Welcome to the 2010 iteration of the 24/7 DIY Video Festival!

Tonight’s show builds from the first 24/7 DIY show in 2008, when several hundred DIY video creators, curators, digital culture scholars, and Internet industry leaders gathered at the University of Southern California for a summit on the future of video creation and communication. It was the first event of its kind, at a pivotal moment in the evolution of media, convening the wide-ranging communities that were just starting to come together around grassroots, everyday and amateur video creation. The event returns tonight with an all new show of the latest in amateur online video featuring an extensive line-up of funny, passionate, political and creative DIY videos culled from diverse genres and highlighting recent trends and techniques emerging from the DIY scene.

This year’s show explores a more mature field, focusing in particular on a key theme, “collective action,” as videomakers reach out to others, creating active communities in dialogue. The show includes examples from the most prominent forms of amateur video production, including lip dubs, in which students craft single-shot music video portraits of their schools; brilliant auto-tune spoofs that transform quotidian and ridiculous moments captured on tape into sublime musical events; video remixes that are by turns overtly political and hilarious; videoblogs documenting everyday life and collective action around the world; and fan vids, in which fans reimagine their icons through editing, sound design and remix. Curated collectively with input from Matteo Bittanti, Francesca Coppa, Sasha Costanza-Chock, Ryanne Hodson, Jonathan McIntosh, Tim Park and Mike Wesch, who each made selections from different DIY genres, the final program includes dozens of examples in a fast-paced overview.

The evening also features a lecture by Henry Jenkins, Professor of Communication, Journalism and Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. Jenkins has written and lectured extensively on media and popular culture, as well as on user-generated content and participatory culture. The author of Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide and Fans, Bloggers and Gamers: Exploring Participatory Culture, Jenkins brings an insightful perspective to the program. The DIY Video event concludes with a party in the Hammer Museum courtyard featuring a live performance by the critically acclaimed audio/video mashup artist Mike Relm, a San Francisco-based artist known for his dynamic and politically charged performances.

All Together NowA recurring theme in this year’s program is collective action as amateur videomakers around the world connect with each other around politics, environmentalism and everyday life. Included in this section are several clips from the 2009 National Vlog Posting Month (NaVloPoMo) in which 30 vloggers posted 30 videos across 30 days, each loosely connected to the others to provide a snapshot of everyday life. Also included are instances of distributed political actions united through video documentation.
