A YEARLY GARDEN PLANNER
January: Mulch any borderline hardy plants with compost or straw. Harvest
leeks, parsnips, cabbage and sprouts as needed and enjoy browsing through the
seed catalogues.
February: This month is your last chance to plant bare root trees and shrubs.
Don't forget to ventilate cold frames and greenhouses on mild days.
March: Divide and replant snowdrops. Cut back grasses, late flowering fuchsias
and hydrangeas before new growth begins. Plant broad beans and sweet peas
under cover.
April: Protect fruit trees from late frosts. Sow winter cabbage and plant early
potatoes in containers. Dead head spring flowers.
May: If the ground is warm enough sow early crop carrots, beetroot, cauliflower,
peas and lettuce. Earth up potatoes and plant main crop in the ground. Don't
forget that lawns need frequent cutting and the weeds just love this time of year.
June: Plant outdoor beans. Plant up summer pots but protect from cold nights.
Undercover sow courgettes, cucumbers, swede and French beans. Harden off
outdoor tomato plants.
July: Sow nasturtiums between beans to keep away blackfly. Harvest early sown
garlic and onions. Don’t forget to enter produce and flowers (and your baking) in
Birstwith Show.
August: Keep harvesting fruit and veg, this encourages more produce. Dead
head flowers, trim back herbs to encourage pungent new growth but don't forget
to let some flower. The bees love thyme and chive flowers. Enjoy a glass of wine
in the sunshine and admire your handiwork.
September: Cut back early flowering shrubs to generate a second flush of flow-
ers. Dead head roses and dahlias. Harvest apples, pears and damsons.
October: Begin to cut back summer border plants. Plant garlic and onion sets.
Plant bulbs and wallflowers for spring colour. Sweep up and compost leaves.
November: Trim back shrubs especially buddleia, lavender and summer climb-
ers to keep them compact. Lift dahlia tubers and store in a dry cool shed. Plant
fruit canes and trees.
December: Keep warm by tidying the shed, turning the compost and clearing
borders of perennial die back. Pick Brussels sprouts and enjoy your Christmas
dinner. Happy gardening.

HANDWRITING
CLASS 507
My Family’s Fond of Gadgets
My family's fond of gadgets
and new technology.
My mother likes her radio.
My father likes TV.
My sister likes to dance around
the house with headphones on.
My brother plays on his PC
until the break of dawn.
The baby has a smartphone
and a touchscreen-tablet too.
If we had pets, I'm sure
that even they would have a few.
We chat with instant messaging.
We email and we text.
We're always looking forward
to the gadget we'll get next.
The power went out recently.
That day was like no other.
Our screens went blank and, strange
but true,
we talked to one another.
CLASS 527
My Cow Bess
I'd like to introduce you to my cow.
Her name is Bess.
She has a special talent which
I know you'd never guess.
She's fond of eating chocolate
which I feed her every day.
The chocolate makes her happy so
she starts to swing and sway.
She jiggles and she joggles.
She wiggles and she whirls.
She boogies and she bounces.
She taps and twists and twirls.
She shivers and she shudders.
She quivers and she quakes.
I feed her chocolate candy and
she gives me chocolate shakes.

CLASS 595 All My Great Excuses
I started on my homework
but my pen ran out of ink.
My hamster ate my homework.
My computer's on the blink.
I accidentally dropped it
in the soup my mom was cooking.
My brother flushed it down the toilet
when I wasn't looking.
My mother ran my homework
through the washer and the dryer.
An airplane crashed into our house.
My homework caught on fire.
Tornadoes blew my notes away.
Volcanoes struck our town.
My notes were taken hostage
by an evil killer clown.
Some aliens abducted me.
I had a shark attack.
A pirate swiped my homework
and refused to give it back.
I worked on these excuses
so darned long my teacher said,
"I think you'll find it's easier
to do the work instead."
CLASS 547 Teachers
Some are nice, and some are mean
But most are somewhere in-between.

BHS Entry Schedule 2015 22
Last day for entries: Friday 17th July
HANDY HINTS COME AND ENTER OUR SHOW (ANYONE CAN DO IT!) It is easy to get involved and we would like to encourage as many people as pos-
sible to enter, even if you haven't done it before.
Below are a few hints on how to make the process a little easier.
Get your entry form in on time as we can’t accept late entries. We have
changed our entry routine this year so read the “How to Enter” section
closely.
Make sure the information on your entry form is right. Whatever is written on
your entry form will be what you receive entry cards for. We are really sorry
but if it isn't right we can’t change it on show day, even if you have brought
your prize winning entry with you!!!!
Make sure you read the class correctly. Bring the correct number of items
required and make sure they are the right dimensions.
Overall appearance is really important. Wash your veg, put your baking on
clean pates or use the paper plates and doilies available. Don’t use the same
plates with all your entries otherwise the judge will be able to recognise your
produce.
We know that some classes have a lot of information included and all the
rules and regulations aren't the most exciting but read them through carefully
as they hold key information.
NEW THIS YEAR
EXHIBITOR PRIZE DRAW All exhibitors will be entered into a prize draw this year. This will be drawn by the
show prince/princess during the opening ceremony on show day. The winner will
receive 4 free meal passes for our show evening party, a prize worth £20.
