Cell Wars
Text pages 54-56
The Big ideas• Some diseases are caused when cells are invaded by
microscopic living things• You health depends on how well your cell systems work
together
Vocabulary Words• Disease• Infection• Viruses• Pus• Antibodies• Markers
The invaders
• Disease: any condition that is harmful or interferes with normal body functions
• Infection: a cell that has been invaded• Types of invaders:– Bacteria (tetanus, strep throat, pneumonia, food
spoilage)– Fungi (athletes foot)– Protists (malaria, beaver fever)– Viruses: not true cells (colds, HIV, influenza)
The defenders
1. White blood cells, WBC (attack invader directly)– Engulf the invader and any dead body cells– Lysosomes in WBC destroy invader and dead body
cells– WBC and invader die in the process– PUS is a result (dead WBC, body cells, invaders,
protein)
2. Antibodies
• Antibodies are made by special WBC• Made specifically to match “markers (shapes
called antigens)” on the invader• Antibodies will fit the shape/antigen and lock
onto the invader and disable it• You have 1000’s of different antibodies specific
for every invader that your mom had (via breast milk) and that you have had.
