 Young Instrumentalist Competition. Year 10 students who are hosting Mary Ward Connect students, and Year 11/12 students hosting French Exchange students are invited to bring their host sister/brother with them to this concert. Jazz Ensemble Sectionals These were originally scheduled for Friday lunches. However, as a number of involved students have other commitments on this day, we will run these sectionals every Thursday lunch in 705. While initially only members of the rhythm section will be involved, all students in the ensemble should keep this timeslot free from other permanent commitments as every-one in the group will become involved at some stage. String Quartet The String Quartet will rehearse on Friday mornings from 7:15 am to 8:15 in room 702 starting this Friday 1 March. Don’t forget that your first performance for the year will be at St James School Coorparoo on Sunday 17 March from 12:30pm to 1.00pm. Ben Langford - Director of Music

câuÄ|v fÑxt~|Çz Last Tuesday evening Maddie Blanchfield and Anthea Bach entered the Lions Youth of the Year competition. They both gave a prepared speech and made two impromptu speeches. There were two awards given on the night, one for Best Speaker and one, as Club Champion. It is with great pride that I announce that Maddie Blanchfield won the Best Speaker prize and Anthea Bach won the Overall Champion.

This means that Anthea progresses to the next round of the Zone B Final at Yeronga RSL next Saturday at 2.00pm. If anyone is interested in supporting Anthea, they need to RSVP to me on Wednesday as we need to give the caterers

numbers. Good luck, Anthea! Congratulations to both girls! They were confident, poised and articulate!

We had a meeting for all Public Speakers on Monday 25th February. Thank you to those girls who attended. It is not too late to join up, so if you are interested, please give your name to Mrs O’Neill. Details of the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition were discussed.

In other news, Maddie Lloyd has entered into the YMCA QLD Youth Parliament. We wish Maddie luck too! We will hold our next meeting in a fortnight’s time. See you there!

c 9 Y axãá Drop Curtain Update Some of you may be wondering what happened to the ‘drop curtain’. By way of background, our major project as a P & F last year was to raise money to erect a curtain in the Mary Ward Centre to separate physical education classes which are conducted simultaneously. It was to have been put up over the Christmas holidays but a new lighting and sound system needed to be installed first and the stage curtain was replaced. We are pleased to advise that work on the drop curtain is scheduled to proceed in the June holidays so, fingers crossed, that’s when you can see what your P & F levies have paid for. We are yet to determine the 2013 fund raising project but will advise you as soon as we do.

P & F Years 8 - 12 Student Dance A traditional event on the school calendar is the Student Dance. The countdown is on for this event which will be held in the Mary Ward Centre on Friday 15 March. Please note that if you are paying by instalments (direct debit or other method) this account is not overdue. Statements are issued by the Finance Department of the college on a regular basis to provide parents with an up-to-date status of their accounts.

fà [xÄxÇt XåvâÜá|ÉÇ Last Thursday 14th February the Year 11 Ancient History students spent the day on St Helena Island working as archaeologists. The girls used a variety of primary sources (building plans, photographs, aerial photographs) and archaeological evidence to string line both the Superintendent’s House and the prison cells. From this they were encouraged to reflect on the conditions that existed on St Helena during its time as a prison for the penal settlement of Brisbane. This led them to identify societal attitudes, values and practices to punishment, class and racism and how these were present on St Helena during the 1800’s. From this investigation the girls were able to fully comprehend how the process of archaeology allows ‘history to stare us in the face.’ Deb Bauer - Ancient History

lxtÜ DD fxÅ|@YÉÜÅtÄ The Year 11 Semi-Formal is being held on Friday 1st March 2013, 7.30pm – 11.00pm, at the Greek Club, South Brisbane. The Year 11 girls are looking forward to their Semi-Formal with eager anticipation. The aim of the evening is to provide an introduction into the etiquette and delight derived from a more formal occasion than most girls would have experienced at this stage of their lives. Inviting a partner adds to this sense of celebration and responsibility. The Greek Club venue and the attendance of Year 11 Homeroom teachers will provide the girls with a safe, festive and formal environment in which to celebrate their important transition into the Senior School. The girls have been fully briefed about expectations of dress, behavior and partners. We ask that parents support us by personally delivering their daughters and partners to the Greek Club punctually at 7.30pm and then again promptly picking them up at 11.00pm. No one will be permitted to leave the venue before 11.00pm. All partners must produce a current ID card from their school and your daughters have been asked to politely introduce their partners to their Homeroom teachers. Whilst Loreto College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’, we are aware that some girls may progress from the Semi-Formal to other celebrations. The responsibility and legal liability for the safety of the girls moves back to their parents at this stage but the girls also need to be aware that their actions for the entire evening will reflect upon the College. It is timely, therefore to remind parents about the issue of alcohol consumption by underage drinkers. Many girls may have their parents believing at this stage that ALL girls will be attending a post Semi-formal party and ALL girls will be consuming alcohol. This is not true but these beliefs contribute to the normalization and cultural acceptance of drinking and often lead to episodes of binge drinking which can seriously harm the health of your daughters. It is the NORM at this age to not drink alcohol at all. It has come to my attention that some girls in Year 11 are organising a post party without parental supervision through a site “MetroMouse Entertainment” and that the invitations to this event are “OPEN”, that is, not restricted to Loreto students and their partners. Consequently unlimited alcohol will be readily available to all because older patrons can purchase it for underage students. This of course opens up a huge range of dangers and liability issues and is very divisive to the year level as a whole. We also have some visiting Japanese and French exchange students who are attending the Semi-Formal and they have been advised they are not permitted to attend this event and are not permitted to consume any alcohol at any function. So please take a strong stance by saying “NO” to your daughter about attending this function. If your daughter is planning on attending any Post-Formal function, please ensure her safety by:

Obtaining all the details of the organisers including the phone number of their parents.

Checking that there will be sufficient adult supervision at a safe and suitable venue, security at the door/gate, water, soft drinks and food.

Checking that there is a restricted guest list.

Taking a strong stance against the consumption of alcohol by underage teenagers.

Personally delivering and picking up your daughter from the party at a pre-arranged time.

Making sure your daughter keeps a fully charged mobile phone with her throughout the party.

Discussing these harm minimization strategies with your daughter. I hope that your daughter has a most enjoyable evening – one that she will remember fondly for the rest of her life. Fiona Meecham –Year 11 Coordinator

This Week’s Draw – Round 3: 26 February

Girls are reminded that if they are travelling away from Loreto, they are to change into their playing uniform at lunchtime and report to the MWC at 3.05pm. If parents intend on collecting their daughter from the ‘away’ venue or Churchie, a note must be given to Mrs Gore by morning tea on match day. All buses aim to return to Loreto between 5.30-5.45pm, depending on traffic. We wish all teams the best of luck. Spectators are most welcome, we’d love to see you there! If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Volleyball Results This was a harder week of Volleyball for most teams, with many tight tussles. It was pleasing to see many girls ‘pull out’ strong performances to assist their team. Overall, Loreto still won 7 out of 8 matches played. A super effort!

Open A - The team overcame a very sluggish start in this match to eventually record an excellent 2 – 0 win over Our Lady’s College. As the match progressed, all of the girls played an excellent team game with some very good court positioning and calling being the highlights.

Open B - The girls are off to a brilliant start this season, winning their second game 3 sets-0. Great effort was shown by all girls on the court throughout the game. Keep up the great effort girls. Junior A - The Junior A volleyball team had another strong 2 sets-1 win against Stuartholme. After narrowly losing the first set, the girls adapted to the outdoor conditions to dominate the next two sets. Strong serving from Kate O’Sullivan in the final two sets kept the girls on top. Junior B - Congratulations to Junior B on another convincing victory over Mt St Michaels, 3 sets to nil. The team improved their communication and their passing this week. Special mention to Nikki Foley on her consistent serving. Junior C - A narrow loss to our Junior C team going down 2 sets to 1 to Brigidine College. The girls were unlucky to lose their first two sets by only a few points. Great spirit by all players with some impressive service returns. Special mention to Brigitte Mastry on her fantastic run of serves. Junior D - The Junior D team backed up last week’s victory with another spirited win against Brigidine College last Wednesday. The girls went down narrowly in the first set before bouncing back to take the second set convincingly. The third set was a nail biter as the girls strung together their second win from as many matches. Great passion and team encouragement was shown by all players as they look forward to round 3 of the volleyball season. Notable Performances; Francis Wong and Christina Stephanos. Junior E - An exciting win, 3 sets to nil over Brigidine College, for this enthusiastic team, their first for the season! The entire team served really well, in particular Lydia Weir, (who also was a great talker on court) and Bronte Finn. The team is looking forward to utilising their newly learnt spiking skills! Junior F - This week the Junior F team had another successful win, defeating St Rita’s 3 - 0. All girls showed enormous skill improvement in serving and court play. AFL Results Round 2 - Junior AFL This week the game was cancelled due to bad weather. This means the Junior AFL team misses out playing against Lourdes Hill1 this season unless there is a reshuffle in the fixtures. Next week we move on undefeated to play Our Lady’s at Smithfield which is situated at the back of the Bowls Club in Norman Park. All parents and supporters are welcome to join in and support the team. A reminder to all players, training is on this Monday morning starting at 6:45am. Your AFL Coach will be waiting. Water polo Each team is playing at the Somerville House swimming pool. Players MUST be at the venue 30 minutes prior to the game.

This Week’s Draw – Week 13: 2 March

 All teams must wear the current Loreto swimming togs, Loreto swim cap and a mouth guard. Please check your nails are cut before the game. Results U14’s - The under 14’s had an unlucky loss against Mt St Michael’s College. The game was even right up until the 3rd quarter. Unfortunately little mistakes from the Loreto team cost the game. However it was a good effort. Coach: Oliver Chambers U15’s - The under 15’s had an exceptional win against All Hallows’ leading by at least 3 goals throughout the game. The de-fence and counter attack were strong. Nothing in attack could stop Loreto’s fast breaks. Outstanding effort girls! especially after a hard swim training session during swim camp. Coach: James Duffy U18’s - The under 18’s had a big game against the Warriors and their own coach. The local derby was fun, it also gave the girls an opportunity to pick up on a few moves to improve their game. There was some excellent shooting as well as defence. Good effort on the day. CSGSSA SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Monday, 11 March is the Catholic Girl’s Swimming Carnival at Chandler. All Year 8 and 12 students will be attending to support our Swim Team. This is a wonderful opportunity for Big Sisters and Little Sisters to get to know each other and for Year 12 students to induct Year 8 students into some important Loreto traditions, such as the College war cry.

Attendance is compulsory on this day as on any other. Students who do attend feel very let down by other students who stay away without valid reason. We would like this to be an occasion to build community rather than damage it. All non-attendance will be checked. Students are not to bring magazines, or electronic devices such as IPods. They will be fully engaged in cheering on our swimmers. Dress for the day for spectators is perfect formal school uniform – hat is not required. Students in the swim team will receive a letter with specific details regarding events, uniform, arrival and departure times. All students should bring food and plenty of water. Only very limited canteen facilities will be available for a short time. Students will be travelling to and from the carnival by bus. No student will be able to leave from Chandler unless they bring a parental note to Ms Carty beforehand and a parent is there to collect them by 2.00pm. ST PETER’S LUTHERAN COLLEGE SWIMMING MEET

On Friday 1 March our swimming team will be competing at the St Peter’s Lutheran College Swim Meet. Our team have the opportunity to do time trials and improve their times in the 50m pool. A bus has been arranged to transport the girls to St Peter’s Lutheran College (66 Harts Rd, Indooroopilly) directly after school finishes. The warm up is at 4.30pm and the meet will start at 5.00pm. The finish time is approximately 6.30pm to 7.00pm. Parents/guardians are required to collect their daughter after the meet at St Peters Lutheran College pool. There is staff supervision at these allocated times. On Wednesday mornings starting 6 March until 13 March (7:00am - 7:50am), Yoga will be offered for all students at a cost of $5 per session. Fascinate Young Writers Festival 2013

Mount Gravatt PCYC in association with the Garden City Library and Macgregor State High School present, for the 8th year running, the Fascinate Young Writers Festival. This festival is to encourage young people aged between 8 – 18 years to submit a piece of writing that demonstrates their creativity and originality. Each piece will be judged on the merit of the work and the Judges are looking for quality writing rather than quantity. Please try to put your effort into a piece which will stand out! There are three age groups for the 2013 competition:

Primary 8 – 11 years of age Upper Primary/Secondary 12 – 14 years of age Senior 15 – 18 years of age

The award ceremony will be held at Garden City Library on 22 nd August, 2013. Genres of Writing: A) Short Story (a piece of writing which follows the rules of short story writing)

Length of work

Lower Primary: Maximum of 800 words Upper Primary/Secondary: Maximum of 1,000 words Senior: Maximum of 1,000 words

B) Poetry

Primary- Traditional verse/rhyming poetry Upper Primary/Secondary - as above but can include Free Verse Length of work:
