25TH MARCH 2018

PALM SUNDAY

The Mass begins outside for the blessing of palms and the procession.

Priest The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

All and also with you.

Priest My brothers and sisters in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing by works of love, prayer and self-sacrifice for the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection. Today we come together to begin this solemn celebration in union with Christians throughout the world. Christ enters his own city to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us go with him in faith and love, so that, united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life.

At this point the palm crosses are blessed.

Priest Let us pray

God our Saviour, your Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die, bless these palms and make them holy. Let them be for us signs of his victory; and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

The Palm crosses are distributed now.

The Palm Sunday Gospel: Mark 11:1-11 The Lord be with you: And also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark:

Glory to you O Lord.

When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'" They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve."

This is the Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you O Christ.

Priest Let us go forth, praising Jesus our Messiah

All In the name of Christ. Amen.

Processional hymn 509 All glory laud and honour

Hymn once in church 511 Ride on ride on in majesty

The Prayer of the Day Almighty and everlasting God, in your tender love towards our human race you sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross, grant that we may we follow the example of his patience and humility, and also share in the glory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer after Communion Faithful God, may we who share this banquet glory in the corss of our Lord Jesus Christ, our salvation, life and hope, who reigns as Lord now and for ever. Amen.

The Profession of Faith and the Peace Priest Let us affirm our faith in Jesus Christ Though he was divine, he did not cling to equality with God

but made himself nothing. All Taking the form of a slave, he was born in human likeness.

He humbled himself and was obedient to death, even the death of the cross.

Priest Therefore God has raised him on high, and given him the name above every name:

All that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, and every voice proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:7-11

The peace of the Lord be always with you

All and also with you

Offertory hymn 86 My song is love unknown

The Eucharist continues with the Offertory Prayers on page 5

Hymn during Holy Communion 1. From heaven you came, helpless babe, Entered our world, your glory veiled; Not to be served but to serve, And give your life that we might live. This is our God, the Servant King, He calls us now to follow him, To bring our lives as a daily offering Of worship to the Servant King.

2. There in the garden of tears, My heavy load he chose to bear; His heart with sorrow was torn, 'Yet not my will but yours,' he said. This is our God ....etc..

3. Come, see his hands and his feet, The scars that speak of sacrifice, Hands that flung stars into space, To cruel nails surrendered.

This is our God ....etc.

4. So let us learn how to serve, And in our lives enthrone him; Each other's needs to prefer, For it is Christ we're serving.

This is our God, .... etc...

Hymn 1 1 How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure.

2. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished.

3. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer; But this I know with all my heart - His wounds have paid my ransom.

Hymn 3 1 Go to dark Gethsemane, You who feel the tempter's pow'r; Your Redeemer's conflict see; Watch with Him one bitter hour; Turn not from His griefs away; Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

2. Follow to the judgment hall; View the Lord of life arraigned; O the worm-wood and the gall! O the pangs His soul sustained! Shun not suff'ring, shame, or loss; Learn of Him to bear the cross.

3. Calv'ry's mournful mountain climb, There adoring at His feet, Mark the miracle of time, God's own sacrifice complete: "It is finished!" Hear the cry; Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

Hymn 4 1 To mock your reign, O dearest Lord, they made a crown of thorns; set you with taunts along that road from which no one returns. They did not know, as we do now, that glorious is your crown; that thorns would flower upon your brow, your sorrows heal our own.

2. A sceptered reed, O patient Lord, they thrust into your hand, and acted out their grim charade to its appointed end. They did not know, as we do now, though empires rise and fall, your Kingdom shall not cease to grow till love embraces all.

Hymn 5 1 Alas! and did my Saviour bleed, and did my Sovereign die! Would he devote that sacred head for sinners such as I? 3 Well might the sun in darkness hide, and shut its glories in, when God, the mighty maker, died for his own creature's sin.

2. Was it for crimes that I have done, he groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree! 4 But drops of tears can ne'er repay the debt of love I owe. Here, Lord, I give myself away; 'tis all that I can do.

Hymn 6 1 When I needed a neighbour, Were you there, were you there? When I needed a neighbour, were you there? And the creed and the colour And the name won't matter, Were you there? 3.

2. I was hungry and thirsty, Were you there, were you there? I was hungry and thirsty, were you there? And the creed and the colour And the name won't matter, Were you there? 4.

I was cold, I was naked, Were you there, were you there? I was cold, I was naked, were you there? And the creed and the colour And the name won't matter, Were you there?

Wherever you travel, I'll be there, I'll be there. Wherever you travel, I'll be there. And the creed and the colour And the name won't matter, I'll be there.

If you can, please stand after ‘When I needed a neighbour’ as we hear of the crucifixion and death of Jesus.

Hymn 7

1 Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

2. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

3. Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

4. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

Intercessory prayer

O God, who would fold both heaven and earth in one single peace: Let the design of your great love lighten upon the waste of our wraths and sorrows: and give peace to your Church, peace among nations, peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts: all this we ask through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
