Lisa had big plans for her son.

Maybe he would be a doctor or a teacher. Maybe an author or a police officer.

Ethan had always been smart and excelled in school, and Lisa was his biggest supporter. But as he entered his junior year of high school, Ethan’s focus started to shift. His teachers became concerned about his distant behavior and unwillingness to participate in class.

Little did the school know there were much bigger problems on Ethan’s mind. At home, his father’s violence had escalated from cruel and harsh words to physical violence toward Lisa. Ethan saw more and more violence against his mom, and he tried to intervene with no success, sometimes putting his own life on the line. Ethan felt hopeless. Fear, anxiety and helplessness kept him awake every night.

A line was drawn in the sand, and Lisa had reached her breaking point. The violence was out of control. She knew she needed to escape her dangerous home and get help. While at a doctor’s office, Lisa had written down the SafeHaven 24-hour emergency hotline in case she would ever need to use it.

After speaking with a trained advocate on the hotline, she and Ethan hopped in a taxi to a safe

place where they would be greeted and taken to an emergency shelter. Upon arriving, the two settled in and staff shared support group options and individual counseling sessions that would help them through their transition.

During his stay at the shelter, Ethan actively participated in counseling, family night, support groups, and his favorite activity, the male mentor program. The program, which centered around positive male role models, also included Ethan’s personal favorite pastime: basketball.

Ethan and the shelter ’s male mentor, Mr. Mike, spent hours developing a relationship on the shelter ’s basketball court. The setting served as an invaluable forum for Ethan to open up about the trauma he endured before his time at SafeHaven, and Mr. Mike was able to impart guidance and most importantly encourage affirmation.

As Lisa and Ethan’s exit from shelter drew near, Mr. Mike and Ethan were able to discuss and develop a plan pertaining to both Ethan’s ac-ademic and professional interests. They also researched colleges and discussed best practices for applications.

Lisa was no longer the only one who believed in her son.

Upon their exit, Lisa and Ethan entered SafeHaven’s long-term housing program, which assisted them in finding and funding an

apartment to start their new life in an environment free of violence and fear.

Months later, shelter staff received a call from Lisa and Ethan asking Mr. Mike to be a reference for college applications.

Ethan was hopeful again. His mom was safe and he looked toward his future.

Dreams are often put on hold when violence takes precedence in a home.

You gave lifesaving opportunities to Lisa and Ethan. Because of you, they were able to regain a life free from domestic violence.
