<2006: Strategy=StimulationFluid and Solid Mechanics (FSM)

• Concerns: foundation of FSM within IMPACT

• Core field: multiphase flows with internationally renowned research groups (prices, editors journals, CoE, ...)

• Multiphase flows:- e.g. flows with air bubbles/water, fluid/particles, bubbles/particles/fluid

- in industry and nature.

25 september 2009 Review 2003 - 2008, Basics/FSM 3

Transition projects 2003-2004

• Bubbles in microfluidics (PoF/FCRE) • Flow of granular matter in thin layers and open

channels:- flow of dry particulates down inclined chute

- relevance: solve bottlenecks with particulate flows in industrial processes

- Bokhove (NACM) & Van Sint Annaland & Kuipers (FCRE).

> 2 research groups! (p23). E.g.:

Transition project: flow of granular matter in thin layers and open channels, e.g.

• Int. projects Geophys. Fluid Dyn. program 2005 & 2007 U.S.A.• articles international journals; chapter encyclopedia• STW grant submission, with Corus, BASF, Unilever• postdoc/UD (MSM/NACM) Center of Excellence FSM.

Results & spin-off:

Synergy projects 2005-2006

• Always involves more than 2 research groups! (p23).

• E.g. (p23):- Van der Hoef (FCRE) & Bokhove (NACM)- project on slurry (solid particles/water) flows:

25 september 2009 Review 2003 - 2008, Basics/FSM 6

Slurry flows

- laboratory experiments- mathematical modeling &

analysis- CFD nonlinear flow

- delivery of tools

- ... application: chemical bed reactors with 3-fase flows.

Managed projects 2006-2007

• We, as IMPACT team, took part in set-up of Multi-Scale Mechanics (MSM-CoE) program within national Smartmix funding opportunity:

- extensive contacts with 3TU & industry ...

- but, Smartmix program abolished: Smartnix (nix=nothing)

- yet direct spin-off: current STW program on MSM.

25 september 2009 Review 2003 - 2008, Basics/FSM 8

Managed projects ...

• Necessary “glue”:

- organized workshops as part of UT-IMPACT spearhead program “dispersed multiphase flows”

- Study Group Mathematics with Industry 2008

- grand IMPACT colloquia, e.g.:

Strategic Innovation Programs (SIPs)

• larger thematic & focused projects (... 3 pdocs, ... 6 groups)

• still curiosity driven, risky, fundamental and academic

• but contacted relevant industries in advance

• “user committee” to fast track transition fundamental to industrially relevant fundamental research & external funding.

25 september 2009 Review 2003 - 2008, Basics/FSM 10

... SIP1 ...• Computational multi-scale modelling of super-dispersed

multiphase flows- ‘super-dispersed’: no longer possible to simulate particle

trajectories individually; too many- criterion: amplify our strengths ...

• Heterogeneous Multi-scale Modelling:

25 september 2009 Review 2003 - 2008, Basics/FSM 11

• Rare view into iron-ore melting furnace with inflow pellets during inspection cycle

• Rotating, inclined chute as filling channel or iron-ore pellets, sinter and coke

25 september 2009 Review 2003 - 2008, Basics/FSM 12

Outlook 2009-2010: SIP2

• Fundamentals of multiphase flowsthrough deformable solids

- geotechnical applications: fraccing, enhanced

oil recovery, & C02-sequestration

- people of 6 groups, 3 intertwined projects

- in discussion with industrial partner (+).

25 september 2009 Review 2003 - 2008, Basics/FSM 13

• ... SIP2 ... 3-4 intertwined projects: - experiment on shape & flow fluid-cracked gelatine - molecular dynamics: determine stress around crack front - same for transparent realistic gelatine-glass particle “rock” - ... alterations & variations via input industrial partner

• Oil, food & health industry (intrusion in soft matter), ....

Intrusion green fluid (“oil”) into gelatin (“rock”), previous crack=red.

Conclusion• “IMPACT stands for reallynew cutting-edge research,of international standing;through excellent contactsits research is directlyaccessible to industry ...and society ...

• ... IMPACT stands for synergetic research ...

• ... IMPACT works.”
