On 01.01.’01 Boris Zeisser and Maartje Lammers founded 24H>architecture inRotterdam, the Netherlands.

Maartje Lammers was born in 1963 and graduated from Technical University of Delftin 1988. Boris Zeisser was born 1968 and graduated from Technical University of Delftwith honourable mention in 1995.

Before starting their own of fice Boris Zeisser and Maartje Lammers worked in severalwell- known architectural of fices like (EEA) Erick van Egeraat associated architects,Mecanoo and the Of fice for Metropolitan Architecture (Rem Koolhaas).

Since its inception 24H>architecture has been involved in various sized projects.Recently a number of projects have been realized, among which are the IchthusAcademy in Rotterdam, a kids den and ecological school in Thailand, the interior for two Youth Hostels in London, the Dragspelhuset at Övre Gla, Sweden, several exhibitions, the of fice of Rijkswaterstaat in Assen and various housing projects in Nieuw Vennep,Hoogvliet and Hoofddorp along with the refurbishments of a former spinning mill intoof fices in Enschede.

The 12 people strong international team of 24H currently work on a broad scope ofdesign tasks: several housing projects in Cadzand, Domburg and Rotterdam, severalschools, an environmental education centre, a saltstorage building and eco resorts inthe Caribbean and Morocco.

24H goal is to find the hidden layers of each commission. Next to program and site, these undiscovered layersmake the answer to each design. By working with various themes guiding the design process, a broad spectrum ofnon- architectural solutions is found.

evolution adaptable structures in time providing multi program use in a single space

natrufied abstract interpretations of nature petrified into building materials

organism growing additions transform existing buildings into new compositions

art d’eco supporting environment as well as beauty makes the art of ecology

sensibilityto arouse the senses, a building should age beautifully by using materialswith a natural ability to transform during its lifetime

This extension to an original cabin from the 1800’s islocated on the shore of the lake Övre Gla in the naturreserve Glaskogen in Sweden. According to Swedishbuilding regulations an extension is not allowed toexceed a maximum floor area. A second priority forthe building regulations is its proximity to the borderof the estate. The building should stay 4 meters clearof the site boundary. In this case the extraordinary

location is along a stream, which forms part of the siteboundary.

To optimize the possibilities given by the buildingregulations, 24H made an extension to the cabin thatcan evolve. The building can literally adjust itself toits environment depending on weather conditions, season or the number of occupants. The extensionunfurls like a butterfly. During the winter it is a cocoon, compact with a double skin against the cold. Duringthe summer the building can change its form or, likea butterfly, unfold its wings for extra shelter duringrainy days.

When the space is maximised, the senses are arousedto the extreme: living above the water of the stream.

The organic shape of the house blends naturally intothe setting of the rough forest. Traditional roofingmaterials (stickor) that were common in Sweden manyyears ago, were used in a contemporary way. Thechoice of cedar wood for the stickor originates fromCanada, as it requires no maintenance. In due timethe wood will have a grey appearance, placing itselfsmoothly in the rough rocky forest landscape.

The amorphous structure with the hornlike chimneyand the undulating lines of cedar shingle skin lendsthe building a reptilian appearance.Closely following the biomorphic curves of the ribcage, the interior walls are finished with pine lattice. The walls of the retractable extension are covered inreindeer hides, turning the living area into a sensuousfur- lined cave. Inspired by the Sámi culture of thenorthern Scandinavia, this treatment acts as excellentinsulation. There are few hours of darkness duringthe Swedish summer, but light fixtures were carefullychosen to blend with the natural surroundings.

Footsteps in the living area cause Ingo Maurer’s Birdychandelier to tremble overhead. Above the kitchenand dining area, custom red polycarbonate ceilingfixtures were inspired by the aurora borealis.

Within  the urban plan of MVRDV for Nieuw Leyden,24H > architecture design two ecological houses. Thebuilding block consists of 18 houses, designed bydifferent architects. There are no regulations of thebeauty commission, so the future owners are free todesign their house, as long as itfits within the providedbuilding envelope. The half sunken parking garage is situated in thecentre of the building block, giving the houses a split-level arrangement, resulting in a high density areawith narrow car free streets. Due the minimal amountof urban requirements regarding floor heights, shapeand architectural appearance of the individual houses, the ensemble got a maximum architectural varietyin shape and style, reminiscent of the historical citycentre of Leiden but in a contemporary appearance.

Since the houses in the building block are organizedfollowing a ‘back- to- back’ principle, the generallayout of the design is arranged in such a way thatthe use of daylight is maximum utilized. To realize this

ambition, a so- called ‘canyon’ is introduced providingits inhabitants with maximal daylight during theday. The canyon flows vertically through the houseand encloses the stairs. It’s orientated in a way thatdaylight can penetrate all the way down to the lowerfloors.

The walls of the canyon are used to arrange the houseinto the necessary functional spaces. Where desired, the canyon becomes transparent and filters thedaylight. Where needed, the walls are closed and allowtoilets and bathrooms to be placed behind its walls.

Energy use is minimized in several ways. In additionto the compact building block and maximum useof daylight mentioned before, a solar water heatingsystem is used in combination with district heating. Together with insulated HR++ glass and highlyinsulated walls, this results in an overall energyperformance which is far more ambitious than therequirements stated in the Dutch building regulations.

The facade is an echo of theflow of the canyon inside, resulting in organically shaped Corten steel on top ofa cladding from fsc certified louro gamela and jatobawood.

This 1875 building in the neighbourhood of historicalKralingen has been renovated by 24H>architecture.Originally built as a boys’ school and later transformedinto a community centre, it is transformed by 24H intotheir own of fice and residence.

From the outside the building looks like a rare, decorated white wedding cake that has been carefullyrenovated. The interior however, - in a deplorable statethrough various transformations over the years- wasstripped and entirely rebuilt. The of fice and residenceare split vertically from each other. The of fice, occupying 2/ 3 of the volume consists of three largespaces. All floors have their own individual quality, the ground floor and first floor have high ceilingswith the historical ornaments whereas the attic hasan informal intimacy underneath the original woodenroof construction.

The house, occupying the other third of the building,is also arranged over different floors with an extra

split- level from earlier interventions. In this area thekitchen, dining and living are located. The sleepingarea for the family is placed on the upper floors.

The interior of the house is built up with variousnatural ingredients. At the lowest level 24H designeda kitchen with a black concrete countertop in twodifferent heights. All kitchen cabinets have handmadezebrawood doors with handles from old French vinestems.

In the living room extra light is brought in by organic

shaped openings in the load bearing wall. At theboundary wall a 24H designed wallpaper with leafpatterns and round family pictures, forming a leafshape, provides another natural touch to the house. The green colour supports the cooking and dining donein these areas. This wallpaper continues through thehouse changing into autumn tones in the bedrooms.

The bathroom brings the theme of water to life; atranslucent curved wall defining the spaces for showerand toilet, contains a collage of swimmers and fish.Various pieces of Zebrawood create the ‘Zebrawoodforest’ holding the panels for the washbasin andshelves. The ‘Heatwave’, an organically shapedheating element, designed by J oris Laarman, providestogether with the floor heating, the heating for thebathroom.

The new stairs run from the bottom to the top and aremade from crude steel with massive wenge treads.Hand railings are made from birch branches and steelwires.

For a historical farm site in the landscape of ZealandFlanders 24H developed a revitalization strategy fora private Belgium client. The strategy consists of therealization of a mainly prefabricated wooden structureand facade for a Villa. The old Tolhuis is refurbishedmainly with re- use of existing materials, insulatedand provided with new insulated window frames. Theprevious Barn is partially refurbished and partiallyrebuilt to accommodate guests. The overall strategy

for energy is the use of a biomass wood fuelling stove. The rainwater is harvested to feed a grey water systemfor part of the sanitary.

The feel of the interior is that of an hand- craftedmodern home. The modern design is matched witha heavy rustic natural stone wall, dark bamboo wallsvarnished or rough and an artistic shaped J atobafloor.

Materials have been chosen from local suppliersproven to have only certified woods and necessaryFSC labels.

On  the border of the city- lake the Kralingse plasin Rotterdam 24H- architecture has designed andrenovated a historic villa.

The design resonates the style of ‘Het nieuwe bouwen’a modern movement in the 1930 in the Netherlands. In addition to this contemporary elements are used. One of the expressive elements on the outside ofthe building is the glazed staircase which makes a

connection between the surrounding forest and thevilla.

Special attention is given to the interior of the villa. The villa is designed around the communal spacesof the living room and kitchen where family liveflourishes.

Close  to Boninifacio in the Domaine of Sperone Patrick vanHeurck en Laetitia van Gindertael are planning to build a villa on thesouth point of Corsica.

The requirements for the house were, inspired by our Sweden house,an organic shape that would embed itself in the slope, making noorthogonal or straight shapes.

The site at the edge of the golf course is looking towards the bay, towards Sardinia over the ‘Bouches de Bonifacio’. Originally built inthe seventies, the first part of Sperone, Chappili is an example of

urban planning regulations that worked really well over time. Thebuildings all made from Red Cedar shingles are all multi formedwooden sculptures in the forest.Apart from the Maquis, Eucalyptus trees grow in more protectedareas in the lower part of the land.

The first sketches and design attempts are made by hand, accompanied by a conceptual model. The house in inspired by theleaves of the Eucalyptus trees, a series of leaves fall over the slopeand embed them in the landscape, trying to meticulously follow thetopographical lines and leaving the Maquis around untouched.

The structure of the build forms is based on the veins of the leafcurved laminated beams of Douglas Fir. The roofs undulating andcovered with a fine texture of Red Cedar shingles.Walls are excavated in the rocky underground, leaving rough rocks

exposed, with the typical stone masonry of Corse on top. This iscombined with curved wooden walls with timber lattice and glass toblend in with the overall strategy of Chappili.
