THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH

Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today’s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibil-ity of sharing that faith with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Our Identity as People of God By Cynthia Reyes

What makes us who we are? Is it our DNA or our family of origin? What influences have penetrated our lives? What makes us unique, like no other? Our identity is an accumulation of many factors. It’s not surprising to find families sharing similar characteristics in likes and dislikes. Some families are unified in educational pursuits, others in service professions: nurses, doctors, and teachers.

So why would a young man discern a life as a priest? Was it because of family influence or was it embed-ded in their DNA? I don’t think DNA contributes to their decision of their call, but I do believe that a prayerful family constitutes and grooms the grounds for discernment into the priesthood. Our pastor, Fr. Doan Pham has served this archdiocese for 20 years. Nevertheless, perhaps not so surprising since he had two uncles who were priests. He had anticipated a career path as an engineer and making a home with a special someone, forming a family in Van Nuys. However, circumstances changed his life forever when he answered God’s call as a priest. Life as he had come to know, was changed forever.

Today’s we celebrate our identity as God’s people. We have come to know God as revealed to us as Fa-ther, the perfection of his creation in Jesus the Son, and the fullness of the loved God poured out on us in the Holy Spirit. We have come to know our identity as children of God. We have claimed our identity and all the ramifications this brings as believers. As Fr. Doan celebrates his priestly anniversary of 20yrs., we also take the gospel message to heart, proclaiming with our lives what we truly believe, as God walks beside us. He makes the impossible, possible. Happy Anniversary Fr. Doan, and we are glad you said yes to God!

LEARN. SERVE. LEAD. SUCCEED.

“In the Catholic school, family values are support-ed. Parents know their children are being not only informed, but also formed.

Do you purchase gift cards for gifts? The school sells gift cards as an on-going fundraiser. There is everything: restau-rants, movie theaters, coffee places, hard-ware and department stores, and plenty more. Support your Parish school by making them your 1-stop shopping for all your gift-giving throughout the year. A percentage of each purchase supports the school in our fundraising efforts. As al-ways, we thank you for your continued support.

DID YOU KNOW? Talk to your teens about handling workplace violence Many teens will get their first job while still in high school. Building a work ethic is a great and necessary skill, but teens need to be informed to about how best to handle pos-sible workplace violence. Coworkers are not always thoroughly screened, and your teen could face another employee’s rage or anger that could possible put them in danger. Talk to your teens abut warning signs—short tempers, intimidation, drug use—and about how to remove themselves when they feel unsafe in a situation, and how to report any concerns they have, to a safe adult. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article “What Can You Do to Help Prevent Workplace violence?” visit http:www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protectiong/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx. ¿SABIA USTED?
