That’s an interesting question. I believe the impact has been tremendous. Allow me to explain my views

by shortly mentioning the following aspects:

1a. Firstly, electrical equipment has completely changed the way in which we communicate with one

happen, you must realize that you cannot expect any pity from anyone, as you are expected to be perfect.

3a. Lastly, I am of the opinion that it is hard to cope with fame.

3b. What I mean to say is that, from what I have seen happening to many pop stars, many of them are

will invariably be famous.

3a. Lastly, I am of the opinion that there are people who become famous because of the mistakes that

they have made.

by deciding what are my principles, believes, customs, etc. and sticking to them irrespective of what a

famous person says or does. I do however, try and keep an open mind.

Page 20: Document2

6. How will communications change in the next 50 years?

Changes will be dramatic. No landlines, only satellites. Communication will be extremely fast, convenient,

effective, and in audio and 3D visual formats. There might be other dimensions which we cannot even

imagine today.

Describe a kind of music. You should say:

Whether you like music or not.

What kind of music you like most.

What role music plays in people’s lives.

1.

b) I am sure you are familiar with that kind of music

2.

a) I like music very much.

b) That is to say, I cannot imagine what my life would be like without music.

3.

a) I believe music plays an important part in people’s lives.

b) For example, we can use it to sooth our minds after a hard day at work, or it can provide us with the

rhythm to dance to.

There are several reasons as for why I would like to talk specifically about pop music. Allow me to explain

by mentioning some of them briefly.

4.

a) First of all, pop music is lively, and suits me at my age.

b) What I mean to say is that us youngsters like to listen to music that fits in with the way we feel

5.

a) Secondly, usually has a good rhythm.

b) For instance, it is suitable for us to dance to in the nightclubs.

Page 21: Document2

6.

a) Lastly, pop music is simple to understand.

b) That is to say, I like it because it does not have complicated lyrics, and it helps me to relax after I have

been studying hard for some time.

7. So, those were some thoughts on my favorite type of music.

 PART 3

1. How long do you listen to music everyday?

1a. Oh let me think a while. I guess I listen to music for about half an hour every day.

1b. I would, for example, listen when I get home from school, or in the evenings before I go to bed.

2a. On weekends, however, I listen to music much more.

2b. For example, I would invite my best friend over to my place, and we would listen to our favorite CD’s

for a few hours at a time.

3a. In the holidays I listen to music even more.

3b. For instance, my friends and I would go to a music shop in one of the large shopping malls and listen

to the new releases.

2. Why is it easier for children to play a musical instrument?

Neurologically fresher than adults. More dexterity than adults.

3. Discuss the influence of music on the youth of China.

Not as negative as is often the case in the West. Chinese youngsters often loose out because they do not

know the classics.

4. What influence does western music have in China?

Influence is still small. Will become greater with more open policies.

Describe a traditional festival in China. You should say:

Page 22: Document2

What it is.

When it is celebrated.

How it is celebrated.

What you usually do on that day.

What you like and what you dislike about it.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to you. I am sure you will find my talk interesting and informative.

1.

a) If I had to describe a traditional festival, I would choose to speak about the Chinese New Year Festival.

b) I think you have heard of it as the Spring Festival.

2.

a) This festival is on the first day of the Chinese New Year.

b) That is to say, that it is the start of a vacation for lots of people.

3.

a) The vacation will often last for 10 or 15 days.

b) This is because the Lantern Festival is on the 15th day of the first lunar month, and will then be the end

of the vacation.

There are several reasons as for why I like the Spring Festival. Allow me to explain by mentioning some

of them briefly.

4.

a) First of all, family members that have not seen each other for some time will get together at this time.

b) What I mean to say is that people will go to a lot of trouble and expense to be with their families at this

time.

5.

a) Secondly, it is a very joyous time of the year, with best wishes being sent all around.

b) For instance, there are firework displays, dinner parties, and dumplings at midnight, and the elder

generations give money to the youngsters.

6. So, those were some thoughts on why I like the Chinese New Year Festival.

Page 23: Document2

PART 3

 PART 3

1. What is the concept of a holiday in China?

That’s an interesting / good / broad / tough question. As to what the average person in China understands

by a holiday, I would like to shortly mention the following points:

1a. Firstly, I believe that it depends on the person’s personal circumstances.

1b. What I mean to say is that a factory worker would consider a day off from work to spend at home as a

holiday. However, the media tycoon would not regard it as a holiday. To him two weeks skiing in the

Austrian Alps would be more like a holiday.

2a. In addition, I am convinced that it depends on the relationships a person is involved in.

2b. For example, a family man and a bachelor will certainly not have the same ideas on what a holiday

should be like.

3a. Lastly, I am of the opinion that the concept of a holiday differs between different cultures.

3b. What I mean to say is that because of differences in customs, religions, and climate, people spend

their holidays in completely different ways.

2. Why are holidays so important to modern people?

I believe that holidays are important to modern people for several reasons. Allow me to explain my views

by shortly mentioning two of them.

1a. Firstly, I believe that modern people have a much more stressful life than the previous generation.

1b. For instance, because of the tough competition for the available jobs, we are under much more

pressure to perform and excel in our careers. Therefore we need a time of rest once in a while.

2a. Secondly, I think that many of us have been forced to become city dwellers, and in the process, we

have completely lost contact with nature and the outdoors.

2b. What I mean is that they need a holiday to get out of the city once in a while. Proof of this is the fact

that more and more people are choosing outdoor activities like hiking, mountaineering, and cycling to

spend their free time.

3. Do you think it is important to observe the traditional festivals and customs?

Yes. Important part of our culture and heritage. Reminds children of their roots. Brings families and

communities together. Leads to stronger nationalism.

Page 24: Document2

4. What changes have taken place in terms of spending festivals and holidays in the past decade?

Not much. Still most of the practices. Maybe bit more modern like eating in restaurant instead of at home.

5. What are the differences as regards the celebration of festivals in the different parts of China?

Not much. The principles behind the celebrations are the same. Maybe influenced by the local weather to

some extent.

Describe a perfect trip or holiday. You should say:

Where you would go.

When you would go.

Whom you would go with.

What you are going to do.

Why you think it was perfect.

1.

a) If I had to describe a perfect trip, I would like to tell you that I would love to undertake a trip to the zoo.

b) I am not sure if you have been there before.

2.

a) I would like to go there in the summer.

b) That is to say, I want to go there when the weather is fine, and all the animals are active.

3.

a) I would take some of my friends with, and also my Biology teacher.

b) What I mean to say is that I would like some nice company, but would also want somebody who would

be able to explain many of the things that we are going to see there to me.

There are several reasons as for why I would like to go to the zoo. Allow me to explain by mentioning

some of them briefly.

4.

a) First of all, I love nature and the outdoors.

b) What I mean to say is that we would be out in nature the whole day.

Page 25: Document2

5.

a) Secondly, I would be able to see many interesting animals.

b) For instance, I have heard that there are tigers, bears, wolfs, and many other animals.

6.

a) Lastly, it would be a perfect trip for me because of the scenes that I would be able to see.

b) I have heard, for instance, that there is a beautiful lake, and that one can actually climb the Qi Pan

Mountain.

7. So, those were some thoughts on what I believe would be a perfect trip.

PART 3

 PART 3

1. Do you like to travel alone or with your friends?

Well, that depends on where I am traveling to, and for what reason. Please allow me to explain by

mentioning the following points:

1a. Firstly, if I were going on a pleasure I would take some friends along.

1b. For instance, we would visit the zoo or the botanical gardens, or visit some other friends in a

neighboring city.

2a. If, however, I were to go on a study trip, I prefer to go alone.

2b. For example, last year, I undertook a trip and visited some historical sites in the Shandong province.

Then I spend most of my traveling time reading about the sites beforehand, and when getting there,

making enquiries from the local guides and inhabitants.

3a. Lastly, when I travel to go and visit relatives, I like to go with my family.

3b. To be more specific, when I visit my grandparents in the countryside, I take my parents along. They

are not too familiar with the new roads, and in any case, they cannot drive. So I have the responsibility to

see that we get there and back safely.

2. Where have you traveled to before?

Local places of interest like Qi Pan mountains. Other cities nearby or far away / other provinces in China /

other country near or far away.

Page 26: Document2

3. What are the benefits of traveling?

Educational. Exposure to information, cultures, experiences, makes one more world wise and increases

your general knowledge.

4. Why do so many people like traveling these days?

Curious about other countries / cultures / people. Want to share in new experiences. Business people

have more contacts / customers abroad. People have more family abroad, more students are studying

abroad.

5. What are the differences in the past and the present as regards traveling?

Faster, more convenient, more comfortable, longer distances, greater variety of travel modes, relatively

less expensive.

6. How do you think the tourist industry will develop in China in future?

Very well. China has much to offer at reasonably affordable prices. Natural beauty, exciting cities, variety

of climates, friendly people, well developed infra-structure.

7. What should the government do to attract more tourists to China?

Advertising campaigns in the target countries. Open banking facilities more. Improve facilities at the main

attractions. Train guides in more foreign languages.

8. What can ordinary people do to attract more tourists to China?

Study the history and facts about China more. Be friendly and helpful to each and every tourist. Do

volunteering work at attractions.

Describe an interesting hobby. You should say:

What it is.

When you began to do it.

How long you spend on it.

How often you do it.

Why you like it.

1.

a) If I had to describe an interesting hobby, I would choose to speak about my stamp collection.

b) I am sure you have met someone who is interested in stamps.

Page 27: Document2

2.

a) I have been collecting stamps for the past two years now.

b) That is to say, for two years I have chosen stamp collecting to be my only hobby.

3.

a) I regularly spend time working on my collection.

b) I guess I spend about two hours every week on my hobby. This is mainly over weekends, as I do not

have time during the week.

There are several reasons as for why I would like to talk specifically about collecting stamps. Allow me to

explain by mentioning some of them briefly.

4.

a) First of all, when you collect stamps, you are able to learn more about the world, and you will not be

bored easily.

b) What I mean to say is that you can get stamps from every country in the world.

5.

a) Secondly, you are able to meet new friends through your hobby.

b) For instance, you have a common interest with someone else, and you can discuss your collections for

many hours.

6.

a) Lastly, the hobby will teach you some self-discipline and how to be very systematic.

b) That is to say, you have to tend to your collection regularly, and you have to sort the stamps according

to internationally recognized systems.

7. So, those were some thoughts on my favorite hobby.

PART 3

PART 3

Page 28: Document2

1. Do you like hobbies requiring teamwork?

No. I personally do not fancy hobbies that require teamwork. Please allow me to shortly mention the

following reasons:

1a. Firstly, in my job I have to deal with customers the whole day from early morning to late afternoon.

After work, I really just want to be alone for a while.

1b. Therefore, I would rather tend to my stamp collection on my own than play in a basketball team.

2a. In addition, I think that teamwork should be practiced in sports like basketball or football.

2b. What I mean is that your hobby should be something where you do not have to co-operate with others

to achieve success.

3a. In addition, I think that your hobby should be an opportunity for you to practice your own creativity.

3b. To be more specific, in a basketball game one cannot be selfish, as you have to consider what is best

for the team as a whole. On the other hand, when you want to be creative, you need to be able to

implement your own ideas without having to consider others.

2. What do Chinese people usually do in their spare time?

Watch TV. Partake in karaoke. Eat out at favorite restaurant. Visit friends and family. Outdoors: walking,

sport, cycling. Travel to unknown destinations.

3. Which of the following hobbies do you think are interesting:

Surfing the Internet: Many interesting sites.

Watching TV: News, documentaries, soap operas.

Listening to music: Favorite artists. New releases. “Golden Oldies”.

Keeping a pet: Learning it new tricks. Observing its habits.

4. What do you think of expensive hobbies?

Not good. Hobby should not be a liability but a pleasure.

Describe an environmental problem. You should say:

What it is.

How long it has existed.

What effect it has had on people’s lives.

What we can do to solve it.

Page 29: Document2

1.

a) If I had to describe an environmental problem I would choose to speak about the air pollution in the

cities of China.

b) I am sure you have experienced the problem yourself.

2.

a) To start, I would mention that the problem has existed since we have so many vehicles moving around

in our cities.

b) That is to say, in the past, when animals were used to transport goods and people, we did not have

this problem to the same extent as today.

3.

a) The increase in the number of industries has also greatly contributed to the problem.

b) For example, in the past people were mainly farmers, and did not cause much pollution.

There are several solutions that I would like to talk about. Allow me to explain by mentioning some of

them briefly.

4.

a) First of all, we have to reduce the number of vehicles in the streets of our cities.

b) What I mean to say is that we should force people to make use of public transport more often.

5.

a) Secondly, we have to reduce the pollution that factories are causing.

b) For instance, there should be large fines on companies that let poisonous gasses into the air.

6.

a) Lastly, we will have to reduce the number of buildings that burn fossil fuels like coal for their central

heating.

b) That is to say, local governments should have incentives for the owners of buildings to switch to

electricity or gas for the heating of their buildings.

7. So, those were some thoughts on how I believe we can solve the problem of air pollution.

Page 30: Document2

PART 3

PART 3

1. What causes environmental problems?

That’s a broad question. There are many causes of course. Allow me to explain some of them by shortly

mentioning a few.

1a. Firstly, one of the major causes of pollution are the exhaust fumes from motor vehicles.

1b. For instance, in cities where many vehicles move around in a relatively small area the whole day, we

can actually see the air pollution.

2a. Secondly, industries often cause air- and water pollution.

2b. What I mean to say is that factories often emit poisonous gasses into the air, or spill poisonous liquids

into rivers or streams.

3a. Thirdly, machines cause noise pollution.

3b. To be more specific, motor vehicles, aircraft, and trains make a lot of noise. This is often so severe

that it can affect the health of people.

4a. Lastly, soil pollution can make the land unsuitable for agriculture.

4b. For example, the radioactive pollution after the accident at Chernobyl in Russia made vast tracts of

good agricultural land useless forever.

2. What should the government do to protect the environment in China?

Highest priority. Loss of environment would cause national catastrophe. Spend much more money on

research, repairs, and education. Educate people, especially children (TV, newspapers, school subjects).

Create more green belts in our cities. Constitute new and stricter laws and penalties. Partake in

international efforts more.

3. What other measures can you think of to protect the environment in China?

Declare more National Parks and Wilderness areas. Create more Botanical Gardens. Change agricultural

practices to make farms more environmental friendly. Stricter control on the use of insecticides and

pesticides.

Page 31: Document2

4. How should we educate children to appreciate the importance of conservation in China?

Take them out into nature to experience it first hand. Make careers in conservation more attractive by

better salaries.

5. What are the differences between the older and younger generations as regards the protection of the

environment in China?

Older people are not as educated on the issues involved

Describe a kind of extreme weather. You should say:

What it is.

When it happened.

Where you were at the time.

How you felt at the time.

1.

a) If I had to describe a kind of extreme weather, I would choose to speak about a snowstorm that I

experienced.

b) I am not sure if you have experienced a snowstorm yet.

2.

a) Last winter we had a severe snowstorm here in Shenyang.

b) That is to say, for two days we had heavy snowfalls accompanied by gale force winds.

3.

a) I was still a scholar at the time, and my life was disrupted too.

b) For example, our school had to be closed for a week after the storm, and we missed many classes.

There are several reasons as for why I would like to talk about that snowstorm. Allow me to explain by

mentioning some of them briefly.

4.

a) First of all, many workers suffered because of the storm.

b) What I mean to say, that people could not go to work, and lost some of their normal income for that

week.

Page 32: Document2

5.

a) Secondly, the economy of the city was hurt.

b) For instance, factories were closed and could not produce as they usually did.

6.

a) Lastly, the storm caused a lot of damage all over the city.

b) That is to say, many buildings were damaged by the wind, and had to be repaired at great cost.

7. So, those were some thoughts on an extreme kind of weather that I experienced.

PART 3

PART 3

1. What should you do in the case of bad weather?

Well, it depends on who you are. Please allow me to explain shortly by mentioning a few points.

1a. Firstly, if you are a healthy and strong person, you do not have to worry about the weather too much.

1b. For instance, such people go out to climb mountains and often have to cope with the worst conditions

imaginable.

2a. Secondly, elderly or ill people should avoid the bad weather at all costs.

2b. What I mean to say is that such people could easily get pneumonia for example, which could actually

kill them.

3a. Lastly, it depends of course what is meant by bad weather.

3b. What I mean to say is that even mountaineers, stay in their camp during a blizzard. However, to an

elderly lady suffering from a common cold, a walk out in the snow could be detrimental to her health.

2. Do you think that bad weather has an effect on how people feel?

Yes. Gloomy weather leads to depression. Spring and summer leads to happiness and a positive

inclination. Snow causes disruptions, losses, and suffering. Extreme cold or heat leads to irritation.

Page 33: Document2

3. To what extent does the climate of a region affect the culture of that region?

Because of the severe winters: Clothing had to be adapted. Food has become more rich in oils and fats.

Leisure activities had to be more indoors. Many new terminologies in the language. Arts and music.

4. What changes in the climate have you observed in your lifetime?

Winters are not so severe as in the past. Summers are hotter. Less rain and snow. More sandstorms.

5. What climatic changes do you predict in the following years?

Less rain, higher temperatures, more floods.

Talk about learning English. You should say:

When and where you began studying English.

What the most interesting thing in an English class is.

What the most effective way of learning English is.

What difficulties you have when learning English.

What the advantages of learning English are.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to you. I am sure you will find my talk interesting and informative.

1.

a) I have studied English on a full-time basis for a period of about six months.

b) I am sure as a native English speaker you will not be able to understand my experiences.

2.

a) I studied English at a private English school called Jiahua in the city of Shenyang.

b) That is to say, it is a relatively small school with a limited number of students.

3.

a) There are many difficulties when studying English.

b) For example, you have to build a new vocabulary, and the pronunciation of many of these words is

completely foreign to you.

There are several advantages to studying English. Allow me to explain by mentioning some of them

briefly.

4.

a) First of all, you are developing yourself as a person. There is a saying that “knowledge is power”.

Page 34: Document2

b) What I mean to say is that if you are able to speak a second language you have the power to do more

things.

5.

a) Secondly, it is a requirement at most universities abroad that you have to have a working knowledge of

English.

b) For instance, I am studying ‘English For Academic Purposes’, also known as EAP, which will enable

me to attend classes held in English at a university.

6.

a) Lastly, English is the most widely used language worldwide.

b) That is to say, if you know English you have access too much more information through books and the

Internet than a person who does not know English.

7. So, those were some of my thoughts on studying English.

PART 3

PART 3

1. What problems do you have when studying English?

There are many, but I would like to shortly mention the following:

1a. Firstly, I believe that acquiring sufficient vocabulary of which the meanings are understood is a

problem.

1b. For instance, one cannot compile good sentences if you do not know the correct meaning of a large

number of words.

2a. In addition, I think that the correct pronunciation of many of the English words is a problem to many

people.

2b. What I want to say is that words may be spelled differently but are pronounced in the same way, like

‘Wales’ and ‘whales’, for example.

3a. Lastly, I am of the opinion that synonyms, i.e. different words that have the same meaning can be a

Page 35: Document2

problem.

3b. What I mean to say is that it is difficult to know in what context ‘snake’ is used as apposed to

‘serpent’.

2. Do you think that English is the most important language in the world?

Most widely spoken languages: Chinese Mandarin 885 million, Chinese Yue (Cantonese) 66 million,

Spanish 332 million, English: 322 million. English is global business language. Common medium between

foreigners.

3. Do you think that English can replace Chinese as the language of China?

No. Tradition of Chinese language too long. Language is important part of the Chinese culture.

Resistance to change from people will be great.

4. What other languages are taught in China?

Some people study Japanese, French or Russian.

5. Do you think that a person’s age is a factor when learning English? Why?

Yes. Neurological, cultural, and social factors.

6. What difficulties would a foreigner have when studying English?

Pronunciation, grammar, and spelling.

7. At what age should children start studying English?

Not too early. First master mother-tongue language completely.

Describe a way of getting the news. You should say:

Whether you get news every day.

Whether the news is national or international.

How you get news, (via newspaper, TV, Internet, radio or other people).

How most Chinese people think about the importance of getting up to date news everyday.

1.

a) If I had to describe the way of getting news I would choose to speak about TV news.

b) I am sure you watch the TV news as much as possible.

Page 36: Document2

2.

a) I get the latest news on the TV on a daily basis.

b) That is to say, I usually watch the 20h00 broadcast just before I start with my evening studies.

3.

a) The news on TV covers national as well as international news.

b) For example, national stories are received from the stations local correspondents, and international

items are bought from networks like CNN and ITN abroad.

There are several reasons as for why I would like to talk specifically about TV as a way of getting the

news. Allow me to explain by mentioning some of them briefly.

4.

a) First of all, TV news is always up to date.

b) What I mean to say, is that the time it takes to produce a TV newscast is much shorter that producing a

newspaper.

5.

a) Secondly, although news broadcasts on the radio are fast too, the news on TV is highlighted by vivid

pictures of what is happening.

b) For instance, we can actually see what is happening at an important event like the Olympic Games.

6.

a) Lastly, the news on TV is concise.

b) That is to say, that it deals only with the main aspects of a story. This suits me fine, as I do not have

the time to read all the details as given in a newspaper.

7. So, those were some thoughts on how I get to know about the latest news.

PART 3

PART 3

Page 37: Document2

1. Do you think the information on the Internet is believable or not?

That’s an interesting / good / broad / tough question. It depends on what information you are referring to. I

would like to shortly mention the following possibilities where I think the information is believable:

1a. Firstly, I often read the weather forecast on the Internet.

1b. What I mean is that I know for sure that people who have a vast amount of technology to their

disposal, and are extremely experienced in what they are doing, are compiling the forecast.

2a. Secondly, I often use the dictionaries that are available on the Internet.

2b. For example, the Oxford dictionary is well known throughout the world, and I believe one can safely

use information gained from there.

3a. Lastly, I think that news items on the net are believable.

3b. To be more specific, news organizations take great care in checking information before it is published.

This is done for two reasons. They would not want to get involved in a liability court case, and they would

like to protect their reputation as a reliable source of information.

2. What is the most effective way of getting the news?

Newspapers, magazines, radio, television, Internet

3. What do you think of the importance of privacy?

It depends on who you are. Celebrities cannot expect privacy. I want to be private some times. Like with

my girlfriend / boyfriend / family. The government and banks should keep my personal information private.

4. What do you think of the ways in which journalists get their stories?

Some of them are ruthless and inconsiderate in their attempts to get a scoop (as to now dramatic

unpublished story).

5. What role does the media play in the lives of the public? Do you think this is a healthy situation?

There must be a balance. The media should be controlled to some extent. Public has the right to know,

but some matters, like those on national security are too sensitive to publish.

6. How do Chinese people usually gather information?

Radio, television, newspapers, magazines. Many do not have Internet facilities yet.

7. Do you think the media should be absolutely free?

No. There should be a balance.

Page 38: Document2

Describe one of your friends. You should say:

Who he/she is?

How long you have known each other?

How you got to know each other?

What you usually did together?

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to you. I am sure you will find my talk interesting and informative.

1.

a) I have many good friends, but my best friend is called XXX.

b) I am sure you have a best friend too.

2.

a) I met XXX about XXX years ago at the school that we attended together, and we soon became best

friends.

b) Our friendship has lasted to this day.

3.

a) Our friendship has grown a great deal over the past three years.

b) These days, for example we share all our secrets with each other.

There are several reasons as for why I would like to talk specifically about XXX as my best friend. Allow

me to explain by mentioning some of them briefly.

4.

a) I guess the main reason why XXX and I became best friends, is that we have the same interests.

b) For example, we both love listening to music, and we spend many hours together listening to our

favorite CD`s.

5.

a) Another reason why we have become best friends is that we both would like to go and study abroad in

the near future.

b) So we often chat about what possible majors we would study, and what university we would like to

attend.

Page 39: Document2

6.

a) A third reason why s/he is my best friend is that we share many principles.

b) For example, we both believe that we should not damage our health by smoking cigarettes.

7.

a) Lastly, I believe that XXX has had a positive influence on my life since we have met.

b) XXX is always friendly, cares about his/her family and friends, and is always willing to listen to others.

So now you know why XXX is my best friend.

PART 3

PART 3

1. Do you have many friends? Are they casual acquaintances or close friends?

I am pleased to say that I have many friends. Allow me to explain my relationship with them by shortly

mentioning the following points:

1a. Firstly, I believe that one has to have some close friends.

1b. For instance, I have a friend who I spend a lot of time with, share all my secrets with, and consult

PART 3

PART 3

1. What is the most important subject for kids? Why?

That’s an interesting / good / broad / tough question.

I believe that history is the most important subject that children should be taught in our schools. Allow me

to explain by shortly mentioning the following points:

1a) Firstly, children should know where they come from and where their roots are.

and what you want to do with your life.

2a) In addition, I think that children are able to learn many lessons from history.

been made in the past, they can try and avoid making the same mistakes when they are grown up.

3a) Lastly, I think that children need strong role models.

3b) What I mean to say is that in history there are many people who’s example one could follow with

positive results.

Good: Patience, kindness, fairness, balanced. Knowledge of the subject. Experience.

Bad: Opposite of the above.

shortly mentioning the following points:

1a. Firstly, I believe that the amount of studying involved to be able to do a job will affect people’s

decision in choosing that or another job.

1b. For instance, to become a medical doctor, one has to study for seven years. This is a long time, and

costs a lot of money.

2a. In addition, I think that the working conditions that one will experience will affect people’s decision.

2b. For example, a job in an office is more suitable to the ladies than one out in the open.

3a. In addition, I am of the opinion that the pay that one will receive for doing a particular job is important

to people.

Page 67: Document2

3b. What I mean to say is that one has to earn sufficient money to maintain a certain standard of living.

4a. Lastly but not the least, I think that one has to enjoy what your are doing in your job.

4b. To be more specific, it does not make sense to do a job where you earn a large salary, but you hate

what you are doing.

2. What do you think of the differences between employers and employees?

Employers have power, can order employees. Employers have more responsibilities. Employees only

have to work. Employers earn more than employees. Employers take more risks than employees.

Describe the most important invention before the computer.

You should say:

What it is.

What it is used for.

What the advantages and disadvantages of it are.

TOPIC 34.1

THE MOST IMPORTANT INVENTION

THE AUTOMOBILE

Page 68: Document2

1. Since its invention, the automobile has become one of the most important means of transport in the

world. Automobiles have completely changed the lifestyles of almost all people in the world.

2. On the positive side, people can go anywhere by car more rapidly compared to on foot or riding a

horse in the past. And thus people can realize their dreams of traveling to far off places.

3. On the negative side, automobiles are the main source of air pollution in the world. This creates the so-

called “green-house” effect, which leads to many serious environmental problems.

As for the applications of the automobile are concerned, I would like to highlight the following:

4. Firstly, it has totally changed the way in which we travel. In the past, animals like horses, mules, and

camels were used for traveling and the transportation of goods. Compared to previous ways of traveling,

automobiles are more comfortable and faster.

5. In addition, the automobiles have made it possible for us to transport large quantities of goods and

people at one time. For example, mega-trucks and busses are well suited for these purposes.

6. Lastly, the invention of the automobile has resulted in many new industries being formed. The repairs

and spare-parts industries for example, provide jobs to millions of people all over the world.

TOPIC 34.2

THE MOST IMPORTANT INVENTION

THE TELEPHONE

First of all let me say, I am sure you will find my talk interesting and informative.

1. Since its invention, the telephone has become one of the most important telecommunication

instruments in the world. Except for a few undeveloped countries in the world, all modern people use

telephones on a daily basis.

2. On the positive side, it enables us to communicate immediately. For example, we

can speak to a friend in a foreign country whenever we would like to.

3. On the negative side, it can be extremely disturbing at times. Anyone who has received repeated calls

while sleeping would appreciate what I am trying to say.

As for the applications of the telephone are concerned, I would like to explain by mentioning the following:

Page 69: Document2

4. Firstly, the telephone is a great time-saver. Letters and documents can be faxed to a friend, another

office, or a university anywhere in the world.

5. In addition, the telephone is a convenient tool in conducting our daily business. In some cases,

business people can place orders, make enquiries, or arrange a meeting. Also we can make emergency

calls to the hospital, fire station or police when needed.

6. Lastly, many new developments have taken place around the conventional telephone. For example,

mobile phones, videophones, and the Internet are commonly used today.

So, those were some thoughts on the telephone.

34.3

THE MOST IMPORTANT INVENTION:

TELEVISION

1. Since its invention, television (TV as it has become known) has become the most important

telecommunication instrument in the world. There are very few communities in the world that do not have

a TV in every household.

2. On the positive side, it has made a great contribution to mankind since its invention. For example,

documentary programs, such as “Discovery” enrich our lives.

3. On the negative side, it has resulted in people not having time to spend with one another. For example,

parents and children do not spend so much time talking to each other as in the past.

As for the applications of TV are concerned, I would like to explain by mentioning the following:

4. Firstly, TV is used widely in long distance education. For example, the TV University in China is the

largest university in the world. It has millions of students throughout the country, following many diverse

programs.

5. In addition, TV is a great source of entertainment. What I mean to say is that we can watch movies,

soap operas, TV series, and live performances by artists in the comfort of our own homes.

6. Lastly, today TV is one of the largest sources of information. We can watch vivid pictures of the news,

and so get to know what is happening in the world. For example, we can see important events like the

Olympic games, conflicts and wars, and speeches as they happen.

7. So, those were some thoughts on TV as the most important invention.

Page 70: Document2

PART 3

PART 3

1. Sometimes people are afraid of new ideas. Why?

As to why people are afraid of new ideas, I could mention the following possible reasons. Firstly, people

might not have access to new information, and are therefore not able to imagine how to develop a new

idea. Secondly, people are afraid of failing. What I mean to say is that they do not have sufficient self-

confidence to make their ideas become real. For example, they have seen how many others before them

have failed in starting a new business, and they are afraid of making the same mistakes, and possibly

loosing a lot of money in the process. Lastly, people are afraid of the unknown. One has to be

adventurous to attempt something that is new to you.

2. When do people get new ideas?

Firstly, I would like to mention that people get new ideas when their needs change. For example, people

needed to speak to somebody far away immediately, and so Alexander Bell invented the telephone.

Another example would be that people had the need to travel faster and in more comfort, and so Henry

Ford designed the first automobile. Secondly, we are constantly looking for more effective and convenient

ways to do things. This has led to many inventions like the computer, mobile phones, the Internet, and fax

machines.

3. Do you have any new ideas that could improve our lives?

I am sorry, but I do not have an idea at the moment that could improve our lives. However, I am sure that

when I have completed my studies and have gained some experience in my field, I would be able to

come up with a number of ideas that would change our lives for the better. I have always had an open

mind for new ideas, and will definitely be on the look out for ways in which I can improve the lives of my

people and the rest of the world.

4. If a good friend of yours has a new idea, which he thinks can earn a lot of money, but you do not think

it is a good idea, will you join in?

If he thinks it is a good idea, but I do not agree, I will try and show him why I think he will be making a

mistake. I will however keep an open mind and give him the opportunity to explain his idea in more detail.

Page 71: Document2

We can learn a lesson from the life of Nobel, who invented dynamite. He failed many times, and even lost

an eye in his attempts, but he never gave up.

5. Can you describe the processing of a new idea from the original to the new product?

Not really. I have no experience in this field, but I could make a few guesses if you do not mind. I believe

a new idea is born in somebody’s mind. When the idea has been thought over, it has to be put into

practical terms. Should it seem that the idea is practical, a proto-type can be built. It then has to be tested

in a real life situation. If the tests were positive, the next step would be to produce it on a small scale. It

has to be advertised in the market. If it seems that there is a demand for such a product, money can be

infested to produce it on a large scale.
