P & C message The community of Mascot Public School comes together and is strongest when the contribution of teachers and parents and the student body alike commit to the well-being and general welfare for the education of our children. I attended Mascot Public School from the age of five years as then did my sister and brother. My wife and I now send our children to Mascot PS confident that our children will receive every opportunity to meet their full potential in whatever endeavor suits their abilities. As president of the Parents and Citizens Association of this school, I would invite you to engage with the school to the extent that you are able and to become involved with your child’s welfare so as to enable her or him to receive a good education which will be the foundation for ongoing success in life. Your decision to send your child to Mascot PS is a good one and I am confident that you will come to enjoy the facilities and community spirit that it provides. Mr Stan Kondilios P&C President 2012

Arts

Portrait Art Initiative Each class chose an artist and or style to study and did some preliminary work on the artist the style/history/country of origin/time frame using paints/crayons/pencils on paper. Students then painted their own portrait on canvas with acrylic paints using the style (and style of the artist) that they studied. On Tuesday 3 April we held an art show to showcase the student’s work. Parents had the opportunity to purchase their child’s art for a small fee of $5. All art was on display at our Art Show . Selected students were asked to paint the portraits of various Mascot community members. Our school thanks Mr. Espresso, in Mascot for their generous sponsorship of this learning opportunity. It gave the students a unique opportunity to explore artists, techniques and ideas and then to use those concepts in creating their own artwork.

Our recorder group waiting to perform at the festival of instrumental music Drama/Music/Art – End of year Concert In term 3 teachers were asked to focus on a concert item that can showcase their student’s talents and areas of study. Performances included showcasing the creative arts programs that students were involved in throughout the year such as dance, drama, music, singing, band and recorder. The concert proved a huge success for the school and will become an annual event.

At school we once again enjoyed the Tri Skills gymnastic program, Backyard League, basketball, softball, netball and hockey and continued with the Dance To Be Fit program which was well received by students and parents. We continued with fundamental movement skills, the junior swimming program, the Premier’s Sporting Challenge and Crunch and Sip. In our house competition Flinders won the swimming Hargraves the cross country and Hargraves the athletics so Hargraves are the 2012 champion house. We would like to thank our teachers and coaches who gave up their time to train us, the parents and friends who came to support us and our captains and vice captains for their efforts. We look forward to another great year in 2013.

Preschool

Mascot Preschool has experienced great change this year. Working in partnership with our community we have written a Preschool Philosophy. Upon entering the foyer of our Preschool you will now see all relevant documentation required under the National Regulations which is in line with the NQF (National Quality Framework) and the implementation of EYLF (Early Years Learning Framework) Our teachers have successfully created a learning environment following the EYLF which centers around a child’s own interests. Within the next year all DEC Preschools will be assessed through an accreditation process. To prepare for this our staff has been working on a QIP (Quality Improvement Plan) which highlights our strengths and targets areas for improvement. Through daily reflections new goals are set to enable targets to be met.

Academic

In the National Assessment Program, the results across the Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 literacy and numeracy assessments are reported on a scale from Band 1 to Band 10.

The achievement scale represents increasing levels of skills and understandings demonstrated in these assessments.

Yr 3: from Band 1 (lowest) to Band 6 (highest for Year 3)

Yr 5: from Band 3 (lowest) to Band 8 (highest for Year 5)

The Year 3 results are particularly pleasing with the highest achievement reached since NAPLAN tests commenced in 2008. We exceeded the state and national averages in achievement in literacy and numeracy. The Year 5 results showed sound progress in achievement since these students sat the Naplan tests in Year 3. There was a significant reduction of students in the bottom bands of achievement; however the attainments reached in the upper bands were not as high as those achieved in Year 3.

Reading – NAPLAN Year 3

• 75% of our students achieved results in the

top 3 bands in Literacy (reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. Compared with 54% in 2011, and compared with the state average in 2012 of 70.8%.

• Only 6.8% achieved results in the bottom two bands, compared with 24.6% in 2011 and

• Only 4.6% achieved results in the bottom 2 bands compared with 18.9% in 2011 and compared with the state average in 2012 of 14.6%

Reading – NAPLAN Year 5

• There was a 20% improvement in the growth of students achievement from Years 3 to 5. 46.7% of students achieved results in the top 3 bands, compared with 55% for the state.

• This shows that we do need to continue to focus on quality teaching of literacy in the upper primary years. 20% achieved results in the bottom 2 bands compared with 28.6% in 2011 and compared with the state average in 2012 of 20.5%

Significant programs and initiatives

Public Speaking Quality programs to assist and promote students in public speaking are in place throughout K-6. Students are explicitly taught the essential skills that are required for public speaking. Reflective feedback to students is valued to further enhance their skills. Various opportunities for growth are supported through programs in K-6 such as structured weekly topics across grades, class presentations, The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, and Sydney East Public Speaking Competition. Apart from learning how to prepare and present a speech, students in primary grades were also introduced to impromptu speeches. This encouraged the students to demonstrate their skills and understandings with little preparation time. Debating As an extension from the public speaking programs in our school, selected Year 6 students participated in the Sydney Region Primary Schools Debating Competition. In 2012 our school was represented by two teams who demonstrated their skills of persuasion and disagreement. They attained great achievements through to the Interzone Finals.

Aboriginal education

In 2012 our school had 18 Aboriginal students. We are fortunate to have the assistance, experience and knowledge of Mr. Bruce Shillingsworth, an Aboriginal man from Brewarrina. Personalised Learning Plans for each student were developed, focusing on the child’s needs. Students were also given opportunities to participate in programs outside school, such as

Yarn-Up a public speaking program for Stage 3 students and the Patrick White NSW Young Indigenous Writers’ Competition. As a whole school we acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land – Bidjigal people, and incorporate knowledge and understandings of the Aboriginal people in class programs. This year our NAIDOC week focus was ‘Dare to Challenge’. Each class in K-6 studied an Aboriginal Identity who has made a positive contribution to society and has become a well-known identity. The Deadly Kids Doing Well Awards were held again this year by Sydney region. It’s an event that celebrates the achievements of Aboriginal students across the region who are doing well in academic achievement, attendance and leadership. This year’s recipient was Mouhtadi Sjarief, in Year 6.

Multicultural education

In our multi-cultural school we celebrate all important festivals through programs that develop in all students the knowledge attitudes and skills required for a culturally diverse society. Our harmony day celebrations brought our multi-cultural community together.

Student Teachers:

This year at Mascot we have been fortunate to host student teachers from several universities including overseas trained teachers who must complete a short practicum to enable them to teach in Australia. The standard of our student teachers has been very high and we have seen them return to our school as a casual teacher when they have completed their degree or masters. We hope to continue our successful partnership with these universities next year.

School evaluation of Spelling NSW public schools conduct evaluation to support the effective implementation of the school plan. In 2012 our school carried out evaluation of Spelling, including phonemic awareness.

Background

A concern that spelling results across the school were not up to benchmark standards for all students in all grades.

Findings and conclusions

NAPLAN results in spelling showed that the achievement of students in Years 3 and 5 over the past 3 years were inconsistent in results in spelling.

Diagnostic testing results showed that up to 20% of students were not reaching benchmarks for their grades.

Nearly 30% of students in Kindergarten did not achieve satisfactory results in the SPAT (Sutherland Phonemic Awareness Test) at the end of Kindergarten.

Lack of Phonemic awareness in Year 1 attributed to poor reading and spelling results in up to 20% of students.

Our whole school spelling program needed revision.

Future directions

• Phonemic awareness program developed and implemented for Year 1 students and supported by our LAST (learning assistance support teacher).

Page 14: 2499 12 - Home - Mascot Public School M… · 1 Mascot Public School Song . Mascot school we’re proud to be here, striving to achieve. Standing side by side with one another, until

13

• Whole school spelling program reviewed and resourced - so that students can become effective spellers. The Four Knowledge Sources were implemented.

1. PHONOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of the sounds in words and how they are represented.

2. VISUAL KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of the ways words look.

3. MORPHEMIC KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of the meaning of words and word building.

4. ETYMOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of the origin and meaning of words.

• Teachers trained and supported in new program

• Continue with the Premiers Spelling Bee Parent, student and teacher satisfaction In 2012 the school sought the opinions of parents, students and teachers about the school.

Background

In 2011 the school community was surveyed about teaching in the school. One of the future directions noted was that students needed to be more involved in the learning process. The students needed to be clear about the intended outcomes and the purpose of learning.

In 2012 we surveyed teachers and students about Quality teaching. Teachers were asked 47 questions and students in Years 5 and 6 were asked 57 questions. Teachers and students were asked to rank their responses as always, mostly, occasionally, rarely and never.

The full and complete response to the survey can be found on our school’s web page.

Student responses

Student responses (87 students) showed over 75% of all response to the questions were ranked as always and mostly. A further 22% said occasionally. Less than 3% said rarely or never.

Intellectual quality and significance.

Purpose: - to identify how lessons can best match a students learning style.

The intellectual quality dimension builds from a recognition that high quality student outcomes result if learning is focused on intellectual work

that is challenging, centred on significant concepts and ideas, and requires substantial cognitive and academic engagement with deep knowledge. A selection of responses was:- • I enjoy the work I do at school. • In class I have some choice about the

activities that I do. • My teachers explain what we are going to

learn. • My teachers expect high standards of work

from me. • Other students in my class want to learn. • My teachers take a personal interest in each

student.

Harmony day

Quality Learning Environment

Purpose: - to help improve teaching and learning in the classroom.

Learning is improved when the classroom or other learning environments provide high levels of support for learning. This dimension of pedagogy draws attention to the specific need to support learning, as well as the need to support students in classrooms.

A selection of responses was:- • My teachers use things I already know to help

me learn new ideas. • I get to think deeply about the important

ideas being taught. • I can explain what I’ve learnt in my own

words. • My teachers present ideas I am unfamiliar

with, in ways that are understandable to me.

Page 15: 2499 12 - Home - Mascot Public School M… · 1 Mascot Public School Song . Mascot school we’re proud to be here, striving to achieve. Standing side by side with one another, until

14

• My teachers illustrate ideas with stories from real life.

• In class we are encouraged to come up with our own ideas.

• If I can’t work out something one way, I can try other ways of working it out.

• My teachers show me how ideas in one of my subjects are related to ideas in other subjects.

• I learn about how people from different backgrounds might view things.
