25TH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIMESeptember 21, 2014 | 8:45 & 11:00 am Worship

WELCOMEWelcome to all who are worshipping with us. Child care for children through Kindergarten is available during this service in building D. Consult an usher if you need an assistive hearing device or a large-print bulletin. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence your cell phones. Following worship, you are invited for a time of conversation and refreshments in the Five Points Courtyard.

The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship.

OPENING VOLUNTARY Concerto in G Johann Sebastian Bach

*CALL TO WORSHIP

One: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

All We are gathered in the name of Jesus Christ, gathered in the presence of an awesome, Holy Love. We are here to worship.

One: Worship the Lord with gladness, come into God’s presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God, the One who made us, the One to whom we belong.

All: O come, let us return to the living God; let us bow before the One who is our Maker.

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN #455 lasst uns erfreuenAll Creatures of Our God and King

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)Holy God,

We confess to you and in the company of your people that our lives and the life of the world are broken by our sin.

Silent confession

Gracious God, Forgive us. Living Christ, renew us. Ever-present Spirit, enable us to grow in love. Amen.

*Those who are able, please stand.

Whatever personal reasons lead us to

church, another reason, whether we

are aware of it or not, invites our attention.

God has called the church to assembleand offer its service

as a corporate priesthood.

-Book of Common Worship Companion

Why offer a prayer of confession? To

remember all that God has done for us

in Christ is to be confronted with the fact of God’s

astonishing love and our own

unworthiness. Who can deserve Christ’s sacrifice? All we can

do is to respondto God’s merciful

goodness by confessing our sin

together in true repentance.

-Book of Common Worship Companion

Come thru his gates with thanksgiving and praise, give thanks unto him and bless his name. Know ye the Lord is God, for it is he that made us. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

SERMON “On Being Christian: Why Worship?” Pam Driesell

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITHWe believe that worship is at the very heart of the church’s life. All that the church is and does is rooted in its worship. The community of faith, gathered in response to God’s call, is formed in its worship. In worship, through Word and Sacrament, the church is sustained by the presence of Christ. Joined in worship to the One who is the source of our life, we are empowered to serve God in the world.

In an age dominated by the idols of materialism and individualism it is particularly important to embrace forms of worship that are firmly rooted in the faith and foster a strong communal sense of being united with God, with the community of faith in every time and place, and with a broken world in need of God’s healing touch.

This we believe and therefore we worship. —from the Book of Common Worship

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE alt. tune: st. flavian The dearest idol I have known, whate’er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne, and worship only thee.

(tune may be found as hymn #81)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYEROur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

A conviction, both Reformed and

ecumenical, affirms the people’s role

as active participants in the liturgy. Though

the actions of hearing and seeing

are integral to worship, a

congregation is not merely an audience,

but a corporate priesthood.

-Book of Common Worship Companion

GIVING OF OFFERINGSOFFERTORY 8:45 O Come Let Us Sing Sven LekbergO come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his and he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

11:00 Praise God in His Holiness Geoffrey ShawPraise God in his holiness: praise him in the firmament of his pow’r. Praise him in his noble acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him in the sound of the trumpet: praise him upon the lute and harp. Praise him in the cymbals and dances. Praise him upon the strings and pipe. Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals: praise him upon the loud cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord.

CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY Fanfare William Mathias

As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world!

Geoffrey Shaw (1879 – 1943) was an English composer and musician specializing in Anglican Church music. After study at Cambridge, where he was an organ scholar, he became a schoolmaster, then a schools inspector, while producing a stream of compositions, arrangements, and published collections of music. This morning’s offertory is typical of his simple and effective sacred choral writing.

SERMON SERIES

Why Jesus? Why Worship? Why Scripture? Why Church?

September 14 - October 5

Perhaps you have heard the “On Being” public radio show hosted by Krista Tippet. The show’s website describes the program as a conversation that “opens up the animating questions at the center of human life.” Taking our cues from this award-winning broadcast, this fall Trinity will be featuring a sermon series, “On Being Christian.” It is intended to open up conversation around some of the most animating questions at the center of Christian life: exploring togeth-er what it means to be Christian and how we are called to live as people of faith. Your hosts will be David Bartlett and Pam Driesell. Come to worship, and join the conversation! [11]

Building A World Without

Poverty

ALL-CHURCH CLASS

Guest Speaker:NOBEL LAUREATEDR. MUHAMMAD YUNUS

Sunday, September 289:45 am | Williams HallTrinity is honored to welcome Professor Muhammad Yunus, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, on September 28. Dr. Yunus is a world leader in helping find more effective ways to develop healthy economies and flourishing life in struggling areas of the world.

In the last two decades free markets have swept the globe, but traditional capitalism has been unable to solve problems like inequality and poverty. In Muhammad Yunus’ ground-breaking sequel to Banker to the Poor, he outlines the concept of social business—business where the creative vision of the entrepreneur is applied to today’s most serious problems. Creating a World Without Poverty reveals the next phase in a hopeful economic and social revolution that is already under way.

Copies of Professor Yunus’ latest book, Creating a World Without Poverty, will be available on Sunday outside Williams Hall and at the church office during the week. A contribution of $14.50 for the book is suggested.
